So I discover this site (CA) about 2 weeks ago and have been lurking in the dark recesses ever since. So much inspiration and hard, passionate work that is going on in here. So nice.
Seeing all of this unfold in front of my eyes, I have decided that art still holds a very dear spot in my heart and has been neglected for too long. *sigh* I had spent my entire High School life in art studies (seem like such a long time ago) and found myself longing for serious study. I had to take 20 years off to raise a family. That in itself has been a completely different journey of it's own. A journey filled with excitement, happiness, sadness and satisfaction. However, something has been missing for a long time and now I think I have found it...drawing and art. While most of my work has ALWAYS been pencils, I now have an incredible want to discover Digital Painting.
To that end, I have joined some classes in traditional Watercolors for color tonal studies and composition. We shall see how that shakes out. I know that I need to "get back to the basics" before I take on the world of digital. That doesn't mean that I won't experiment with Painter or Photoshop from time to time. I will post those as well.
Ok, I don't want to spend my entire evening writing this verbiage so It's time for some very rough sketches that I have done over the past few years. Just doodles really. I never lost the desire to draw...just the ambition and time to study. That is changing....

I recently felt compelled to explore comic style art. This is more recent and re-inforced the fact that I need to revert back to "basics" for a while...:P

WOW!! This is developing into quite the long first post. If any of you are still with me, I'm impressed!! Anyway, the following was drawn just the other night as part of my "getting back to basics" rampage that I'm on.

I look forward to hearing ANYTHING from you folks as I have developed quite the respect for all of you. I will try my hardest to post daily but may prove to be a challenge with my current employment. I travel alot and don't carry a scanner with me. :)
So, let the crits, comments, suggestions and whatever my be, begin.
Thanks so much,

Richard.. good stuff, sir!
Welcome to CA!
Things look good, rendering and such... those lips are awesome. Keep it up with the studies and drawing from life! Which reminds me, are the animals drawn from life or just out of your head?
Keep it coming!

IanE: Thanks a ton for stopping by and commenting. The prarie dog, horse and hawk are from reference. As a matter-of-fact, they are from a series by Gene Franks who is one of my favorites. I love his style and mastery with glazing and rendering using pencils. The skull and "Werlax" are from reference pictures that I had (source unknown). Thanks a ton for the kind words.
I won't have any drawing updates today as I am in Sunnyvale CA until Thursday without a scanner, unless I do some doodling with Painter or Photoshop. We shall see how much energy I have after sitting in this room for over 9 hours straight. :$
Oh, that reminds me...I will also start crediting my references when used. I appologize for not including that with the original post.
Thanks so much!!

Nice sketchbook start. Your first two pictures are nice 8the Lion i kinda weird though). The skull looks nice too.
The prairi dog is looking good but I think lacks some overall shadowing and some parts of the fur look too repetitive.
I see that some of them have already some years. Show us some more recent stuff also.
Cheers

voraz: Hey! Thanks for stopping by and leaving some great text behind! Awesome! Yea, the prairie dog's fur does look a little repetative and he is fat also. :) His name is "Pudgy". As far as the years on some of the drawings, I did state that I was posting a history of drawings at first, the new stuff should be comming on a regualr basis (as long as I don't break my drawing arm).
Thanks again!

Orozc0: You bet man! I'll never stop doodling!
Here is the next update. I drew the following pictures while sitting in the San Jose International Airport. Each pose took anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Humans can't stand still for very long. I was using a Uni-Ball Signo in my 8x6 sketch book that fits in my backpack when working and traveling. :)

San Jose is quite beautiful. There are still plants in bloom this time of year. That is odd from a mid-westerner's point of view. Ha! Blossoms in February? ...Insanity...
Anyway, I hope you enjoy these. As always, any suggestions, crits and comments are very welcome here. :)
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention what my study was with this. I am having problems with clothing and getting the wrinkles to look good. Any suggestions? A cloth and drapery study perhaps?
Thanks,

I tried to have a larger update tonight but am really tired from work this week. I did sit down and painted a lemon in Photoshop. This was done with a mouse and took me a little longer than I would have liked but since this is my 4th, serious attempt at a painting in Photoshop. I find that I absolutely dislike drawing/painting digitally with a mouse. So, I ordered a Wacom Intuos 3 6X8 tablet today and can't wait for it to get here. Anyway, here is my lemon....

Painting with a mouse? Intense... I plan to order an Intuos3 9x12 with my tax return!! Hope you enjoy yours, I can't wait...
The life sketches look sketchy....mine look the same, but yea, tricky humans! All you can really do is put in more hours and more ink and you'll see the improvement! The lemon, though... I'm sure it isn't done or easy to do with a mouse of all things, but it would really bring out so much from it with texture instead of just a smooth coat of yellow... I see you put in some texture to it but it reminds me of a foam Nerf type projectile more than a lemon... still, very good with the mouse! Keep it up!

February 18th, 2006, 10:37 AM
IanE: Thanks for coming back! :) It's hard to get anything but a "sketchy" feel to the life sketches when they are drawn so quickly and no re-touch. I guess they will start to look more fluid after...say...i draw a million of them? I agree with you totally about the lemon. Several things here: 1) Painting with a mouse (I don't understand how you others do this). 2) No reference material (completely from memory) 3) Late at night.
These are not excuses, mind you but they are influences to the end result. Oh, I WILL be painting more of these in the future. There were other goals with the lemon as well. I was playing with color (which I have a hard time with). The selection of the paper color (grey) to complements the hues in the lemon to make it "pop" and then complimentary colors behind the lemon to add contrast. Also I was practicing a gradient shading technique that was illustrated in this thread:

Love the feedback...It really helps...

I see you got the same book as i got. Comics the marvel way:) itsa great book, but if you really wants to learn how the human anatomy looks, you should step by www.fineart.sk . great site, nevermind the language of the site. hope it helps . your off a good start!

KeaL: Thanks for visiting! I appreciate the words! Yea, that book is ok but the comic style drawings were the first and last time I opened that book. If you notice the date on those were a couple years ago. I was going through a phase. :) Thanks for the link! I WILL be checking that out. I have several anatomy and anatomy for the artist books. Very good references.
Here is another update. This time it's the lemon as before but in traditional medium. I used block pastels on textured, colored paper. This was a learning experience as this is the very first time I have used actual pastels sticks. As I learn color control and contrast these will turn out better. :) I think I am going back to pencils for today and see what happens and what comes out. Possibly an update later tonight.
Anyway, here is the pastel fruit:

Holy smokes. It's been two days without an update. My appologies. I'm on the road again and can't scan any current sketches, drafts, drawings or whatever. :) If I do something digital I will post, otherwise I'm due back from Dallas TX on Wednesday and will scan that night. Thanks for being patient!

Here is tonights update. I was very frustrated the last couple of days. My brain wants to rush through the "practice" drawings by adding too much detail early on. I think that is the reason I'm having a hard time with anatomy. It takes a long time and I understand that. Here is the updates:
Here is a hand and head study. Not much here due to the work I had to do in Dallas. I'm pretty pooped at the end of the day.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Drawing_Sketch_Study001_RWM.jpg
Continuing in the anatomy department, this next one was the only presentable sketch. :upset: Everything I drew that night was crap. :)
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Drawing_Old_and_Young_RWM.jpg
This is a doodle of a landscape I may make larger. I have not decided yet.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Drawing_Landscape0001_RWM.jpg
That's it for now. I was hoping I could have more but it's been frustrating. :) I'm getting over it now...but it will be back.
Thanks,
Richard_M
Why yes...I DO have a Sketchbook (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=61599)

Well, I'm on the road again. Hopefully this will be the last trip for a while. I hope so as I want to be able to update this sketchbook on a more regular basis. My new tablet is estimated to arrive at my house on the 27th. I can't wait. It's currently somewhere in the middle of the nation (at least that is what UPS says). Anyway, perhaps I can get access to a scanner in Olympia, WA. as I will be there until next Thursday.

I figured that I would post an update. I have been soooooo bogged down with work that it's been running late into the night. I wish we didn't have to work for the almighty dollar then we could actually live how humans were suppose to live. Anyway, just wanted to post an update. It helps to remind me of what I need to do.
On a lighter side, my new tablet showed up at my house while I was away and now I can't wait to try it out!!! Oh, I think that it will be GREAT fun to experiment with it. Yea!!
Thanks,

I finally got a little time to play around. I was sick this weekend and had no energy for anything. I also seem to have lost a sketchbook somewhere. Don't know where but it had some sketches in it that were recently done. I hope I can find it. Anyway, here is a hand study that I did last night:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Drawing_Sketch_Study002_RWM.jpg
I also got the chance to play with the new Wacom tablet. This is what I was able to produce:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Digital_Doodle001_NoPaint_rwm.jpg
As you can see, I have a long row to hoe before things start looking better. All good things to those who wait... :)
I liked the mushrooms so much, I decided to try and paint them. Here is the result:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Digital_Doodle001_rwm.jpg
It was a fun experiment. I learned some things while doing it. I think I will like digital media for producing work. It's kinda nice. :)
Anyway, still kinda under the weather and I'm also now adjusting to new glasses. Glasses are a new concept for my brain. I like the fact I can now see detail at a distance. What I didn't know was how bad my eyes were.
Comments and observations are always welcome here...
Thanks,

rob-ot: Thanks for stopping by. Boy I sure need a TON of practice. :) Yea, I'm kinda partial to the pencil studies as well. I need to sit down and complete those or start some landscapes. I really dig the nature stuff. Still, I'm having fun with this Digital Format.
And with that, here are my latest thoughts on digital paper:
This first one is digital charcoal and watercolors in Painter

On that last post of yours I see a lot of progress. The line is loose and the form of the girl seems anatomically right. Only thing that bothers me a bit is the hands. I took a ten year break from drawing so I'm glad to see that there are others as "intelligent" as I am. Of course you have an excuse cause you've been raising a family. Will keep following your progress for sure.
Richard_M
March 27th, 2006, 01:38 PM
Placeboast: Thanks for stopping by! Raising a family does take a considerable amount of time. It's rewarding none the less. Not that family matters go away after that, they just change focus, intesity and meaning. Thanks for noting the progress. It is frustrating at times. I do know what you mean about the hands. Arggg!! I intend on doing more hand studies to aid me. That is why I'm going to concentrate on Paper and Pencil more now. I can't get the tactile feedback from the tablet like I do on paper.
I will be working on finishing some of my previous pieces. I am currently working on finishing the horse from my previous post. I can't wait to finish it. Using that technique takes a little while as everything is glazed and rendered with individual lines. :) Fun stuff. I love it.
Thanks,
Richard_M

March 27th, 2006, 01:49 PM
What's up Richard. You draw animals very well, but your people could still use some work. I think this difference in quality is probably because we don't have as many preconcieved notions about animals as we do humans. In other words, just make sure you're drawing exactly what you see. Keep sketching man, you're doing a great job so far!
Richard_M
March 27th, 2006, 01:55 PM
sith: You are right about the human animal. I think there is a want and desire to get ALL of the accentuation correct and make sure the form looks exactly like the source. We tend to not wanting to hurt the feelings of others and getting the look of an individual wrong tends to foster that feeling. That is what I think. I WILL be working on studying the human animal more, but on paper. I would like to attend some life drawing sessions here in my area. I'm currently looking now. :)
Relax...Breath...then draw... :)
Thanks again!

I agree with sith, your animals are quite a bit better than your humans. That said, that last figure is showing marked improvement over the previous ones, so be sure to keep up those studies. :) By the way, that smilodon skull study looks awesome.
On a different note, I swear, this must be the fourth sketchbook I'm visiting tonight that is conspicuously missing the comments I'm so sure I left a few nights ago. Maybe I was dreaming or something. o_O

So, it's been about a month since I last posted. Damn... Work has been incredibly INSANE. So many projects...so little time.
Anyway, enough of my complaining about work stuff. Here is my latest submission. This is a result of my Watercolor class that I am taking. This is my first ever watercolor painting. It is a negative painting study. I found it quite fun actually. I think I am going to like watercolor alot. Anyway, the first picture has the negative space painted.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/P4050062.jpg
The second picture is the completed study. Now, I know that my pencil lines are VERY VERY heavy. The point of the study was the negative space.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/P4270085.jpg
So much for my first watercolor. My first painting really. I like the pencils, but this was fun. :)
I am still very busy with work right now and will post as often as I can.
Thoughts?

Hello all. Let me preface this post with an appology. I'm not a photographer so my pictures of my non-digital work leaves a lot to be desired. *sigh* I just looked at my previous post and gasped. :)
Anyway, sorry for the quality and here we go.
The first two are color studies in watercolor as part of my watercolor class that I'm taking. I really like watercolor. It's fun.
Here is the cool color study:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/P4300006.jpg
I like the way the flower turned out. The color contrast looked nice. MUCH BETTER IN PERSON. :)
Here is the warm color study:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/P4300007.jpg
The flower in this one looks very vibrant in person.
So I was inspired by all the flowers that I have had to paint lately and decided to do a Prismacolor Verifine pencil of an Iris. This was a drawing reference and tutorial from Polly "Lee" hammond. Man, I love her work alot!! Anyway, here it is:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/P4300003.jpg
Again, I really wish that I had better pictures of them as they look so much better.
As always, thanks for stopping by. Please, leave a note.
Thanks,

Sorry I have not posted as of late. Again, my real job has interrupted my hobbies. I do have a couple of things to post. Which I will try to do soon. Maybe tonight if I actually sit in front of my computer. I deal with computer technology for a living so dealing with it at home is a challenge. :)
Anyway, I will be posting more soon.

I finally sat down and imported my pictures of the last couple of things that I did.
I am still stuck on the floral theme. This is due largly to the Watercolor class that I am taking. I really like drawing and painting flowers. There are some neat lines within flowers. Very fun.
This first painting was created using Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils. This was interesting as the pigment doesn't flow like regular watercolor and you really need to play around with them and get an understanding of color value with them. Anyway, here is the painting:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f65/rmckay001/Art_projects/Flower001_RWM.jpg
The next drawing is of a pink rose that I borrowed a picture of from a fellow student in my class. I remembered to take pictures at various stages. I liked the way this one turned out but I absolutely HATE the pictures of it. This was done with Prismacolor Thick Lead Pencils on Canson Eggshell drawing paper.

And the final piece:

Hey there! I thought I'd stop in and check out your sketchbook. I'm definitely lovin' the animal sketches...I'd like to see the finished products of the couple you're still working on! I also really like the color sketches of the rose and iris! The skull study is very good as well...basically, I like your "stuff"! :^^:

I have been so busy with my professional life that I have not given my artistic side any attention. I have prepared a posting for today. I can't say that I will update anytime soon but I will update as often as I can. I now have grand children in my life and they are a ton of fun!
Anyway, on with the post.
Let's start with some quick doodles. Here are two flowers that were done with colored sharpies while I was on the phone at my desk.

They are done on horrible copy paper so the sharpies bled all over the place. :)
The next image was a result of me looking at Mentler's (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26748) sketchbook - "The Book of Bones". I love the bone doctor! :) I didn't finish the study because I was interupted.

Here are some quick sketches, again on the phone at my desk. That seems to be the only time I get lately. >:{ These are done from memory.

Here is a hand study that I actually sat down at home and had the time to concentrate on.

I will try and post more at a regular interval. As before, all comments are very welcome and encouraged.
Until next time,

Hey there! Your hand studies are pretty good...I think the open hand in the center of the page is your best! I'm likin' the sharpie flowers too! I wish I could draw on the job!!!
Keep posting...I'd like to see more of your "stuff". (I'll work on mine too, and we can see who can keep their sketchbook the most up-to-date!) :P Yup...that was a challenge! hehe

klw1981: Hey! Thanks for stopping in again. :) I'll take that as a challenge! Perhaps that will add to my motivation so I get off my ass and start drawing every day. >:D Thanks for stopping by!!
More to come...

So, it has been OVER 2 years since I have posted anything in my Sketchbook and shame on me. :)
Anyway, I have taken time to explore music and composition. I have now returned to what makes me happy and that is art. In recent times I have explored a new medium to me. One that I have never tried before but always wanted to and that is oils.
Here is my latest attempts at oils:
This first picture is oils on 12"x16" canvas board and is also my first attempt with oils:

This second painting is also oils on 12"x16" canvas board:

Here is another that is on 12"x16" canvas board:

and the final painting that I have ready is again 12"x16" oils on canvas board:

I hope that you like them and as always, comments are VERY welcome.
Thanks,
Richard
