View Full Version : Chow 17 - VOTING: Venus On The Half Shell, Revisited

Venus On The Half Shell, Revisited
We need a revision of Botticelli's Venus (the other characters are not needed). It needs to be contemporary, but not trashy. Venus, for this illustration, needs to capture the character of love, beauty, and the strength of womanhood. Class is the word of the day. It needs to be elegant, slightly, but not overtly, erotic for the Valentine week (yeah, it's slightly late, so make it special!). The clam shell is imperative to the character illustration. Ideally, the finished image will in some way be reminiscent of Botticelli's piece, while at the same time presenting womanhood, beauty and love in a fresh, contemporary light. Keep it original and creative.

In making your vote, please consider not only technical skill, but also which piece best matches the description.

i hope it's ok the way i set it up...just referred to Oregano's poll threads before...i think it's ok not to take the concepts? Because i do it in COW but didnt see it in the past ChOWs....i am not watching this activity so i tried to base on the last 2-3 threads...
I didn't take the entries which stated they were wips...
Hope it's ok...
There will be a short break until Saturday 25th February, then ChOW will continue within the campaign...meaning there will be a topic which is linked to the other weekly activities....one week after this ChOW will continue as usual...i think we will find a new mod for this obviously popular baby ;)
Have fun!

argh, close tie between poshspice and toshi666,but in the end i went for posh's afterall. the sexyness is just...
well, and toshi,i liked the sketch much better. the colours in the final version distract too much from the brilliant lines and am i right that you changed her face?
other favs:
mybutterflyiris -beautiful execution.
rustylynn -very cool concept.
trevor -but more because of the squid.

Tough choice..
I'd say this goes between butterflyiris, and Djehuti, which brings out the beauty of the female sex, and the ugly side of human nature. All the entries were commendable, everyone.
butter - Earthly light colors, I can feel melted stone and cream swirling around in her stomach - which is kind of puffy around the vagina area. I don't know if you meant for her to be pregnant. The face is the best here. A blend of masculine & feminine, black and white - opposites like that.
Djehuti - That's powerful. You didn't hesitate to stray off the given topic and hit it even harder.. I'm voting for you.
Both of you guys, Keep doing you.

I just wanted to step in and say
rustylynn - seriously the coolest and most clever idea I've ever seen. Is that your idea? High fives, if so! It doesn't follow the actual character description too well, but I just wanted to give my complements.
Poshspice and masque - also very cool concepts. I think they fit the contemporary description really well, and I love the ideas you came up with to fit the shell into the art. Very brilliant!
Really cool entries all around. Sorry I missed another great ChOW!

Masque got my vote. Nice render mate and refreshing take on the subject.
Rustylyn:: I agree with Magicgoo. Great idea!
Chuck,mate:: I like the concept.
Toshi666:: Great job on the background, sea and shell. The only qualm I have is the lighting(i'm no expert either) is a bit off. If the sun is behind her like the lighting indicates, then she would be almost a siloutte.
Tyranx:: Great job with the skin tones.
I suppose mine could have used more contrast and bit more detail with the cloth and the hair color is a bit off. I wanted to keep the general colors and scene the same, much because I believe that is what made the original such an icon. I chose the pose because I believe it displays modern sensuality without being too revealing. Judging by the current trend, it seems I missed the mark yet again. Well, live and learn and proggression is inevitable. Maybe next round.
If anyone copuld spare the time, crits are definitely welcome. Everyoine of these is a learning experience.

magicgoo, Azrael.... thanks, I'm flattered. The idea just sprang from a quick exercise in association with the words ascension, contemporary, and so forth. It's an exercise a fellow cartoonist shared with me when I first started doing political cartoons. It was a revelation, but kind of disappointing when I found out all those clever analogous references to things outside of politics weren't the result of some supernatural genius.
I'm partial to masque's and vampirehungerstrike's.

argh, tough one, rustylynn's is a greaty idea but it looks like it needed a little more work invested to cinch it. I really dig chuck, mate's, Djehuti's and VampireHungerStrike's but I think they're a too off topic to get the vote, so I'm gonna go for masque's becasue it hit all the points in the desc and was really well rendered. Hats off to all who submitted, your skills are certianly kicking my ass.

I voted for Poshspice. I don't like that I keep voting for the same person, but he keeps surprising me!
I do have some big kudos to give to others though.
Masque: Great idea and great execution. It was hard choosing between you and Posh.
Djehuti and VampireHungerStrike: I like the subject matter you've tackled. Although Djehuti's piece is much better in its execution, I really like the optimism in VampireHungerStrike's. And VHS definitely wins the cleverest use of the shell medal.

thanks jakk.
i didn`t vote this time.
though there were alot of gorgeous girls here, non was really a "revision of Botticelli's Venus", but merely just another girl pin-up.
some ideas were in the right direction but somehow didn`t evolve to a well executed well thought-out concepts.
then again - this is only MY opinion and it`s as good as any other`s.
really awesome round guys.

yeah agree with chuck mate ( love love love your entry by the way ias that painter? or ps?, but not to thebrief being a little girl ).. but then this was a tough subject...
not sure about the iraq themed ones.. interestign but doesnt quite do it for me.. just my opinion.
depleted is amazing art but not close to the brief at all i find...
for me it was a toss up between posh spice, beelow and masque.. but masque got my vote being closer to the brief as i inturpreted it and the best executed piece.
well done all!:teeth:

Azrael: Very pretty.
Matias: Liked your Venus very much but with her legs angled the way they are, she seems about to fall over on her side.
mybutterflyiris: Beautiful painting. At first glance, I wasn’t sure if your Venus was floating above the base of the shell or if she was standing on the side of it. I take it she’s floating because of the vertical positioning of her feet...but I do find it ambiguous enough to be distracting.
Masque - Gorgeous and beautifully rendered. You got my vote.

mybutterflyiris did it for me, since it seemed the closest to the brief of class, elegence, beauty, strength with a touch of the erotic. I liked poshspice and masque interpretations as well, but to me they didn't suggest 'class' so much :teeth: .

I voted for Djehuti becuase it was a wonderful modern interpretation of Venus. The only down side I have with his piece is that there isn't a shell in the picture.
Masque was 2nd. :)
Oh and I loved Trevors piece, but I didn't feel it was contemporary enough. It feels to much like fantasy to me and it could be from any era.

I think I will vote for, chuck mate, I am going 4 orignality! Really tough theme for me without trying to make it to trashy and was trying to limit my color pallet. Really great for me though to experiment! with colors, All were nice, Micheal Motion, posh, Masque, Toshi, DepleteD, were my favs.
rustylynn, was really on to something though, thoughtful and creative!:yayca:

Yes, Bouguereau, it's nice to see him getting some students. As an aside, I always loathed the Botticelli Venus. To me, it represents one of the unsexiest women in all of art history. In Bouguereau's Birth of Venus, the figure has a certain arrogance about her, befitting a goddess. In her vanity, she combs her hair, seemingly ignoring the adoring mob that surrounds her. Cupid himself, the god of love even seems to be helpless in her presence. Some poor dolphin has beached itself in awe for chrissake's. Dawn, also called Aurora is certainly pretty, but Bouguereau didn't have Venus in mind when he did it. Dawn has the innocence and simple femininity of many of his young women, adoring a piece of nature outside of herself, unlike Venus, who adores only herself and her lovers, (who she discards as quickly as a bouquet of flowers). In the Botticelli piece, one can see it is not the fault of the artist, per se, that it falls short of character, but the constrictions of the era in which it was painted, really. A helpless young and fertile thing buffeted about by a masculine figure while a handmaid rushes to cover her up in modesty, a mockery of the entire concept of Venus. In Bouguereau's, by contrast, Venus revels in her nudity, and no one seems to be trying to cover her up, they're all naked too!
I can't imagine Venus, from the myths involving her, being anything but a precocious, self-assured spoiled all-powerful brat princess from the moment she was born, and that's what Bouguereau's Venus portrays. Venus, in her day-to-day affairs, was a woman who got everything she wanted, no questions asked, or she had terrible tantrums. I think that Bouguereau had a great way of capturing Venus as a character. VHS's piece has that same smug, self assured look, I think it's great.
So who wants to go skinnydipping?

Wow. Ok... Thanks guys for all the votes and c&c especially. I really didn't expect that. Yeah, I do like Bouguereau and he is one of my influences along with alphonse Mucha .
Some comments:
Masque: my vote goes to you. I think you really captured the character description and I love everything about it. Rock on! :teeth:
Trevor: I really love yours. I really hope you do take the time to make this truelly finished and polished.
Tyranx: Yours is wonderfully rendered... sooo... what is she looking at over there anyways?... :P
Djehuti: VERy interresting take. You created a nice mood.
Vampire Hunger Strike: Very creative and all too true. A little crit however: too me your colors look a bit too saturated and the perspective of the background doesn't quite match the characters.

Fozz: please remove my entry since I didn't complete mine. I'm not going to make an excuse but let's just say I had a fun weekend.
My vote is for Poshspice since I think the "Birth of Venus" part is more about realizing goddess status, rather than actual "birth". The look on her face and make-up application seem to capture the modern equivalent of that in my opinion. Good work!
Chuck,mate.

is it me, or mybutterflyiris venus looks just a TAD like Bouguereau`s aurora?
i dunno..... as a source of inspiration it`s always good to refer to the big classics.
but mybutterflyiris piece looks kinda like a number of great classic paintings combined into one so-so rendered edition. no originality or a (concept) design..sorry.
edit: ho, and it`s in the 1st place.
just saw that.
come on....there are at least 4 piece more worthy up there.

I feel the same as Chuck, Mate. The feet look like Bouguereua's "Evening Mood." And, the rest looks like classic paintings cut and pasted together. It doesn't portray the description well enough, and is not contemporary or an updated take. It's just the same old take on Venus as the old ones.
I wound up voting for the first one by Beelow. I liked that it's a girl with curves and darker skin, and I think her look portrays womanhood perfectly and is contemporary, but still pays homage to the classic style. Her age is appropriate to the description and I love those clouds and colors. Nice work, Beelow!

In terms of creativity I think it stinks. its not contemporary at all, by today's standards she is fat, as for the painting itself, it is mediocre at best.

I voted for mybutterflyiris out of, in lack of a better way to say it, reflex. It is the one looking less plastic of all entries. I don't seriously believe that just because the description says modern, the girl has to look as if she's a bubblegum chewing plastic-fantastic *Pornstar* brat with a fuck-you attitude or whatever (like Posh's - no hard feelings).
Beauty is beauty, and what is being spawned out by the media (and also by the porn/fashion industry) regarding "modern" is bullshit most of the time. A modern goddess doesn't have to represent what is looked upon as modern by us mortals on earth, she's above that.
I almost voted for VampireHunterStrike and Djehuti from originality in concept, but as it has been said - the render is important. I can't argue with the fact that Butter..'s seem like a ripoff. It does, but I don't see the problem with that, as opposed to my views mentioned above.
Anyways, I'm just ranting :-) Good job everyone!

I suspect most people are reading the title of the challenge and voting, without reading the whole brief..... :\definitely agree with this W!L, and unfortunately i think the voting patterns that result tend to reinforce the notion that the brief isn't all that important. that subverts the purpose of the activity to a degree.
Oregano's departure makes this a special case, and no crit intended toward Fozzy at all, but it's the moderator who under normal circumstances should be the hard-as-nails "censor" regarding adherence to the brief -- it may mean a few more ego bruises but in any career involving art, those are part of the job description (as is how you handle them). most voters are like a museum- or gallery-going public, they don't cast themselves in the role of critic or AD, and shouldn't be expected to.
meh, 'nuff soapboxing. been looking at these pics for a couple of days, and a couple stick in my mind as exceptional for one or more reasons after running them through the filter of the brief:
Beelow's is strong, i like the unabashedly voluptuous figure and the fact she's stepping out of that damn' clamshell into her own future, and sort of inviting you to follow (not lead!), if you can keep up. i think the shell & BG could have used more attention, they're a bit too sketchy, but it's not a huge weakness.
rustylynn's concept is very droll and worth an ironic grin -- the pic could use a major crop, though, the central portion is all that's needed and the other figures distract.
poshspice's Venus in Blue Jeans is not only a slick and sophisticated piece of illustration, but also a somewhat wry comment on contemporary attitudes toward the female ideal and how they're molded (warped?) by popular media. may not have been intended that way, but that's what the eye of this beholder sees. only crit is that hiphugger bells were later rather than earlier sixties :P
Brand_X has created a luscious sense of light occupying space and a totally un-self-conscious pose for Venus, in a bold composition reminiscent of Degas. the limited palette of hues is used very capably, creating a great deal of depth based on color temp alone. the figure could use more attention to gender-based anatomy (the hips are very masculine) but it's well-proportioned. everything is perhaps a bit too smoothed, i think seeing more actual strokes would make the pic more interesting.
i put my vote on Beelow, wish i had another for Brand_X.

Firstly, I'd like to say in my defense that I did post wips and asked people if I had completely headed off in the wrong direction. I was quite prepared to do something completely different, but I do agree with you.
This is my first Chow and I think there are much more deserving pieces here than my own. I was shocked at the votes as well.

hey, peeps, chill, 'K? mybutterflyiris -- i don't think it's you or your lovely piece that is causing disgruntlement as much as the reaction to it, and those are very separate issues. i would not want to see your piece taken out of the poll for any reason, if only because it sets a very scary mob-rule precedent. the rest of you folks, try and live with it and maybe express your concerns to the new moderator, where the real responsibility lays.
and m'b'i has a very good point -- express your opinions about relevancy to the brief before the poll is set up, 'cause afterward, we should just live with the decision of the mod and move on, otherwise the whole activity could be crushed under the weight of recriminatory shoulda-beens and how-comes.

February 21st, 2006, 09:34 AM
mybutterflyiris asked me to take down the pic...but i won't...
She or the image is not the problem...not at all...
1. It's the fault of the moderator, who didn't want to reject any pieces because he never watched ChOW really and thus didn't know how the actual mod would judge the entries...yeah, burn down the mod....he is the....hey....wait........mod....mod?....arrrrrrrr rrrghhhh....
2. The voters are the problem either, they vote on first sight without regarding topic or concept....well that's a known issue since the beginnings of COW....so we have to live with it....
....though a few days ago something came to my mind, but it's not easy to do and also not transparent...i thought of counting the votes of the artists who participated double...like participants vote = 2x normal vote...
this would guarantee that the votes which are based on concept, briefing and art will have more weight, taking the results in the right direction...i assume that all participants would judge by regarding the briefing/topic etc...
But as i said the problem is how will you transfer this into practice? entry x will have 20 votes at the end, but entry y with 15 votes would win, because of 6 participants votes...this would confuse the people i guess...

This is pretty depressing, people. Ripping on a finished entry that was taken to the polls just because it's in the lead...
mybutterflyiris is right. His/her image sat in the wip thread for a whole week without much comment by anyone as to whether it fit the brief or not. Even after asking specifically for crits on that. To start bitching about it now is totally unfair. I won't lay the blame on Foz, either, because I don't see anything to blame anyone for. It's a good, solid finished entry. This was a pretty personal topic. I mean, what is love or beauty to one person may not appeal to another.
Chuck, mate, I like your entry but I do not think it represents 'womanhood' in any way, as specified in the brief. Would I begrudge your entry for that if it was in the lead? No.
So can we just stop the whining, everyone?

Critique taken regarding c+c - I really wanted to post a reply on butterfly's piece, but I never did. I'll torture myself later tonight for that.
I still think all participants made a real good effort. Lots of fine women there :)

2medusa, W!L, thank you and i'm flattered, but i have to decline the "nomination." doing it right would just require more time and attention than i can spare at the mo.' i post fairly often here & love participating but i'm also trying to assemble a decent portfolio, design & build a pro-level website, and tutor my daughter (aspiring artist, Dad's so proud) for a few hours each day. plate's full.

I voted for Djehuti.. It echos the composition of the Botticeli while pointing out a sad and sorely modern truth. The work looks finished and the interpretation of "Shell" is creative and unique
I had a hard time with this one as I felt that most of the entries either didnot meet the brief or were not elegant enough to do justice to this image. Some of the best images were "trashy" , some didnot have the "shell" etc.
It seems that we are all pretty good at portraying "Hot chicks" but truly beautiful ones are a mighty challenge. Me?.... I did 12 sketches and threw them all out, so my Kudos to all who had the courage to try

Hey, ho, what the hell is going on in here? I come back and I see cannon balls flying, haha, jk! Yeah, although I agree with chuck-mate, I am not really concerned with getting all the votes, although it is my intention to impress, but sometimes it doesn't go down like that, there are those who vote based on popularity, vote because it is my buddy, and there are those that vote based on if the concept sticks to the theme, hell it doesn't matter. The thing that we all should give ourselves a pat on the back for participating, that is what should really matter and use this as a way to build a portfolio or a way to improve our work! I'll Holla!:yayca:

WoW! so many good entries. I think I'm voting for Chuck, mate, really well done. looking at it I feel like there is almost a whole story that should go along with it, so cool! Good expression too.

K so I guess no one wanted to talk about Bouguereau's Venus, then?why not bring it up in the Lounge -- might get more participants, and it's a bit OT here. i think the back & forth about "beauty, love, elegant, erotic, trashy" and other buzzwords from the brief would be interesting, 'cause it's pretty obvious opinions are all over the map.

hi, Foz. i just read through the ChOW discussion thread -- no stars as yet 'cause Oregano didn't have admin privileges and couldn't "award" them, and the winner's gallery is the "Our Queen and her Court" thread -- but it seriously needs an update, it's backed up to last November (Mortimer).

ah ok thanx...so it's done :)
I think the "Our Queen and her Court" thread will be updated by whoever will moderate ChOW for the future...maybe i will update the thread when i have some time and feel bored ;)

Just to inform you...it seems that Oblio will take over the ChOW after the campaign...so we have a new mod and ChOW hopefully will continue successfully as it did before...

many thanks Oblio. Muchas Gracias for stepping up to the plate and we will try not to be our usual cantankerous selves for at least a little while......best behaviour....from me at least. I can't speak for the rest of these rampant individuals (jk).
