Woohoo!, my first sketchbook. As if It couldn't get bad enough, i now have a place to collectively put all my bad drawings! I've been lurking around here for about half a year and rarely post, so i'm sure none of you know me. My name is Mitchell. I just turned 18 at the end of last year. I have a VERY long long (long) road ahead of me. I'll do my best to post daily.

hmm. still no comments haha. The links are working right? Didn't get too much sketching done today because of work but here is my try at the Linda Bergkvist tutorial. This was the first thing I did when I got my tablet about 3 months ago.

You are doing excellent work at a young age, so I imagine experience will be your best friend as you work daily on your craft. Composition, attention to detail and selection/blending of colors are your strengths. Your work provides a warm and lasting impression, and I enjoy viewing it. Thank you for sharing.

Doubleplay54 - That's one of the nicest comments I have ever received about my work. Lots of times I get discouraged, but comments like that make me push even more. Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Alright, here is my update for today:

a little update on the girl. I was too damn tired to do anymore last night. About 50% done. I just blocked in the basic shapes. I'm dieing for comments/critiques/put-downs! anything!

You have the advantage of age; it's certainly no disadvantage. ;) Love the first two digitals, very nice color choices and lighting. I love your pencils completely, especially the skull study.

Those environments are great, man! And you seem to have a really good handle on using the tablet. Keep working on your faces. Your studies are real nice.

I'm racking my brain trying to find something constructive to say about the girl. I know from experience that saying, "Wow, man, that's great, keep it up," doesn't really help, true though it may be. So I will say this: in all painting, the rule is working general to specific. It would be nice to see the whole figure worked out before you start detailin'.

Your proportions are sound and your rendering is awesome, so keep it up.

What can i say, i am inlove. THIS is SOME great piece of art dude. The expression of this girl is awesome. Maybe u should try to finish the face (some more touches here and there), and not to conentrate too much on the body. Anyway, i think it's love at first sight. AWESOME dude. REALLY. I can't wait to see it finished. Please finish it so i can dream at her all day long :P

Apocalypse_Rex: Thanks a lot bud!

LoTekK: Thanks! Yeah the skulls are a personal favorite.

HankTol: Thanks mate! Yeah i have a problem of wanting to add detail right away. Thanks for the advice.

T-Raktor: Haha thanks. I'm glad you're in love. I'm not sure if you know, but this is a ref painting. I kind of got the hint that you might think I did it from scratch. I can't remember her name, but i'll find out and let you know. I'm sure you will like this next update...

I have now completed her dress, left leg, did a couple subtle touches to the face and made her a bit taller, and blocked in the rest of the figure. I wrote that little note by her arm just to let you guys know that that arm is still in progress (i'm sure you could tell anyway). I'll finish everything tommorrow, plus some more pencil work to scan in.

P.S. this is a ref image. I'm sorry if I failed to mention that.

Sweet skintones, man; she looks tasty. :D The right side of her face (her right) is looking a little odd, though. Almost cut off. It's lovely otherwise, though. And great job with the feet and sandals, as well as the dress. You've managed to get that stretchy sorta silk look. Looking forward to seeing this updated.

March 20th, 2006, 12:09 PM
hey! it's nice to see you starting a life drawing class. On the painting of the girl, you might want to think more about the background than just a flat white. If you just paint in a midtone of a neutral cool color it will really make the skin tone pop out.... there are a lot of different moods you can push simply by changing the background and it's relationship to the figure. Don't be afraid to deviate a lot from the reference, especially when it comes to color. Also, not all of your edges need to be hard edges, and if some of them are more blurry and more suggestive many times the painting/drawing will be much more active and interesting to look at. keep working!

Thanks for stopping and commenting in my SB - I really like what you have going on here, expecially for your age! Unfortunately I don't really have any crits for you, it looks like you are already doing the right things....

if anything, you might want to start learning perspective. I am sure it won't be long before you want to put poeple, vehilces, and enviroments together in compostions and angles that you can't find ref. for!

Since you left a comment on my darling sketchbook, I decided to drop by and do the same.

You are off to a very good start, especially being 18.
Here is a quick tip. Remember to use core shadows, highlights and reflective lights on your life drawings. They will give your art more dimension. I know you have it in some drawings but try and use it on your studies.

yikes, COLOR! :) nice to see you take your sketches to the next level and i really like the expression.
there are only 3 tiny things that bug me a little (but don't forget i'm a newbie): first the white underneath the iris. when i observed it right, there isn't that much white (especially with such a young person) in this head position. because when there's white it always suggests a head-tilt that isn't there in your sketch. but that's just a small detail. the other tiny thing is the shading over the left eye. the highlight should be a little to the left because it hits the bone of the eyesocket... and third is the position of the ear. it's a little low, isn't it? of course that's very individual, but normally it's roughly between the eyebrows and the nose...

hope i'm not totally wrong with these remarks... :)
great work!

Mitchell

Uziel: Thanks for the links, they're really helpful.

Recursive_End: THanks a lot! I do cross hatching, I guess it's just not apparent, yeah i'm not too happy with my shading, i'll definately apply it in the future.

stine: Thanks for the comments and suggestions. When I work on color for awhile I get so caught up in the actual colors that I forgot basic anatomy! You have a very good eye and thank you for pointing them out. I fixed everything you said in this update, though you might not see a huge difference.

stine
April 13th, 2006, 04:10 PM

Hey man! You've made a great start here! Keep at the anatomy studies, they'll really help later... I liked that you're not only trying out different media, but that you're also switching from reference to life to imagination drawings... This also will really help you in the end. Just try to keep in mind the stuff you learn while doing the other two when working on the third. Did that sentence make any sense?

The main issue I see is consistency. It's an issue we all face, and it is as sketch book fro goodness sakes, but try to be consistent. Here's an example... you did some arm/hand studies waaay back in your first post. They were (and still are) just beautiful drawings, but you really haven't reached that place with your pencils since...

Anyway... Keep up the good work. You have a lot of potential, and are in a good position to avoid a lot of bad habits. Keep up with the studies man!
Cordially yours,
KC

Hi Skeiff! I am really glad that you have decided to join our SSG! Most of your works are very good! You are draw and paint much better than I do, but I will try to leave you some critiques.

I like your last painting, the colors are cool. But I think that the hair is quite flat it is just a layer of black paint, try to paint some higlights on it. I think you have not spent enough time on the hair. A rule that I have read in a book says that you should spend as many time on the hair as on all other parts of the face.

Hey Skeiff, welcome to SSG 20 its good to have another member!! you render well and your digital paintings are really cool keep it up. On the last painting you did the hair looks a bit stiff its not thats its rendered realistically it needs more of a rounded shape so it the hair looks like it falls naturally around the head. :yayca:

Nii: damn, Your sister is good. it is a maori tribesman! haha. I guess i need to work better on my portraits and stop making people look like tribesmen. hah. Thanks for stopping by.

stine: Thanks a lot! Yeah the lip is probably the biggest thing that was bugging me as well. Like I said, the teacher made us stop exactly at 15 mins so there were lots of things I couldn't refine! that's the worst feeling haha.

Things will change soon though, and I'll be filling up pages like a mad man. Here is another head study we did in class. I had to demonstrate how I approach my drawings in class because the teacher liked how I was doing it. Here is the unfinished peice, will be completed thursday. Lots of things I still want to push. Looking good <> make sure you have the structure where you what it before you start to render <> if the structure is solid you really don't need a great deal of rendering.

Shading does not make the picture <> as I have said: shadow is not something to depict it is something to depict with <> use light and dark to depict form.

Up you go

Here is the (almost) finished version of the head study, I worked on it for about another 45mins. I might not work on it again, we are moving on to different things in class. I tried my best to fix the concaved cheek. It actually looks a lot different than the WIP i posted. I like it, but I think I can do a lot better. I have the worst teacher.. I learned way more from your guy's critiques than what my teacher told me. Thanks mentler for the advice... i'm not sure if I accomplished what you said, but I sure kept it in mind while trying to do this:

1hr 45mins on a rather large paper:

Well you can only do so much to a drawing before you start stuffin it up. Good to know when to stop, so your left with mostly what was good about a peice than working on it till youve covered all the good bits up. New stuff soon looking foreward to it. Laters.

Nice, very nice i'm not a huge fan of the all out rendering but, This is very cool! I can tell you learned alot from this drawing. Good highlights nice suddle tones its good skeiff keep it up man great job. Although i'm not a fan of the longer detailed studies doesn't mean we shouldn't do them from time to time. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.

stine
April 28th, 2006, 06:58 AM
very cool ongoing process here. still that highlight left to her nose is bugging me. if that wasn't there the whole drawing would be even cooler. over all great piece, i especially like how you did the hair!

Farvus
April 28th, 2006, 08:09 PM
The last one has cool rendering. I think the highlights are a bit too strong but I might be wrong. Keep it up.

rodrigo!
April 28th, 2006, 08:28 PM
be careful not to overdo the rendering, it looks a bit too jagged atm, i think, like it feels more as if its a metal statue than a face with skin. i think you should soften it up a bit more and be a bit more subtle with the highlights and blending
mentler has some great advice too :)
keep it up and hope this helps for your next portrait.

Ivan.R
April 30th, 2006, 06:02 PM
The last version of the portrait looks much better than the previous one! I agree with rodrigo! that it look too shinny and metallic. The paper color which is blue strengthens the metallic effect.

Nii: yeah I guess I knida stuffed it up a bit...

ashrumm: Thanks a lot! Yeah I like quicker studies as well, but it was for a grade so..oh well.

stine THanks a lot. Yeah that highlight is a bit bright..

Farvus: THanks for checking out my SB!

rodrigo!: Thanks for the tips, it looks real shiny because I used my camera phone to take a picture, and for some reason it makes everything look shiny. In real life it doesnt look that shiny at all. I guess the phone just makes the glare come out more. As well as the rendering.. I wish I had a real digital camera, because this picture does not do the peice justice at all.

Ivan.R Yeah it does look a lot better than the WIP haha. read the reply to rodrigo's comment for the explanation on why it's so damn shiny.

I've been super busy with finals and all, I haven't had time to update, but I have been drawing. I wish I had more time to draw, but that will all change after the damn finals.

I have been studying bridgman, and I have learned so much. I plan to draw almost every illustration in the book just so I can finally start tackling anatomy.

We will start off with some life drawings from today's class:

Latu
May 3rd, 2006, 12:46 AM
Sup Skeiff. I did'nt mean to suggest you stuffed that profile up, just to mention to know when to stop when somethings gone wrong so you can move on. It's still a good drawing.I'm guilty of overwoking stuff in an attempt to cover up mistakes and bad value transitions, so they end up with the relatively same tone all across the form, so I need to take my own advice at times.

Great update that 3rd one is'nt too bad bro, I like how the outline suggests the form without the rendering, it has some appeal to it. your coming along on the rendering side of things, need work on foreshortening though. Adding weight to a curve will help I think. Study pen and ink works by some of the old masters or ink work in comic book art, you'll get a good idea of where to make a curve thick then taper to a sharp point when foreshortening cillindricle shapes on figures. You're doing well and progressing. Go hard on the finals. Nii out.

stine
May 3rd, 2006, 08:04 AM
hey! life drawings looking nice (especially like that foot on the second one). bridgman looks great, too. i always find it hard not to adept too much of his drawing style but you're doing a good job at keeping your own. you should definetely keep up the life drawings and working from reference from time to time to check what you've learnt from bridgman. good luck for the finals! :)

Great update Skieff I can see you've been busy. One thing i've noticed is your shading you've improved lots. And your proportions are improving as well. The only thing i can say to you at this point is keep doing anatomy studies along with your figure work it will help a ton. Other than that you're looking good keep it up.:tihi:

Hey Skeiff thanks for the awesome post on my sketchbook you couldn't be more correct with my crappy rendering its a bit sloppy and rushed. I guess i really never put much thought into the shading process i put all my emphasis on structure. I appreciate the links to the artists you sent me great rendering. Thanks for sharing man I really appreciate the constructive crits thats the only way we will get better. Thanks alot man!!! And don't forget to do an ear!!:tihi:

Great flow of improvement! im in love with the girl in

keep the expression on her face, and the skintone was just
faboulus (especialy like how u did her left leg, from

All that time u dedicate to

great to see the progress!

Thanks so much for the comments everyone. I really appreciate it!

Time to update, I have not updated in FOREVER, sorry about that. Finals and school and work have been so hectic. I have been drawing A LOT though. I'm still trying to get my pencil skills up. I'm glad that I am seeing improvements within just a few months. I have a lot more pages than this, but I didn't want to scan it all:

Welcome back Skeiff i guess i wasn't the only one missing in action for a little while. Your rendering is tight!!!!! and i mean that both literally and in the slang kind of way. You have made huge inroads on your pencil rendering wow and you have also helped me improve although i have a ways to go. On my next drawing i'll take my time on rendering to see where i am. but good job here man good job. I cannot wait for another update and i now that its summer Get to work!! lol.

saw your avatar and liked the drawing so i dropped by your sketchbook, stuff looks good, I been doing studys outa that same bridgeman book myself as well.
even tho your main concentrations are on anatomy and light and form at the moment Id focus on composition as well. Cuz eventually the point of all this study is to apply it to the final product a finished picture. so try to treat every page as a composition. its a little difficult but it makes the pages that much more interesting to look at and you start teaching yourself about composition

cheers

Nii: Thanks a lot buddy! Appreciate it. And finals went pretty good actually. (that's a first!)

Ashrumm: Thanks bud! You yourself are getting pretty fine with that pencil!

Stine: Thanks stine, much appreciated.

Ivan.R: THanks for the comments. Yeah I kinda messed up the jaw. but eh oh well, moving on to different things! haha.

KenDeathwalker: Yes that is very true, I REALLY need to work on composition. All my works have mainly just been drawing and focusing on how well I can draw it. Now I think it's at a point where I need to take composition into play. Thanks for the comments and the advice. Much appreciated.

Ledd: Thanks a lot! Glad to know you like them. Cheers.

Hey Skeiff welcome back buddy this update is large enough as long as you are updating. I really like your rendering wow. But one thing to keep in mind is if you are going to work on the whole head lay it out first before you get caught up rendering. But i think you know that and you are not planning on laying out the entire head like your avatar. Good stuff man your pencil work is really taking off.:)

stine
May 30th, 2006, 01:41 AM
hey skeiff! cool update! i really like the way you caught the light in the wip's left side eye. the only thing that bugs me a little is that the right eye is in the shadows and has the same values (or in case of the eyeball even lighter)as the one totally lit. don't know your reference and maybe you copied that correctly, but it looks a little strange to me. other than that again great rendering!

the public drawings are really nice. are you going to pubs and cafes to do them? see you around, til next time,

After all my SSG guys have been doing studies of master painters, I decided to do one myself. I chose my favorite american master, John Singer Sargent and this is his painting of Emily Sargent.

I'm not NEARLY done yet, and I know there are a lot of mistakes because basically I've just blocked in and haven't refined anything yet, The only thing I have started refining is the front of the face. There are still a lot of things I want to change about the face as well. Just wanted to show you guys what I was up to last night at 5 in the morning!

Here is the final piece of my sargent study. I was going to add more detail to the clothes but I decided not to. I kind of liked it the way it is, and I wanted to keep a painterly feel. No color picking, I don't do like doing that..

great digi, skeiff! i think it was the right decision to leave the clothes the way they are now. draws a lot more attention to the facial feautures. really well done, especially because of the very difficult light in the painting. would love to see some more (but you should definetely get some sleep, man!) :)

Mr.Blonde: It was nice meeting you as well. You have some solid stuff! See you at another workshop!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok here is one small page I started on my last day in montreal and finished when I got home. I Have SO much pencil work to scan in, and I really feel I have improved so much since my last pencil posts...and especially over the 4 days at the workshop (I look at my old pencil stuff and cringe haha). THe workshop was such a positive thing for me, I don't feel afraid anymore of the "blank page". I looked at the quality of stuff I posted when I first began this sketchbook compared to my stuff now and I feel like I have come a LONG ways in just 4 months. I feel really good about my progression so far and it will only get better from here..

I'll be scanning my other pages in later, but as of now I only have this one page I scanned in yesterday:

Sorry for the wesburt "blur" thingy, but I have never tried it before and I just had to haha. All from my imagination:

Nice loose lines in those life drawings, cast drawing is great, that digi of your muse (she's purdy) is fantastic can't spot much wrong with it the skin tones look good. You have some slight proportional issues with your heads. Really superb drawings. There's a nice textured feel to your digi's, in the latest one and COW. Work from ref is very solid, keep studying. Perhaps try using a bigger brush to build up values on those greyscale speeds... and by big I mean huge :).

Also, please keep feeding me those awesome drawings.

sorry for a small update but here are some more sketchbook pages. I finally got myself a moleskin! I've been wanting one for awhile. I've been experimenting with color pencils as well! Here are the first two pages in my moleskin and some portraits in my other sketchbook. enjoy.

Here is a small update, I managed to take a very crappy camera phone picture of some of the life drawing we did today in class. Sorry for the quality.

THIS WAS DONE WITH MY LEFT HAND. (I'm a righty) I didn't manage to get any pics with my main drawing hand (right). 1 min each:

I know that you probably prefer advice over compliments. I am not in any position to be giving you advice, but it seems wrong not to say anything after enjoying such a cool sketchbook.
So here you go.

Very nice sketchbook, the anatomy studies are impressive. Your interpritation of bridgeman is quite interesting. I think I like your version better, more coherent I think.

That last digital was excellent. The rendering is beyond my comprehention, as I am just beginning to investigate digital painting. My experience lies mostly in pencil, you appear to havevery a good grasp on that medium.

Seeing art like this coming from someone so close to me in age makes me worried. I have so much work to do, to even be able to compete with people like you that... well...

To much talking I'm off to draw. You provoked me to it, so I hope that you can deal with the consiquences of your art.

Skeiff man, let me just say that the Hale study is nice as rice! How long did that take to complete? I'm digging the studies you're busting out too, especially the page with eyes. And that SP is dead on, great work. It's interesting to see people's work when they do it with their opposite hand; I tried that a few months ago and it almost seemed as if my 'regular' hand improved as well, keep that going! But keep it up here man, improvement is evident!

Great Job! Phil Hale is by far my favorite artists, and I love this piece, I can't believe how good you got it! Which brushes did you use to get that effect? Whenever I look at his stuff I think it can only be done in oils traditionally. It still looks a little smooth, but its still spot on!

September 22nd, 2006, 01:01 AM
hey dude! you have some really nice stuff goin on, i love the pencil studies.. I don't know if you knew this or not, but it's kinda ironic that you did a phil hale study in digital, because to my knowledge he looks down upon digital and says it makes bastard artists or something.. don't quote me, but that's the general idea i got. anyway, it is still a pretty nice study.. phil's work contains a huge wealth of knowledge, good to see you have the balls to do a study. keep on truckin

WOW! I haven't had this many replies ever haha. Thanks for the stars guys!

Magic Man: Thanks! It means a lot coming from someone who's SB I admire.

Tigermilk: Thanks bud! Nah I'm just a 3 star noob haha.

stine: Thanks!

Asoir: Thanks a lot sir!

Q-Caddlewick: Thanks for the compliments. Don't even worry about me, I barely started this journey in March of this year, I drew a bit when I was little but it was nothing major. I've basically come this far just in about 7-8 months, and I was horrible to begin with. Practice is the key! Just draw on a daily basis as much as you can.

Zord: mmm rice. Yeah drawing with the left is nice, it really does improve your right hand! I have to do that more often... THanks!

frostsnake: Thanks!

kuroart: Thanks!

Bojee: Haha yeah i got carried away.

sith: Hey thanks! 5 stars for a noob like me?

Ganbat-Bad: Thanks for dropping by! I admire your SB so much.

TheGnoll: THanks for the tip! I do have problems with that... that's what happens when you are drawing at 5 a.m. haha.

Darktwin: Thanks yeah Hale has some of the most beautiful work i've even seen. I worked on it for about 2 hours a day for 4 days. So around 8-9 hours.

ashrumm: Thanks! thanks for the info on the peice. Yeah you should do one, his work is beautiful! I know you can pull it off.

ThinMint: Thanks mate. I used just a regular round hard brush. Sometimes I'd use a soft edged brush on pressure sensitivity to get some values correct. But mainly just one brush.

Thanks for the stars once again guys, it means a lot. And thank you for the kind words. It keeps me going.

SKEIFF! What's up, man?? Brother you're making some serious progress based on the stuff I saw of yours from the workshop. This is seriously headed in some really wicked directions, man. Nice Pencil renders and realistic refs to boot. The life drawing is really picking up as well. I like how you're understanding light and form. I only hope your discoveries that you're making via life drawing/ref drawing will come across even more in your imaginative stuff. Just keep studying muscles, bones, etc. and it'll continue to help. The better you understand how things work the more you'll be able to just pull shit out of your ass when designing from your head. And yea, keep building that library... really lovely book, man. I'll be watching!

Nice skeiff, I agree, you did enough on this one, draftsmenship is solid. Post before this one is nice also, nice figure drawings. My favorite one is the first one, face and hands are great. The last one the foot looks a little off. Keep it coming man.

Your drawing skills have just bounded along. That sp is really something (although the ear looks a bit flat), the values are gorgeous. Keep it coming!

great work in here bro. im not sure if i said it in here before but you've got some serious pencil rendering skills. keep em coming.

finish that portrait! try working more general to specific. get everything in there and then work back into it. this will make your drawings go quicker and sweeter.

great work bro
