ceberae:
concept: Nehebkau
A nehebkau can be found roaming the southern deserts easily enough from miles away, its giant horns a dead giveaway among the endless sands. On its back it carries a portal to other worlds. One must approach it with a destination in mind; otherwise it will choose a world for you. Little is known about the origin of these serpents, aside from the fact that it is unwise to bother one when it’s shedding its skin: the portal may lead you to a place no mortal would want to be in, regardless of what world you chose. Some believe, that nehebkau is really everywhere and nowhere at once, and the serpent that greats you is the very same one that sees you on the way out.

Jonoy:
concept: I had seen the disgusting looking creature in Halicor's laboratory every time I had been there, cowering in the corner and shivering in fear; wether of Halicor or the stranger that was invading its home.
I knew the portal had to be in the laboroatory, more than once I had hidden beneath his stairs watching and waiting for the moment he would use it but never had I seen him do so. Yet he would disappear from his laboratory for days on end with that sickly looking creature still cowering in the corner, the stitched mass of scar-tissue running vertical down its belly oozing pus and ichor.
Had I not felt a brief moment of pity for the grotesque animal and cleaned up its filth I would never have seen the pseudopod trailing into the wound, nor tried to pull it clear as I cleaned away the goo. At the mearest tug upon it the creature had begun unlacing the stitching and to my initial disgust, had opened the wound in its belly wide, emmiting a gastly pale blue light thru-out the room and across my face. Echoing ripples of light danced into an impossible distance within that cavity while the surface rippled around the edges like a shaken mirror...
And to think that the portal had been under my nose from the very beginning...

Hookswords:
concept: The Void Wraith
Known by many other names...the void reaver, the world eater, its kind has struck fear into beings on hundreds of planes. By nature it does not normally bother with beings as small and pointless as our kind. Only when starved and low on the energy it needs to shift through planes will it devour a planets most miniscule life forms. Its appetite can only be truely quenched by feasting upon demons. A demon hunter. Often they hunt solo, though they are known to hunt in packs for larger prey. Its long serpentine body is its main transportation device when on land. It also uses this like a boa or anaconda to entangle its prey.It is capable of of standing on its three bladed arms to psition itself or to strike with its snake like body. The two upper arms are used as its main attack weapon, while the lower is a secondary as well as a finishing weapon. Its venomous stinger subdues its prey to turn its lifeforce into food and energy. The orbs are its device for traveling through planes. Its body produces them through time. The bigger the wraith gets the more it needs to guide its massive body through time and space. Multiple brain centers provide control and sight in different directions.

JakkaS:
concept: Mortaris - Seeds of Orpheus
Fragments of description from Aristu's Guide Book of Lower Levels of Hell.
"... This creature can give u a hope or you can curse it... "
"...I think this beast escaped from some kind of astral plane or maybe straight from hell. This is
definitely a predator, but it does not eat flash or bones. This monster feeds on human's life energy. It can suck whole life from the victim, but it takes a lot of time. How does it make that? First, I want to say it's very disgusting image. The beast falls down on the chest of the human. Then it injects a drug into victim's body, straight into human's mouth. Drug is working very fast and the body and mind go into a some kind of coma. But,... and this is the most interesting part..., when human is in coma, Mortaris opens a portal. This portal has connection to the astral plane, sometimes it is hell, but sometimes it is heaven. When the portal is opened, human's soul must go into it. When the soul's journey begins, beast can start to drain the victim's life energy. When the human is in the astral plane, he can talk to dead souls, angels or devils. Therefore, this journey can be very pleasant but also can break your spirit. Of course it doesn't matter, because usually, after a few hours, Mortaris can suck out all humans energy, and the body and mind dies..."
"... I have read some information about a some dark sect, were using these creatures in the "Seeds of
Orpheus" rituals. Their priests can go across the portal to hell and then return. Sometimes they die. They just cannot or don't want to come back. They say the only thing you have to do, when you are connected, is to remember that you WANT TO GO BACK, to your material plane..."

Chuck,mate.:
concept: Carmine Spinner
this intelligent creature exist in one of the many parallel universes, living in small groups.
floating in mid-air due to a very low gravity pull it feeds on peripatetic energy
pockets.
the "Carmine Spinner"`s name derives from its unique ability to rotate around it`s axis in varying speeds. as this marvelous creature gets close to the speed of light and then pass it, it becomes pure energy, all its matter reach a plasma phase and the Spinner turns into an open portal to other dimensions and parallel universes, "ripping" a hole in the space-time continuum.
then other CSs travel through it to visit and explore other worlds.

Pawige:
concept: The Oortaj are strange creatures, looking like a nightmare cross between an ape and an insect. They breath magic, rather than oxygen. A spongy growth along the inner arms and chest is filled with dense capillary beds, where much of the inhaled magical energy is stored.
The diet of this beast consists mainly of hapless adventurers. Two of the Oortaj will work in tandem to connect a portal to something other than the endless nether, creating a brilliantly shimmering silver sheet of portacular power.
The average adventurer, blinded by a lust for bread (not the kind made of flour) and breasts (also not the kind made of flour), will rush headlong into any portal he spots, assuming it will somehow take him closer towards his ultimate goal (adventurers are not often renowned for their intellect). Sensing the disturbance in the portal, a hibernating Oortaj will wake and instantly cut blood flow to the flesh generating the portal.
Adventurers, cleanly cloven in two, make a very nutritious (not to mention tasty, with a bit of salt) meal for a pair of hungry Oortaj.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
MIKECORRIERO:
concept: The Portal Weaver
The Portal Weaver travels through dimensions, it lives in a 3-dimensional world but builds its web in the 4th dimension in which it captures it’s prey. This dimension is invisible on planet’s un-like its own and only visible to the Portal Weaver itself, therefore making it easy for it to capture various types of prey ranging from the smallest of mammals to the largest of creatures.
The shock of entering a portal leaves the victim suspended in animation, rendered helpless. Floating in an endless trap of time, frozen in shock and waiting to find out what their fate will be.
The Portal Weaver hops from one dimension to the next checking it’s portals for its next lunch. Usually the Portal Weaver will create a maximum of 8 portals each leading to distinct locations. As quickly as the Portal Weaver can appear, it can disappear staying close to it's invisible portals to retreat whenever it may feel threatened.
A rather intelligent horse sized breed of arachnid unknown to most other than it's victims who live a rather painfully short life. It would be an unlucky hand to have been dealt if you walked through a portal where it's hatch-lings wait to feast on their first meal.

depleteD:
concept: Chulyen Pheonix
A genetic anomoly of the pheonix. Much like an albino of any species. The difference between the two is that the portal opener turns to dusts and the skeleton slowly melts into a puddle which then clumps up to form an egg and incubates in the ashes. This attribute of its rebirth leaves it vunerable to exploitation.
West coast tribes of Canada would revere this bird. It would fly into lodges and eat the the mushrooms that were lain on the table. Resembling a raven the
tribes would bow before it. The psylocin from the mushrooms would dope the bird and take away its ability to fly away. Unable to process the poison
from its system, it would stay in the hall and eat the food the native canadians would provide to it. When it eventually died from old age,
the extravagant death would awe the tribe and the elders. One wise elder came fourth; swirled the melting Portal Opener's skeleton to speeding up the melting process and stoping the formation of the egg. By interupting the rebirth process a portal would form in the swirling ashes and liquid bone. This was a portal to the afterlife.
It was a time of need in the tribe, a dispute had broken between the elders of who should lead after the death of the tribes matriarch.
The serendipity of the pheonix opener's death gave the tribe the opportunity to consult their ansestors.
When drastic disputes would arise, tribes on the west coast of canada would place a large offering of mushrooms to attract
a portal opener. They would decorate it with cerimonial attire and it would stay until death would come. The ritual would be performed in secrecy to consult the dead and avoid unessessary contamination of the two interacting planes of existence.

Soulweaver:
concept: Ghent
These enigmatic creatures are native to the space around black holes. They live by devouring anything and everything that is pulled their way, ranging from stray spacecrafts to asteroids and planets that have drifted off course -- some say they even prey on light itself. Almost as much mineral as they are animal, they are covered in the front by a calcareous shell, while the rear is coated in a bizarre pearlescent substance that distorts the immense gravitational power of the nearby black hole. The ghent's three "eye"stalks can focus this energy into the toothy maw that dominates its body, forming a portal that disposes of anything the ghent itself does not consume.
So, what happens to the matter that goes through the portal, you ask? It's a mystery to science, but according to myth, it is ground down into the most basic form of energy, the building blocks in the formation of new life and worlds. So, although ghents are forces of absolute destruction, they also have an unwitting hand in the mysteries of creation.

walnut:
concept: These quiet and docile creatures are the prime means of personal dimensional travel around the Galaxy these days. Their ancestors were discovered someplace now long forgotten in the Outer Rim, a place where physics can get quite screwy. These creaures had adapted there so well they were capable of hopping through realms as easy as a fish swims in water. They have been modified genetically to serve human (and other intelligent races) purposes. Breeding and training of a portal opener is a pricey enterprise, so only the richest of the rich can afford one. Consequently it's become a huge status symbol to take your portal opener for a walk, preferrably on a planet three parsecs away from your own. Also worth mentioning: they're great with kids, sustain themselves on radio waves (country music is a big fave) and their main mating sound goes something like "floooob".

Standing:
concept: Portis Cleavii
These 'slugs' as they are known by pilots and engineers are a result of genetic manipulation of a benign and ancient creature. The existance of slugs is the basis of man's ability to travel through space. The leading edge of their nose, or 'prow' creates temporal rifts, allowing slugs to pass through huge distances of space in tiny increments of time. The energy released by this fission is the food source of the Portis and is absorbed through the porous skull.
Through genetic manipulation, the Portis has been bred to enormous sizes. An interstellar cruiser, or other large vessel is shackled to the back of a Portis, and, pushing it forward, is able to fly through the temporal rift created by the Portis' passage.
The tiny, vestigial arms were bred onto the creature's belly and made very sensitive to prevent it from alighting on planets or asteroids as they were wont to do before being used in this commercial application.

Orion9282:
concept: In the wild, the portal opener is docile. Evolution has given him a portal located in the end of his tail which is utilized for small nuts, it’s main food source.
More intelligent species on this planet (human-like) have learned to sedate the portal opener and harvest their abilities. On their own the portals are not powerful, but when combined they can open portals large enough to be utilized by the human-like inhabitants.

concept: --Begin Transmission--
Arcturian Xenogeist
A predator of incomprable deadly power and cunning. The first Xenogeist evidence was disovered on a small planetoid in orbit around Arcturus. What few field notes could be collected from the grizzly holocaust scene were puzzling at best. However, the research crew were able to glean a few details about the nature of the beast before they met a swift and unexpected end. The Xenogeist possesses the ability to stretch temporary interdimensional portals. Based on observations, the Xenogeist utilizes anti-matter nodes located at the end of protrusions along the skull to breach the dimensional fabric and slip into an alternate reality, one in between the previous dimension and the creature's destination. The researchers speculated that this dimensional limbo might be the Xenogeist's true home. As the Xenogeist leaves a portal, nodes similar to the cranial nodes siphon the energy sustaining the exit portal and transfer it back into the organism's body. In this way it is believed that the Xenogeist expends very little energy and actually recycles the same warp energy over and over. Strangely enough the Xenogeist feeds on organic matter although its metabolic and digestive systems are still a mystery. The first recording of the Xenogeist found it portaling in unexpectedly behind its prey to panic it in the opposite direction. At this point the Xenogeist warped quickly in front of the frightened animal and swallowed it whole. Such a devious intellect is a cause of great concern for the multiverse and its inhabitants. Beware the region surrounding Arcturus.
-- End Transmission--
The Xenogeist depicted above is in transit between dimensions, hence the motion blur.

concept: The Portal maker is a crawling vine that when there is enough branches rap themselves around each other to make a portal. At the back a thin bio membrane forms that can produce any colors to attract insects into the Portal. There they are consumed for this is a portal of no return.

flatliner:
concept: The Portal Opener can be found on some of the larger gas planets, swimming through their vast seas. Over thousands of years it developed a unique way of traveling the great distance between feeding grounds. When required, the creature is capable of releaseing a large burst of energy from its tail, which starts a chain reaction with the surrounding gasses. The result is a brief but stable wormhole that connects the two points.

romance:
concept: The Maggot-Eyed Carrion Feeder
Brought in by the Xanians to clean up the dead of war. The Xanians, an alien race (or better yet, army), take over planets in hope of harvesting planetary resources. They are sensative to specific bacteria that fester on corpses, so they avoid the dead, and release hundreds of thousands of Maggot-Eyed Carrion Feeder to 'clean up' the mess before they land.
Maggot-Eyed Carrion Feeders are extremely social, except when they are feeding. If there are other Feeders in their 'harvest' zone, they will collect their food and then portal to a "personal plane * " to eat solitarily.
The Feeders, released in thousands, were able to clean up the dead off the surface of Earth in weeks. The survivors of the war are either held as captives, in hiding, or serving in the Resistance.
* a section is time and space reserved solely for a single Maggot-Eyed Carrion Feeder.

concept: belluna
These highly intelligent creatures roam the outer planes of existence, and travel dimensions through self made portals. Ranging to size of a large cow, these floating creatures feed off negative matter, such as shadows, and therefore frequently gate to the negative material plane for food. Fishlike in appearance, these floaters use psionic abilities for almost everything. Portals are created from a fifth "eye" on top of it's head, this eye is sought after for creation of teleportation and gating items and scrolls.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
_Urchin_:
concept: Fungiform Annelidae
It's a segmented wormy type thing that burrows through the soil building up a static charge stored in the fringes of pilli down its sides. When it finds a good spot, it sends up its tentacles that have mushroom-like nodes at the end. When prey steps inside the ring of nodes it activates the teleport which sends the prey directly to the stomach, hence the creature has no need of a mouth. The teleport phenomena led to the superstition of keeping outside "faerie rings" in the forest to avoid being carried off by the wee folk.

Voted for Jakkas. I think the piece succeeded in the realms of both creature design and general craftmanship/tecnical skill. Jakkas deviated away from the typical and now almost cliche' beastlike animal. His creature seemed to have a devious cunning to it and was a bit humanoid but still fell well within the specifications for a 'creature'. I think as long long as guys like Jakkas keep contributing to this forum we'll all have something to work towards. Good job man.

voted for orion as well. i love the idea of the portal being used as a device for gathering food, but not in a violent way.... just a creature that minds his own buisness, gathers his nuts, "portals" them back to his home, doesn't try to hurt anyone or anything. but of course, something that cool, we'd have to exploit it and try to use it to our advantage.
and i guess what really makes your piece stand out for me orion is that i can relate to that creature. lots of people can, because lots of peple have been taken advantage of, had their talents "stolen" by someone, a boss who takes credit for your work, etc. we've all experienced that, and thats why i chose your creature.
great concept, and very well executed.
urchin's concept was pretty cool, the idea of the portal taking you directly to his stomache, thats fucking great. and you were able to relate it back to real fairy myths. another plus. good job on that man.

Orion's piece is beautiful and a great concept. The two differing styles (ie. sketch and paint) also compliment the artwork very nicely. I feels right, like the concept has place in a bigger design. Very well done.

its just fucking cool. i like the art and the description, but in the end i always seem to root for the underdog, and orion's creature is the underdog (from its story, not necesarily here on the forum, just from its story)

MikeC, JakkaS and Chuck, Mate almost had my vote but I had to go with complete2.
I joined the voting with an open mind for something that I enjoyed not only looking at as art but also believing as something that could open a portal. Most (including my own I think) just had some magical way of creating a portal but the urine idea complete2 used was very fun and interesting. The art might not be as detailed as most, but still the colors and line work are something I enjoy the more I look at it.

Chuck Mate got my vote. I love the simplicity of the design and colour. It also feels very alien. The thing reminds me of a critter called the Golden Wheel Spider or some such which cartwheels down sand dunes.
Stephen R - Great creature with loads of character. Good to see something whimsical.
Fozzybar - Sweet render, nice design, lots of character
Jakkas - Great design and render, tons of atmosphere
Romance - Great render. The textures are really strong.

Romance - thanks for the vote - and for the compliment!
I absolutely hated my entry by the time it was finished though and decided to repaint it - if anyone cares to see the newer version and tell me what you reckon, go to

Anyway, thanks again for the compliment - yours was brilliant btw and a very close second (IMHO) to Orion, who came out gangbusters for a first entry.
I loved the practical application for the portal - top idea and rendered with such intuitive marks and colours, exactly what is lacking in my own work!

I am happy that someone likes my work so much that say it is the best! However, I know I am not the best. I am far away from that.
In every COW I think "this" entry is the best, and you guys chose for the best completely different one. Really, I do not know why some works wins and some does not. However, every week I usually have same problem. Which one to chose?

voted romance's creature: Liked the overall design and the piece was visually appealing to me than the rest, im sold. Only crit was i wish you could have incorporated a lil more of a scene in the backround. Perhaps maybe the interiors of a direlect apartment building to illustrate your discription of the setting.

When i first came here i voted for the best rendered no matter what, then i changed to most sutible to the description. Now its just what i like which was Stephan_R. Ones i wish i could have voted for too are romance and JakkaS. I feel a bit guilty for not voting MIKECORRIERO as i think I subconscious judge his work not only what is there but on all his previous entries as well and his blood splattered carnage was better anyway now that i am aware of that i will stop it.
Mitze work on a more complex design...i mean vines...come oooooon
It was part of a floating whale like thing in the desert. But it looked too much like that thing that warps space in Dune. So i cropped the dimension-making bit off and in a quick patch job made vines out of it. Sorry

Ya, I think the reason I participated is because it's nice to be given a subject just to get myself working rather than sitting there thinking up what I don't have the skill to draw yet. All these topics are way too ambitious for me at this point, but it's a great excuse to reach beyond what I would normally be doing. The competition aspect of it just lights a further fire under my butt to push myself further cause I know I'm serving baloney sammiches at the steak cookoff. Thanks to all who's voted for me, your support is greatly appreciated.
Standing - I prefer this version of your space slug. It's reads a helluva lot better. I'm glad you entered it.
Kresh - Thanks for the vote. I've been trying to stay away from putting COW's and CHOW's in backgrounds. To me it wastes time that could be spent designing the creature and futher rendering it. Mitze: It feels really good to see there's a lot that enjoyed mine, and a few even enjoyed enough to ues a vote on it. I approached the contest knowing I cannot yet render like most here, or always think up a concept that fits dead on. I liked the idea too.
Lady_Medusa: Again, totally worth any effort I put into the idea because I got a smile from you and several others. It'll definitely be my goal to keep it up, thank you.

First, thanks to all the people that voted for me so far... It's flattering, and I didn't expect such a good response to it. Also... in Complete2's comment on why he voted:
i love the idea of the portal being used as a device for gathering food, but not in a violent way.... just a creature that minds his own buisness, gathers his nuts, "portals" them back to his home, doesn't try to hurt anyone or anything. but of course, something that cool, we'd have to exploit it and try to use it to our advantage.
You nailed my thoughts right on the head when I was developing this creature. I kept trying to reason why a creature would have a portal in the first place... it didn't make sense to me for it to always be a tool for violence, and animals/creatures aren't always smart enough to be so malicious with their abilities. So, thanks again.
Secondly, WHOA (about the whole voting fiasco)!
Complete2 nailed my thoughts right on the head again, and I feel foolish. I understand now. I'm not voting for mine in the Enviro Design (voted for sketchling), and I get it. Sorry that I offended anyone out there.
Redehlert, please don't lose respect so fast! Beginner's mistake!
And Mike, I was one of the first persons to vote, and did it because I didn't expect many people to vote for mine anyways (check out the Badland Bastion entries... Orion=no votes :( ). I didn't think that it would have much impact, nor be such a topic for discussion! I understand your surprise, though do you think that there might have been a better way to bring it to my attention? Sorry again.

Thanks for the apology...
And yeah, it wasn't a surprise that it was brought up... I was remorseful for the majority of the week and have felt pretty shitty. I didn't say anything because I didn't know how to bring it up, being the new guy, I guess I was too shy.

Had too many other things to do this week, and never got a chance to make an entry.
Voted for ceberae. I liked the fact that the portal opening is such a core part of the design. Lots of other entries are cool-looking critters that happen to open portals - you could take the portals out of the pictures and you'd never know they were portal openers. However, ceberae's entry is such a successful design that it just screams "Portal" to me. Nice job!

My suggestion - When someone posts something you don't agree with, ignore it. It's their opinion and/or their ignorance, why bother commenting on it. Or PM them about it.
Frankly, I'm just sick and tired of having to sift through all this bullshit to see what people wrote about the entries - something I used to enjoy.

Shouldn't you apply this netiquette to yourself first, rather than burden others with your immediate assumptions? Just because I forget to add a smiley face or a "haha" as you put it, doesn't immediately make me eligable for a tirade from a complete stranger who simply needs to take out their anger on someone...something you probably wouldn't dare to try in person, as then I am not simply an object to express your frustrations at.
Redehlert, you're not making much sense either, so I'll respond with this: if my first entry seemed passive agressive, it was not, as I just explained. Perhaps misunderstood and hastily written, but not negative. The second response was not passive aggressive, it annoyance at someone who is both judgemental and unwilling to accept that they were wrong.
Forgive the length of responses off topic, but if one has unfair accusations made against them, such as myself, they have to be allowed to prove themselves. Next time, ask if you misunderstood. Then we can save ourselves from creating enemies. Which we have both acquired in each other.

I was torn between Orion9282 and MikeCorriero. I wish there was a way to vote for the top two and have a way to weight the votes.
Mike, I see something new in the background of your piece every time I look at it, and the transition between the creature and its portal was very well done.
In the end, I voted for Orion9282 because I really connected with the concept and liked how the creature used the portal to store acorns. The sketches on the right were also a nice touch.
Also, MichaelMotion, yours still makes me chuckle. I really liked how you took a different path than most the other entries for this topic

Ahh crap...mine was rejected. I'll give it another shot next time.
My vote goes to Orion mainly because it had a reason for opening a portal. Not to meantion a really simple reason! It's just that when we normally associate opening portals we think it's some completely amazing and capable of...blah blah blah. Where as Orions creature needs it for everyday use as if it were nothing special. For the creatures perspective it must be so ordinary it takes it for granted.
I also like Michael Motion's and Complete's entries for the humour factor. I had a good laugh at those ones.
Standing: For a design point of view I loved your entry, but in terms of a portal opener it didn't work for me. Basically under different circumstances I prolly would have chosen yours.

Mabe it's offtop but somebody could you tell me what wrong with my creature?
Wwwweeeeellllll.....
It's not really about what's wrong with it. Peeps might like your critter, it's just that if it comes second in their thoughts; someone else still gets their vote.
Like when peeps say 'ooh! I really liked this and that'- either this or that gets tha vote right? there is no second vote and hey, there are some top notch concepts up there with rad execution; that's where the vote goes.
I know when I get a vote (thanks Irish Jim!) that it is an outside chance b/c there are other better executed images available and cool concepts to contend with 'n' hey, in the submisions thread there where plenty of peeps saying they liked your entry so take the good with the bad!
Constructive criticism wise- the creature in the second (1st posted image) is small compared to the non-creature; gotta have that clear definition (it makes sense and all the wining C.O.W creatures are clearly defined images) not to say it isn't a cool picture, it is. From my voting POV (and it is as different as anyones) the creature isn't the focus of the image, rather the portal and the user come across as the focus.
But HEY! Keep up the effort 'cause it ain't worth ever quiting- repetition is the key to Zen.

I voted for Stephan_R and I agree with what some of the others said about this being whimsical. When I first thought of what a portal opener would be, I thought of some malicious creature totally bent on destruction, so it was nice to see this guy out for a joy ride. It has an Alice in Wonderland/cheshire cat kind of feel to it.

Ceberae – cool concept, I like the idea of creature carrying portal. BTW, if I am not wrong this concept is based on Egyptian myth.
MichaelMotion – This is excellent idea and funny too.
Chuck, mate – In this entry I like more description then painting [usually is quite the other way, hehe]. Creature with ability to rotate around it`s axis to create portal - this is brilliant. Chuck – my suggestion – I really like your creativity, but only thing I am looking for in your works, and can’t find, are details. Sometimes you paint very “simply” paintings – maybe you can try add more details next time.
MIKECORRIERO - As always excellent idea and painting. If this is not a secret Mike….. how much time you spend on this one?
Walnut – When I saw your sketches/thumbnails, I was sure that will be great concept. Now I can say that they were better than final entry. I think you could spend more time on this one. However, this is still interesting concept.
Erilaz – One of the best concept ideas in my opinion.
Standing – Cool concept.
Orion9282 – Idea of creature, which is carring, his own larder [portal] is cool, but I finally realize that your entry has one weak point. Your creature look almost exactly like a funny Triceratops. There is nothing wrong with that, but I think COW gives you total freedom in creation, so next time use it. Create something unique.
Mitze – I like your idea and lights are great to.
Romance – twisted and sick idea, but I love it. Great painting as always and excellent creature design. First when I saw it, I thought this creature is combined with many creatures [few organism in one]. BTW, I like your description.
Digitalfly – I like your entry, especially this picture form creature autopsy
Finally I had to choose between Ceberae, Chuck, Mike nad Romance.
I voted for Romance.
Cheers
Kuba
Ps. Thanks for any comments, crits and votes.
Pps. death jargin, I think you have right, the pose is bit stiff.

Jakkas- I wasn't paying attention but if I had to take an educated guess, I'd say 30 min. - 1 hour for the sketch and maybe 6-8 hours for color I worked on the color here and there in my spare time on random days.
Thx for answer Mike.
First, when I have read it, I was in shock! 30 min!!! WOW! Then, I have read the rest of text...hehe.
I was worried, because I work to slow. However, if you spend on it something abut 8 hours, that’s fine. I am not so bad. I was always depressed, when Chuck, mate have post his picture. After 3 or 4 hours of working, they were looking better then my after 8 hours. But, Chuck is.....:android:

lots of nice art.
but nothing is really an original idea or a fresh concept design that fits the brief.
most of the pieces are a creautre projecting a portal out of their head, butt, etc.
you ppl might as well post something like this and call it a day -
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5672/camelsmall9ke.jpg
ceberae - great light and shade, but it`s a snake with a portal above it.
jonoy - nice colors, but the rendering is not so good, plus it looks too humanoid to be a COW.
MichaelMotion - a very funny piece.
JakkaS - great rendering and colors as always, but its a guy with a large head and 1 eye. not realy a COW.
MIKECORRIERO - good painting. but its an ant. not much of a portal opener idea there.
Stephan_R - hilarious. got a nice Tove Jansen quality to it.
Erilaz - nice snail. with...legs.
Standing - very good painting. don`t really see the portal opening part there.
Orion9282 - good rendering. but it`s a lizard. a lovely one, still- just a lizard.
romance - amazing art work. but not much of an idea.
misledtomisery - looks good. and again - a pirana fish that projects a portal.
so i didn`t vote this time.

erm... whats with you chuck... i have not been here long but you have some serious problems with other people.... although i agreed with you in the venus chow you tantrum was strange.... as if you took it really persoanlly and now this? You say none has stuck to the brief... but the brief was portal opener.. that was it.. no more guidence other than the title... and everybody came up with their own inturpretation.. whats with really condesending attitude to others entrys by saying things like.. nice, but just a lizard.... thats just a really stupid comment mate. why can yours not be described as just a floating star fish?
anyway i guess i am saying.. chill8)
Chuck,mate.
February 26th, 2006, 05:00 AM
condesending?
who`s condesending?
i just call it as i see it.
there`s this "suck-up-b-nice-n-cuddly-don`t-step-on-anybody`s-tows-or-you`re-outta-here" attitude in these activities.
mine could easily be refered to as a "floating starfish" and i`m o.k. with that.
it just happen to be generating a portal instead of projecting it like 80% of the works this round. that`s it.
it`s not better or worse or anything.
it`s just a given fact.
what the fuck is so wrong with saying what i think?
christ....
and I need to "chill"??...

Actually I too am having a difficult time voting. I have the distinct feeling that the assignment has reference to something I don't know about. I mean Ive read a lot and portals appear in many books but I couldn't shake the image in my mind of the white rabbit and the key to the tiny door in Alice and Wonderland. Of course that is a character not a COW.
I thought every one took a different handle on it, some make the portal, some are the portal. and for me the hardest part of COWs is to make a creature that doesn't look like some known terrestrial animal, or a combination. Is there some rule that it can't? that being said here are the notes I took while trying to decide which one to vote for.
Ceberae- beautiful and would make a nice feature in a gothic fantasy
Jakkkas- eep! scary but Im not sure that ripping out a soul actually creates a portal.....or maybe it might
Soul weaver-- looks like one of those elaborate clams, or the husk off a filbert. nice drawing
Mikecorriero- love the feet
Flatliner- I really like its expression of benign humour
Romance Beautifully drawn creature....Im not sure about the portal part
Michael motion and complete 2 ..you entrys made me laugh, complete2 the expression on yours is priceless, placid surprise..
althoguh I liked many of the entries as drawings, I didn't vote either, as I don't feel lik eI truly understand the criteria

JakkaS: Yes you’re right. It’s inspired by a number of myths though, not just one. Homage to Stargate so to speak (the movie not the series) :P
Plate, hwango and everybody else who voted: thanks guys.
Chuck, Mate: Thank you for the crit! Though I don’t agree with your perspective (not regarding my creature in particular), thank you for taking the time and speaking your mind. With your perspective, one might argue that the creature in "Alien" is a grotesque human with two sets of teeth. Everything looks like anything else. Hell, my CD player looks like a pancake! :D I don’t know why you waited so long to mention all of this, since a lot of the entries and WIPs were up way before the deadline (unless there were time constraints for you, then sorry about that).

You're completely right. This site was started for people who are serious about art and its degenerated quickly into a babysitting service for highschool students who don't want to hear the truth. I'm well aware it's an industry. I lay awake at night hoping to whatever higher power might be out there that I'll be skilled enough to make it and do what I truly enjoy. I know that you can't churn out half-assed, unoriginal work and get by in this industry. I'm sorry I even brought it up now, you were completely justified in what you said. I think people were surprised though, they just assumed that because you stated the truth without sugarcoating it that you were being unecessarilly cruel. Keep on telling it like it is man, it was me who lost sight on what was important not you.

There is nothing wrong in my eyes with saying out loud what you think is good or bad...that's why COW is working so well and is so popular. I also don't want ass-patting and if you look back to some past rounds especially the first ones around 1-15 there were a LOT of crits and people enjoyed giving and getting help...somehow COW set an own standard for this kind of activities and community...
I think of Matt Dixon, arteric and all the other guys who made mass-crits where EVERY piece got some crits. It was a great help.
So i think it's good, when you tell what you think, because it opens eyes.
The problem was the way you did, some people didn't like - as i said i am pretty free of pain regarding this...but maybe we can try to add some of the crit posts with individual critiques maybe to every entry or some like in the past.
I was kinda busy the last weeks, that's why i didn't enter the last rounds, but when i find some time i will try to introduce the crit part more, because that's what all of us are expecting when posting art here
Of course i love to get some sweet words from other people, but only sugar ruins the teeth...we need some proteins, vitamines and all this stuff which strenghtens your organism. :)
Chuck,mate.
February 27th, 2006, 05:57 AM

i do apologize if i offended anyone.
my intentions were good, and there wasn`t any personal agendas in mind.
(which is something that unfortunately exists here: "you vote for me - i vote for you.." "you said nice things about my work, i`ll say nice things about yours...." etc.)
i guess i could have said things sugar coated so people`s feelings won`t get hurt. again - i apologize.
but i can`t see how these activities make any difference for my works.
not any more.
(it took MIKECORRIERO me criting HIS work to poop all over mine for example...which was professionalism at its best. way to go mikey!.)

dham chuck.... i started an avalance...
when i called you on what you said, by no means was i in favour of dick sucking.. as you so elegently put it. i totally agree with you in that we should all critique each other very strongly. i myself am trying to improve and often disregars anything good said.. i want to hear whats wrong... but what made me first call you on your so called crits was the way you said things.... it wasn't trying to be constuctive.. just abusive.. and you no full well that out of your frustration you went for the jugular... and thats neither wanted or appreciated....
put simply it;s not what you say but the way you say it....
all that said it would be a shame for you to go as i enjoy your artwork and would like to see alot more from you here....

Chuck, i don't know why you say you're out...i mean when you have no time or just don't have fun to enter it's ok, but it can't be that you want to be out, just because someone said you are offending...
Argue, discuss and the thing will be ok...over the net it's hard to tell what you really think...you know if i would have been out after such situations, there were no more COW and i wouldn't participate in the community at all...
Try to take things easy and change em if you don't like it...you could help to bring back the crit posts as i planned to do, because everyone in COW especially the regulars appreciate this kind of posts, they posted many of them themselves before...it's just got lost the last times...
So if we want to have a nice playground, where we can play in joy and actually learn something and help others, we have to work on it...taking your toys and leaving is not the best way doing this.
COW works only if the community works.
Chuck,mate.

Fozzy-Fozz (and anyone else that give a damn)-
listen,
there was a time the activities were the reason i got up in the morning and went to work. (seriously. i don`t have internet on my comp` at home, so i make all my posting from work. and designing stupid boring kid stuff for TV commercials 8 hrs a day isn`t reason enough, beilive me..)
gradualy i noticed the inner politics and agendas and the way things were done around here. and more and more it just seemed like something i don`t want to be a part of. i like the guys here, i really do.
all kidding and all things said aside.
most of us here aren`t pros. and we participate on our own good will and free time. but something is seriously rotten in the way people act and react to one another, on "who`s my buddy" and "who`d be a good person to suck up to" basis. it`s somewhat sickning.
so i`m taking my toys and go play somewhere else.
i still post all sort of stuff at the "It`s finally finished" thread.
(not that it`s much better there, but this is a whole different story..)
i just can`t put any more time , energy and enthusiasm into these activities any more. it`s just not worth it.

I don’t know why you are complaining Chuck. Quite a lot of your “crits” in “IT'S FINALLY FINISHED!!” section, is like: “wow DUDE, it’s AWSOME, post MORE!”…..
I can only say for my self….I usually writes something like: “I like it…..”, “It’s cool…”, because my English suck and I don’t have time, for sitting with dictionary and writing everything what I think. Maybe when I learn more and I will write more easily then my comment and critics will be longer. However, I want to say to somebody that i like his/her work. That’s all.
Be nice guy and give as an example and next time write something more like: “JakkaS - great rendering and colors as always, but its a guy with a large head and 1 eye. not really a COW.” – BTW, I know it’s not a COW. It is obvious! Usually COWs have horns, hoofs and they gives milk.

Hmmmm, I don’t want to defend Mike, but I think this is the way he work. He looks for inspiration, some reference and he change or add something to create something new. We always refer to example from real life. If not in straight way we do this subconsciously, I think.

Chuck---as a neophyte here myself. It would be sad to see a person of your stature leave. perhaps it isn't favoritism that effects the voting but application of different values. You seem to come from a very professional point of view where the standards are weighted towards highly finished work, adhereing to the the brief in every aspect. Others may be looking in terms of artistic presentation and applying a different set of criteria . One of the most fascinating aspects of this entire site is that the Artists are incredibly widespread and broadbased in background and training.
Some peoples opionions hold more weight than others, a status that they have gained through skill and experience. Your critiques carry a lot of weight which is why people react so strongly when you think so poorly of everyone's work. They are valid and valuable. which is why I, for one, would hate to see you leave the community.
In my own defense. I don't feel qualified to say much about others work, as I come from a theater and Costume background and often feel like I am thinking of these works in an entirly different frame of reference than the rest.

After a lot of thinking, I ended up with Orion. The concept, together with the really wonderful image, went just right into my heart. That it's a creature using it for its own purpose, but of course then used by others, was just classy.
Runners up was Romance, Ceberae, JakkaS and Standing.
Mike, were you influenced by China Mièvilles Perdido Street Station? Really nice and clean concept on you too. :)
Stephan_R and Michael Motion, the two of you should get some extra price for humour. I really dig the whole idea behind both of them, and nicely put down too. Stephan_R's is ending up as bg at my work computer, that way I can pretend I'm there with that fellow when I really need to. ;)

hmmm, where to start.
No more ass-patting. I can honestly admit I've done this in the past, but will refrain from doing so from now on. These forums are a place to learn, teach and have fun, all of which can be obtained from C&C. Ass-pats, unfortunately, only give us a mild taste of psuedo-success and dirty hands.
I feel alot of people around the forums, new and veteran, don't know, or have forgotten how to give proper critiques.
The following is how I view critiques and could be considered possible ground rules for going about a critique. Please, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or am missing something (which I certainly am). :)
Critiques are:
To help your fellow artists understand what's working and what isn't in there design, technique, etc.
Helping others spot mistakes a mile away. The better you get a spotting problems in anothers work, the more chance you'll notice it in your own.
About delivering different ideas to other artists that he or she may have not thought of or overlooked, in order to boost creativity and the mental library.
About treating everyone equally.
Critiques aren't:
An opportunity to slam someone you don't like, understand, or don't know. After all, the critique is about the art, not the person who painted it.
Meant to be vague (ie. "...not much of an idea.") Tell the artist why the idea/topic is unsuccessful or successful, and suggest ideas on how to improve.
To be taken as offense or the end of the world. Leave the pride or box of tissues at home. If someone notices a glaring mistake or inconsistancy, suck it up and fix it, it will only help you the end.
Ass-pats. Like the box of tissues, leave the 'Way To Go" mentality at home.
As far as people 'leaving' the weeklies. Let them, it's their issue. I don't care who leaves or who stays. Doesn't affect me in anyway, might just mean one less vague critique and another entry to look at, which in the end ,might make it easier to pick an entry to vote for.
As far as my previous post about arguing... I agree, sure it happens, and it doesn't always hurt to have it around, but when it gets to a point when people are, or close to, spitting out vulgarities at each other, then it isn't constructive anymore, but personal.
Foz, I wasn't saying you were being a bad mod, (you do a helluva a job around here picking up after us kids, it's mucho appreciated), I was just making some recommendations to make the weeklies more constructive and reduce the slam sessions.
Oh, and I think that whole banana-ear look is working for you, it'll only be a matter of time before everybodies doin' it... can you say Macarena.

While I haven't been a member for that long, I did lurk for a year n more and I noticed exactly what chuck is on about with the politics and back-patting.
In the end I decided to suck in a deep breath, hope that their was a core community beyond the 'back-patters', join and go 'online' to post artwork.
Yay...
Chuck has, imo, seen it how it it. How he said it and expresses his pov is for the beholder to eye, but really, I have seen a lot of good art, shit art and mediocre art on this site in all varying stages of skill and ability.
There is alot of arse-pandering and politic- people vote for their favourite art based on the artist/rendering more than on concept; fozzy pointed it out at about 30% concept to 70% favouritism and that is what it is.
My advice; Deal with it. It ain't going to change.
This is democracy.
(and I thought my rendering was pretty crap; chuck had the gravity to say it, re-affermating how I felt, so no hard kudos from here)
Points at Romance post above
WERD up, if only peeps would memorize this kind of ideal for critiques.

I have read some post again and I feel like I won, because some people voted for me, not for ma work. Its bit frustrating. I don’t know if anyone have in mind me, but this make me feel like ass.
I think, the best what I can do, is to follow the leads written by Romance and just paint as I did before.
Cheers

@jakkas-
I don't mean offence to you so don't go feeling like an ass.
You have a wonderful style of painting (that is an inspiration to me) and I know that when I have voted for you it wasn't just about your style (as a polished final is always part of the decision), it is because I have felt that the concept was the best and rendered well enough (by that I mean really well!) to be of a quality that I would appreciate as a Professional.

Regarding the winner of this round, i have the feeling that there is a relation to Orion's little mistake, hehe...like not voting for him, but that's not important at the moment...because it's not about winning.....it's about DEVASTATING hahahaha...shut up.

fozzy pointed it out at about 30% concept to 70% favouritism and that is what it is.
Actually, fozzy speculated that it's 30% concept and 70% "ooh, pretty!" (back in the voting thread for Huge Dog Endboss - http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=61495 )
Favoritism could also skew the results, though, as could "So-and-so pisses me off, I'm not going to vote for his critter!" There's nothing you can do to make your vote matter more, so my advice would be to make your post explaining your vote really count - put in as much constructive criticism as you have the time to give, and hope others do the same.

Favoritism could also certainly skew the results, though.
Sooo... we should vote for the best concept, or the best piece?
Cause there are good concepts with mediocre drawings; and mediocre concepts with good drawings.

I come here because the talent in the forum is incredible. Probably the most exciting place to compete on a weekly basis for 2D artists. I don't care that I lost (JakkaS' originality trumps mine anyways) but I would hope that I don't carry this negative association/reputation forever because of one mistake.
I felt I had apologized and cleared up the confusion, but it would seem that it won't be forgotten or forgiven. I'll apologize again (sorry to everyone).
If there's more that I can do to clear this up, please, tell me.

just vote for the one, which is best done in your eyes, regarding topic, concept, design, art etc...
I don't know if there are people who vote for some members because of personal relation or whatever...i know that it happened a few times, especially by members voting for their colleague at work.
That's something which is not pretty, but well, i can understand it...
So under the line there might be sometimes pieces which didn't win though they deserved it, but we have to admit that on each round there is a winner which would be under the top 3 anyway...so it's not like a crappy entry takes the crown because of favoritism...
I just wish that we will care more about the helping and giving c&c to each other, especially from the participants of every round, because they expect some c&c, so they have to give when they want to achieve...

Well, it's concept art, it should be 50/50.
Though, I'm pretty sure some peoples barely read the concept and see the 'Oh my freakin god, this thing is absolutely perfect/crazy/insane/tralala!', which is a common housecat with a different color, and vote for it.
I think that's why I stopped postings stuff here, other than my damned lack of motivation, after my very first entry on CoW.
Anyway, I returned to have competition, make my will stable, try to make complete pieces once and for all. The vote part might get ignored though, simply cause of the eroned attitude for voting, well, how I saw it so far anyway.
Thinking about giving crits too, but my english is too horrible, like JaKKaS. I might scare peoples off with too much comments.

the very idea that you who are not native english speakers are in here slashing around with the rest of us is astounding and amazing, even if your art sucked, (quite the contrary your art is some of the very best and speaks for itself) the fact that you are brave enough to jump in here and try to conmunicate with us one-language idiots (im speaking for myself here) is worth praisee in and of itself.
goddess forbid I should try to comunicate in french or polish or russian or any of the other beautiful languages you all speak and think everyday. I for one will never ever ever correct your grammar or anything..
we all speak the language of art.
thanks...

There is a science to drawoffs I have seen it on other boards as well
If you’re a popular participant add 5% to your votes
If you are a popular female participant add 10%
If you are a popular female and good looking add 15%
If the character you do is cartoony 10%
If you do a funny entry 12%
If you do an atmospheric piece lots of darks even do it might not be relevant +15%
If you do a female’s character big breast add 20%
If your piece is original add 2%
And finally +30 if your name is mentioned in ‘I voted for xxxxx’ in the first post and add an extra 5% for every post that mentions your name afterwards advertising works.
Minus %
-10 for a newbie
-20 if you won the round before
-15 if you partipate all the time over exposure
-10 if you don’t reply on the board
-20 if you are too original (people like original work but not too original)
-15 if you are ginger
all of the above I am taking the piss on, ok maybe a few points i believe.

chuck...dude.
yeah, there are a few people here that vote for certain people just because they're sucking up to them or they are their friend.
but not EVERYONE here does that.
besides, even if everyone did do that, i'd use it as motivation to get better, to make your art so fucking good that it forces those people to see your work and go, "damn, i was gonna vote for my best friend, but chuckmates piece blows him outta the watter"
just like cheaters at video games, it makes it more challenging when you play against them.
my motto:
1. is it a matter of life and death?
no
then dont worry about it.
well what if it is?
2. well if it is a matter of life and death, what can you do about it?
nothing.
then dont worry about it.
