Well, after drifting arround this site for at least a year and a half and not posting much at all, I decided it was time for me to create a sketchbook thread. Posted a few bits and pieces last year, but its time to face my fears and do this thing. I've been inspiried again and again by all the wonderful art posted here, but also by the people who's art has developed during the course of thier sketchbook thread.

and a little man in my head was jumping up and down "me too, me too"

so here is some work I've been doing over the past week or two:yayca:

these all are quite quick, not very refined, but i usually am to impatient to detail....
reply would be great....:x

Well damn, you've been busy. :p

Those horse studies are pretty nifty, I could never get horses down pat. I really like some of the more interesting poses you've done, in particular the dude with the huge ruck, and the collection of sketches of the guy getting up (sitting down?) off the swivel chair. You've got some nice value studies, too. :)

Hey man, nice filled up pages you got here. Glad you're experimenting with ink and enjoying it, keep it going! The charcoal portrait with white highlights is nice too; using just the right amounts of white. Only crit is that the eye seems flat and unrealistic. You might want to round it out a little, notice the way it fits into the socket with the folds of the eye and what not. And just a small note, some of the images are a little big, making it difficult to see the work as a whole. Maybe resizing them to be just a liiitle bit smaller would help us in seeing it without scrolling up and down. Either way dude, keep it up! And post post post. Cheers.

What a day
Zord - thanks buddi, great to hear from ya. yep lookin at it now, i can see the eye has little depth.Btw, thats graphite not charcol, me and charcol never got along so well.maybe I'll try it sometime

Anyway, here are some pages from my sketchbook. They are heavily based on work from my fav artists here, Sinix and Wes2000, those guys are inspiring.
If im not supposed to put um this kinda work, so jus tell me and i'll take em down.

Hey dooood, cool to see you jumping head first into acrylics. Don't worry about the outcome, as success only comes with lots of time and lots of practice. Your lines are coming along, they're more confident than before. If I can offer just one crit, the guy you colored [digitally i'm guessing] his body is a little too big. The body doesn't shrink down in size, but you can work out anatomy issues with studies and more drawing. So just keep it up man, draw draw draw, studies studies studies. Cheers.

Well, here we are again. heres some work of late...had to get a new image hoster, photobucket is getting overloaded. Well, I been going through some Loomis PDFs I was recomended, and am finding them GREATLY helpful. If you havn't read them, read em.
I've done heaps of proportion work and anatomy work in my sketchbook, but dont want to bore you all, and can't be bothered scanning them...unless anyone is interested.

hey thanks for the comment! you've made lots of progress yourself. likin the pen doodles all i have to say is proportions and it seem you're already on that. oh and eyes, although i'm sure you like cartoon style eyes and it fits well sith your style. it always helps to have a better understanding of real eyes. it'd be nice to see some gestures of eyes from the mirror or something. later

Hey back from holiday, ready to post agian at last. Thanks for the comments tho Guys, its a real encouragement.
Sorawit - glad you like it, cleard your tired head ai? Hey when are you comeing back to NZ, dont you have to sort out your Visa before it expires bro. Dont loose that, they're hard to get.
Pennington - Yeah man lovey ou SB aswel. And you're right, i need to work from ref a bit more, just been playing with my own perceptions lately.cheers. BTW still have you addvice on working on eyes in mind, will get on to that soon.I've always loved drawing eyes., but kinda learnt off comics etc, so they are a bit stylised...:\
TheGnoll - Thanks for comment. Nah man i'm over the not many comments thing, i understand, cause i dont comment on half the threads i visit...why? because im lazy.:yayca: Keep it up

So I've been working through some of Andrew Loomis' book figuredrawing for all its worth and am finding it really good. Heres some work, and theres a whole lot more but i'm not gna post 'em, dnt wanna bore

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/4860/torso5hh.jpg

also been playing with graphite, these last ones influenced by artists such as Wes2000 and leonardo...Man, but my scanner sucks, it eitehr makes the image too light, or makes it excedingly grainy, very unlike the originals.

Hello my oceanic friend, wonderful to see your progress so far, your studies are excellent and show good improvement from the first post.

One thing I will say is try to make your lines more efficient, try not to use 2 lines if one will suffice, there is a tendency for people who are still finding their drawing legs to do that. Use long clean strokes and make sure you pay attention to line weight.

Cheers, Darren.

Sybo! You have been busy! I love your use of media and the detail! Only thing I'd work on is your structure, but also keep up the studies because that will definitely help. You can always look up shortcuts and methods to drawing a skull, but drawing from reference is key. Like Rusty said: just keeping hacking away at it.

Sybo, i'm digging the digi. work. Especially the pair of jester characters. Any plans for coloring them? It'd work really well with the first jester, his shoulder/face designs. And just a quick question, was the robot from the earlier post inspired by Cartoonfox? Just keep on keeping on man!

Your anatomy studies are solid and make it obvious that you have good drawing skills. One area where you seem to suffer are faces. I suggest you study the skull (preferably from life). Draw it over and over in different possitions until you can draw it without a reference. This should improve your faces greatly.

*tip* use construction. start out with a sphere, then add the eye sockets first, and then build from that.

goodluck,

Hey Sybo!
Thanks for stopping by my sb!
You do a lot of good work! I like that you seem to constantly vary your techniques.
Funny: You did the same Type-Exercise as I did in University. Big letter, smaller copy - great, Professors seem to have no new ideas ;)
Keep up the good work, man!

Pascallo -thanks also. Yeah it seems this exercise is a bit common in universities worlwide, I guess the 'proffesors' reckon we need to understand tha bauhous movement. I think it is a good foundation for understanding how design works- form/counterform, closure, ambiguity etc. thanks!
pennington - it has been too long. Its great to see how much ppl like you have improved!
Dreamworker - will do. thx

Its been a busy week, I've been traveling the country, I've been down to the bottom of New Zealand and back. I haven't found much time to put into art, but heres some semi-old work for various projects:

Sorawit - thanks man, you are a great artist role model, your painting skills are developng so well and I love the way you draw and paint and make art. Its very pure, keep it up, do it for Gods glory bro.
Factor Zero - thanks for dropping by. Alot of the latest work is done for Uni, ie the variety of work and tyography, which isn't really my thing, but fun. Nice SB btw.
Penn - thanks man, ink is a great medium to work in. Your SB is coming along well too. Very well.

March 29th, 2007, 02:59 PM
Wow. Lot's of work. I especially dig your watercolours and those architecture photos.
However those imagination figure drawings often need more volume. For example treat the face as cylindrical form and put all the features on it. It will look much more 3 dimensional this way.

Keep it up!

hey here a quicky update...just some studies really, everyone says I need to work on my heads and I quite agree. Therse are mostly from ref.:nohope:

Farvus - Thanks mate, I will keep working on my heads. Its amazing how bad habits spring up on you, I spent too much time copying and memorising comic and manga faces. Gotta focous on the real shapes, not just the symbolic objects that sit on the face.

RaistlinTheDark - Thanks alot! Very encouraging:wink: .

Why, hello fellow sketchgroup-er! I don't think I've seen your sb before, so my first thing to say is wow. I love love love your anatomy studies you've done. Really nice. You work has come way far since the beginning of your sb. Good to have you in our group! :] I agree with FactorZero about remembering bone structure, but at the same time, you've developed some interesting faces and facial planes - I especially like the bottom one in the last page you posted. Try picking a distinct light source and developing planes and shadows with that.

April 6th, 2007, 08:50 AM
Hey! I'm really loving your pen/ink sketches. They are really nice and fluid. I love those Loomis PDFs too, I look back at them quite frequently.
I think your line quality is top notch, but you definitly need to work on proportions. I see alot of problems with this:
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/5988/03292006063708pm5yi.jpg

The shoulders seem really off, and a bit large for how his torso is. You're really coming along great, loko forward to seeing some more!

FactorZero
April 6th, 2007, 08:05 PM
I think part of the reason the shoulders look so large is because the head is so small in comparison. You could definitely upsize the head a bit. Do forget to use heads as a measure for proportion and overall height.

Notorious K.A.B.
April 6th, 2007, 08:39 PM
Yeah, what Zero said, those shoulders look are waaaay out there,I know it's a pain in the ass getting 'em down, was one of my early obstacles.Keep 'em coming, peace.

April 7th, 2007, 12:18 PM
I know what you mean about remembering the symbols for say an eye or a nose, rather than the actual look of an eye or a nose after watching so many cartoons and readign manga. But the good thing about doing anatomy studies is that you can nicely make your own simple symbols and simplistic nose structures, etc and make them look accurate with ease... you're on your way.

Keep going, you've come a long way in a short amopunt of time already. it's impressive.

Hey all, sorry for the long time away, Im such a slacker...the last few weeks have been CRAZY, but unfortunately I don't have much to show that would be suitable for these forums: colour studies, company identities, essays, etc...but not much to show for it.

So sorry for all those in ssg#43, Im a bit of a let down not updating and checkin out your stuff. Its gonna be great to work with you all!:confident

now:
FactorZero - Thanks man. guilty, I do have a problem with correct skull proportions, and I will keep working on it..
bluefruitbowl - nice to meet you too, I can see your sketchbook going a long way. Don't be like me and limit yourself by stylization, then have to go back and learn how to draw again (eg, skulls). I gotta work on those lighting skills to...Thanks mate
Chiko - Hey, thanks for your encouragment. Yes you are right my proportions are all out on that one, he probably wouldn't stand up in the real world...will keep working on them bodies
FactorZero You're right, head's too small, and I usually can't be bothered using heads for measuring as it seems more hassle than it's worth, but I will keep it in mind.
Notorious K.A.B.-thanks, peace be with you also, shalom:confident
alenacat - I think I have to work a bit harder at getting out of my old symbolic style of drawing. But you're right, thanks, will check out your SB in a min
zacharybear - thanks man glad you like them, im not much of a painter in general, but I enjoy it.
pennington thinking about prespective on the skulls and planes is a good idea thanks bro:wink:

Sybo I love that lines of colors study! Just got to do something like that! keep it up man. My only suggestion is to start sketching from life, quick and fast sketches that capture the form as quick as possible! and make millions of those little sketches (apart from your longer studies of course). Do you keep a sketchbook with you most of the time?

thanks for posting im my sketchbook. you have some really nice stuff going on here. i am really enjoying the experemintation you are doing. keep up the anatmoy studies some of them are really awsome; others i think you need to spend more time on and look more carefully (like the one of the skeleton, there are more than 10 ribs in the ribcage, but i only count 7 on your figure). your inking is also really strong. what i like most about your stuff is your watercolors, they are AWSOME; do more, lots more.

GriNGoLoCo-AS I said, I failed that colour assignment>:| .But I'll get over it. You should def try out the technique, use a ruler pen and guache paint. I do often carry a SB round with me, I will keep your suggestion in mind.
bluefruitbowl-Sorry, I don't have nything much more finnished to show...glad you like that piece. I have a habit of doing lots of loose stuff and not much finnished stuff in general.
themissinglink-Thanks alot for comments, you are very encouraging. And your're right I need to put a bit more time into my work. Yet time flees my grasp. One moment it seems in my grasp, the next it is slipping and rushing away up up into the heavens...!ugh.

Hooray studies! I really like http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=137283&stc=1&d=1178943690 , something about the thick/thin lines. Torso seems a touch long, though. Nice shading! I'm in the same boat as you with finished work, which is why you ought to do something bigger/longer. It's almost like a different process to do a finished piece. It's good for you. Or something.
