View Full Version : my sketchbook( #3): a little come back
February 13th, 2006, 11:27 PM
me- heh.... im in a foggy, dark place... where I am?
God of CA- You are in the ConceptArt forum. why dont you post some of your work here son?...
well, hi ! I am Mathieu Bélanger, 15 years old from Sept-Iles, Québec in canada ( im french, but I speak well english, I think ). Like some here, i draw for fun. all started at elementary school, i was drawing little things, not very great, but I was proud of myself. then I leaved my pencil, and took music for about 4 years now. in secondary 3, I was drawing again, some were realy good, other were just like...well...... bha anyway, I stop it and wrote some story for a friend. for 2 or 3 months ago, I meet a great guy. he's just too cool and he shown us he's drawings. that was just like ''BAM!'' and I had to draw aigain, but I had to improve them, push my talent to the max .
I took my pencil ( most of the time, ordinary HB pencils... ) for 3 or 4 months now and worked seriously for 2 months now. I was screaching for some gestures work, and found this gold mine :teeth: . I seen many things here, very great things and I learn more here in a week than I made alone in 2 moths.
Well, after a very long introduction, I start my own sketchbook :D ! I'll update it as many times as possible. some times i write some notes in english or french. i will translate them if needed.
Now the work :D ! :
I made that last week i think, very fresh. as you see on the sexy guy, i need to learn alot from anatomy ( his neck is :x ). i have to make my lines better and work on proportions.
im sleepy :dead: . im going in my welcoming bed. i will update later tomorrow if I have the time. good night all :teeth:
February 14th, 2006, 09:10 PM

I made that today:
( forgot my sketch book in my closet at school :blah: )
February 19th, 2006, 05:33 PM
hey, Ceci parait bon (sorry for my poor french, i take it in school:teeth: ) I would work on anatomy. I suggest buying a book on this. Andrew Loomis is excellent. Look into getting one of his books. Good luck and keep drawing.
February 20th, 2006, 10:27 PM
Dom: your french is good :teeth: thank for the reply.
made this saturday for a friend:
February 21st, 2006, 10:17 PM
just some drawings, I never drew with a reference ( I dont like when I have a precise idea of what im drawing ) but I did just once, just looking what it would give: it surprising, my leg just look like the real one :teeth:
my science theacher ( hello hélène :D ) found me an anatomy book, better than nothing. but for now i have so much homeworks :x .
have a good day
February 25th, 2006, 02:05 AM
made some gestures( some minutes ago ). they are my best for the moment. ( mentler is a unique source of inspiration :D ):
and this is what i made ''yesterday'':
some wierd things:
and a mucles wall ( im not very proud of it :/ )
* if you search me, im already in my bed *
February 27th, 2006, 12:00 AM
I made some torso , alot of cubes and balls. I made thes in an hour, mabe two. it's probably why my head hurt so mutch :x .
If any body can give me tips or say me what things i have to improve ( event if I have a lot ), just post it. I know my drawings are not the best ( realy far of it ), and it is why I made a sketchbook: have opinions for improvement but actualy, I dont see what I have to improve, excluding anatomy.
February 27th, 2006, 12:04 AM
Kudos, man! Keep studying...anatomy, anatomy, anatomy. =]
February 27th, 2006, 11:24 PM
from my biology note last year.
have a nice day
March 4th, 2006, 04:33 PM
I have been realy sick for the last few days so I did'nt draw a lot.
I dont know what to think of my drawings now. they dont have the magic touch anymore. I'm getting nowhere whit this. I should find my way soon, or I will shoot myself :x
well, I'll be back in shcool in 2 days. maybe my pencil will give me some good things in a boring class. :teeth:
March 5th, 2006, 01:29 PM
I made some quick thing ....
and my hand, but it look wierd :x
I just realize than I should pay more attention on my drawings, why I draw and things like that because I act like a robot.
have a nice day :teeth:
March 6th, 2006, 08:38 PM
I made my drawings more precisely and with more attention. I think it is why they looked so lifeless. I put more than a minute on a thing befor changing my mind and criticise it. I still do it very fast, but now I see why I draw.
as I look at my old drawings, I see all what I've done so far. the improvement I've made is amazing. I hope I'll make more :teeth:
March 7th, 2006, 09:57 PM
more sketch: I made some mouths...
March 7th, 2006, 10:30 PM
Hi there! Nice work so far, looks like you're working pretty hard. Keep going with anatomy and try and use references while you're still getting the hang of the human body and face.
March 8th, 2006, 01:30 AM
You are drawing lots.. wow.. that's great. ^^
I think your drawings are a bit stiff though.. I think a good excercise for you would be to watch someone doing something (anything you can think of that is movement but they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.. like someone pacing back and forth while thinking.. someone in your house cooking something... or someone sitting on a bus or in a car reading, or a baby in it's play pen moving around but staying in one stationary place... or that one guy in class (or teacher) you see every day who cant keep fiddling with his pen or his wrist watch or biting his nails... whatever...) and try to capture them as they move... fast sketching.. loosen up.. and then after a few hours of watching people.. pick up a book on Henna designs or some simple tattoo designs and try to draw those instead for hte next couple of hours. Then meditate on the differences. Notice the difference between reality (3-D) and design (2-D). You seem to be floating somewhere inbetween right now.. Most of all your stuff (with the exception of the raven) is looking flat.... once you master how to seperate them and do both individually... your gonna move up a level in skill, cause you'll see why art is so fun and once it's fun you get lost in it more and a piece of you goes in the drawings.... Your drawings will come to "life" more by the breath of your soul. :)
March 9th, 2006, 08:54 PM
chisa- thanks for the reply :teeth: I will use reference each time I can.
missceleste- whoa you are right! :D , I'll apply it to everyday drawings. I sould find the time ( and people ) in class :P .
the past 2 days were good in inspiration:
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/9828/sketch379ci.pnghis arms looks wierd but the overall is not so bad ...
March 10th, 2006, 09:32 PM

I want to say a realy big '' thanks you'' Amélie :teeth: , she gave me an anatomy book giving all the details on bones and muscles.
have a good week-end
March 11th, 2006, 04:38 PM
some things I made yesterday. I would like to have some crits on my legs and arms :
March 11th, 2006, 04:56 PM
Orry dude, i don't mean to be an asshole here, but you really ought to stick to the basics for now. Get yourself some Loomis studies from www.fineart.sk (or other source) and get cracking. The only reason i'm writing this is that you show potential and i think this is the best route for advancing your art. The best teacher is life itsef. Sorry if i come off as condecending that's not the case, i think you have potential, keep at it :)
March 11th, 2006, 08:11 PM
Inkfish- Thanks and dont even worry: at this point I need comments of all forms and it is the only way to see if I'm going in the good way. I'll chek the link for sure ! realy thanks you :teeth: .
If you see wrong things or want to make a comment, by god, do it ! :D even if it is a apocalyptic-demolition-type critics ( well of course, if you can avoid them... :P ), please say it :teeth:
here is the work of the day:
March 11th, 2006, 10:37 PM
anatomy studies of the night :
March 13th, 2006, 09:38 PM
Well, this is a great day for me: my first own sketchbook is complet ! :teeth: I dont know what to say. as I look at all the drawings I made, I realize than all the emotions I had are immortalized in the grey lines of the pencil :D
every time I used a pencil for art, I made improvements.
I also learn anatomy :P and I know more my body ( and I never used so mutch my boilogy notes from last year )
I'ts never been easy. I'm still learning new things ( thanks for the link Inkfish :teeth: ) and I have so much to discover. at the start of all that, I'd never thought it would be so hard to draw simple lines ( :P )

more scratchs ....
March 18th, 2006, 11:57 PM
keep it up, cheers!
March 19th, 2006, 12:14 AM
Looks cool, you're working hard and improving. I'd suggest (as dumb as it sounds) drawing with a sharper pencil. It'll force you to be more conscise- the last few posts' lines look too soft. Also, when you're shading, you should try and make the parts that should be black as dark as you can: push down hard on the pencil. Broaden your range of tone. Good job, keep it up.
March 19th, 2006, 02:51 AM
alright you need to do alot more life drawing before you can make up shit.
March 19th, 2006, 02:14 PM
damdischink- thanks :teeth:
LukeTores- normaly I'm using 0.5 HB mines, but I'm at home so I'm using usual HB2 pencil. I'm trying to get it as sharp as I can ^^. thanks for the advice.
Orozc0- yea I know ...
some things here ...:
( actualy the floating guy is my best drawing until now, at least in the ''corps'' type)
March 19th, 2006, 05:51 PM
first attempt to create a creature. I made him with these data:
-2 or 3 time earth gravity ( massive skeleton and spectacular muscle strenght)
-air composed of 4-5% of oxygene( huge lungs )
back legs are a bit wierd but, he is not bad
March 20th, 2006, 08:44 PM
Back with more creatures.!:
I wanted someting with wierd articulations, and a bit demonic..
completly crazy, gone out of my mind in a clap of finger.the ''tluberculous elastic lobotomisor'' , a flying ... thing. he see the mind, and hold a cancerous tumor in his tentacles. I should sleep soon ^^'
I'm playing with shadow and shadings actualy, very fun.
March 21st, 2006, 09:12 PM
I've got a bad day....
muscles studies and life drawing ( what a life drawing !..... )
March 22nd, 2006, 09:39 PM

my mind dont create anymore .....:upset:
March 29th, 2006, 09:38 PM
MUHAHAHAAAAA !!! after a long break( new computer, f*****g scaner ...) I come back with my every day drawing :
( we see here the influence of fallout )
March 29th, 2006, 09:55 PM
mate i dont see anything but a few pencil lines... no offence like, but i actually feel offended by your postings... to me it shows me that you havent even given it a thought what it takes or even asked yourself what you have to know and do to perform a good productive visual comunication(piece of art).
not to be to harsh il give you some directions:
Find the closest real-life photo, trace it or copy it, whatever it takes, and then once completed draw over it to grid it out and cube it to your brains memory most suited.....this will speed up your improvement.
And THEN you can impress us with your new found knowledge/skills what you can create and visualize.
Dont forget that evreything anyone ever created is a reflection of our very own real-life.
March 29th, 2006, 10:45 PM
Cold - I agree with you on the lifedrawing, I sould do more (probably the worst thing actualy ), but I'm sorry if it hurt to see this crap. I feel like I'm a baby with a pencil trying do draw what he think the things are 2 streets by. I'm totaly new, like I would color my own face with markers.
yes, I probably sould wait and start a new sketchbook later( 6 months, one year ?!? ) when i'll be gifted like you are now. if it set your eyes on fire to see this, tell me befor I put more .
March 29th, 2006, 11:03 PM
dont be daft, after admitting your defeat your have gained the biggest reward ever! Insight! No one can tell you or teach you that.
Anyway, no one is new to anything, just unfarmiliar! ...So farmiliarise yourself first with the things for YOURSELF.
One way of doing it, is thorough study... complete drawings properly, then tamper with them later to find connection with other things in this world, you cant go wrong.
BTW No one is talented in this forum, they all just love knowing all about real-life and immitating it in there own visual expression. If you love life! Actually love being a begger on the street, but you happy because you have your eyes and you can see the yellowish sunlight reflecting off marblestone floor surface, then you have cracked it... love seeing, love life.
You always will get what you desire, time will give it you:)
Edit: Sorry for upsetting you, I just want you to do seriously well
March 29th, 2006, 11:28 PM
at first I was a bit upset but, as I look, you are totaly right.
thanks you :teeth:
April 2nd, 2006, 04:48 PM
i'm trying to understand the muscles by making them bigger than they are. I know, this guy is completly out of proportions.
arm and leg done from a comic book of daredevil, by joe quesada.( right page ) I also done my first character as well. I'll talk of him later...
when i put arms and body in one piece, it look odd.... some hands....
so my first charracter is Grug. he is an orc working for a federal agency deserved to protect and hide magic creatures from the real world. he give reports and informations on what is going on his side and he get the money. thecnology give him an humain apperance and he act as a inssurance counsellor.
July 2nd, 2006, 03:13 PM
back again whit some improvement. I'll just pass by, I still need some time to improve my art, but I want to give some life signs :P :
please leave some comments, it would be great :rendered:
