ConceptartCohesion #001: 8th Day

Storyline:

The year 2446 CE.

Mankind and its technology have advanced at an exponential rate, however trivial political, religious and social demands have caused the splintering of former superpowers into smaller nation states, pitting themselves against each in a number of minor conflicts.

Since 2395 a minimum of 27 conflicts, hostile incursions and border disputes have been raging in various confined areas across the planets surface, sparking a new global economy.
Covenants of major corporations have banded together in various factions and are now the true international players, feeding the ever increasing demand of new weapons technology.
The change in style of warfare has rendered weapons of mass destruction virtually useless increasing an appetite for more unconventional weapon systems, specifically the VidaNova Corporations newest developments in the field of creating new species of animals bred for specific purposes.

The idea behind this new move is too harness the animals natural intelligence, sensory abilities, and ability to traverse difficult terrain. They are currently working on models for civilian implementation, ranging from beasts of burden for remote areas to leisure models as pets. However there have been worrying reports of certain products escaping from captivity, and having unexpected effects on the flora and fauna they interact with, conspiracy theorists place blame on a huge range of subjects, ranging from the Cytarabinoside used in manipulating metabolic pathways in the animals, to mother earth resting control back from humanity to satan himself.
Some minor political and religious groups are already rallying, trying to bring this series of unnerving events to the public eye, wild rumors and conspiracy theories are already calling this the 8th day of creation.

I definately have to get in on this - I can't wait to get started!

quick question -

should the final artwork be a glamour/enviorment view of the machine, or should it be more detailed with elevations and callout details like an engineering package???

Do whatever you think will get across your design most effectively.

Hideyoshi
February 28th, 2006, 10:42 AM
hm..just an idea/WIP. I will most likely change the whole thing and do another approach...

February 28th, 2006, 12:01 PM
That is nice Hideyoshi, very inspiring.

I've been struggling to convert some of my ideas into a reasonably designed sketch... and you've sparked some good ideas. Thanks!

rob-ot
February 28th, 2006, 12:08 PM
Jonoy - thanks for the feedback! I figured that would be the answer!!

I am struggleing with how to capture the details i would like to include as well as the massive scale.... maybe I just need some inset images....decisions, decisions!

Hideyoshi - awesome sketch.... I was on your website yesterday, damn you rock! can't wait to see what you put together for the final submission.....

thanks Foz, panagos, rob-ot!I am already working on a complete new design. :-)
You should definitely check out the big industrial design-background-guys who really have the knowhow abut his kind of stuff.
Feng's old website used to feature his old marker renderings, I had luckily saved them up at that time- great inspirations... :-)
But I have another guy for you who has some totally badass skills when it comes to ID...
I personally think he is better than Feng.

http://www.autodestruct.com/concept.htm

but you should also know these guys:
http://khangle.net/ and http://www.edleeart.com/index2.htm

hope that helps!

Nice start Hide. I hope the new organized effort works out. I cant say anything tho, cause I havent been a factor, at all.
Loved the links. I was especially taken in by Kang's work, but all three were excellant to look through.

February 28th, 2006, 04:39 PM
Hideyoshi - thanks for the links, inspiring and intimadating at the same time!

The second 2 were very nice but Paul Richards is "totally badass".... his concept art is freaking awesome!

Hideyoshi
February 28th, 2006, 04:49 PM
Glad I could help.
Haha, right, huh? Richards is scary...
I don't get it how he manages to achieve sooo creative shapes and lineature...f***!
And he is chunking them out like nothing at the same time! Have you seen the insane number of gauntlet designs? o_Ô°
Dragonspit: thanks, buddy!
I have the feeling we won't see too many entries for this one...
could be wrong, though.

ID isn't my strong point so don't expect anything great from this one. Thought I would take a more anamorphic aproach to the idea.

Eh, we'll see how it turns out....

March 1st, 2006, 10:21 AM
Marko - don't sell yourself short, look forward to seeing the completed version!

Hideyoshi - all of Richards work was solid, anatomy, perspective, creative....and you're right; there is a ton of it!! How long do you think he has been a concept artist? any idea of his age?

Also after much deliberation I think I finally have a strong idea..... it just hit me at dinner last night! I am hopeful my drawing skill will do my mental picture justice!

*question about the deadline since I am still pretty new here - is there a certain time on Sunday the 5th, or is it just any time before Monday the 6th??

Marco and hideyoshi, yours are looking great.... I stupidly thought i'd do at least 3 of the cohesions this week, but I've hardly started this one....Maybe i'll get 2 done, but who knows! I'm doing the IDW because I've only ever done it once. It generally doesnt get many entries, but hopefully the cohesion will mean more people will attempt it...here's my wip..

Marco: welcome to the forums! Nice start! I have also seen your Chow entry, looks very good! Think we will see some really promising stuff from you in the future!

rob-ot: hm...in his about-section it says he is married, so he might be in his 30s? Dunno, he's none of my relatives... ;-P
I guess he must be in the biz for long in consideration of his quality works...

yadam: I really like the concept! Love the ground! I was planning to have some organic stuff in my design as well, somehow missed out on that... :-/

The final image. Although Mother is self sustaining, this image hints that her main ECU can be accessed by authorized staff members of the Vida Nova Corporation. At least half of her many sensors are on at any given time, and you can see them lit with red LED lights. Two gun turrets at the top, and one at the bottom of the main body, keep her well defended. Several large and powerful magnets help to keep her hovering above the ground, and the creatures that develop within her bright green fluid sacs travel through one of two "birth canals", that lead into other chambers.

Hideyoshi that is a sweet change of perspective. Can't wait to see the finished version.

I think I may get in the game after all seeing the bar raised this far.

rob-ot
March 2nd, 2006, 01:20 PM
Here is my WIP - I really want to do the enviroment shot with some detail insets.... the more i thought about a mother machine I started to think that creating life was the easy part - the incubation process as well as getting them into the wild would take lots poeple to monitor it all, and heavy transports, IT, cubicals(wait do they have those in the future?) and guns, and prime real estate location... it has truely spiraled out of control in my mind....

anyhow - below is my intial rough
*enviroment view of the massive complex - half on land / half in water
*a look at the core of the complex the "mother machine".. i wanted this to be like a very large observation room - open to the public type of thing so that the conspiracy nuts don't think they are up to no good!! Actually all the evil creations are conveintly located in a sercet room deep in the basement!!

artiphats: thx, nice one!
goran: yeah, rock on!
rob-ot: thanks a bunch! Looking forward to yours!
Toxic: er...actually this IS my fnished version. :-P I don't want to add colour. Thanks!

edit: just saw yours right now: Cool stuff as expected! Huge thing! How are you going to render it?

rob-ot
March 2nd, 2006, 01:24 PM
Goran - I figured you might not be able to resist a sweet topic like this, really glad you showed up!!

rob-ot
March 2nd, 2006, 02:50 PM
Hideyoshi - good question, I haven't quite figured that part out yet!

I would really like to paint the enviorment view... but painting is really new to me I am not very strong in that type of rendering - I guess all the better reason to try it that way....

if painting doesn't go well, then it will likely be a marker rendering... similar in style to yours - I love that kind of look - plus I have the most control and comfort with those mediums... at the end I just want it to look bad ass!!

March 2nd, 2006, 07:46 PM
Holy moley HIDEYOSHI!... That's just mouth-wateringly, finger-lickin' good!... That's some harsh perspective going on there!!!....

March 3rd, 2006, 11:45 AM
Hideyoshi: Sweet Concept. Totally my bad. I still really like the perspective.

Here's what I've put together so far. More to come.

Hide, yeah, I really like this second one tons. Its larger, the perspective gives its appearance great height, the details are not overwhelming yet very sophisticated. Just think, you, sophisticated,,,naw. nice work.

March 4th, 2006, 12:40 PM
Hey Hideyoshi, your one looks great, very cool design!:)
I love the perspective, with which program you you do the perspective stuff? I see these red perspective lines in your picture. You did all in PS?

rob-ot: Yeah, just do what you're best at. I love marker renders! It's great to have some guys around using trad. media!
seba-boi, Dragonspit, digitalfly, broken spirit (nice entry!): thanks a lot, guys!
Gun trouver: thx, I did the pespective grid in Photoshop, then I printed it on brown paper. Did a marker sketch of the machine (based on my thumbs studies) and did the linework with 0.1 and 0.5 tech-pens. Colored in PS 7, going for the marker look. Well, I could have done it with real markers, but I wanted the freedom of digital tools :-)

rob-ot
March 4th, 2006, 07:45 PM
This will be my entry unless I get ambitious tomorrow!

I decided to change direction - my intial concept started to look like the ones already posted - plus I really wanted to attempt something new for me(painting) so I just did it from scratch in PS on my new wacom.....

err....it is definately not as techincally drawn as I like...painting is hard!!

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e101/Rob-ot/C_Cohesion_r2.jpg

yAdam
March 5th, 2006, 03:12 PM
rob-ot, I think your entry is pretty damn good. I like the concept, but I rekon it would benefit greatly from a tighter painting. I can't really make out some areas of the main machine, and also don't know what the green wall is..if its part of the machine, or if the machine goes into it..

I am hoping i'll get mine done. For some reason my computer was acting strange for a couple of days...

rob-ot
March 5th, 2006, 04:34 PM
Great stuff everybody!!

yadam - thanks for the compliment!

the green part was supposed to be an armored wall that the machine went into.....

I think you are right, the drawing could have been better if I actually designed it.... instead I foolishedly just started coloring before I really figured out any of the parts for the machine.... Unfortunately I don't have the time to fix it before the deadline - I feel bad about the way it turned out so I am going to re draw it later this week with pen and marker and post it in my sketchbook!!

I hope to see your entry - I saw some pretty cool stuff in your sketch book!

first pass at lineart - can't decide whether to try and paint it up (and make a right mess) or go with markers
