Hello.

Thanks for stopping in on my sketchbook. I realize it was about a month ago, but I did appreciate it.

You've got some really awesome stuff going on here. The painting at the beginning is pretty nice. Is it finished? A work in progress? a study for another piece? If you have any more of that guy, I'd love to see it. I really enjoy the sketchy look of the painting, I just had no idea whether it was finished or not.

That robot is pretty awesome. I love the impact of the bullet and the damage it's done, and the pose is awesome. The only critique I have is that the tube going from the arm to the torso doesn't look as foreshortened as it should if the tube is coming off perpendicular to the arm piece.

Awesome stuff, I'll see you around.

The robot getting shot is really cool and graphical, the negative space around the typo makes it look like a cover or poster. Would look cool as a sharp vector graphic also.

It's great to see folk work as hard as you and see your results, I envy the time you spend on your training.

Hey whats going on Dile, I'm home visiting the parents, thats why I haven't been around. your latest drawings are looking really good. Your starting to draw the entire figure, very nice. I will have to agree with Kresh, if you don't finish that last figure, I'm going to have to help Kresh break your fingers. Seriously though, your drawings are looking much better I see you've been busy working hard. Keep up the great work man!! I'll look for you online here in the near future. yo dile nice sketchbook you go there , but naming you stuff i only hear , suck suck shit , suck shit.. you should have fun with those even if a drawing looks like shit but i can sai he i had fun with that it pleases you to continue .
the main problem i see here is you don´t finish anything although there are plenty of works you should be finished also to get away of the 3 stars joke here. i felt in love with this one , even it´s refed abit ( isn´t it ?:P )
i can only tell you to finish it with joy , keep your lines looose and have fun with it , could be a naaaice portofolio piece! i thought i´d help you out a little , so i posted some overpaints if you don´t mind . hope this can help.

hey man, good stuff, i think goblinshark pretty much said it, thats a nice sketch and it would be VERY nice if you took it further. do some hand studies, you do avoid them a lot. but most of all, don't get negative on what your doing, enjoy it and let what happens happen, your not here to impress anyone, we know you are learning, as is everyone else on this site, even the pros.

Hey man sorry I havent replied in so long. I actually havent looked through your stuff in quite a while.

Your faces have shown much improvement. One thing about them though is you seem to use the same formulae for them so they all pretty much have similarities. It would do you good to do studies from all different kinds of nationalities, and finding what makes them unique.

A tip with designing characters even just for fun, is set up a system (such as dice) to randomly pick different personalities and try to reflect that in each character. Anyway, hope that gives you something to consider.

Huge improvements matey. I would really suggest looking at some forms on there own though, it helps to improve your memory and range of shapes that you can draw. Just simple things, ears/noses/mouths/feet maybe, seeing as you seem to want to conquer the old human figure =)

I always found that everytime I did it a few weeks later I would realise I learnt something useful.

Certainly some nice stuff here, I like the little freaky black creature in the pants, made me chuckle...he's kinda evilly adorable in a sick twisted kinda way :P

Just one thing about the bat angel, the hand with the arrow looks odd...not sure if I'm looking at the back of the hand, in which case its fine if maybe a little sharpley bent at the wrist...or whether I'm looking at the front of it with the fingers, in which case the hand is too long and she's lacking a thumb or something. Also the wrist on the bow arm is too thick, like her forearm just kinda becomes a hand :)

Keep focusing on these painting experiments for a while, i think you could really gain something, it looks as though you could maybe tighten a few areas up, its good to be loose, but its also good to have some good Focused points.

the paintings are very good. sometimes the proportions of your characters are wrong or at least strange.you draw construction lines before doing the final? some drawings are very good with confident strokes, i think you just need to improve your anatomical knowledge .post 2071 have very good works(good paintings, ligths) the last post have nice colours.i want to see some more finished stuff.

Its very nice to see you're improvement, for you certainly have improved. A lot! The latest speedies are really nice, especially the first one. Its so metallic, and yet abstract. Its somewhat relaxing to look at. You have some very good studies on the previous pages as well ;)

Keep up the nice work!

Hey Dile,

Excellent work ethic and there's some marked improvement within the last few pages.

My main crits involve solutions and formulas. It's very easy to figure out how something looks and draw it, and keep that set image in your mind, but it's much harder to fully understand the form and structure of something and to flatten it out in your mind's eye. I can tell from your life stuff that you aren't yet fully understanding the way light works to bend form, the way a subtle line can weave in and out of the paper, but you're confidence with your imaginative stuff allows you to produce simple forms and figures. However, they're repetive. And repetition is easy, fast, and 'safe.' What is not safe is working out new problems, approaching new things to learn and understand even more. Basically, frustration breeds improvement. Don't lock yourself into formulae for drawings, or your art will lose vitality.

Great draftsmen don't spend their time rendering every little tiny detail, they use a few subtle marks to convey huge amounts of information. A simple line can create depth, convincing form and weight, as well as indicate motion and mood. As they say, magic is deception, and the deceiving thing about great drawings is how easy they look. You're not seeing the pile of failures behind a masterpiece, you'll only see the simpe elegance and beauty within the final image.

Seek out new things, and conquer them.

Hey pencil juice, whats been cooking? your mediums by the look of things haha, some really drastic improvement going down here, i have to say i envy your drive.. i am WAY to lazy... but hell, i'm getting there, still can't update sadly :( working on getting a laptop with wireless, but i dunno which way thats gonna go.

anyway, this is gonna sound weird but can you just give me some details of your erm... well your drive, like how many hours you draw, and what you feel while your doing it, and if you come up against an obsticle what do you do to over come it? words of wisdom if you will.. i know that sounds a little woa, but i'm printing out loads of advice and interviews to get me fueled and i honestly think it would be huge inspiration if something like that came from you lol.

or you could just throw a cream pie in my face haha.

You know, seeing the first page of this thread of yours and this last one makes me think I didn't work hard enough. You've improved so much in a pretty small amount of time. That's very inspirational to me. Gives me hope that I can become good too, haha. I've been doing studies 98% of thime, so my imaginational stuff sucks huge. That's what I'm trying to correct now. And seeing your stuff fills me with inspiration. Thanks for what you're doing man.

Oh! Oh! I found your thread! I'm the best, (been figuring to start an own thread) and you're still better. You've become Soooo much better since you started! :D.

Sorry for the swedish, but it was just gibberish, nothing you others would like to read. (hope that dennis will)

The metal texture one is really nice, I will try to learn something from it. One thing I miss in this book is any big WIP's or personal projects, you must have thousands of ideas for big images and finished pieces?

Hi there i've been passing from the first pages of your sketchbook to the lastone and obviously there is improvement...you are not wasting your time...
i feel awkard commenting on other since i'm not pro or anything but i would say your human drawings still retain some stiffness and misproportions...obviously it's far less marked in your last pages...

i have the feelling you should include more curvy lines in your first approach of the drawing...you know, defining the differents masses of the human body with loose oblong shapes...stuff like that...i hope i'm clear...it would be easier to say in french

anyway keep up the good work you're getting somewhere

Hey Dile, good to see you working hard to improve, your sb is looking good man, keep the pencil alive also, I would like to see you draw more faces from different angles, also ,keep drawing your cyborg/robots, put more detail in the masks, but then again, I like the simple design of the flat blank face. I would like to see some more variety though. I know your busy now working on the project, keep up the hard work Dile, I'll always be here to step in here and make suggestions. :) Cheers mate,

Hey there Dennis, you got some real good stuff in here. I see you have a nice feeling for dramatic lighting, and thats coming through in you digital sketches. Goblinshark gave you some good advice a few pages ago, never apologize of put your work down! You should come in here with your head held high, after all, you work like hell at it! And you can only go one way but up! Every single line you put down is a step in that direction.

Now don't let those tubes of gouache go to waste! Give us some more traditional stuff, fill your Moleskin with it, (well maybe not FILL, but a dab here and there...)

Using traditional color will only help you in the long run with digital.

Now keep it up, and lets never fight again!

Kram Tim

This last one, the robot head, now there is something going on there. Very mysterious. Put that sucker in an environment, let us know what hes up to!

Do you take any lifedrawing? If not, see if there is any way you can. you'll love it, and you get to be in a creative environment. Same with any classes actually. I used to go to a few classes at Folk universitetet, they are in the evening. may be you have a local one you can check out. I don't know where you live.

Now don't let those tubes of gouache go to waste! Smother your SB with them, well maybe a dab here ant there...

Keep it up and lets never fight again!

What I think...

Improve the knowledge, anatomy, color thoery, perspective, the works. Then apply it. I think you should consider drawing straight from life and from ref and make it stick. record what you see. draw things over if it is not right. Get crits keep drawing. You're pretty much going about things the right way, just gotta keep doing it until it clicks. Color needs some work, you're playing it safe by staying with neutrals and muted colors. Try to get some more saturated colors into your palette. Get a color wheel if you have to. Axe your barriers dude, fight fight fight your paint and get control of it. Its gonna be a struggle dude, get control of what your trying to do and start doing more narrative oriented stuff. I want to floored. Give me something that will blow my socks off. You're good enough to do it, technique is already there, its just doing that something with a good sense to not only design, composition, color, etc. but also making me laugh, creeping me the fuck out, or seeing something beautiful, anything that evokes emotion. Digital tool is very flexable and I am pretty certain you understand that dile. Show me something, step it up, I am calling you out. I dare you to make better art, how about that.

The legs are off here i think. The leg on the right should be more straight on , probably see more front of the knee cap(forshorteing?maybe). Right now it looks like the leg that is kneeling is more closer than the other leg . Just my 14 cents here.

BTW man AWESOME SKETCHBOOK 10 stars ftw!!!

Last one is definately progression, the lighting gives the impression of form and musculature.
The arms look stiff, I think redrawing them a few times might help.
Legs look weird, seriously I think it would help if you looked at yourself in a full length mirror to see the foreshortening.
Face area is bland, if you think about the silouette then it becomes even more apparent.

Your recent work has definately been a step up, I know your contact stuff will be looking excellent.
you know how much i love this one http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x127/dile1482/Speedpaint_3.jpg

Good artz since I last was here.

The last one is a tad too dark. The highlights are very dim and it would be nicer to bring out some light in the piece. I know it is a quicky, but if you draw everything this dark, it would be sad.

Hey Dile. Great new works. Really like the one that ashrumm reposted on the last page. I enjoyed watching your speedpaint but i don't really get your method. It seemed to me like you jumped into detail in one place before you had the basic idea ironed out in another. I think it would benefit you to wait a little longer before you get detailed in things: push the overall composition and look (from afar) before you detail. Oh, and thanks for your comment in my book a month ago - you didn't know it but that helped me a lot to get back on track. Keep up the good work.

hei dude ... im so sad to c just one work but ... its almoust good ... you should study the legs a little bit more they don't look that good and the hands

... those are the part that i think you should concentrate at ... do more pencil work ... try to study a mounth or two just line quality study anatomy hard proportions as well

maybe you should study a little the highlights ... hmmmm .... and one think i can't stress enough portraits as more as you can .... do those things for about 4 mounths and it all will be good ...

this is all for now hope to c more of ya work ... and hope you will have time to crit me .... i agree whit ya at the post why every one says good ... oo well this is all ....

Dile.. your video rocks, good work! Your rock'n guitar dood has a couple of problems that i can see. The proportion of his legs seem to be off, as in length of thigh to calf. I would also put a bit of arch into his back just to give more emphasis on his playing. All the guitarists I've ever played with did it...i think it's an intensity thang. Keep up the great work and posting!!

Mad Cat/Frogsweat ( nice new nickname hehe :P ) Uhm, I'm sorry to be late on this one.. I should've replied directly ( I did, but it got ereased lol... )
anyways... Sometimes inspiration comes like a kick.. sometimes it doesn't come at all.. You gotta sit down and draw any ways if you want it that bad .. Your love and passion
to it should help you get going.. Sometimes I feel sad when I don't draw ( I'm not obsessed by drawing , I just love it ) because I feel like i'm gonna end up like any other mediocre person in the future, those thoughts
have helped me from time to time to get going as well.. I don't want to be mediocre in the future! I want to be able to love what i do and put down what I love on the paper hehe : )
I'm not sure if that help you.. but anything can get you inspired..words/pictures/sounds.. but its you who must put it into action.. Theres no fuckin' idea to just sit there
and 'wait' .. Get going :) I bet you got artist you love more then others.. I have a few , like a top 5 that I always get back to and check out when I feel uninspired/not in mood to draw.

People that got me into drawing are those who inspire me the most. Sinix and Andrew ley, and lately bumskee are probably my favorites and have helped me mentaly with soooooo much.

I can have a really bad day.. browse through their stuff , and the next minute i feel fine and holding a pencil ; )

There is music that works the same way for me aswell. I have tons of music that I listen to all the time really. I can draw without music, but I don't like it as much.
I can't say that I have some sort of "best for inspiration" music.. But I listen a lot to soundtracks, and when I don't get that "shiver-feeling" off them, I just change to another! Eventually I will get it back.. Just
need a little break hehe.

Sometimes I'm drawing from life, and i see some shapes that inspire me to do something else.. Really, just open your mind and it will come to you!
I've read several of the good artist around here saying that one of the keys to get going is to not keep anything out , and let everything in. So when you
think of drawing a character in a pose, DO IT, don't say to urself that its to hard and that you can't.. When you've finished it, you'll have a new topic ..
Before I used to exclude those thoughts or ideas I had, because I thought they were to cliche/inspired by someone else.. But they help you to get going for sure.

Theres a lot of stuff that can help you to get motivated.. but you gotta be sure you wanna do it.. and just do it!
We all have bad and good days, and you gotta live through that hehe :)

I hope I answere you a little! Keep it up man!

Chrishly: Thx!

Markey2D: Thanks a lot for your words haha! You doing great too!

Razz: Your thread does the same to me! Thanks man!

[ Whine ]
Today been a really shitty day heh.. I lost my sketchbook ( some bastard stole it gah! )
I forgot my moleskine in school, and I don't have any wacom nibs left!! And my pen stopped working! great day heh.
Getting a new pen on Monday , and I got quite some deadlines coming up on me.. It better *be* here on monday
or I'll flip out.. gahh!

[ /Whine ]
However...

I'm really thankful for all the support i'm getting from everyone! I'm trying to bring the critique into my work
and I thank you for taking your time to help me!!

Jag menade att det går inte att se så bra på skolskärmarna :tihi:!
Det var inte meningen att få dig att tro att du är kass, för det är du definitivt inte!

Hey mate. Sweet update, hope you'll scan more.
Your digis are sweet, but I'd keep the colours abit less strong on some of them. The one with purple background and the green/blue, it's hard to know what to focus on. The underwater scene on the other hand works perfect.

Hey Dile my man! I owe u some crits from a while back but I was offline for a while. Anyhoo, your work is improving very quickly. Your digital work is looking very good. I would love to see a finished piece quality render though. Its hard to see whats not working with your sketches. And Im running out of crits!

September 28th, 2007, 07:27 AM
I have to agree strongly with Bendragon, id love to see a polished, finished piece of work, all this work is great n all but none of it feels finished. Its very important to see what sort of finalized work you can produce, if you dont then you will never know what true quality your at? Working on one piece, trying to get it to that next level, pushing yourself....it can tell you a lot about your own work.

I like that guy with an engine on his back :D,
looks a bit Hurricane inspired if I may be honest with you.

Also it looks like you're using that default pose of yours a bit too much (the one on the ninvja girl), imao, don't like it (I should've kept that to myself :O)

You have a pretty unique style :D

Jag köpte tre stycken moleskine för 320 kronor!
Vanliga blanka notebooks, två st large (a5) och en pocket (a6) :D

That was swedish for "I bought three moleskines for 50 (48.5 actually) bucks :D (plain, två large (a5) and one pocket (a6)"

Great stuff dile :]

I'm afraid I can't really crit anything that you wouldn't already know. You're putting in the work and doing the right things. Really, just keep on going.

[edit] ok maybe just one thing - maybe try to use larger brushes more when doing your speed paints, I'm seeing alot of areas that have the sort of chaotic filling in with a smaller brush etc. Dunno if you want that look or not but it is a little overwhelming and marginally unpleasnat for me. Also maybe just try and keep your brush at a larger size overall when doing any part of the painting, and only use a small brush for some finishing touches.

hei dile ...

i wanna start like this ... your enviros .. look good well done .. you improved a loot ... you can become pro at this verry soon just keep the good work going .... ok those are the good words ...
i think you should study hard at characters ...there are areas where you seem to lose control you make the character good till a point and then BUM wrong anatomy ...the major mistakes you do at humanoid forms is on the joint of the heands position of the muscles on the hands ... and kinda same to legs to ... im not good at that to ... but you know you c better mistakes in other ppl drawings ... soo aaa tri to do more studies ... take some notes if ya cant they really help bealive me i take them to after a sesion of life drawing or studiing

if you spend some time at this place you will have the power to incorporate a good char in to a cool enviro and that rocks ...

hope you take my advice ... the best way of evolving is life studiing

these is your one year old friend ... mouser .... cheers bro

amen to that

@Dile:

kid, you rock beyond measures. You'll be one of the best for sure, just don't let it get to you that much. Like someone mentioned earlier on here, takes commitment, patience and most of all... Time. Just make sure you give as much attention to your "Life" as you do you "art". Art is a life learning process, and you will continue to learn as you grow. But don't become too obsessed with it, obsessions never do anyone any good ever. Your young, you have lots to learn in the coming years. So while I do think this is a good move, I also think your taking it a little further then it needs to go. However, I respect your wishes 100%. Your a thousand times better and committed then I was at your age, i've always said that and you know it :P

You say you aren't coming back here till your done with your goals, obviously you wont see these messages unless you decided to reflect on your old SB. In which case I say:

HELLO TO YOU MR. DILE 550 PAINTINGS FROM NOW!!

first!

EDIT: Whoa, I just had to make sure I was first :D This will be a thread to watch for! I'll critique some other time I promise, I'm drunk right now.

EDIT 2: Ok something to make me look smart here:

the second image feels like some persian town, that is cold, with overblown highlights on the roof and in the sky.... if you add the sand color to it it will look exactly like persian something
on painting snow.... maybe needs a little more hard form.. doesnt have much weight now.... snow doesnt just stick on the edges of buildings, either it is laying on top of something or there is none.....

Also snow reflects - as it is water. It is not white, as the sea is not blue, it reflects the surrounding colors in the shadow, and in the highlights it reflects the sky color.... so a bit more sky work and then the snow can also look good...

What a feeling...
...
Take your passion, and make it happen
Pictures come alive, you can dance right through your life...

What a feeling...

ah ! so hes back !
nice start. Great brushwork and lot of details. You did not waste your time it seems. :)
One thing in both cites paintings, they are pretty monochrome, some warmer highlights there and there would be nice, the white you used to highlight the rooftops should be a desaturated high value of yellow rather than a cyan.

I know some of these are sketches but I know you like the odd crits too. Im thinking the mountains look too smooth atm, the shapes look too regular. You could carve into them and pull bits out to break up the regular shapes.
The snow scene looks awesome. I think some of the snow is a bit too intense though, like the foreground in the bottom left. It looks like it should be in the shades and a bit duller.
I like the way you handled the lighting on the cyborg.
Good to see you back mate :)

You've gotten a lot better since you disappeared into the ether a while ago and your environments and defining of shapes n shit is getting a whole lot better.

I cant really offer up any crits on your environments because youre cracking along with those fine and youre better than me at them thats for sure. Well maybe one thing... Resize! - Some of them are lookin nice but still a bit akin to thumbnails when it comes to details. Awesome stuff though.

The thing i learnt recently that theres no real shortcut and to see things as and when you do them, which is a fucker when youre in a rush to improve but hey... you practice a lot so alls good.

Those two look a little washed out if you know what I mean. Do some studies from photo ref and you'll see the kind of thing I mean.

I loooove the first one!!!!
Played Assassins creed didnt ya?

Beware, ur charcoal brush sometimes hurts ur edges.

I can honestly tell you I haven't touched a pen/pencil seriously for over a year.. so that is smth i'm gonna try to change

I love honest critique.. don't be afraid to tell me what i need to focus more / less on i easily get caught up in circles...and bad habits!

here is some stuff i've done

I finished reading alla prima by Richard schmidt a week ago or so and something he said that really caught my attention was that though artist usually admit having trouble wiv colors they usually have even more trouble with good drawing wich is something they are less prone to say.
I think there is truth in that and im afraid digitalpainting sometimes diverts me and a few artists from working on some fundamentals like drawing.

So yeah all this to say dont let dust settle on ur pencils and drawww, painting is not much without drawing/design!

Congrats on the new thread and best of luck!

:)

Thanks everyone!

tomorrow is the big day hehe! I'm going to see the headmaster, my class-teachers together with my mother to perhaps discuss a way for me to get into the art-classes .. odds are quite low since i've skipped class and haven't show interest in any school-related activities.. but hopefully they will realize i'm passionated about learning art!

the past 2-3 weeks i've had what some might call an art-block, but very temporarily in small periods, and i've basically felt my first depression. And all based on a very silly and stupid reason that i'd be 'very' colorblind. I am colorblind, but I have the smallest affection from it one can have.. so i'm blessed.. haha! I've done 100's of tests, and only on few test have i not been able to see the blend between hue of green and red. So the feeling is dropping, and I feel very good about it now. Thanks to the people on IRC , especially whiterose !

I'm trying my best to study art even when it 'doesn't quite work the first time' I know you can get through even if you start out with a really bad day. So that is basically the kind of updates i'm been giving you.. yeah hmm. if I can't join the arts program here where I live, i'm gonna do my best to develop my work to a good level to get into some swedish atelier ( yeah there are actually some good ones here! ) I've decided that whatever happens I will try to finish the 'gymnasium' here in sweden, that way I have abit of a safer future instead of risking everything to get into some fancy school.

again, you're support is very motivating, I think about art all the time. its hard to do something else with the same amount of passion to it. Thanks people.

anyhow.. here is some studies /redoings / paintings from today.. ! everything goes.. poo!

The last 2 enviros have a much better feel in terms of coulr and values. Your colours tend to look a litlle washed out. Plus where is tha chicks you like to draw? I see like 1 or 2 !??

As for the school thing - just practice and work hard! You'l get there (if you need too, propably be too good by the time comes!)

polish this one, the design's fine and it's looking very promising.

Hope you're big day turns out fine, hell, shit happens so don't get down if it doesn't turn out, you owe it to yourself to be the best artist you can be, just keep drawing those girls!

yay! I got declined ! teacher told me to 'write a letter explaining my motives for attending there' as the only way to change to art-class.

I'm so angry right now :( + I got told the normal BS from my science teachers.

Let me quote him on a few

"art is nothing you do for a living"

"the money won't exactly roll in"

"you gotta have something to fall back on if you do art"

"art is your hobby right ? we have a few students like you already, I know your situation"

brb, i'm gonna kill someone :(

Hey Carl, take it easy.
Murder wont wolve anything, (actually it will, but not everything) so keep doing art on your free time.
