hey man, great work you got goin here. i really like the comic pages. .. the strong contrast really helps with the mood. ..ever thought of going back in with a white gell pen in places (just a thought)? your pen work is nice as well, the two older men being my favorite. in your pen and ink sketches, i think the super bold ink outline detracts from you nice and subtle line quality. ...have you tried using a dry brush ink technique? that might lend well to your pen sketches. as far as your pencil sketches go, it looks like you are forcing the pencil in some of the rendering.. . .just let it flow. also, try not to retrace your lines. .. your line quality gets lost when you put a dark stroke over your previous lines. .. .try to go a little darker right off the bat, but still keep the sensitivity of the stroke. anyway, great work man, im excited to see more.
ps - i saw a couple of your paintings in bob fosters room (guy with a hat and a bald black guy). . .theyre lookin pretty good.. . .DO MORE.

the pen sketches are real nice.. .i can tell that you are really seeing your subject. it looks like you are still fighting with the pencil, but youll get it. i want to see more faces in your work. ..it looks like, for the most part.. you just fudge it in real quick. the painting looks pretty good, but i think you are too timid with your application of color and value. i am dying to see a hot highlight on his nose. also, the structure of his jaw is almost nonexistant. under the cheaks, i see almost no influence of muscle or bone. definitely not a bad painting, though.
also, gary is leet.

hey metal, thanks for the honest crit- you brought up a lot of points about the portrait that I was struggling with, I think I was relying a little heavily on the ref and not enough on the idea of building forms...thanks for pointing that out, i'll keep these things in mind. and as far as the pencil sketches go, those things are done in less than a minute...so if it looks like i'm struggling, i am :)
thanks again, i'm gonna be calling you and chris tomorrow so we can figure out the details of wed night.

secret agent cotron banks. nice stuff. I can see that you're the one who inspired metaldannywinds to do those pastel pics. hail yea. I like what you're doing, working w/ pen, sticking w/ your original lines to build confidence in your initial strokes. I started drawing like that the last couple days of the workshop, inspired by the coro. I'm sure you heard him, but he also suggested working small. I find that my proportions, and hence my gestures too, are better when I work smaller. I still really like the 'fewd' drawing of dannywinds w/ the single line for his nose and mouth. Rock it H.O.T. style, richmond VA.

cotron - really good stuff all around! I saw most of it in person and that makes it even that much cooler!!!
your pen work really is stellar - you capture things really quickly but you have a good sense of the scene. some of your quick sketches end up having a really nice composition - I'd love to see what happens if you really concentrate on layout, because you seem to have a good sense of it. Sometimes when I "try" it just takes the life out of it cuz I go all overkill.
you were sooo way cool to hang with!
Oh, and heather mentioned that she'd like to get an image of the sketch you did of me if you've still got it.
Oh, and I meant to say earler... "POOP!"

DUDE!
That frickin rocks! That's one of the best things I've seen on these threads in a while, and I ain't lyin....it's right up my alley!
Is this oil or digital or something else? Mixed media, I suppose? Reminds me somewhat of the artwork inside NIN's the downward spiral album, albiet less abstract, which is good. Nice nice nice. What were the requirements of the project?
I'd love a big scan or shot of this for my wallpaper at work to scare all the corporate goons I have to deal with each day!
I'm gonna go thru the rest of the day grinnin and thinkin about how awesome this is.

codytron - i really like this last piece. You dont post enough finished work, in my opinion. When you do, though its really fun to look at.
Your quick gestures are awesome to look at too, though. Ever seen the video for Zero 7 - Destiny? They have a similar animated looseness feel to them - almost like the lines are moving. really cool.
Anyways, you are definitely one ofthe funniest and coolest people i met in Austin. I've never seen someone say so many homoerotic things but still not come off as gay :)

cody! nice work bro. that painting looks good. ..im still very new at painting (ive only done one, and that was yesterday), but i have a couple of crits. first, anatomyically, there should be a highlight on his right pectoral. ..not a very pronounced highlight, but there should be one. also, id like to see some highlights put on the stitches. the ribs are off, but they dont really bother me. ..they just look abstracted. i wanna see this painting in person dammit. .. then i will give you a better crit and more praise.
the pen work is definitely improving.. . .i really like how youre starting to render some of them.. .definitely good for you. i love the picture with the 3 people sitting (the 3rd image). .. very nicely done. this update makes me want to lifedraw. .. .time for another self portrait.
btw, OILS FUCKING OWN! me and chris are each about to start a 20 x 30" painting. ..may as well jump right into it. ..should be a very good learning experience. now, i need to find a really good reference...

the way you have the lighting on his shoulder and chest (in the painting you just posted), there would have to be another light source above his head. ..shining only on his shoulder and the top part of his chest. .which is somewhat confusing because those are the only 2 areas that the lightsource is illuminating, and that source seems random and unnecessary because there is another lightsource (the one shining below and onto his torso). anyway, hope this helps some.
ive been painting, but i dont have a digital camera, so i ll have to borrow chriss and then post what ive done so far. ive done one still life painting and im working on a referenced piece of a woman right now

Cotron - this is great stuff, and like I said, the goons at work don't get it. They asked me to put my Naomi Watts wallpaper back. She's hot to look at, but she's also my wallpaper at home - so my work peeps have to deal some NIN inspired fun. If they don't like it, welll..... :machinegu
thanks for posting the sketch of me. the wife got a kick out of seeing it again, and I'd not seen it. One might think my hair wasn't that f'd up - but it really was. ;)
your other work is coming along nicely - the life drawing stuff really paying off. your hatching is nice, and when you try you really seem to "nail" things.
Try take a bit more time with some of your drawings even more often than you are and try to really see - especially with pen work...you may feel stilted sometimes, and it will take time to find the right mix of "free" and "tight" drawing (god knows I haven't found it) but you'll benefit from it, I think.
Keep up the good work!

I just noticed how jacked this composition is.. oh well.
Here's a bunch from the life drawing @ the academy, each in the range of 5-10 secs to about 2-5 minutes a piece...George Pratt's method, which is like bootcamp, but really turns on the intuitive side of drawing.

cody, I'm liking that last batch of figures. I think the first is my favorite. Curved lines make the ladies look sensual. I like that painting with the nails too, but i think the marks are a little soft (if this makes sense) dont be affraid to make some jagged edges, more like you did in the pissing painting. Also the teet (pec) to our left seems like it could be stretched more, since the arm is thrown back, bringing the nipple up.

code, noice updates man ... the fluidity and motion of some of those loose pen sketches remind me of looking at reflections in calm water. lots of fun to look at!
my favorite pages from your recent post have to be the third one from the top and the slice of life in richmond one. I'm digging that composition technique you did (with drawing the boxes around the images) ... its a neat way of bringing a bunch of smaller scribble/studies together into a coherent whole. you should fiddle around with that a bit more, cuz its goin places.
I'm also feelin the drawings of that nerdy dude in the fifth page down and that portrait of barry. It looks like youve been bustin out the brush pen a lot more recently (unless its just ink and brush) - i like it a lot. what kind are you using?
and did i mention that painting is TOIGHT!! great composition. though something about his left shoulder dont seem right - right now his left arm looks a bit short but i think that might change once you flesh out and define his left shoulder area more. ever read stephen king's dark tower books? the dude reminds me a bit of a character named "the gunslinger"...
and i gotta say that the loose coloring technique you used in your speed paint really goes well with your line style. and the colors complementary colors work well too. comp colors never hurt noone, na'mean? (looks like someone <3's eeeeriiikaaaa..... heheh)
and finally - i've said this before but im'a say it again - lets see more "finished" pieces - i.e. pieces you spent more than an hour on!

Cotron:a!: - man, I was gone for a bit and while I was out you were doing some amazing stuff. Maybe I should leave more often. :)
I think your semi-sequential works are interesting (especially Erika), but the real bang is in your single-shot portraits. Barry, the geeky kid, slice of life in richmond, and of course this speedpaint bit - all of them are really nice.
you're getting good with basic anatomy and are able to play around with it some, accentuating characteristics of your subjects. I'd continue trying to maintain that creative edge while focusing on value (get more mid tones in the pen work) and linear qualities, especially having the lines define the forms a bit more.
the bold brush or brush pen strokes really kick ass. you use them well!
Keep up the good work, and post some more of it!

Wootwoot, update.
good stuff cody. the life gestures are great, you're working hard on nailing the lines down the first time. Something I need to do more.
I never painted model with gouache, maybe tomorrow night. From the couple still lifes I've done with gouache, I feel like its easier to lay the paint down on the dry side. It dries quicker, and your next layer doesn't pick up the bottom layer as fast. If you want to pickup the bottom layer and mix the colors on the paper, just make the brusher a little on the wet side. if the paint runs down the palette slowly, its on the wet side, if it doesn't run, its about right. If it runs down really fast, its too thin. At least that's what I've been feeling like. I could be way wrong.
the white of the page is probably skewing the overall value range on the gouache painting also.
anyway I'm blabbering. Keep on updating.

I'm pretty sloppy on the longer stuff too, but I've been trying to find a balance in my gestures/refined line drawings. I'll try some longer pose stuff in ink, since you suggested it. thanks bud!

looking good...great line work in that first one
for the value studies i might recommend trying a few where you use as little line as possible...sticking just to value variation to differentiate the forms. it can be good to have areas where you dont need line to show the form...just a change in value. if you try out some where its just value itll help you find a good middle ground of using both value and line in the future
keep it up man

That painting is looking good too but the hand looks fishy. I'm not reading the fold in the pads on the pinky (since it's curled) and it looks a little large (but i'm not looking at the model/reference). I likes the treatment of the head and cheek structure, nice colors too.

that cd back is incredible man, seriously, perfect style and look to it.
I also really really like that last model page, the tonal one.. you really captured the gesture of that pose on the left.
Those two stand out the most for me this batch.
I'm not digging the red-buttocks too much... looks like it could have been a fairly big drawing. I heard an interesting trick a while back you might get a kick out of; draw with vine charcoal and draw the entire pose in less than a minute.. shorter/quicker the better. Then, since it's vine, take some napkins and wipe it all off, leaving a ghost of the image. Then, try drawing the image on top of that with whatever your medium is.
I've heard it helps you decided which marks you actually think about, which ones are instinctive, which ones do something, which ones don't and all that jazz... Haven't done that trick in years..but it helped me a lot way back when... hurm... maybe I should go back and give it a try myself..
Anyway, excellent work overall, and thanks for giving them differing file names this time!! Keep it coming, dude!

wow cody, excellent couple of pages you've got there.. I never did get to see what it was you were doodling; I was too busy eatin' I guess, but it came out nice looking; in particular that one quick sketch of the guy and his kids at the cashier.
The state fair page looks exceptional as well.
By the way, what did you think of shaun of the dead... did you see what game they were always playing?

your a definite influence on line work for me cody, i love the contours and you seem to have a great confindence in each line u make. your color work, needs to push its values more, crayons are a cute touch but you got the drawings better with a thinner line. your rendering is getting very good, you got nice contrasts in there

I 'm diggint this new batch of digital stuff too, it's got a lot of rawness behind it, a true cotron signature, which I like.
Have you have thought about incorporating pattern into anything? Like pattern to achieve a "noise" or a "detail" to certain areas? to pop out or shoot certain areas back, kinda like you do with the speckle paint/toothbrush spray in certain pieces?
Just curious, I can kinda see you having fun with it.
Anyway, goodstuff dude, how's eng 200?
