View Full Version : Fear and Loathing in Paul's Sketchbook

I've been trained as an illustrator and worked as a character artist on one published game so far. Unfortunately, I've had a love-hate relationship with art ever since high school, where it became clear that I needed to draw everyday if I was to be any good.
At the moment I'm working part-time as a programmer building applications for the games industry, but I'm really itching to draw again. As such, my initial post is a purging of work from 2-3 years ago that has been my shitty portfolio for too long. The work isn't bad, I've just been retarding my own progression by thinking I can't get any better than those halcyon days (and they really weren't that great).
My portfolio has a distinct lack of well, everything, but especially environments. I have an irrational fear of drawing environments, a phobia that has plagued me since my first day at university. Don't ask me how I managed to pass illustration without doing any landscapes or environments, but I did.
Anyhow, wish me luck on my journey. It will be eye-opening, no doubt.
Cheers,
Paul.

I really like the first picture up there, the boxer fella. He reminds me of the countless afternoons I spent playing Mike Tysons: Punch Out back in the NES days.

Ace: Cheers dude, appreciate the comments. Creatures seems to be my thing.
Darktwin: Thanks man, I think I will definitely keep posting. The initial fear of putting work out there is gone now.
Sepulverture: It's actually a warped version of Ali. The under drawing was done in two minutes with a marker, and then I just worked from photo reference. I never finished the painting, as you can see it needs a lot of work in the details, but I just want to move on and get to some new painting.

Yo Paul, thanks for the info today, just thought I'd stop by and give my support for your sketchbook and growth.
Some interesting work, but one thing I will definitely after a long haitus is to get back into your serious art by learning (or possibly relearning) the human anatomy. The human anatomy, with its complexity will force you to develop a new mindset as well as a fundamental basis for good realistic character design.
Understanding how the body works, how it melds together to create a dynamic unified system is no easy undertaking and sorts the men from the boys.
I'll talk to you Sunday.
