:right: CLEARLY DESIGNATE YOUR FINAL.
:right: DESCRIPTIONS ARE NOT NEEDED.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH.
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
FAT, GREASY, PIZZA MUNCHING 35 YEAR OLD GAMER
Who lives in his parent's basement playing WoW all day long and his online character is a sexy looking night elf archer
Thanks to darth massacre for this lovely topic :D
February 5th, 2006, 01:16 AM
The topic is interesting... but I wish it was just "hardcore gamer" and not such a specific type of gamer. I can easily see some great designs with a really wiry guy bent over the keyboard, or even something Lain esque with her wire strewn rooms.
February 5th, 2006, 01:21 AM
I agree. I would rather see the topic be "hardcore isolated from society type gamer" with no restrictions on age, gender and weight. It's not that a fat 35 year old gamer can't be interesting, but I can't really picture all of us bringing something new and unique to the table with our entries. Maybe I'm just not being creative enough... I donno.
February 5th, 2006, 01:56 AM
Great topic and a good challenge. I might have to find some time for this one.
If your in this industry or want to be, get used to having restrictions. Think of this as a job, would you cry to your boss because something is more challenging then you would like it to be? I have a feeling if you did, you'd soon be filling out the application form for the local McDonalds. Suck it up princess!
February 5th, 2006, 03:27 AM
Maybe I'm just not being creative enough... I donno.
Maybe you're not starting to have fun yet. :teeth:
February 5th, 2006, 09:16 AM
romance has the wurd, guys. nothing will get you a "thanks but no thanks" faster than telling an AD up front that his idea sucks and yours is better. better approach is to nail the crap out the assignment and then put down a few of your own gems and humbly, politely mention that you had other ideas that might be worth considering. OK, maybe a bit overstated but not much. you really gotta work within the brief even when it doesn't appeal much.
February 5th, 2006, 11:46 AM
Trouble with this one is coming up with something new, the comic store guy on the simsons is a cultural icon at this point. so th challenge is to get around it. we all know this guy
February 5th, 2006, 12:25 PM
Romance, Masque: I do believe both Bammer and I know this. But we also have this sneaking suspicion that this thread isn't our employer... and that although we do this for practice, we also do this for fun.
February 5th, 2006, 12:28 PM
well, if sticking to the brief isn't fun, then you have the choice to skip this round. or not, as you wish. 's all good :)
February 5th, 2006, 12:36 PM
I guess I'll throw in my two cents, romance, masque, well spoken. (Although it pains me to admit it :)) While it can't be said for everyone, this is practice not only for talent but for working within contraints, so for those to whom it applies, it helps doubly.
The trick is to "see some really great designs" with the posted topic. Sometimes that's talent. Apologies if I'm soapboxing, but I just came off of a week where exactly this applied, so...
February 5th, 2006, 01:32 PM
February 6th, 2006, 11:22 PM
We have a topic suggestion thread somewhere right? For the inevitable nay-sayers on any given topic, that thread's for you. Clearly this fun isn't above revisiting familiar themes so get posting there too. Also, if you have a sudden bolt of inspiration because of what sprang to mind from these topics, by all means paint it up and lay it on us in the main forums!
February 7th, 2006, 11:45 AM
update, and Im done
I kind of like the challenge of doing a subject i don't care for. Makes me tackle the problem of making it into a subject I do care for. I usually apply some sort of fantasy element, but thats just me.
February 7th, 2006, 02:40 PM
haha should be a good one to watch, i believe the class is Hunter in-game though.
February 7th, 2006, 06:25 PM
i'll just upload some pictures of myself for reference...or not :P
February 7th, 2006, 06:58 PM
Hmmm let see what I can pull together, ha!:teeth:
February 7th, 2006, 07:08 PM
Cool topic - working on it. Gonna try harder to meet the actual demands of the topic, than I did with Nancy Goodaim - even though she was my first CHOW :D
This time I'll focus more on character than render, although once the character is established, the render gets the focus. Good luck everyone!
Of course, most of the time... luck has nothing to do with it [:D]
February 7th, 2006, 07:09 PM
This seems to be a real popular one hehe. Maybe I'll put something together later.
February 7th, 2006, 09:58 PM
It's not that a fat 35 year old gamer can't be interesting, but I can't really picture all of us bringing something new and unique to the table with our entries. Maybe I'm just not being creative enough... I donno.
Theyre right, you cant just come in here and tell people how to do things; of all, I think Im the one that learnt that the hard way. But we cannot go from place to place saying what we would like things to be, sucks, but if nobody told ya that life sucks at times, then here it is.
February 7th, 2006, 10:44 PM
so far..in spite of all the discussion, Im winning this One! yay me. (only actual entry)
it wasn't so hard!
February 7th, 2006, 11:45 PM
Theyre right, you cant just come in here and tell people how to do things
February 8th, 2006, 12:29 AM
I truly am.
Over the past few months of running the CHOW, the one thing that I've noticed is that people pretty well like one topic and one topic only:
Now. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm married to one, so I can understand the attraction.
However, this is *not* the HCoW (Hot Chick of the Week). This *IS* the CHOW (Character of the Week). That means character studies. Part of the fundamental idea behind this particular activity is that when a topic is presented, it includes a bit of a description. I come up with the character description, or pull one from the suggestion thread, and we all do it together and vote on the one the one that we like the most. Preferably the one that hits closest to the description.
At least in theory.
However; I've heard more times than I care to count that you can't dictate a description to a bunch of artists and end up with anything but the same basic thing from everyone.
For those nay sayers in particular, I suggest you go take a look at CHOW #1. We had a very tight description, and over 75 unique and jaw dropping entries.
The trouble here is that I've gone soft on you blokes. You've wimped out. I thought I was being nice, and letting things hang a little bit here and there with the descriptions.
No more. We're back to tight illos descriptions next week.
:right: Pay attention here: If the submitted illustration does not meet the description, it will not go to poll. Simply put, that means that if I look at the picture, and then look at the description, and they don't match somehow, no show.
I'm tired of the pissin' and moaning, and I'm not here to babysit anyone. The underpinning concept of this activity is to get people used to dealing with an Art Director.
Hi. I'm now the art director from hell :needle: Consider the Poll your payment (in liue of real cash).
If you enter, do something to the best of your ability. Since I'm going to be a bit of a hard ass, I suspect that we'll have a few less entries from here on out. I'll do my best to provide feedback on the ones that make it to poll. But if I don't, well, AD's don't always tell you why they do or don't do something. It's all part of the game.
Love and kisses,
PS - Oh, and if a topic doesn't suit your particular sensibilites, hang around a week or so. I'm postive one will. But it's all about pushing yourself, not picking and choosing.
February 8th, 2006, 01:27 AM
I think the topic is great. I think CHOW has been great so far. A good mix of eye candy and pure character design. Some topics are fun, others require much thought and research. A good balance.
Keep it up!
February 8th, 2006, 01:59 AM
EDIT: FINAL IMAGE
Special thanks to my buddy, who happens to use the Night Elf Hunter class LOL....and no this image isn't based on him. He's got a flagpole figure and is a clean freak. Don't forget the headset folks....real WoW players use Teamspeak.
As Oreg said....we've had a big proportion of hot chick topics in ChOW so why not some disgusting character? I think the main thing is to have fun. I dunno, every CHOW I've taken part in was fun for me....the variety gives me something to think about and allows me to do things I wouldn't normally explore on my own. I think I've gotten a total of 2 votes for about 5 or 6 ChOW I've entered so far....but who gives a shit...I'm here to draw and enjoy the process.
You can't be creative if you don't enjoy what you do.
Edit: i'd really love to see PoshSpice give this one a go.
February 8th, 2006, 02:15 AM
Final (sadly no more time left...):
February 8th, 2006, 03:03 AM
lol how come everyones characters so far look like carbon copys lol??
February 8th, 2006, 03:07 AM
I think 'virgin' needs to be added to the character description:tihi:
February 8th, 2006, 12:58 PM
LOL Simonl, very nice. That's gonna be one hideous nerd.
Thankfully I wasn't eating while scrolling this thread.
February 8th, 2006, 03:43 PM
Its funny the idea that I had is in the realm of the same thing, LOL, now I am going to have to put more though into it! hmmm....:muscle:
February 8th, 2006, 06:14 PM
A very quick sketch, just to get in there! Hopefully I'll get a bit more time on it. I think my gamer is still living in the 90's! I definitely feel we're all headed in a similar direction here... (there's a gauntlet laid down...)!
Edit: Ooops! I missed the word 'FAT'! Sorry Oregano... please don't hurt me! ;)
February 8th, 2006, 07:21 PM
aw he's sorta fat, don't forget the greasy and pizza....;)
February 8th, 2006, 08:03 PM
@Poshspice - Excellent. I've always wanted to see you do an un-hot character.
February 8th, 2006, 09:31 PM
I'm tired of the pissin' and moaning, and I'm not here to babysit anyone.
You're hell right Oreg; and since you actually lent me a hand by not banning me. I'm all the way behind ya. What kind of worker tells the boss how to do things? After all, a good boss was a good worker.
And Firefly I dont know if you grew up in a barn, but decent people do not come to a place and tell others what to do.
Cheers, nice work everone.
February 9th, 2006, 03:44 AM
February 9th, 2006, 03:55 AM
Thats great Broken Spirit. I'm sure that 'treasure trail' of hair goes straight to his chin. ;)
February 9th, 2006, 04:09 AM
Thanks rob, I'm glad you approve. I'll try to work on some areas a bit more before saturday :)
February 9th, 2006, 06:03 AM
Heya, heres a WIP, just noticed the lighting on his right arm is WAY out of whack! Got my basic feel and colours now just got to do corrections and detail it!
Cheers guys, hopefully this round will pick up.
Also I'm glad the breifs will be tight, I havent really worked with an art director for illustration and working to a proper brief, trying to get it right and stuff, so I get that here at concept art.
Ok been a long day at work and I'm dead tired, so heres my final for tommorrows deadline, not alot of difference.
Newman: Sweet work man, love the helmet!
Chuck, mate: Wow, slick work for a WIP!!
February 9th, 2006, 06:17 AM
The topic makes me think of the comic book guy from the Simpsons.
February 9th, 2006, 07:08 AM
very nice entries so far.
matias - yours just cracked me up! :) mainly because of the mother in the dark there, looking at her hopeless son, i can see her shaking her head like so:
plus the guy is just pure nerd. pure repugnant nerd.
February 9th, 2006, 09:18 AM
i spent quite a while rendering this up nice, but then bloody photoshop crashed on me! i can't be arsed doing it all over again, so this is going to have to count as my final.
the great white hunter returns from a supply gathering mission:
February 9th, 2006, 09:25 AM
hehehheeh newman - that is classic
the helmet and sword are priceless.
February 9th, 2006, 10:01 AM
sorry for interrupting, but we will start a new project linking the weekly activities to one campaign, for more info go here:
February 9th, 2006, 10:32 AM
Chow - 16: 35 Year Old Gamer
this is a rough for our boy.
but since i don`t think i`ll have time to post
a final entry (damn those busy busy days..),
this is all there`s gonna be i`m affraid.
if no one minds, and if it`s alright with Oregano -
it`ll be nice if you take it to the poll.
if it`s too sketchy and not finished enough in your opinion - then don`t.
it`s all good.
February 9th, 2006, 10:41 AM
This whole thread is cracking me up, truly...I KNOW these guys. Heck, I'm married to one.....I wish I'd had time to take it on. I've got a living, breathing reference in the same house....
February 9th, 2006, 10:49 AM
chuck, your "sketchy" is so tight it rox the sox off most "finished" stuff! love the guy's focus on the vidgame action -- been there, done that ;)
February 9th, 2006, 10:56 AM
I'm visiting the forum regular for a long time now and this is my first post on CA at all.
I hope it's not a wrong decision to post in this section first :[
However - Thank you CA for limitless inspiration and incitation. I love you, guys
Ok, enough of the yak! Here's my entry for Chow#16:
Done with mouse :dead:
Not everything finished yet, but I don't have time and power for more.
I also have an animated WIP if someone is (not) interessted in.
Simonl - this is ingenious. I redid the face when I saw yours...
Poshspice + VirusArtist - amazing sketches!
newman - don't worry about the crash. It's awesome anyway!
Chuck - you take part on any activity here, heh?! ...and always with great work.... Unbelievable.
EDIT: cleaned up a bit
EDIT2: ok, did "something to his left foot" ;) (It's my final now!) - thx GreyBelly
February 9th, 2006, 11:04 AM
thanks a bunch dude. :) glad it`s getting a good response.
black adam -
hey....what i`m gonna do? sit idle by while people here BOMB these threads with insane art work? hell no.
i want piece of the action,
and i ain`t being left behind!
February 9th, 2006, 11:16 AM
newman----made me laugh. thanks. I know that guy..he's sweet and hopeless I think he might be one of my brothers. (step brothers).
Simon --that guy is creepy.
dreamseer-- you of the female persuasion too? PM if you like, it gets lonely in here..I think this is mostly guy world though you can't actually tell from the names.
February 9th, 2006, 01:11 PM
Don't wanna rain on anyone's parade here, but since the Nancy thread has somewhat concluded that we steer each other back on track or something, I feel obliged to say this:
The gamer sits in his parents basement playing World Of Warcraft all day long. World Of Warcraft is a MMORPG for Mac and PC (as far as I'm concerned), and NOT a console game. Maybe one can play it with a joypad (my copy does NOT support it), but it's mainly a mouse/keyboard game.
February 9th, 2006, 02:09 PM
greybelly: Hey, i was gonna say that!
newman: yours is my favorite so far. It follows the brief and it's a convincing character.
February 9th, 2006, 02:55 PM
cheers walnut. are you joining in on this one? your last one was great!
iomoon:ta, glad you liked it
blackadam:there's something horribly unsettling about yours-you're getting my vote so far.
c.rocks:i hope your stepbrothers don't wear outfits like that in public!
February 9th, 2006, 02:57 PM
Sorry, I was a bit quick posting that reply :D Although I know your'e all continuously shaping up your initial sketches, here's my "list" :
Black Adam: Great burp! Like the "wrinkles" and texture on his shirt, although the texture does look a bit otherworldly. Maybe you should do something to his left foot - it looks kinda unnatural in that position :)
Chuck, mate: Great drawing, love that face and the action & movement - but as said earlier.. WoW and all.. :D
newman & matias: Beautiful - right on the spot! What a couple of guys! My faves so far :D
bRØk3n_sPiRiT: Nice character - maybe dirty him up a bit :D
Posh: Energetic, crazy dude there! Swap that pad with a mouse and I'm not surprised you'll end up "leading" this round too ;)
Simonl: Great face! Maybe "fill it out" more - he looks a bit flat right now :)
darth: Great sketch - hope to see it finished!
February 9th, 2006, 03:12 PM
Woohoo ! the topic doesn't mention if it is meant to be a male or a female! it can be a 35 year old hot chick gamer!
anyway! sweet topic!
February 9th, 2006, 03:18 PM
I don't know if I'll find time to finish this, but it was so wrong I had to do it.
With unending apologies to Mucha (http://www.worcesterart.org/Mucha/hyacinth.html) . :bashful:
February 9th, 2006, 05:53 PM
:x Really, Nice entries, people!:yayca:
February 9th, 2006, 05:57 PM
love the girl entry I do I really do...... But It does say HIS parents Basement....
and newman--yes, yes they do.....the bag contains beer
February 9th, 2006, 08:42 PM
Dammit! I gotta get in one of these things!!!
February 10th, 2006, 06:49 AM
Well, I think I'm done with this one. About 3 days of discontinuous drawing. Many sketches went into the bin, many changes were made. Should have posted some wip's to show you how it all changed :)
Edit: Fixed the perspective (sorta) and dirtied him up a bit.
Larger version here (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/2820/gamerfinalbig0qc.jpg).
C & C accepted :)
February 10th, 2006, 07:38 AM
Well, this crap's all you're getting folks. I'm off now for the lonely hills of Wallonia.
Greybelly: like the style and his slippers. some funky perspective though.
February 10th, 2006, 07:52 AM
walnut: Thanks for the feedback - funny how one see things AFTER posting and thinking it's finished.. :D
Also got some other unregistered feedback, so I think I'll fix up a few things even tho I labelled it FINAL... (Ooo... bad form, bad form) :D
February 10th, 2006, 08:02 AM
BTW that guy is really a gamer :D Love the t-shirt!
February 10th, 2006, 11:42 AM
and now for something (almost) completely different...
Pencil layout, digital paint (PSCS2)
February 10th, 2006, 02:00 PM
That is awesome! The pathos! The struggle! The humor! My fav so far.
February 10th, 2006, 03:18 PM
Masque - I love it! That's one heck of a basement!
I'm not going to get mine finished, I've got to go away at short notice tonight which has mucked up a few plans. So don't put my scribble forward for the vote Oregano. Cheers!
February 10th, 2006, 03:31 PM
newman - awesome. awesome. awesome!!
chuck, mate - that ponytail is PERFECT. Hilarious!
February 10th, 2006, 04:27 PM
Here's my final. I didn't see any specific date specified, so I thought I'd go slightly into the future.
Gaming 3000 AD. Due to a global addiction to visual entertainment, stimulants, and technology, humans has evolved quicker than expected. With no eyelids, and heavy doses of the worlds largest consumed cash crop, guarana, people stare at computer screens, mesmerized by the virtual worlds that surround them. This poor man, Hubert, is so addicted to the recently released game World Of Warcraft 53, that his GamePac 3000 has to moisten his eyes and feed him. Unfortunately, while humans have evolved so quickly, software hasn't, looks like his Windows OS crashed.
February 10th, 2006, 04:43 PM
thanks, Posh, glad you like :) yeah, i figured this guy's been spoiled rotten by a rich, doting mamasan all his life, hence the megatech playpen, weight problem, and total lack of RW social life. money can't buy ya love, though.
February 10th, 2006, 04:52 PM
money can't buy ya love, though.
Yes it can, but only for a night.
February 10th, 2006, 04:59 PM
Masque....love it, but felt he could be more, y'know...disgusting.
Romance - I really like yours too.
Hey look like its coming together for almost everyone.
February 10th, 2006, 05:15 PM
Yes it can, but only for a night.@ romance: sex != love
with your nick you should know that ;) guess i'm a bit oldfash in that regard.
@ darth: why more disgusting? guy could be a totally anal retentive obsessive/complusive neat freak and still fit the brief. his wasted life is disgusting enough. anyway, i lean toward subtlety. usually. well, sometimes. :P
February 10th, 2006, 06:49 PM
fat gamer daydreaming
February 10th, 2006, 07:38 PM
I realised that I broke one of the CHOW rules by doing a head shot rather than 3/4, so I don't know if this'll go to poll or not. Oh yeah, no pizza in evidence either.
Newton loves his Night Elf. A lot. Something about the way she wiggles her tight, low poly butt when she walks...
(poster by Me)
February 10th, 2006, 10:35 PM
that's wrong on so many levels.
Who cares if it doesn't make it to poll! That's really great! The poster in the background gives a nice touch...even if the description isn't there, we can still get an idea of what's happening.
Hey romance, that's a good idea you got! You're perceptive to notice that no specified time period was given. Way to break from the pack, bud.
February 11th, 2006, 03:53 AM
K peeps, mines finished.
Thanks Darth and theshunzun
Masque - The kids these days... (Bill Cosby voice) :)
Simonl - Congrats! Your entry is beyond gross. :x :tihi:
February 11th, 2006, 06:50 AM
whether your entry will go to poll or not - it keeps the strongest here IMO! :muscle:
February 11th, 2006, 07:04 AM
Wow Romance! Really nice update with the colours! Love it man! Those red-rimmed eyes been gaming 72 hours straight no doubt.
February 11th, 2006, 07:30 AM
Simonl: A disturbing image on a number of levels. got some tech crits. in a couple of places there's some transparency effects happening that seem out of place: intersection of jowls and his right shoulder is a biggie, the edgelight stroke at the hairline another (not so noticeable, though). the lower contour of his right arm at the elbow, is very odd, and seems to intersect the table strangely. and what's growing out the back/top of his head? i only mention these because in my eyes they weaken a strong, well-executed piece.
also the poster's a nice touch, but did you paint it? if not, keep in mind that using others' art in yours in such a fashion is often frowned on to one degree or another due to copyright.
February 11th, 2006, 03:12 PM
Joe Pack lives with his mother and enjoys taking long showers in the guest bathroom with his pin-up world of warcraft night elf poster after waking up past mid-day.
Often, Joe forgets his guilds raid scheduel while soaping up so he taped up a laminated scheduel and wears a watch as to never forget when its time to raid the hallowed core.
Even while showering, Joe eats pizza, drinks soda, and decides what he is going to do in WoW from then till 7am (his bed-time).
February 11th, 2006, 04:56 PM
Thanks for the crit Masque. I was doing about three things at once when I did this update, so missed the transparency stuff.
The poster is by Masamune Shirow, and I am using it without permission. I have now attributed it in the post, which I admit I forgot to do in the first place.
(I have now changed the poster to one of my own.)
February 11th, 2006, 05:09 PM
So, my first submission ever is a WIP that's probably never going to see completion. Not by the deadline, anyway. And it's not so much me attacking the topic and screaming "hey! girls can be losers too!" as me jumping on the opportunity to post a self portrait/career goal.
I was going to be super-cool and oil-pastel it, but I've got too much stuff going on this week. And yeah, the legs are awful. Yay foreshortening...
edit: eek! how do I make them show up?
February 11th, 2006, 05:16 PM
with photo bucket..cut and paste the link theat start [IMG].. that's what I use...works fine
February 11th, 2006, 05:44 PM
ohhhhhh. I was using the "Tag" data. Heh. Many Thanks!
February 11th, 2006, 11:19 PM
Alright! I'm done. Geez I had a late party last night and only started mine at about 4pm (Est) today. I think I forgot to brush my teeth...and I felt a bit like this dude we're working on. I gotta go brush my teeth now.
And I think everyone has their coming along pretty well. I really like quite a few; (NOT in order of preference) Masque, Romance, Chuck, Walnut, SimonL, Newman, BlackAdam, Virus, greybelly and Matias....I feel there'll be more to come, considering how many more entries usually pile in at about 12am.
Side note: My WoW playing buddy says that its impossible to play WoW on a gamepad. Not only because its not supported...but impossible.
February 11th, 2006, 11:54 PM
February 12th, 2006, 12:04 AM
HOw much longer do I have??
I should have something by prolly by 12 tonite my time, maybe later! peace out!
February 12th, 2006, 12:12 AM
