View Full Version : Panorama Alienised

Last week I painted a panoramic photograph of Liz Hymans of a valley in the U.S. somewhere, just for exercise. Yesterday I took this painting and alien-ised it to the point where the original is not recognisable anymore. At the moment I find this a nicer way of painting then starting out completely blank. I'm learning more this way about how to make imaginary things look real. Well, more or less real anyway. Had fun doing it, hope it shows.

Alien one is much stronger. I would recommend adding a bit of atmospheric perspective on them to really bring a focal point to the foreground element. THat or add some light fog.
Good job

Interesting. I think you could try to get a bit more daring with the colors, especially in the alien version. In areas where the light hits, play more with really warm and bright colors to contrast with the mid-tones and cool shadows it will really help to make for a more dramatic sense of lighting. If you play around with the saturation of colors in areas and lessening it in other areas it will help to sell the depth as well.
I agree,a nd its also alot more realistisc, I mean just look outside, the light hits are warm, the shadows are cold, and the further away an object is, the more it takes over the color of the sky (you could call it desaturate, as it looses alot of color value wich are replaces into the sky color)

Mike: I hear what you're saying. For my feeling I already used pretty saturated colors in the foreground and lit area on the right side but maybe I am a little cautious. In any way I can give it a try, next time because I hardly ever go back to a painting once it's finished, prefer to start something new instead. What you're saying brings pictures to mind of 17th century landscapes painting with lots of drama- could be fun.
Evil % Bai Fan: I know what you mean. It's just that my sky color is very warm in the alien version so I would have to use a bit more desaturated magenta. I guess I tried to stay close to the original one, could learn to leave it when it's needed.
Anyway, thank you guys for taking the time to give all this constructive criticism. I'll use it.
