hello there ^^ ,
I'm really interrested in the warhammer40k drawings and how they develop. But
I have just the problem that there's very less material to learn from the internet ( mostly there are pics of the tabletop figures and only a few drawings :( )
I especially like the spacemarines and the imperial army if that rings a bell.
Maybe someone could tell me how to draw warhammer40k style or could tell me if theres a link .

Erm... they're humans, so learn anatomy. Then learn how to draw cloth and armour... there's no easy way. Just observation and practice.

Not a lot more I can offer, I'm afraid.

well,

the world of 40k is dark, gothic, grim, massive in scale, and very dirty. there is the ever present taint of Chaos, not to mention threat of alien invasion constantly thorughout the imperium.

Games Workshop likes things to be heavily ornamented(ive worked on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and this is what they requested). Everything should have some sort of decoration on it. be it skulls, chapter insignias, purity seals, or trophies of battle, the world of 40k is rife with decoration.

the Characters living in this world have seen countless battles, their best friends ripped apart by sickening Slaanesh demons, and entire star systems conquered and assimilated by the Tyranids. this should show in your illustration.

other than that, make sure you get the armor, symbolism, and vehicles correct. if you are planning to submit stuff to games workshop, they are sticklers when it comes to being true to their intellectual properties.

good luck!

Thx guys
I already have completed some drawings from warhammer 40000 but without photoshop or any other program. Moreover I normally do manga style paintings.
But i will drop some of the drawings somewhere in the Forum (even without picture software) :-D

Go to Games workshop and buy the books on the drawings.

The Art of Adrian Smith (http://www.blacklibrary.com/artbooks/adriansmith.html)

Adrian Smith (http://www.adriansmith.co.uk/)

Jes Goodwin (http://www.blacklibrary.com/artbooks/gande.html)

Although, these would be just as direction, you need to take into consideration what Midnight says.

Well, if you have trouble with actual detail in general why not try doing observational drawing of trees, try to get there flowing motion correct and keep practicing.

If you already have the knowledge of the anatomy all you need is to push your practising in the areas that you lack.

note: I am also just a student so all my banter is what I have heard/seen and theory.

Blizzin: no problemo.

just draw a skull on each and every body-part and you get quite far..... (not being disrespectul to these artists :) they're awesome)

...you can replace skull with: imperial egal; eye of horus; chaos star;...

if you want to ;)

A note; Anatomy is not only learnt from books. You must also draw from life as well. Don't think tutorials and books will get you everywhere- Learn for yourself about how the world works! Draw self portraits (realistic ones), drawyour friends, or places outside, or your computerdesk.

Speaking of which, what book was it exactly? Just curious.

i find working from books quite rewarding as you cannot strip the skin off a life model to see all her muscles. Also at our college we only have a female model so we dont have no male reference.

btw I learn the dynamics, hands, head form, wrinkles from Burne Hogarths books. The bodies anatomy (muscles/bones) comes from Jeno Barcsay's 'Anatomy For the Artist' (Purchased on Amazon). I also have 'Facial Expressions' from Gary Faigin. I recommend all the books as they are all useful, to me atleast.

When I think warcraft it depends heavily on the faction.. if youre going for fantasy then its ok to be a bit cartoony.. Thick outlines, thinner details, not too much tho.. Massive battle scenes are classic although they do tend to be surprisingly badly done in some warcraft books :P

For 40k the faction part comes in.. for example if you are drawing a picture of the eldars then thin, elegant lines will do the job nicely and soft shading.. If youre doing the spacemarines a realistic style will get you damn far but if you have your heart set on chaos for all means go for thick, splotchy lines and deep large shadows...

Thats warcraft!
