:right: PLEASE CONSOLIDATE YOUR WIPS AND FINALS INTO YOUR FIRST POST.

:right: CLEARLY DESIGNATE YOUR FINAL.

DEADLINE
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH.

--------------------------

VENUS ON THE HALF SHELL, REVISITED

http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/image.asp?id=2921

We need a revision of Botticelli's Venus (the other characters are not needed). It needs to be contemporary, but not trashy. Venus, for this illustration, needs to capture the character of love, beauty, and the strength of womanhood. Class is the word of the day. It needs to be elegant, slightly, but not overtly, erotic for the Valentine week (yeah, it's slightly late, so make it special!). The clam shell is imperative to the character illustration. Ideally, the finished image will in some way be reminiscent of Botticelli's piece, while at the same time presenting womanhood, beauty and love in a fresh, contemporary light. Keep it original and creative.

What!? HOT CHICK TOPIC AGAIN!? LOL
Heh. Yeah. I had serious reservations about this, but I had promised myself that we would do at least one Valentine themed ChOW.

Incidently, this wasn't my first choice. You get that next week. :needle:

After last weeks topic, I think this one's perfectly justified. Besides, I love working on things that are easy on the eyes.

contemporary, classy, and not so-trashy.. hmm.. will do

Though seriously Venus doesn't necessarily have to be a "hot chick" (although it helps :teeth: )

actually by modern standards Botticelli's Venus, isn't a "hot chick" She isn't the "Popular shape" Frazzetta would never have drawn her, and Vogue would have laughed.

nice topic. got ta try it.

Hey all,
posting my final, busy this week so finished it over night. Had to draw this topic!

Chow 17: Venus On The Half Shell, Revisited

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a48/-Michael-/Venus.jpg

This is Venus. A goddess from the 'Hills of Valentina'. Once.. she was loved, you can still she a small memory on her shoulder. There's always a little smile on her face, that's because of him (he's an eternal happy memory). The only problem... he was mortal. So, can't give her love to him anymore, she gives to all people in need of love. The choice of the haircolor, like fire.. she's HOT!

Modern Venus: Goddess of Love, but like all modern females, there's a lot more to her than that. She's strong, independent, compassionate, wise, but can't shake the feeling that the shell makes her butt look big...

Supposed to be shopper ascending from escalator with clam ad/poster in background. I went ahead and added the other characters.

Wow, Rustylynn, really clever take! Remaking an iconic image is daunting, I'll see how I go, was going to think about taking it down a witty route but would never of nailed it like your idea!!
Also, maybe by today's standards she not hawt, but that is why we are giving her a 21st Century makeover!

Ok, heres a wip, basically my track was the dead boring track to take, I'm basically sticking with the same pose as the Botechelli, but just updating her to fit with our standards of what is generally considered beautiful in the mainstream media of today, ie skinny. (Despite the fact that the average female (and males!) aren't really thin, oh well!)

Hmm... well, I thought I would give this one a stab, and started working with the first thing that came to mind after reading the topic.. but now after reviewing what's been posted, maybe I'm doing this wrong... the whole "contemporary" thing... I just don't know.
Here's a close up (about 1/2)of the wip... should I keep going? or will this not make it to the voting round in the end?

Edit: Here is the final. I still would like to refine this more, perhaps I will after Chow.

oh and i just shot it cause i didnt feel like scanning (too big)
oh and i was a bit too lazy to change the lens so you get the macro

That's totally cool, because you have a reason for deviating from the description, AND I know damn well that you could do "erotic" if you felt it was appropriate for the picture.

Good work all.

Chuck mate, love the concept, nice tones, very calming. Only one question -- what is going on with her right arm? Seems to get really broad as it disappears into the clam shell. Or is that line a bend in the body? I could be seeing things, but something seems odd there.

Oreg, what I have up is obviously still WIP, so if I don't update it, don't take it to poll. prob'ly stating the obvious, but whattheheck, it's only a few keystrokes.

However, I have some bad news. I must bow out of the CHOW and Conceptart.org as a whole for indefinate length of time. I have matters that need my complete and undevided attention.

Whoa, Oregano, that's too bad to hear - I hope things are okay for you!

Well, here's my entry, for what it's worth, if this thing is to go on. I really enjoyed this one:

http://home.comcast.net/~samsausum/birth.jpg

The Birth of Venus -
Boticelli's work is of a woman who represents love and beauty at its finest. In my reinterpretation, I wanted to maintain these values while at the same time making it applicable to today's world. My first idea was to somehow re-interpret the half shell, and I began with half an artillery shell, and the idea for the rest of the piece came naturally. Most importantly, this is not a statement about war - but a depiction of the human capacity for beaty in the midst of desolation, and love in the face of hate and loss.

Ah damn oregano, I hope u come back soon man. Gl in your endeavour.

http://people.uleth.ca/~andrew.melnychukosee/portolio/venusFinal.jpg
I put a more contemporary spin on it. Like more fantasy that a revisit.

A eccentric billionaire obsessed with the god of beauty devoted a research and development department into extra dimensional studies in order to find the god and bring her to this world. He oddly succeeded.

Predictably, he fell in lov, he was never happier, he lost his heart to the goddess, his mansion, company and liquid assests in the divorce a 6 months later. Venus hasn't been seen since.

Steph Laberis.... Thanks man. I've had your sketchbook in my favorites tab for a long time. I have been very timid before submiting any of my stuff in here.

Oregano - Shane - I sincerely hope that everything is okay and that whatever is taking up your time now is not a bad thing and that all's well in your world. You have done a FAB job of moderating the CHOW - you will be missed!

This is my paeon to Matt Dixon's brilliant post in CHOW#8 - Battle Angel.
Just cos there are so many fit birds in this thread, here's one a little bit different. It's a crap painting - the shell under her backside was supposed to look shattered from the weight, but it looks nothing like it.
Fozz - as you are stepping in for Oreg, I'll ask you not to take this one to poll - it really is just meant to be a bit of fun.

Thanks W!L - I didn't really follow the brief though - it would be more appropriate if the brief had been 'Venus after 100 years of eating Big Macs and chocolate covered hobnobs'

<clip> ...not being so clichemy take on this assignment was to use the cliche in a fresh and contemporary manner, raising it out of the realm of cliche; too much deviation from the "source" might make the rework hard to associate with the original.

Standing: urghh! <insert "barf" smiley here> Baroness Harkonnen? ;) well, at least she hasn't fallen prey to the demands of culture and taken up both binge and purge.

Couldn't agree more Masque - I just made this as a break for the eyes from all the hotness on the thread:teeth:
Definitely not for poll - it is a deliberate deviation from the brief.

Darn, too late to capitalize on the Iraq theme. Nice one, Djehuti.

Botticelli depicts the new born Venus as the pearl of an oyster, a precious commodity of the day. Oil is today's currency, and the embattlement of womens' rights in the middle east is a current topic. It's as if womanhood is just now being born. Anyway, that's the idea.

Oreg, that's a shame to hear. I'm sure everyone here will await patiently for your return. Good luck with your official duties. Meantime I think everyone will continue carrying CHOW on.

I'm looking at a lot of wonderful ideas here. I've given up on mine after working on it last night. Couldn't get her to look classy enough and I couldn't spend more time on her because I have to get 3 projects done for next tuesday's deadline.

I will make my vote count though. Keep up the good work everyone. Vampirehunger, Djehuti, Standing and Chuck caught my attention so far (because of the extremes they bring out). DepleteD's has a fantasy spin to it and Masque brings out subtleties as usual.....Waiting to see Posh's completed piece on this. HCow-CHOWs always bring in the entries :dur:

tottaly agree son. I ment the cliche of typically taking the oppurtunity to draw a hot girl. which i am guilty of.

Good works so far.

Shane, I am sorry to hear about your departure. Hope everything works out.

I don't know if someone has agreed to step in for him or not, but I would gladly do it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: anyone posting WIPs prior to finals should check their posts to make sure they are properly updated. i think CA had to revert to a previous database recently, and your post may be referencing old urls to WIPs (mine was two days old, f'rinstance).

CA guys, this is just a friendly heads up, not a complaint, please don't shoot the messenger ;)

what`s happening?!yeah, change can be a bit troubling, Chuck, but we can weather it as a community, methinks. :yayca: btw, i don't think they're consolidating activites into one, just providing a "coordinated concept" framework between them.

Oregano, I hope all is well and I'm pretty sure we will be missing your presence until you come back. Take the time to settle what you have too.

Ok.This is quite a surprise and for my part, I thought those seperate activities kicked ass and gave us a perspective of practicing our future trade by concentrating on a single thing. I personnaly do not wish it to end. And even though I might not be a great artist I like seing all of what you do, and find it a source of inspiration. I do not mind the Idea of merging all four conceptual subjects all in one and it is just as true that the 1 week deadline might be short for some people to work on an environment, creature, character and industrial thingy. Probably I did not understand the idea correctly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I would not mind keeping Oregano's work alive and I think Masque and chuckmate might be good CHOWsitters.

Oregano, very sorry to hear you're stepping down :( Hope all is well. You'll be missed.

Wish I could finish my entry, but I'm just crushed with work right now. Thought I'd put up what I've got so far - not enough to take to the polls.

Some great entries here!

Oregano: Sad to see you go man. Thanks for your contributions to this communiity. Time and true devotion is the highest gift anyone can give.

BlueFooted: Such a shame. That looked to be one serious entry. It would have been nice to see the rendered version.

yep, you didn't understand...the campaign will change nothing at all...we will have only one week (next week), where each activity has the same general topic...that's all...the week after the campaign all weeklies will continue with their own topics...no harm you see :)

and now i will close this thread since the deadline is over, i will set up the poll thread tomorrow...
