a couple of my recent late nighty/early morning studies from photos, done in painter with my jittery wacom and the smeary round brush, both about 60% of original size. Trying to get at least one or more of these studies done a day amongst other things. I know the first ones a bit naughty but it was really the light I was after (yeah right hehe). any comments/crits most appreciated.

One thing I've always been frustrated with painter+wacom is the inability to change the shape of the stroke with a twist of the stylus..(like square brushes or pens) I think I'd get stuff down in half the time if this was possible.. but maybe I'll be lucky with the next gen of wacoms. it is a relatively simple feature I think would go a long way to extending the traditional media feel. But I still love the fact you can do as many studies as you want and not have to worry about the expense on paint. :)

hey nice studies! i think you captured the for and the way the light hits really well... defining enoughf rom that we understand the stance yet they arent too developed :D
and i DEFINATELY hear you on the rotation of the pen would really help if the brush rotated on screen... i run into frustration a lot too.
but your pics look great anyway :)
oh yeah and if anyone knows if the roration is possible and i am just loony and not aware of this feature .. please say so

Its not the stylus you should be worrying about. Adjust how the pen reacts to your stroke in the Brush Control pallette under 'expression' in Painter. (I still use Painter 6 but I assume this particular feature hasn't changed much.) The bearing and direction feature is quite handy.

I really like these studies. I have been wanting to do some in painter myself. I especially like the one on the right side. Good job:thumbsup:

Those look great, I've seen the ref for the one on the right before, you did a fantastic job capturing and simplifying it
The colors really shine in both of them

hey guys thanks for the response. I was sick last night and I'm getting ready to move house this week (no excuses!) but I'll post some more this week.
Nicodemus: thanks, thats pretty much what my aim was :)
Dicksart: your right!.. I remember this feature being really slow in painter classic, so I kind left it alone when I got ver 7 . It handles much better using the tilt and direction to change the shape of the brush. flat brushes are much better now too! thanks for opening my eyes again to this. makes me realise how little I've played around with the brushes this version.
metaphysiks:thanks when I do these studies I try to paint it what I see in the broadest way possible at first, so background and foreground are painted together and overlap until I refine them a bit.
I.was.ink: cheers yeah I kinda like that one too because it was quick and less fussed over. I'd like to see some painter sketches from you :)
TENLLADO:thank you
Travis: thanks I'll try to keep posting when possible.
Gygaxis: thanks I'm trying to keep them as simple as possible atm and working on my colour sense which I've never had that much confidence with, so your words are very encouraging,
I'm playing with painter's brush settings a bit more to get something a bit more like the brushes I have for my oils. I see it's going to take some time to adjust them to my own prefs.I'd love to find out what brush settings different people use on this forum. hmmm. anyone posted something similar in the painter 7 feedback?

I'm loving you work Rohan. Great job conveying a sense of light on both of them. I especially like how the light is cool on the right and very warm on the left. I would also love to see your oils. Do you have any posts anywhere else? Either way you HAVE too put more work up. It is most definately worthy.
