nice sketches, as always. i have to give you a lot of props for your drawing process. sometimes i sit down at lunch and wonder what is going on in the head of cody, and that is when you put your palm in you shirt and a loud poot pops out of your pit.
i have been looking at your color work lately and thinking about your comments on using saturation and working on the mood of a piece by thinking of colors being associated with temperatures. who knew so much info was in your armpit?

codys's armpits are greeaaaat. Even I started laughing at them around day 4 or 5 of austin... and you know me... I'm the antithesis of fart.
Nice stuff cody... sorry for the compulsive web littering... i just couldn't help myself... I'll try and keep it under check next time.
Of this batch, I like the monstery thing with not legs. It'd be nice to see some more stuff like that architectural/environment page a few posts back, that stuff was really a neat direction.

Your lighting in all of the paintings is loooking REALLY nice, creating some vivid exciting moments, and its also really helping to pop the volume of the characters. The line work of your sketchbook drawings is looking great too. its all very elegant and the line quality is really pushing it. i like your style and i'm curious to see some full blown and descriptive concepts.
nice work

I like the stylized look to all of your drawings/paintings. The anatomy in most of them looks pretty accurate, except for some of the heads in your sketches. I'd like to see a little less saturated colors in those paintings, though (just because the less saturated colors tend to look a little more realistic). Other than that, great job. ;)
cotron
December 10th, 2004, 02:25 AM
Odds-thanks man, anatomy's one of those things that's great to know, but I'm not too worried about everything being perfect...i think mood and gesture are just as important. but yeah, I gotta study more of dem body parts!

way to page it up with pages of goods cody.
hmmm... I think the first version works better too. The second might if his hands were making the claw shape, like they're strained?
No ripping off of anyone that I know, I worry about that sometimes too but I think that when you actually worry about it it's never going to happen. Some folks do set out to mimic a style or technique, I think that's cool if your experimenting and using it as a point of departure, but don't make funds from it.
Anyways, none of that going on here. Very unique stuff - I like it!

I've been pretty strapped for time because of my move and I might not have time to comment on it all if it doesn't get up pretty soon so thanks for competing with me, can't wait to see your piece. Man, I love your pen drawings. I tried to do some recently and failed so badly. lol It frustrated the heck outta me. I can't get that economy of line that you seem to. Any pointers? Maybe I'll just try some more and poste 'em. Then you might be able to help me out a bit more.
But seriously. Lovin' the update. It's always cool when you can sort of document a trip or something that has happened by drawings in your sketchbook. It really is like a journal! :confident Sometimes I hate to show some of this stuff to certain people. I feel like there are some things in there where you're leavin' yourself open, y'know? I always find myself trying to explain the reasoning behind things, etc. when people are lookin' through my stuff. lol Welp, thanks again for the inspriation. And thanks for the post on my thread. I'll hit that up with a reply, hopefully tonight.

joe- haha the downsyndrome one was when we were in philly, i was all amped up on coffee... and the drawing went baaad, thus the quote... thanks for the sentiments man, I sure am glad to be done.
zebz- The trick to pen stuff, i've found, is to do a LOT of it, and to try not to correct yourself as you go. it's better to start drawing another person than noodling the same one, because you're only second guessing yourself when youre correcting. Tend to think about how things (like gesture/facial features etc.) relate to eachother before you put the pen down, you get more understanding that way. That's the beauty of indelible ink, you have to learn confidence and to commit to what you're doing. Try to be quick about your drawings, tends to make you looser and less concerned with getting it "right". Plus, if youre drawing people out and about, they tend to move real soon! All of the faces I drew today, for example, took maybe a minute or two, then I did the hatching stuff after I got the shapes down. Last thing- this helps too, is to have different size pen nibs, experiment and see what works best for you, put more than one size in a drawing, or use brush pen to get dynamic lines, I use brush for outlines and shadow a lot. just play around with it as much as you can. Shit man I just wrote a novel, hope that didn't bore you too much :) I love pen sketching, I could talk about it all day.

intern- thanks bud, i spent about 2 hours on the painting so far... my palette was only 3 colors- burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, and permalba white. the idea behind this is to get a warm and cool, and one other to lighten them, and you can basically create the whole range of values and have a very simple play of warm and cool. I'm trying to not make such muddy messes with my oils, this seems to help. I learned it from George Pratt, who was taught this exercise by Jeffrey Jones.... pretty smart fellas.

hot damn, this stuff is H.O.T. that's right, I went there. I kind of disappeared from this site for awhile, and wow, you're stuff looks great. the shirt design looks super cool and these ink drawings are really nice. you totally got your own illustrative style going on. i kind of agree w/ what he'sglue wrote, but the kind of line drawing you do and tight rendering are different beasts. maybe be more conscious and intentional of the direction of your hatch lines, but you seem to be pretty conscious of it already. I saw you responding to someone about different nib pens and brush pens. I take it you don't mean the nib pens that you have to dip and change the nibs for? I've got a pen like that, but I've been wanting a nib pen that I don't have to dip. any suggestions for nib pens and brush pens too? man, I really like your stuff.

December 26th, 2004, 10:48 PM
miguel- i suppose it all depends on what your idea of "rendering" is-to me it's really just showing light and shadow, and that's what I try to get across in my sketches... I don't want to overdo it, either. I usually let paint be my medium for the many different tones. I'm trying to find a happy medium of speed and line control, mainly- and to get cool shapes out of what I'm doing too. Cross hatching is fun, but I really don't like overdoing it. Thanks for the crit, it's always good to hear new avenues of thought.
elboy- what's up man! good to hear from you. i do dabble with different nibs occasionally, there's one called the "G Pen" nib, lots of manga artists use it apparently. It's real nice for pressure sensitive lines. I really like to use those and brushes with sumi ink. Hope you're doin well man, I wanna see some art!
nova- what's up! thanks for the kind words, it's much appreciated. I read you're not gonna be in SF :( your sketches have been lookin awesome lately. And, yeah, I'm surprised I beat Alan too... I'm sure if we face eachother again it'll be a different story, that guy's stuff is awesome!

I would send shoutouts to everyone, but shit! I have a ton! everyone was awesome, and it was great to put a face to all the awesome art on the boards- prostate and bojee especially. Really good to see people from the Austin workshop again, it was a grand ole time. The pros were great, I got really helpful feedback, and got to see the likes of Foster paint... GAHHHHHHHHH. I'm gushing i think, I better post some art.
starting off- bought this cool lil sketchbook when I first got to the city, tried to fill it as much as I could there
the cover-

bought a little watercolor set with everything-

my friend andrea wicklund (http://www.andreawicklund.com) in the top right, who was gracious enough to put us up for a few days before the workshop-

when everyone got together, there was much sketching... including a 30 minute mini thunderdome of a "mechanical buddha"-

diggin the website redesign, dude. the cockroach mural is freakin badassssss. also love the scull icon that firefox now knows your site as. ;)
the stuff you did for ten33 is awesome...i LOVE zombies... checking out blood and ink records now..
as usual, your inks are nice, but up until the last one your colored one was my fave. this last b&w bit really grabs me, though. nice flow around the page, bold but economic lines, and nice use of little bubble-like circles. rock, dude.

Hey, I think your colored pen page turned out great. You have a good color sense and I like the way you handled the background.
If I were to crit anything, I would say to watch your highlights. You can really lead the eye around your piece by the way you place them. Right now, I miss a connection from the top heads in the upper right corner to the heads on the bottom. Maybe just a slight highlight along the arm of the guy on the top would do it. It would lead my eye down to the other heads.
Anyhow, just something to think about.
keep it up!

nice post cody. i liked it when you were drawing it and i definitely like it with the new commentary you put into it. this post was delicious. can i have some more postage?
it was also great working with you. you are one of the coolest people i know in richmond. thanks for letting me borrow the dvd too. i will return it as soon as possible. i can't wait to get away from people who sing and tap dance (without any regards for others) while they are at work. people who do annoying things like that should be sterilized because we don't need their children knocking on our front doors and singing for tricks or treats in the future.

I did this last night for a zombie themed skateboard art show... everyone paints on a skateboard, it's pretty cool. I broke one of my no-no rules, I used black out of the tube on it... it's not the best painting I've ever done, but it was fun nonetheless.

Evren- Well, as far as technical issues go with small lines, it's usually not a big problem, the screens can be burned pretty accurately. But, you're right, on tshirts, you want the image to be readable from a distance.... so boldness and simplistity is more of an aesthetic decision than a technical one.
IanE- thanks for the kind words, makes me feel good to inspire people to go out and draw in public. post what you come up with!

These are some cool drawings. The boldness of the lines of the life drawings makes them standout from some of the other sketches. The ink drawings have a lot of life in them because of the confidence of the strokes and the simple hatching. I really like your style, and you've inspired me to be a little less 'tight' in my own pen work. The illustration for the t-shirt is great. The perfect circles and specs of white in the shadows really elevate it from the quicker sketches on this thread. As for crit: The head of the sledgehammer is at a slightly odd angle and the legs don't quite look right. They are drawn well but the front foot looks a little too close to the viewer and it’s hard to see the direction the back leg is pointing in. Is that a brushpen you used around and on the text? If you can it would be great to see a picture of the finished shirts when they are printed.
