hey man, lovin the dog painting!
you asked for crits on the steampunk dude so i'll drop my 2 cents.
I do not have the skill (no idea at all) about how to help with the color/painting, but i'm digging the brush work here.
About the anatomy, as it has already been said i'm pretty sure there's something wrong in his right arm (still too short imho), his neck/collar bones areas is a bit "compressed".
The detail level is very good esp in the belts/pouches department, altho some extra research in costumes (from other steampunk art or actual victorian costume/work outfits, stuff like that) could add some more interest in the design.
I must admit i was quite confused by the background as well, esp with it beign so "cloudy", the ships in the BG beign little more than a bunch of greebles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeble) (again, as for the costume ore reasearch here could help) and the fact they are so "crowded" up around his head make it look a bit too explicitly a composition choice.
What confused me more tho, is the objective of this painting (apart from it beign a good painting) esp since its going to be a portfolio piece.
It is not descriptive as a concept should be (esp since for some reason you "cut" him at the knees) and not "narrative" as an illustration should (imho) be.
I would personally make it a character concept with a background, but as a full figure, and with some more "storytelling" in it (if you're not designing just a costume, you still wanna descripe a character with an attitude, a story and-well, character). That means placing (pushing) more the expression and body language (which should be readable by the viewer through verbs and nouns-standing/running/punching fiercely/proudly/cowardly etc).
I personally think having these things planned out in advance helps achieving a stronger end result.I know i'm talking drastic changes, but imho a not-well planned illustration/concept might look more like painting/rendering practice more that a concept/illustration
i hope i've been clear enought with what i wrote lol :D
much respect!
ciao

Quike, I updated it! more christmassy now I think :) . It's always great to have you visit my thread.
Tigermilk, Good to see you here again, mate! Thanks. Should play around with color temperature when I get the time. Some complementary colors could indeed do the trick.
Gnoll! Can't thank you enough for your awesome critiques man. You're bringing up eye-opening points.
I'll recheck his anatomy and consider some references. Actually I'll follow all your advice :)-
I did way too short planning on this and changed my mind on what I wanted to achieve too often. It staterd out as a simple character design but through the process I was thinking about showing a whole scene then I went back and forth trying to achieve some more of a book-cover look. the figure went stiffer and stiffer throughout the process again and the second spaceship was more of a last minute add. But heya I think the whole thing is worth taking another stab on and change things. I'll hopefully lean more while I repaint it.
Flask, thaank you :) ! I can show you more lifedrawings once I took my school works home. got loads of quick poses actually And I went to a Dr.Sketchy evening/event.
didn't even know we had that in germany and then they even show up at my school. haha.
yeah anyway will get some of that stuff scanned after the christmas break.
Haven't had the time to work on the character but I promise myself to do so once I'm less busy.
Here's some Akira inspired fast sketching. I'm reading the comics again and I still love it to bits.

Here's a peek at what's keeping me busy these days. I got a pretty satisfying drawing gig for school- and languagetraining-books.
Life seems to be making up for the past few months which have been filled with way too much personal and familytrouble.
Now at the end of 2009 I can say I achieved one of my goals which was making considerably more money of art than the year before.
And I already got one of my new years resolutions on it's best way. With this new freelance job I am busy drawing for at least the next three months and can actually make a living of it even next to studying at university.
I'll have to see how this works out after that, it's not my dreamjob yet but these steps definately keep me moving. Sorry for all this "I'm so happy"-talk but I just had to get it off me. :)
anyway here's what I have to do for them. It's all drawings of interacting people which I then go on to color digitally. Cannot show more but enough to give you an insight (and to excuse my ever so overdue updates... :) )
861816
a wip for uni. sorry for the blurry photo but I'll color this with watercolor for a change and show a better picture of it once I'm done.
861814
also updated this.

and that's all. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

slick piece, i think your foreground creature could move up in the frame to kill some of that somewhat dead negative space above, which consequently would create a stronger diagonal between the two creatures and likewise would more accurately follow the focal creatures eyeline. Very cool in either case. :)

Trying out lots of things without overthinking or loosing time with rendering too much. I still do that with finished illustrations and longer poses at lifedrawing.

Long time no see! (thats for either of us....so shame on both of us!). Liking just about everything, great mix of nice line drawing and effective looking paints. The two EOW thumbnails feel so confident.
I really like the infusion of plants into your creatures - I'm getting deeper into creature design right now and it makes me want to go digital and play with the colors, as well as pushing the designs even further into fantasy for a change....interesting :) I'd love more feedback on my creature stuff so lets help each other out

ThomasM thank you very much :) !
aks cheers! that comic was lots of fun to work on and at least made me proud to have finished a bigger project for a change.
TheJester thanks man, I'm very happy to read this! And to be honest even if I show more digital stuff at the moment I enjoy working in ink and mainly linework most. I might show more of the comic soon, it's entirely done that way-
monstertree thank you :) ! he's the main character in the little comic you can see on those pictures.
Roger haha, yea that creepy guy is a mess. anatomically. no wonder he's hiding in the shadow. I don't think I'll get to finish one of the eow's before deadline but I might do a finished one soon. rock on, buddy!
Jakers ah yeah true... and thanks for the compliments :). We sure should help each other out some more. Even though I feel far from being any good with ceatures I'll be sure to try ;) keep it up, man!
Since I've been asked to show steps on this piece I thought I could share it here as well.
I don't know if this is any help to you guys but it might as well give you new stuff to critique and help improve my methods since I don't have a set workflow yet. Sometimes I work from a rough sketch like in this case, sometimes from clean linework or even with just big colored shapes in the very beginning.
feel free to ask questions and critique!

You use really nice palettes, maybe i´d try to go for some more exaggerated or strident tones sometimes, just to go out of the realistic palette. Just an idea to try, cause i really love what you´re doing.

monstertree, hehe, not that I'm too happy with any of my traditional painting endeavours but the antewater is my personal favourite too. :)
The vest/shirt idea started when I realized that the paterns small anteaters have actually resemble cloths most of the time. :) And looking at them when thinking about that makes them look so much funnier.
here's a few sheets of sketches compiled. I fill a few of these very quick pencil pages before I paint one in acrylics. from museum/photo/imagination.

there's more paintings that I made too, but they're too big for my scanner.. I will try to get proper photographs sometime.

I don't think one should worry too much about stars. I remember being down to three stars halfway though this sb and now it's at least a save 4 so I'm happy :).
When you pointed me to it though I saw it drop down quite a notch which must've been a 1star rating ;(. A comment with that would be helpful...

thanks so much for stopping by and the encouraging words! This really means a lot to me!
In the past few months some unforeseen problems in my family got in the way of making any art for myself.
And next to uni and work there was hardly any time to even think about posting something new up here.
But now what's left of the semester is just the big exhibition for the next 4 days. And I'm really looking forward to that.
Anyway to ease back into posting more over the break I can start with another painting I did earlier this year. More MegaMan .. :).

Hmm, I could've sworn I made a comment after the etchings.
Well anyway, the etchings are sick, dude.
The rendering of the rocks in the first megaman painting is damn good, really solid.
I think the pose of megaman could've been pushed further, push the contrast of angles between body parts e.g. shoulders, hips, head.
The rendering of the second painting is gnarly, reminds me of Mad magazine.
Again, I think the pose of Zero could be stronger. In that sort of pose, I think you want to lift the backside of the body and really arch the torso.
