FAT, GREASY, PIZZA MUNCHING 35 YEAR OLD GAMER

Thanks to darth massacre for this lovely topic :D

The topic is interesting... but I wish it was just "hardcore gamer" and not such a specific type of gamer. I can easily see some great designs with a really wiry guy bent over the keyboard, or even something Lain esque with her wire strewn rooms.
Bammer
February 5th, 2006, 12:21 AM
I agree. I would rather see the topic be "hardcore isolated from society type gamer" with no restrictions on age, gender and weight. It's not that a fat 35 year old gamer can't be interesting, but I can't really picture all of us bringing something new and unique to the table with our entries. Maybe I'm just not being creative enough... I donno.

February 5th, 2006, 12:56 AM
Great topic and a good challenge. I might have to find some time for this one.
If your in this industry or want to be, get used to having restrictions. Think of this as a job, would you cry to your boss because something is more challenging then you would like it to be? I have a feeling if you did, you'd soon be filling out the application form for the local McDonalds. Suck it up princess!

romance has the wurd, guys. nothing will get you a "thanks but no thanks" faster than telling an AD up front that his idea sucks and yours is better. better approach is to nail the crap out the assignment and then put down a few of your own gems and humbly, politely mention that you had other ideas that might be worth considering. OK, maybe a bit overstated but not much. you really gotta work within the brief even when it doesn't appeal much.

Trouble with this one is coming up with something new, the comic store guy on the simsons is a cultural icon at this point. so th challenge is to get around it. we all know this guy

Romance, Masque: I do believe both Bammer and I know this. But we also have this sneaking suspicion that this thread isn't our employer... and that although we do this for practice, we also do this for fun.

well, if sticking to the brief isn't fun, then you have the choice to skip this round. or not, as you wish. 's all good :)

I guess I'll throw in my two cents, romance, masque, well spoken. (Although it pains me to admit it :)) While it can't be said for everyone, this is practice not only for talent but for working within contraints, so for those to whom it applies, it helps doubly.
The trick is to "see some really great designs" with the posted topic. Sometimes that's talent. Apologies if I'm soapboxing, but I just came off of a week where exactly this applied, so...

We have a topic suggestion thread somewhere right? For the inevitable nay-sayers on any given topic, that thread's for you. Clearly this fun isn't above revisiting familiar themes so get posting there too. Also, if you have a sudden bolt of inspiration because of what sprang to mind from these topics, by all means paint it up and lay it on us in the main forums!

Cool topic - working on it. Gonna try harder to meet the actual demands of the topic, than I did with Nancy Goodaim - even though she was my first CHOW :D
This time I'll focus more on character than render, although once the character is established, the render gets the focus. Good luck everyone!

Of course, most of the time... luck has nothing to do with it [:D]

Theyre right, you cant just come in here and tell people how to do things; of all, I think Im the one that learnt that the hard way. But we cannot go from place to place saying what we would like things to be, sucks, but if nobody told ya that life sucks at times, then here it is.

S.C. Watson
February 7th, 2006, 11:29 PM
I'm amazed.
I truly am.
Over the past few months of running the CHOW, the one thing that I've noticed is that people pretty well like one topic and one topic only:
Hot Chicks.
Now. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm married to one, so I can understand the attraction.
However, this is *not* the HCoW (Hot Chick of the Week). This *IS* the CHOW (Character of the Week). That means character studies. Part of the fundamental idea behind this particular activity is that when a topic is presented, it includes a bit of a description. I come up with the character description, or pull one from the suggestion thread, and we all do it together and vote on the one the one that we like the most. Preferably the one that hits closest to the description.
At least in theory.
However; I've heard more times than I care to count that you can't dictate a description to a bunch of artists and end up with anything but the same basic thing from everyone.
For those nay sayers in particular, I suggest you go take a look at CHOW #1. We had a very tight description, and over 75 unique and jaw dropping entries.
The trouble here is that I've gone soft on you blokes. You've wimped out. I thought I was being nice, and letting things hang a little bit here and there with the descriptions.
No more. We're back to tight illos descriptions next week.
:right: Pay attention here: If the submitted illustration does not meet the description, it will not go to poll. Simply put, that means that if I look at the picture, and then look at the description, and they don't match somehow, no show.
I'm tired of the pissin' and moaning, and I'm not here to babysit anyone. The underpinning concept of this activity is to get people used to dealing with an Art Director.
Hi. I'm now the art director from hell :needle: Consider the Poll your payment (in liue of real cash).
If you enter, do something to the best of your ability. Since I'm going to be a bit of a hard ass, I suspect that we'll have a few less entries from here on out. I'll do my best to provide feedback on the ones that make it to poll. But if I don't, well, AD's don't always tell you why they do or don't do something. It's all part of the game.
Love and kisses,
~Oreg.
PS - Oh, and if a topic doesn't suit your particular sensibilites, hang around a week or so. I'm postive one will. But it's all about pushing yourself, not picking and choosing.
StenP
February 8th, 2006, 12:27 AM
Go Oregano!
I think the topic is great. I think CHOW has been great so far. A good mix of eye candy and pure character design. Some topics are fun, others require much thought and research. A good balance.
Keep it up!

EDIT: FINAL IMAGE
http://www.massivebias.com/sketchbook/35gamer.jpg
Special thanks to my buddy, who happens to use the Night Elf Hunter class LOL....and no this image isn't based on him. He's got a flagpole figure and is a clean freak. Don't forget the headset folks....real WoW players use Teamspeak.
As Oreg said....we've had a big proportion of hot chick topics in ChOW so why not some disgusting character? I think the main thing is to have fun. I dunno, every CHOW I've taken part in was fun for me....the variety gives me something to think about and allows me to do things I wouldn't normally explore on my own. I think I've gotten a total of 2 votes for about 5 or 6 ChOW I've entered so far....but who gives a shit...I'm here to draw and enjoy the process.
You can't be creative if you don't enjoy what you do.
Edit: i'd really love to see PoshSpice give this one a go.

Don't wanna rain on anyone's parade here, but since the Nancy thread has somewhat concluded that we steer each other back on track or something, I feel obliged to say this:
The gamer sits in his parents basement playing World Of Warcraft all day long. World Of Warcraft is a MMORPG for Mac and PC (as far as I'm concerned), and NOT a console game. Maybe one can play it with a joypad (my copy does NOT support it), but it's mainly a mouse/keyboard game.

Sorry, I was a bit quick posting that reply :D Although I know your'e all continuously shaping up your initial sketches, here's my "list" :
Black Adam: Great burp! Like the "wrinkles" and texture on his shirt, although the texture does look a bit otherworldly. Maybe you should do something to his left foot - it looks kinda unnatural in that position :)
Chuck, mate: Great drawing, love that face and the action & movement - but as said earlier.. WoW and all.. :D
newman & matias: Beautiful - right on the spot! What a couple of guys! My faves so far :D
bRØk3n_sPiRiT: Nice character - maybe dirty him up a bit :D
Posh: Energetic, crazy dude there! Swap that pad with a mouse and I'm not surprised you'll end up "leading" this round too ;)

darth: Great sketch - hope to see it finished!

Gaming 3000 AD. Due to a global addiction to visual entertainment, stimulants, and technology, humans has evolved quicker than expected. With no eyelids, and heavy doses of the worlds largest consumed cash crop, guarana, people stare at computer screens, mesmerized by the virtual worlds that surround them. This poor man, Hubert, is so addicted to the recently released game World Of Warcraft 53, that his GamePac 3000 has to moisten his eyes and feed him. Unfortunately, while humans have evolved so quickly, software hasn't, looks like his Windows OS crashed.

Simonl: A disturbing image on a number of levels. got some tech crits. in a couple of places there's some transparency effects happening that seem out of place: intersection of jowls and his right shoulder is a biggie, the edgelight stroke at the hairline another (not so noticeable, though). the lower contour of his right arm at the elbow, is very odd, and seems to intersect the table strangely. and what's growing out the back/top of his head? i only mention these because in my eyes they weaken a strong, well-executed piece.
also the poster's a nice touch, but did you paint it? if not, keep in mind that using others' art in yours in such a fashion is often frowned on to one degree or another due to copyright.

Joe Pack lives with his mother and enjoys taking long showers in the guest bathroom with his pin-up world of warcraft night elf poster after waking up past mid-day.
Often, Joe forgets his guilds raid scheduel while soaping up so he taped up a laminated scheduel and wears a watch as to never forget when its time to raid the hallowed core.
Even while showering, Joe eats pizza, drinks soda, and decides what he is going to do in WoW from then till 7am (his bed-time).

Thanks for the crit Masque. I was doing about three things at once when I did this update, so missed the transparency stuff.
The poster is by Masamune Shirow, and I am using it without permission. I have now attributed it in the post, which I admit I forgot to do in the first place.
(I have now changed the poster to one of my own.)

So, my first submission ever is a WIP that's probably never going to see completion. Not by the deadline, anyway. And it's not so much me attacking the topic and screaming "hey! girls can be losers too!" as me jumping on the opportunity to post a self portrait/career goal.

I was going to be super-cool and oil-pastel it, but I've got too much stuff going on this week. And yeah, the legs are awful. Yay foreshortening...
edit: eek! how do I make them show up?

Alright! I'm done. Geez I had a late party last night and only started mine at about 4pm (Est) today. I think I forgot to brush my teeth...and I felt a bit like this dude we're working on. I gotta go brush my teeth now.
And I think everyone has their coming along pretty well. I really like quite a few; (NOT in order of preference) Masque, Romance, Chuck, Walnut, SimonL, Newman, BlackAdam, Virus, greybelly and Matias....I feel there'll be more to come, considering how many more entries usually pile in at about 12am.
Side note: My WoW playing buddy says that its impossible to play WoW on a gamepad. Not only because its not supported...but impossible.
