Wow. Your work is really amazing. Its really beautiful. and its not just the rendering skills either. The John John Jesse one... you can feel his lungs filling up with air. That's really great. The way the subject of tattooing gets transformed, the tattos that stay in the skin, the ones that seem to hover above it, or move off the body... and the paint drips, like excess ink rolling down, or, quite frankly, like the bleeding that invariably accompanies tattooing. Really smart. The one of Grime is incredible too... so subtle... "here are my tattoos, but I'm such a character, I'M the tattoo...".There's a Lucian Freud quality to it as well..... and the still life of the artists tools... really nice counterpoint.
As far as nitpicky crit-talk, I'd say my least favorite theme is the repetition of arms....its a little... obvious... but its a small point, really. It doesn't hinder my enjoyment. It just seems like for the reasons cited above you have a genuine sensitivity to your subjects individually and on the whole, and the multiplication of arms is an easy solution anyone could have thought of... but seriously, thats super nitpicky on my part. On the whole the show is really gorgeous.
Really.
Thanks for sharing. I'll bet your thrilled to have the show finally going up. Work like that really deserves every iota of attention it gets. Juxtapoz better do a cover story for this one! :D Hell, they better give you an Artforum cover!

thanks everyone-
Oblio- maybe we can do a portrait demo of you in montreal??...
Neorepto- thanks for the feedback- I'm looking forward to my show this weekend- I will get to look at ALL of these pieces together and really get the opportunity to sit down for a month and look over EVERYTHING and pick it apart, analyze it and see where I can push these in ways that I have not, yet... most of the pieces in this series, (about 32 of them) were created within the past 7 months- and that doesn't include being a full time freelance artist, teaching at two art schools and working on other shows and projects... I'm probably more interested in evolving more than anything- so I do appreciate the comments...
Phatandy- these are all oil paintings... reference away...
Janni- I will be painting kevin soon...
Yutani, Dan Milligan, James Kei, theincredibleandy, groovehomes and everyone else- If you purchase the book online, let me know and I can sign them before you get them in the mail...
Marko- when are you coming back??- saturday?
character- awesome, it is going to be a fun night...
next door at white walls- coro, el mac, graeme, dan quintana, john brosio and akira will be showing on saturday, as well...
seriously, you will not be dissapointed.
here are some more images from the series...
