looking at the value study, it turned out sorta crappy :-/ It looks pretty close from a distance as the pencil strokes sort of disappear (done mostly in charcoal pencil and compressed charcoal, a little bit of vine charcoal and some conte crayon). I think becaues it was sort of leaning backwards when i took the picture of it adds a bit of distortion. I wish i had done better.

Cool stuff, I like the car study. Some really nice figures too. I'm like you, never really had a formal education on art until now haha...I'm still in highschool (junior) and I'm in the Art Instruction School, if you've ever heard of it. I like it, but I seldom have time because of school and work and well doin my own art thing.
But...keep it comin'!

Love those hands... I can really feel the form in them. Your faces need some help. Try and think of them the same way you handled the hands, its just shapes in space, not some magical conglomoration of lines like we tend to think. Keep drawing & keep posting.
Also, first couple of posts are a little big, might want to scale them down a touch.

not very pleased with this one. not a very good sense of depth or texture. it was a construction site somewhere downtown
hands and feet
Inkwash stuff
not pleased with the first one.
these are all 600x~800. should i make them smaller for your viewing pleasure?
thanks for any input.

Out of all the drawings, I really like that first hand you drew, and the set of dominos (something about the smoothness of them).

started figure drawing last week. I've had some fun sketching my friends and such.
I always look forward to criticisms. I know a few things and spots that i need to work on. Faces at odd angles still throw me off, as well as getting people's features to look like them. Most of these don't look a whole lot like the actual people.

I really like the hands in the first post. The self-portrait was thr weakest of the bunch. I noticed that the values in the study of the car didn't relate to each other in all areas...particularly the hood and the shadow in front of it.
Your figures have def. improved and you'll notice that you only get better with practice. Lots of practice. I went through a two week period where I concentrated on drawing ppl's faces on the subway/streetcar/coffee shop...whereever I was.

I still have a ways to go but carry a sketchbook around and practice whenever you can!
ps....maybe save your img's in a smaller size?

I think i need a little help with a piece due for my fundamentals of drawing class. I had to take the pictures with a crappy 2.0 Megapixel camera, so . . . yeah.

we were supposed to "research" an artist, basically looking at what they drew/painted and how they drew it, and immitate it. I chose michaelangelo, i'm not real sure i've been successful. I think i just might need to go a little slower and be more detailed. or something. The figures on the right are not as light as the picture makes them appear.
any suggestions as to how i might get a better image? i'm going to borrow my friend's camera tonight i guess.

Your line work is pretty good, and your actual drawing of your objects is well done, you just need to really work on your shading. Your values are off on your value studies and on your most recent Michaeangelo study. Just try and practice your shading some more and work it in with those good line skills.
DR_Inferno

on the 'michaelangelo' bit, what would you say about the values looks off? i know something is wrong, but i'm not quite sure what the trouble spots are and what i can do to fix it.

nice stuff man, but most of your lifedrawings are extremly suffering under this VERY messy "rendering" and scribbeled lines, loose does not mean messy, so keep things clean and your work will improve imensly witch just one step! Moreover I would say that you should keep this "looseness" away from your studies, do them carefully so that you can learn as much as possible in a very short time!
So keep at it man, want see more updates!

The CD turned out a little funky in this. I suppose my ellipses and reflective surfaces are not exactly strong. everything was supposed to be sitting on a glass plate, but i couldn't focus on what was being reflected enough (there was some reflection from the TV and some from exterior lighting)
what can i do to keep my shading from looking so grainy?

Looking good !
But be a bit more accurate with your line, make it really hard to notice, so you can work more with the values.
Keep posting !!

some stuff i did last night. I'm going to work on faces for the rest of the week, i think. Mine always end up looking so flat.
off to the mall to apply for jobs and sketch! :\
ugh! i think i need a better scanner. they don't look nearly that grainy in the book

> a page that started as some ideas for a DSG that i didn't finish

ugh. car pic isn't coming out nicely :-/ it doesn't look that bad

ok. now this is the new stuff. I rather like the first one -- which is odd. and the last one was sort of some composition brainstorming for a larger hand piece i'd like to try.
the girl is a photoref from my computer :o: i think it looks better in person, the head doesn't seem quite as oblong, but it's another one that turned out nicely imo. of course, it could be better.

stuff i did this weekend.
tried the pen + blue pencil thing again. I was overzealous withe the pencil and sort of ruined her face. now she looks a little derranged. well, the overlarge head doesn't help either.
edit: lol. looking at it on screen i realize how much i fvcked the girl-pic up. eyes are crooked, bad spacing of said eyes, wacked out anatomy in the shoulder area. she looks old, worn, and young at the same time! how disconcerting. :'( i guess i really kinda suck at this.

Well, i went to the library last week (lol, i'm clearly not drawing every day) and picked up some figure drawing books. One of bridgeman's, a book of anatomical diagrams, and one on figure drawing during the high renaissance.
the way bridgeman draws is so intoxicating.

one last one. Not such greatness here. oh, and i did "auto levels" on some of these. i've been sketching in B and 2B, but it always seems to leave such a light mark. i tried a bit in 3B and liked it better, i guess i'll stick with that.

some more. i rather like the skull. yes it could be better, but it certainly isn't bad. sadly, from photo ref.
probably should have autoadjusted some of these. turned out a little light.

hey man, nice sketchbook :) I like all the things you've been doing, especially the hands; really nice gestural feel to em. you also have a nice line, seems confident.. don't feel bad about doing things from photo ref., it's a nice way to build up images as well as to practice in general. I would suggest, though, doing a longer drawings of an object or of a still life; also I'm a big advocate of doing strictly tonal drawings (only focus on the tones in an object, no linework), really helps in the way of patience (something you may not need, but I certainly do at times lol) and control over a medium. again nice sketchbook, keep at it :)

WHY can't i do a good sketch page a day. I go through 3 or 4 day bursts of daily drawing, then i'll lapse for almost a week.
here's the nominal stuff i've done since the last update.

October 19th, 2006, 05:20 PM
holy crap. 2 updates in 1 week? i must clearly not be studying.
apparently, i don't know how to use conte. the self portraits just turned out poor. i'm going to keep working on the still life. at first i was a little unsure of how to draw black plastic with a shadow on it, but it turned out allright. except that it doesn't really look like plastic. y'know. shiney and such.
thanks for stopping by.
