Try out BioBlocs. Imagine that mixed with other LifeForm programs in a massive multi-lifeform online environment... maybe mix in some Noctis... *orgasm*

Very interesting talk on content creation and the Quantity vs. Quality aspect, and how something is worth more if it's player made (even if it looks like poop).

This game looks really promising. But I cant help feeling they're aiming a bit high in how big and open ended it is. Though in the video seems like it could work, so I'm hoping it does.

the only thing that is boring is that the game is based on primate evolution. meaning weapons and war. whould be cool to see another approach to evolving then doing warfare and tools. bah sounds like a hippy, must be the weather hehe.
but yea if i get this game it will keep me distracted from life for a long while it seems. hehe.
time to go and explore the space on the computor screen again it seems.
seems like fun to build a race and designing it yourself and then see it come to life. its a concept artist dream no?

I cant wait for this game, I love the vastness of it, and that it seems like it will keep interest even with its lofty goals. Its awsome that objects u buy will be stremed into the game by other users as you play and create. Can't wait, this will be one of those games I follow obsesivly until the day it's released.

You don't play online, but you download worlds created by other users to your system so every individual has a little universe of his own but its populated by objects and lifeforms created by users all over.
I dig the idea, I think its way cool, but I'm not really holding my breathe. I've seen more than my fair share of games that look really awesome on the demo, but disappoints when it reached the end user. Of course I am hoping it won't happen, but I'll reserve my comments until when I can see it.

Not true its an online game, where you seek out other peoples galaxies / worlds and try to take them over

No, Dormantwalker, Darth Massacre is right. Will Wright stated multiple times in the presentation it's asynchronous. The game downloads creatures made by other players, but you play by yourself.
Mort, he mentioned that war isn't the only way to go about the game, so it will likely be possible to evolve as a peaceful race.

I wonder if you choose to upload your creations or if it's done automatically. If it's done automatically there might be copyright issues because the editor seems to allow much creativity. I'm not sure if a blurb in the EULA can override that. It would be like having opencanvas (which saves the brushstrokes, not a bitmap) automatically share all your paintings/designs on some server etc, free for anyone to alter. I suppose there's some sort of arbitrary limit where the editor is open enough to allow copyrighted material to be done.
I'm wondering about this because this seems like a good tool for creature design.

March 14th, 2006, 11:46 PM
Prom I'm sure there's some terms you'd have to agree with to play the game which would allow them to do it legally. It does seem pretty neat though. Anyone know exactly when it's going to come out?
darth massacre
March 15th, 2006, 12:15 PM
I don't believe the copyright issues are a problem. Xpose mentioned that one part of the agreement in the EULA would be that you understand and agree that your content could be uploaded for use by everyone else. And in fact, you don't have to create a lot. If 100 users create one home planet each, every user would have 99 other worlds and star systems to explore when it comes to the intergalactic phase (not inclusive of terraformed planets).
The other thing would be to look at the mod community. Mods have been around for years. Developers encourage it and they don't get a payday unless the developers/publishers pick it up and put it out as an official expansion or something. If the developers of Spore decides to repackage and sell the fan created content, then its a sore point for all users. But I believe Spore becomes an "open source content distributor" at the intergalactic phase of the game. If made known, the users will have to agree before even be allowed to install the program.
But most people tend to skip the EULA.....so....

Is this a PC game? Is it supposed to come out for the 360 or PS3? Its ptobably the coolest concept for a game I've ever seen. Also, when is it supposed to be realeased?

I'm pretty sure it's a PC game, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the 360 or PS3. EA releases pretty much everything they can across as many platforms as possible.
I don't think it has a release date yet.

Wright will be revealing more information on the game at E3, and presumably images and other handy details as well. (Platform, requirements, release date, etc.) We'll pass along whatever tidbits we can find as Spore blooms into a completed product.
So I guess the real question is; when is E3?

I wonder what the hardware specs are on this thing. I like the idea and all, but I don't want to spend three grand to play it. Did you notice the lag during load times when switching contexts from planetary to galactic and whatnot? I know it's a development version of the game and not fully tweaked yet, but I imagine he was using the best hardware available to demo it. The load times weren't terrible or anything, and they'd be more than worth tolerating for that game, but seriously, what kind of PC are people going to need to play this thing?

A new video, for those who haven't seen it yet: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1486693319327275556&q=spore
I'm watching it now. It seems that there are several galaxies, and that some galaxies can contain as many as 500 000 stars. So totally there will be several million solar systems available to visit... :x You can use worm holes as transportation over interstellar distances.
Damn, this game just seems more and more insane. I'm going to design the most ridiculous looking race of imbecile creatures and then let them colonize the entire universe.
Prometheus|ANJ
May 11th, 2006, 10:41 PM
I don't think it's possible to colonize the entire universe, because the computer only simulates the part you're currently at. Everything seem to be random seeded, maybe with changes the player has made being saved over that. Possibly the computer will update a place you visit when you go there, aproximating what has happened since you last visited. The effect of this method is that the places are isolated and unable to interact with others or you when you're not there, cuz they're frozen and not touched by the CPU.
I guess they could spend some CPU cycles on each system one at a time and eventually go through them all, but it'd have to be simple aproximations. Most likely they're only updating a few planets in the immidiate neghbourhood for diplomatic/trading stuff, not the creatures running around on the surface.

Am I the only one who thinks this does not nessessarily look fun? The whole time, all he ever talks about is the rocken technology and how many different gameplay systems there are. But he fails to convince me that any of these gameplay systems will be fun.
Little hunter gatherer games and stripped down RTSs and semi-simcity type games aren't something I want to spend time playing. I mean, maybe the little systems are somehow super fun, but they all look like the systems of other games, only more mediocre. And a bunch of little mediocre games strung together doesn't make a big awesome game. It makes a mediocre game that takes a long time to get through.
It's very easy to get sucked into the hype of high technology gaming. Everybody was sure Black and White would be fun on the bun, but who played that all the way through? Ditto Neverwinter. Ditto Fable. Some people say this is different because this is Will Wright and he's a genius, but Peter Molyneux had a great track record with Dungeon Master and Populous before he played us all for suckers. Neverwinter was made by Bioware, IMO the best game makers in the world.
I love maxis, and I played the hell out of simcity back in the day. But I think Spore has gotten so hyped because it's following the colossal success of The Sims. And the Sims wasn't a great game. It just tapped into womens love of moving furniture around. So while I think Spore will be nifty and it's programmers did a good job with that dynamic walking mechanics thing, no I don't think it will be the coolest game ever.

Yeah, well, I think the gameplay elements look a bit shallow if you watch them isolated, but seen as a whole there's great variety of things to do, and that's the game, not the individual mini games.
I'll definately have fun being creative though. I don't like playing games at all, it makes me frustrated.

Didn't WarioWare:Touched to really well too?
...but then of course there's a big heap of games that tried to be too broad and failed on everything.
How do you define a game anyways? I played with my Lego as a kid, and there were no story or anything, just me creating robots, forts and scenarios. A sandbox full of tools can make a fun place for games too.
Isn't in fact games like Doom 3 less of a game, because you can't 'play' with them, it's just a ladder you climb to get to the top. Maybe Garry's Mod is the real place to play HalfLife 2, whilst the HL2 main story/scenario is more of a linear slightly interactive experience? Maybe the amount of game and play is proportional to the amount of choices and creativity offered... and Spore seems to contain an awful lot of that.

by April 2007/early May 2007......:(
This game looks promising, but if indeed results as good as they say it will, it might be good news to players.....but it might be bad news for game concept artists. I mean if the "costumizable" game play becomes too popular among game developers.
I was a Lego loving kid, so I´ll love this game just because the editors, I really don´t mind if the game play sucks, but i think the creature and tribal stage are the most primising for me, so if i do get the game and have enought time to play it, I´ll be hanging around those 2 areas the most :).

Of cource, nothing beats "proffecional" originality.....all though maybe it would be cool to make something out of this game concept :).....kinda like the "colective story telling" thread, but based on creature design....nah, maybe is to much.
Anywas, we´ll have to wait for another year for this game. I know i can take advantage of the editors, just to increace a tad bit my creativity :).

DS and PSP would probably fall in the console category and havemore power than the average cell phone. So yes for like everything that offers an some little bit of interaction.
