Seth Fisher, who was a close friend of mine, died last week in Tokyo on January 30th 2006. It may seem out of place for me to do this, but I wanted to put together a small tribute to Seth and showcase his work here on the forum. At least, I feel like I owe it to him and his mind bending art work.

For those of you whom do not know of him, he was an amazing comic book artist that stood out from the crowd. His work was beautiful, quirky, cartoony, and very imaginative. To date, Green Latern: Willworld is my favorite work he created for DC comics. Of course, his work was continually evolving and always flooring me with his concepts.

I knew him personally and can honestly say that he dynamically changed my life in many ways. Just as a person, a human being, he radiated so much energy that you cannot help to be engolfed by his presence. For those whom did know him, you know what I am talking about. BK has a wonderful story about Seth that speaks volumes of his character and being.

Last, but not least. Here is a small glimps into the worlds he was creating. Our existence was a better place with him around and I will deeply miss his presence. I've found my friendships with my fellow artists are deep and have an amazing impact on my life. I can only hope to live life passionately and to evolve with my family of friends.

When I first heard about this I was super bummed, now I'm even more depressed. We didn't loose just a great artist, but it sounds like a great guy also. The world truly seems to need more of those right now.

My thoughts are with his family.

Bomba.

Thank you for that tribute.

I only met him for a few moments at a Comic Con years ago. Even though I don't follow comics much, his work stuck with me for all that time. I was so sad to hear that he had past away.

I think it's nice that you made this post. I'm sorry to hear you lost a friend, and that the world has lost another talented artist. I hadn't seen alot of his work before, but I do remember seeing the Green Lantern book in Previews when it was released.

I've been pretty bummed since I heard about his death, and especially that I had only just recently discovered his work. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for posting this tribute, Jason. I'm still in a state of disbelief that he is gone. I worked with him for six years or so, coloring a lot of his work. He was one of the best people I knew--certainly the most original. He had so much potential, and I think that he was on the cusp of gaining the larger audience he deserved.

My heart goes out to his wife and young son.

Thanks to all for the replies and thoughts. I'm still rethinking over and over about him.

vigostar---> He has a website that is still running at the moment. Not sure what future the site has, but hope it will be around for awhile.

cchuckry---> It's unfortunate that we are meeting this way, but I'm comforted that you posted. I agree with you 100% He was well on his way to a larger audience and comic fame. I'm still in shock of it all and constantly thinking of his family, wife, and child.

I fear I may be getting a little mooshy, but once again appreciate everyone for taking a moment to view and respond to Seth's work.

Didn't know this artist, but was deeply touched by your post, Bomba. So senseless. I'm sorry for your loss and that of his family. Hopefully everyone in this community can check out Seth's website as the tiniest act of tribute that each of us can perform. Again, my deepest condolences.

UPDATE. 02-09-06
Bk, who was also a friend of Seth's, sent me a wonderful story that he wrote that speaks volumes of how unique and loveable Seth was. Thank you BK.

"I attended Seth's party during the Comicon (can't remember the year now) ... took Rick Berry over there and had a great time. Jeez, I think he even did a flip for us in his backyard. Seth invited any and all over and later that night had some touching words that it had been the best party for him since he was a kid ... He laughingly said how parties like this never work out for him, but this turned out how he imagined and more. Reflecting back now, it was an honor to be present at a day he felt carried that sort of mark. It was just burgers and friends, but Seth didn't seem like the sort that needed a full blown production to see the value in sharing good company.

This news just really hit me in a weird way today. I had his "Green Lantern: Will World" comic out today just looking at it. Mind blowing work through and through ... He gave it to me at his house ... thumbing through it playing it all back ... a very smart, warm, and completely unique human being. Such a tremendous loss. He's roughly my age (I'm 32) and gone. Playing back various thoughts of him and some brief time together. Only a handful of memories really, but enough to get a sense of the unique and wonderful human being he was.

First time I met him he was in a dinosaur costume his mom made for him. He was very business-like at first (only knew eachother through e-mail) ... just straight talk as his head stuck out the open mouth of a giant muppet ... had me cracking up while he looked at me flatly as though it was the most natural thing in the world. Forget all those gothic posers you see at cons or whatever ... with black on black clothes and makeup and shit pierced through every flap of available skin ... dime a dozen ... you wanna be different? Really different? It's the guy that sports a barney-esque costume ... -that's- a man that's truly different. Different isn't fashionable. Different is simply that.

Later that day I talked to his AD over at Presto, Phil Saunders (which made Myst 3 with him), and mentioned Seth's outfit and how much I loved it ... how great it is to truly be "off the beaten path" and wear a costume like that to the con when most are trying to be cooler than cool ... I'll never forget Phil looking at me with a smirk and in deadpan delivery says "he usually wears that to work too, ya know?" ... what an original ... I had an even -higher- level of respect for him after that.

Thought I'd attach two images that embody him most to me ... first is his surreal cover to his equally surreal "Will World" comic and the other is the famous image of the burning monk that he once said was his favorite all time image. In some strange way, the images relate in my mind ... parallel one another ... in a way that only Seth would come up with ... and somewhere I know a burning monk walks the streets of Will World eternally.

Seth, you'll be missed, my friend.
love and light to his family and friends.

Jason,

Awesome of you to post this tribute. I had only met Seth once in San Diego and was floored he knew who I was. Because I certainly knew his work well. He was the warmest person I met during the comic-con that year and I have always remembered him. I even have some of his work in my studio. We had talked about collaborating and now I wish I had pressed harder for that so I could have known him better. What an amazing artist. This is the first I have heard of his death and it is so sad. He was so young and I just knew he was gonna be huge! My sympathies go out to his family.
