Wanting to start painting in photoshop

Since I started browsing and posting in these art forums (CA, and others) I have wanted to try my hand at digital art. I haven't had use of my own computer for some time now, and the computer I was using wasn't mine so i couldn't install and use PS. Just the other day I finally got use of my computer back and am ready to try my hand in digital art. so my question is can anyone point me in the righ tdirection for a good straightforward tutorial for getting a total beginner up on his feet (other than the help files). Thanks.

Well, i dont really know of too many tutorials, but from experienc, i know that just messing around with the program helps alot. Try making yourself sig images, or just messing around with filters and patterns until you see something that you think is interesting. You can then save it and use it for future projects. The best experience comes from using the program yourself. Doing it from tutorials never really helped me too much unless i really liked what i got and remembered how to get it.

But this is just my opinion.

I have used photoshop before, but just for some picture editing really (and that was on a mac, i havent done much photoshop work on pc, is it much different?). I spent some time today messing with it, but didnt get much done (im trying to catch up on updating my sketchbook, not much of a daily sketchbook if its been 3 or 4 days since i updated,right?). anyway i will mess with it more and see if i cant figure it out, but even a basic guide to getting started wit h sketching/painting in photoshop would be killer. thanks for your thoughts though.

Wow definitely nice tutorial Prometheus, thanks! I'm pretty sure there is a thread in the photoshop section of the board that bumskee started a while ago as well; nice method of blending and such in PS. thread should be called digital painting in PS or something along those lines
