fantastic post's The first panel of the first image just grabbed me excellent potrayal of light! Thanks for posting trully a feast for the eyes.. The only thing that sticks out to me is the projected shadow in panel two image one the shadow of the girl looks faked not actually what it would look like, however I could be wrong and its a minor detail great work!

Awesome pieces, dude!! I always love it when an artist is able to make a cold color appear warm (just like you do with the blue sky)!! Thanks for sharing, dude!

wow, the jeans on the sitting angel is perfect! looks like a photograph...greatly done!

I wonder about the girls right ear in the moonlight image though...looks too bright compared to the overall lighting setting...

Great works, very solid! Only thing that bugs m is the size of the sittig angel's head as compared to the rest of her. I'm glad they allow you to use the digital medium so extensively where you study :)

really nice. very good skintones, the jeans on that one caught my eye as well.. Unless she's supposed to be like 13 or something, the head is a tad too big on the last image.

Thanks everybody!

vctr: yeah... i think I forgot to go back over that with another pass. That's basically a placeholder shadow that I stuck there. Good eye :)

matt: Thanks! I hope I can keep it up :p

Main Loop: I don't know how old she is... she's either 13 or a very small woman.

Robin: But the's an angel... or she will be one :)

Posh: Thanks! I'm using Painter mostly. Some Photoshop for color manip.

Irene: Thank you :) I look forward to seeing you in April!

wow the sequential page is really nice. only comment i would have is in the first panel. the bird farthest to the right seems to be blending into her head, or creating some kind of tangent. maybe separate the two with a shadow?

Great work, man. The first piece , the one at the bridge, is just so evocative.... Of all the works I've seen from you, that's the one on which content equals technique. In my opinion you're getting somewhere and so soon ! Sure you'll be one of the artists to have a nice place in the industry in the near future, if you keep working this hard !
5 stars from me !

These are just groovy, Jason.

I love that first one with the birds. The sunshine, lighting and feel of the city is great and i particularly like the cast shadow of the girl on the ground below. Does it end there? Or is there more?

nice to see some good artists coming out of the academy. one thing i noticed on the 2nd piece is her neck seems to be at the wrong angle. either that or i think there is a piece of fur from her outfit that is a tangent with her neck, making it look like her neck cuts back at a drastic angle.

Those artworks for your homepage is (are?) awesome! I hate manga, that's just the way it is. But the kind of manga you draw, only slightly inspired by it, that's just awesome! Really good use of colors, everything is just great.

And the colors on the first one slay me. Great job.

hey man, i didnt sift through the slog of replies, so excuse me if im doubling up a comment.

but on the last couple angel pics, the wing structure seems to be different on ea ch side of her. The wing facing us has a bend in it but the rear wing sweeps away with apparently no 'elbow' in the wing...

This may be stylistic, or intentional in the design?

I'm really diggin the direction you have been going with your work Jason. You seem to have a lot more fluidity in the forms of the figures...not that they were stiff before, but now they really seem to have more life.
I'll be at Art Out Loud in April...be sure to meet the NY gang :)

Hey Jason. When you start a fresh canvas, is it 600px, 3000px, what? Then you just start pushing around color, or do you sketch with pencil first, or maybe scan a real line drawing? What's your process?

JasonChan
February 15th, 2006, 12:40 PM
I usually doodle up something, but nothing worth sticking to. My doodles are mainly for composition and ideas to flow. From there I go to paint with a minimum of 300 to 400 dpi, keeping the file atleast the size of a piece of paper just in case I want a poster or something later :) When I don't want to use pencil, the process is still the same except I doodle with color instead of pencil. Doodles are just necessary for commission work because my clients need to know what I'm going to do.

Fantastic stuff man! I love the moody/angelic contrast and the lighting and color are spot on!

If I had to be picky and offer a critique, the eyes on the second (predominately blue) piece seem too big... or even simply too flat for how big they are. I think it's a fine stylistic choice but it threw me off a little.

great work!!

Remember this is from a complete 'Joker' so take it or leave it.

You have painting Down. Stop skimping on the anatomy and really push your compositions to a new ground that will set you apart from others. This is all 'next level' stuff so don't take it as an insult. Just ideas how I personally feel you could move forward more quickly.

Fun stuff as always.

Oh, such beautiful white hair!! :D :D Her face is so smooth and soft, yet there's something about it that makes her seem glum...I love it!!

I was curious about her wings in the third picture (though I think someone noticed this differently), but the wing on our left looks like hair more than feathers! Though, it's really neat, like the wing's been unwoven somehow!
