View Full Version : I sometimes get frustrated.

Ive been on concept art for a bit now. Must admit Ive learned quite a bit of stuff here and there by viewing quite a few tutorials, and just looking at others members work. Ive approached this forum in a very humble manner in regards to my level of skill. And honestly, Im wondering, whats up with the lack of feedback sometimes? I post stuff up every once in a while, just to watch it dissapears a few pages with sometimes zero feedback. Im trying to learn, just like anyone else, from my errors and with the help and input of others.
When this happens, I start of course getting the idea, what is that Im doing wrong?
Maybe Im impatient to learn?
Am I posting in the wrong forums? Why do people choose to simply ignore what Im guessing, they dont like? I mean, I wouldnt mind being told that some parts of the images dont work, or that I could approach certain situations that artists come up on in a different manner. Thats what Im looking for, and for some reason Im not getting on here. And Its sometimes very frustrating. So please, tell me what Im doing wrong. Im looking to learn and grow off of being on these forums, and not as some lurker, but as someone who contributes his own works as well to the creative pool that is CA.

I have noticed this somewhat, i do not know why it happens. It seems circumstantial in some, if not all, senses. But aye, brutal and unforgiving crits can be nice :D. I remember reading somewhere, and i can see how it may apply, but someone may tire themself out saying the same crits many times. Though some may not. Anyway, best of luck! :D.

Shit happens. All in all, if you think that you are getting better, then you should be proud. Others being proud does not always equal you being proud. But, then again, this is coming from a guy that hasn't updated his sketchook in 2 yrs. ..

One of the easiest ways to get crits in your SB, is to
1: link in your sig
2. Give c&c in OTHER peoples SB´s!
This is was CA is all about, give and take. You gotta put something in the till to get something out! Im not talking about stuff like "cool dude" or keep it up man" or " great stuff buddy" but if you spend some time and consideration in posting in someones SB, and give valid pointers, youll soon find that people appreciate it, and will return the favour.
Good luck Tim

I'll try that (even though I only have an anatomy study topic...).

Sometimes you'll have to give people some clues as to the specific crits you maybe looking for. There's a huge turnover of artwork everyday and people certainly don't have time to look at them all, let alone crit them.
You might as well post the link to the stuff you want crit now to make it worth your while.

JERI's right. Give a quick blurb on what you're trying to accomplish, where you ran into problems, and what you can't resolve will allow folks to concentrate their comments.
And in general, there are so many people that don't use references, that it gets kind of old saying, "try a good reference".
It is interesting to see which images garner a host of critical comments and which don't. I think the ones that look like they took more effort seem to do better. I don't know how to put that into an image, though.
I would also recommend going over the Peer Project (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53517).

I think some are just easier to crit than others... some have alot of things wrong, and feedbackers may not have much time =\

"I think some are just easier to crit than others..."
Definitly! It's easy to gush over the stuff that's just awesome, and it's easy to pick apart the stuff that's weak... but a great many of us fall somewhere in between. (BTW - I've had similar experiences with my posts.) I think a lot of reviewers prefer to move on to the "easy mark" and comment on work that more obviously needs help.

Also keep in mind a lot of us don't have the energy to give great critiques or any critique at all.

I definitely understand where you're comin from Sirio, but as others have said sometimes this forum is just far too fast for people to see what you've done. Advertising your sketchbook is really a great way of getting people to it, can't say how many people I would have missed if they hadn't had a link in their sigs.
Also going along with what Pixeldragoon said, some people it's easier to give crits to, some it's not nearly as easy. With all the amazing artists on this forum, sometimes it's hard not to want to just give a simple compliment haha. I'm trying to break that habit myself; I often just think "this person definitely knows what they're doing better than me, looking to find a flaw in their work isn't the nicest thing to do".
If you can, I'd say try to join in on a group of somesort like the Peer Project dogfood was talking about, or the sketchbook support groups. I just discovered the SSG recently and I can't say enough how nice it is; great way to get to know some people and great way to get/give some advice. Either way, I'm finding the more you get involved, the more people you meet and the more you can offer help between each other.

Thats definitely helped give me a fresh perspective on things. I appreciate everyones input on helping me clear out the notions I was getting.
I can agree that I have quite a bit of respect for dogfood, hes given me quite a few crits, and most agreed, great tact. Also for everyone else who has gone out of their way. Much appreciated.
Ive just realized how many people are advertising their sketchbooks, good idea! :) As for critiques, wouldnt have too much to say, because all Ive seen is awesome in the sketchbook section. Been blown away over and over again. I would only have compliments on the most part. :P
I sort of related to CCthroms comment on being the 'in between' phase person, because I sure have felt that way at some points. Nothing interesting enough to pick a bone at.
Ill check out the SSG and other community related progs. like peer project, getting more involved surely never hurt.
Thanks again.
