View Full Version : The Hunter
Nimrod

Hey, don't think I've ever posted anything finished =0.
I've been seeing this character pop up a bit in my sketchbook lately, and this started as a sketch for the hunters DSG... I really like him, and want to develop him more for a little personal project of mine, so I decided to post him here and see what people think. So in addition to technical crits (always welcome) please let me know how you like the look, design, etc.

Personally, I think the rifle needs work and will change a lot. Also, I see him as being wrapped up in a big shapeless shawl or cloak type thing most of the time, but I thought that would be pretty boring, so here is the armor underneath. I was going to draw the shawl-ed version up in the corner but I forgot, so. blah

Awesome concept Nimrod!!! I love that armor. Is he a dinosaur hunter? Or just a hunter with style?
The background looks awesome, but I don't know about that baby blue. Maybe a light orange ...
I think the legs might be too short for him as well.
Don't mind me. AWESOME JOB!!! :chug:

First of all :chug: this one is sweet!
No more praise now, just suggestions!
You said it yourself the rifle needs work, at the moment it is difficult to see the perspective on it. in some points it feel like it is seen from the side on others from the top.
I like the design on the rifle, especially the trigger, but it looks s#%t heavy, and that hunter must be the nex Mr.Universe to keep it up like that. I say this cause the guy doesn't seam to be moving, he is very static, he is waiting and just holding that position. Like he is afraid to scare his prey.
Great paint marks on the skull, all I miss is some highlights on the armor and rifle. and some shadows to.... At the moment the light is comming in from all directions.
Didn't want to be harsh, but this one is really good, just not perfect yet!
oh one question: how fast can he get out of that suit if he has to go to the bathroom really fast?

Hey thanks for all the replies guys. LOL @ Maxx!
Good points all, too. As for short legs, thanks for bringing that up, cause I forgot to say I intentionally gave him longish arms and shorter legs, to give him a slightly simian or atavistic appearance (he lives in the wild like an animal after all)... I think the style this entire body of art will be in will be somewhat exaggerated, not really cartoony, but not totally real either. Also, he's not specifically human either :) but still, maybe legs a bit too short.
It is a bit too in the middle values, that's a recurring problem of mine :( Gotta push those darks and pick out those highlights.
Right about the rifle, I dunno why he isn't resting it on the ground, I wanted that but for some reason I spaced out and put the shadow way underneath ??? crazy... I did want him to be superhumanly strong though. Right now it looks like he's being really careful not to let it touch the ground. *shrug*
Oh its a fantastical thing, they never have to use the bathroom :) (anyone ever see Pleasantville?)

I like the colors in it. The composition is also good. And I LOVE the clothes.

very cool but the only thing that bothes me to death is the size of the gun. it looks as if the gun is the size of him or bigger, and looks really heavy!!! All I know is if I wanted a gun id want something a bit more stealth or a bit smaller, even for a rifle, looks outrageously large!!
very cool hunter though

Nice NImser!!! i really love the design of his costume. you get the feeling its a part of the character--like its his only outfit. his upper back is really successful-- i think we lose interest below the waist
im not crazy about the skull mask--it seems pretty bland compared to his costume--plus it doesnt feel like its really attached and it doesnt look like hed be able to see out of it
its actually a good idea i just think you can push it furhter
maybe play around with skull types that are a little more abstract shapes?
the gun is dope but it would feel more in harmony with the character if it didnt feel like a real world weapon--i would push the color/and material of it moer so it doesnt feel like a stretched out AK47/rifle.
then again maybe you are going for a level of familiarity with these objects--i dont think your there yet on this guy--but i think you have a great start
also that white border is distracting from your character--lpease have pity on my eyes and cover up the white with blue or anything-- ithink itll help ALOT
if you disagree with any of this then disregard--its all design preference-- i love costume/character design so.....
good ORIGINAL SHIT NIM!!!!

this is a killer design-
sugestions for improvment- the costume could use some more subtle color variations, like it was made from the skin, hide, fur of other annimals, you could vary the texture feel too. the buckle or stickes could be rendered to make them look like metal fasteners,
i would vary the texture and color of the gun and his costume so one looks softer and the ither looks more like a hard wood.
i would keep your color changes moderate, and not loose the cool semi camoflauge look the character has
his boots could be look more used by adding mud ,blood or dirt stains
i really like the big heavy gun, for this post mabye the hilt can be resting on the ground
and on a purely stylistic note i would like to see some chinstrap holding the skull on his head, his face looks too clean shaven, and some streakes of hair or feathers sticking out the back of the skull would look cool too.
but these are all slight things, the design works without them. good work.

i like the concept and the colours. very nice. that gun looks like it could do some damage.
on the anatomical side, his upper arms appear to be different lengths (to me) the rear one looks longer than the front. also the rear leg/thign seems pushed out of place. I'm not sure how to explain it clearly... if you follow down the leg where the bone would be the hip wouldn't be in the right spot.

I can't do anything else than add my voice to the background noise:
A really Great picture!
I can't really see anything wrong after reading your comments, just that the legs are short as other ppl already said.
The only thing I wonderd about was how he aims with those fangs sticking out in front of his face?
Or is it a mask that he camoflauges himself with?
That and where he keeps his ammo and toiletries? Maybe he could have some pouch or something to solve that?:D

Ah yea awesome crits guys this is why I joined ConceptArt.
JNorish, Yaseck - Thanks guys!
Endregan - yea seems people think the gun is a bit TOO outrageous. I did want it to be a monster rifle, but I'll add making it smaller to my list of tweaks :)
Ty - whut up gdawg. Yea when I was drawing the mask I also noticed it didnt go well. That's why I tried adding the warpaint. He can see out of it though - you can't tell from this angle, but the whole front is basically a big hole for the animals nose; it's based on a lion's skull.

I agree with you about the rifle looking too much like an AK, I really was trying to get away from that; oh well more tweaking!
I think your assessment is right, he's getting there, thanks for the vote of confidence that it'll end up cool!
Android - Thanks much, you hit it dead on, he's definitely missing some dirt and wear and tear. I also like the idea of patchwork hides. Glad to hear you like the design :)!
Trollboy - You caught me  I noticed the leg was sort of wonky halfway through and tried to fix but.. eeh. Curses!
Zaphod - Thanks man. Another good idea with the bag. Any ideas for a cool utility satchel type thing?
