Ok, so I was watching this movie called "Orlando" the other day (just an ok flick) but, I was amazed by the costume designs in the movie. I was thinking that maybe we can list movies that have some great reference. so, maybe we can list the time period and what aspect of the movie is good for reference material like costumes, make-up, hair, enviros etc.. Please dont list stuff like LOR or other popular movies that most of us have seen.
Orlando- 1300-1600/ Renascence costumes
Kagemusha- 1500/ Samurai costumes

Titus - Julie Taymor's take on a Shakespearian story mixing Roman togas with slick Naziesque and Communist design sence and propaganda-like grandiousness, and modern elements like limos and bullhorns reminicent of the 2004 Bush inaguration.
Julie Taymor also directed Frida and created the costumes for the Broadway production of the Lion King

you could add that information to the wiki ( http://conceptart.org/wiki/doku.php ). That way everyone can find it and add more.

Firefly (the TV series)- Inara wears the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. Great for those looking for nice patterns and interesting new color palettes.

I created a page here (http://conceptart.org/wiki/doku.php?id=references:from_movie)
Everyone can add stuff once they are logen in on the wiki (and it's easy).
VirusArtist: nice list. Could you clean it up a bit (if you don't want to add it personally in the wiki) because if someone else does it he/she has to know what exactly to write (not everyone has seen all films).
People could either add the stuff themselves or if they don't want because they have no userbname on the wiki then they should clean their lists up.
So if someone has something (clean and readable and with good info) it would be nic if you could mark your list as finished with something like TBA (to be added) at the end of your post.
And if you want you can use "wiki-speak" to make it easier for the people who put the stuff in the wiki.
The Firefly entry looks like this on the edit page:
Firefly
*Inara: Colour and design reference for costumes/dresses
*good reference for SF-western culture and design
the "" and """" designate a link
the "|" to show the name and not just the link
the *space**space* and *(star) are for a list item.
And if someone adds stuff it could be shown with added or something like that (so we have no link twins).
PS: the Firefly entry looks ok. It has some description (and it could always be expanded). The entry for The fifth Element is too short.I just added it so there is something more than just one info-thngy.

I'm thinking off the top of my head...
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Early 10th century costume and environmental ref for Vikings.
(Take with a grain of salt. I seem to remember one of 'em was wearing a kilt!?!)

I don't know if I can think of any off the top of my head, but in specific situations I often think back on a scene from a movie and go check it. Often things like a volcano, or what a storm at sea looks like in motion, etc. I'll post if I think of any specifics though

I'm thinking off the top of my head...
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Early 10th century costume and environmental ref for Vikings.
not quite right.. I love that movie(must have watched it over 20 times), but I have yet to see a Viking in there.
the armours used in "the 13th warrior" were from different time periods except the viking area (strangely enough).
apart from a lotta nicely designed fantasy leather armours you can find a heavily modified 16th century breastplate with shoulderpads, a conquistadore's breastplate, helm and gorget made of copper, a gladiator's helmet, a 14th century rope armour/mesh brynn combination (yep.. that thing really existed), and a lotta steppes armour in there. even the chainmail antonio banderas wears is a bit off .
its the same with the weapons: two handed viking swords (fantasy), some axes from the 14th to 17th century, fantasy scimitars, falcions and daggers.
while a lot of the fantasy leather armours could have existed (a fellow reenactor once told me "evrything that was possible to make back then WAS made.. we just didnt find anythign yet"), some of the designs are a bit off (the "look over function"- syndrome)...
the costumes are quite accurate though.. same goes for the enviroments (ships, houses etc)
I would definately put the 13th warrior into the category "medieval fantasy"... while not historically accurate, the design fits the movie well, it just bugs me a bit that they didnt use some accurate armour designs from that time period.
look at viking, vendel, byzantine (rus vikings were hired as mercenaries by the byzantine empire) and rus armours, helmets and weapons- there's a wide variety of killer designs to find (especially the vallentuna helmet and armour)..
sorry for the wisecracking, but I just had to correct that information (been researching and making armour from different time periods for nearly 10 years now...)
cheers,
Etienne

In fact the movie that gives sensible correct medieval reference still has to be made. That´s at least the area I´m quite sure of doing medieval research for more than 20 years. Regarding Hollywood´s attitude to correctness I wouldn´t use ANY movie as a reference for "Historical" costume. I even know some WWII cracks that laugh about "Private Ryan" or "Band of brothers" ...
Just a hint before you go on use movies as reference for your next historical work.

VirusArtist: I addded your list from above. Great work.
Fipse: I added a disclaimer so people who don't know but need exact historical reference are warned.
I reworked the template for a little bit more readability:
Film name\\
--- Inara: Colour and design reference for costumes/dresses
--- good reference for SF-western culture and design
the "" and """" designate a link
the "|" to show the name and not just the link
the "\\" for a new line or the first list item will move right next to the title
"--- " for the list items (works a little bit better)
If someone finds a typo either correct it or write here that you have found one. I try to just correct the ones that I am sure of (english not first language) and leave the ones where I am unsure.

Ah just the right thread to ask my question. I know that real life is the best supplement especially for gestures, but when your stuck in your house and no where public is close by, is it ok to practice gestures and life drawings from certain movies and video? Just curious is all. heh

You can use anything as reference. Real life just is more real and better for natural lighting and all the things that you don't get in films or photos.

I love "is it OK" questions.:P Like if you do something wrong someone's going to pull you over to the side of the road and ask to see your artistic license.

this is actually a vavorite meathod of drawing used by George Pratt. He would take great movies like Das Boot, and play in on the projector in class, and pause at interesting moments, with great lighing and composition and draw from it. It may not be ok to strait up copy the fil and try to sell the work as your own, but its more than ok for practice, or for reference sake.
