ROUND #15

:right: PLEASE CONSOLIDATE YOUR WIPS AND FINALS INTO YOUR FIRST POST.

:right: CLEARLY DESIGNATE YOUR FINAL.

:right: DESCRIPTIONS ARE NOT NEEDED.

-------------------------
DEADLINE
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH.
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------

NANCY GOODAIM, SPACE HEROINE

Nancy Goodaim, Space Heroine and Flying Ace. Set in 2010 as seen from 1950. Nancy Goodaim saves Danny Seeker, the perky reporter from the Galaxy Daily, and the universe, from the clutches of Tal Largethought, the evil scientist and his nasty sidekick Kraw the Cruel in weekly episodal installments.

Character needs to be larger than life, but not comical. Think Buck Rogers style pulp science fiction heroine. Another reference might include Captain Franky Cook from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Angelina Jolie’s Character).

thanks to Undertow and Dogfood.

Heh, first thing than came into my mind, even before the "seen from 1950" blurb was "Atomic Betty".

If I can pull some extra hours to work on this, I'll have to work my ass off not to make another Atomic Betty now >_<

WIPin' and Placeholdin'...

Sketch (http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/Corrick/Nancy1.jpg)

The laser gun wasn't working at all so I swapped it for a good old fashioned reliable model 1911. I figure it'll be around in 2010, and the juxtaposition between getting shot at by laser beams and shooting back with a .45 was kinda funny.

obviously my kind of drawing in this instance isnt as ... good.. as everyone elses.. as in quality wise.. but i feel my idea was good.. even tho i didnt finish the colouring quite to my liking, the actual positioning of everything is ... ok. just ok. anyway this is my first time submitting a character, so i hope she's up to scratch for this kind of thing. thanks for the idea.
**updating image so old one wont show. if you want to see the old one, please view it here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/28432189/ thanks ;)
i hope you all like. ... well some anyway.

EDIT:
Ok.. someone said, below this post, that i could work more on it and submit a better piece.. since i started here, i thought this was like the Daily sketch group.. oopsie.. this is for a week, i didnt realise.. haha.. anyway thanks for letting me know ;) you're a gem.

First study... Extreme perspective giving me a bit of a prob, have to check it again when I get home tonight....

Ok, new concept time. Sorry for the bad pic, gotta get me a light table or scanner or something. This is so much fun. It's like art school, but with assignments that are awesome! I'd keep working on it tonight, but I'm supposed to do the dishes before bed. *sigh* Any comments left tonight will make my day easier in the morning. Thanks guys!

Cleaned the image up with a good scan, and I'm going to *try* my hand at painter, since I don't have time to pick up my watercolors from my sis.
Here's hoping....

Later: Ok, so no using painter for me. Funny thing, when I do design and layout all day on the computer I have no urge to do art on it! Here's an updated drawing featuring our man Danny. I wanted him to look meek but still square jawed. You know how the nerdy girls are allways really hot in this genre once they "let their hair down?" Well, I figure it's the same way for Dan... in one of these episodes he'll get his shirt ripped off and the audience will awe and ooh as he takes off the glasses and finally stands up for himself...http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/nathonicus/Art%20Pieces/nancyagain.jpg

Aboritve attempts at watercolors and painter have pushed me over the edge. Last night I slapped my drawing on a board with some acyrillic medium and I'll just paint the *****ing thing, oil fumes be damned! I live in a small apt. w/ inadequate ventilation, so the next time I post I might have a few less brain cells, but at least it will be in color.... One good side effect of this all is that I cleaned and reorganized my art room, so even if I don't get a picture out of this, at least I've got that going for me...

Still very much work in progress. Coming soon to a WIP thread near you!

Astarsia - there's still plenty of time. Put some more effort into your piece. You say you're happy with the composition, then leave it. But if you're unhappy with the coloring, why not have another go at it.
Don't give up - fight for your place among these other pieces.

Corrick
January 31st, 2006, 09:38 PM
Phaethon - I dig the moment, it's workin'. She's hot, aside from her thin left wrist and hand. It's Danny that's a mite off. He's got an overly fleshy area underneath the jaw, maybe trim that off. His face overall seems... flat, or pushed in. Looks like it could use some dimension. His hands could use a little work as well, the web of his thumb would trail off underneath, towards the palm. The whole thing's looking good though, can't wait to see more!

masque
January 31st, 2006, 09:43 PM
@Phaethon -- to me, his left arm looks overly long and in an odd position. maybe trace a "drawn-through" arm to check it? also she seems to be snogging him a bit off center, maybe tilt her head a tad to her left and center the lip-smackin'?

Nice Work!
I love the moody atmosphere and the creative montage of elements. That's really hard to do well and I really like the composition you've created. Lot's of depth too. Good posing and attitude, I really like the gnarly old guy on the right with the light revealing just enough detail to make him out, but not telling the whole story in one breath either. Good work!

Ok..
EDIT:
FINAL
I have to finish it like this.

Not entirely happy with the font, nor the overall composition. Quite satisfied with the style I ended up with, though I'm not sure it completely follows the rules of the topic, or the rules in general :-) I was looking for the bad guy to wear something utterly ugly, like from horror flicks or scifi B-movies. The heroine herself I wanted to be a bit more "modern".

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I came to CA to get better, [i'm originally from dA.. -no mocking pls ppls] and there was a bit of a bad thread from another part of these forums about the other art community i'm with, so i wasnt sure if i should continue, even tho i came here to improve myself and work my fingers off to get my technique properly... so to hear your advice and encouragement is good. that upload was the second one i had done.. but i dont know how i can improve.. i mean the girls face is dirty, so i couldnt do alot with it, excpet highlight a few bits here and there.. But your advice is wonderful, thank you, i will try to use a reference in the next picture i try of a character.. ... mainly because my fingers hurt lol i spent a few hours on my last one doing fire and highlighting and the evil face.. *faint*.. lol

thanks once again..

Thank the merciful heavens! I just realized the deadline for this is Saturday. SATURDAY! HA HA HA! I thought it was tomrorrow!!!

I guess that means I can get some sleep tonight....

Then again, everyone else's is looking so darn good. Cakeypigdog, I really dig your smooth flesh tones against the blue-grey. One crit though is that her facial expressions seems a little indifferent, almost vacant. I think our heroine needs a bigger expression, smirk, determination, something.

Or, in the words of Trevor, maybe I'm a braying jackass!

Can't wait to see them all.

Here's my first stab at a CHOW. Right now it's just a pencil sketch, but I hope to find the time to try a bit of paint in Photoshop before the deadline...tool with the gun a bit more, as well. Back to the era when space exploration meant silver jumpsuits and go-go boots...

hello, nathonicus, I like your WIP very, very much. the pose and glance of the girl is so wonderful. Hope you will keep this intriguing effect to the finish. Very attractive heroine you created. I'm just not sure about her stretched arm, looks a bit too short. Would be great if you work more carefully on it. It is very noticeable. I think. But overall, a beautiful storytelling. I love your image very much so far. and your comment to picture makes me smile :).

Hey, GreyBelly, I think this face a show stopper, and I actually like the pose too, it makes me wonder and wait fro more. And coloring is great, I love this pleasant colors, her skin tone and this green. Looking forward to see full version. She is tough enough and seductive. Doesn't look like in commercial, looks like hot head from the action movie. You can continue to struggle with colors and cloths 9and you should) , but her face is gorgeous and has a RISK written all over her.

Hello, newman, Love your idea very much, so much fun to observe, So he is a bit of a poser too, hehehe, wants some credit for her deed. Wonderful detail to character. So funny! Can't wait to see it finished :).

Howdy Guys :D

Again great stuff all round, but I must admit I'm really loving Corrick's action packed cliff-hanger, great mood and lighting to it too.

@Masque: Great "Pulp Cover" set up which I've been tempted to steal shamelessly, although I was gonna go with "That's Astounding!" as my title ;)

@newman: Shaping up lovely Dude!

@goran: I had a different idea about Nancy, but I really can't fault your draughtsmanship, plus your "old school" villains are fantastic

@Chuck: Again, In awe of the way you draw (even for a WIP)

And then comes walnut

...simply perfect

For what it's worth, here's mine so far, still at the WIP stage and I'm not sure I'll get it finished enough to qualify this week, but I figured I'd share where my brain's going on this one. I'm not entirely happy with it, don't know if I should keep going on this one, or go for the total re-draw??

I'm trying for that "Frazetta" style "swimming cap sci-fi" look?

I'm kind of pissed because I didn't see this topic until late last night before bed. I had to cram and draw this this evening. About 3.5 hrs of design and then to line art. It needs at least another hr of revision and clean up before I'd take it to color but I hope this is considered sufficient for entry as the design is clean enough to read as a sketch. If I wasn't going to Seattle tomorrow I'd be able to finish this but as is, I wont be getting back home until late Saturday evening.. damnit I wish I could finish this one it's such a fun topic. Thanks again Shane for using part of my suggested theme with the 50's sci-fi. Design note; Wally Wood meets my style. Wally Wood is the man.

Wah, thanks guys. Tell the truth, i did have some Flash comics by side to, err, borrow the style a bit.

Dram: Finish yours man. If i'd have let meyself get daunted by the other CHOW participants i wouldn't have even bothered either. Go on, give it your best shot, i command you!
Undertow: hope you get enough time for yours. It's a cool idea and it would be great to see it finished.

At first I wasnt interested in doing this one because it seems really cliche to me. I mean, it seems alot like skycaptain, and if you don't mind me saying skycaptain sucked. I like the setting but it the scope just seemed too narrow.
So I decided theres no harm in takeing the characters/setting in a new direction. I mean, from the 1950s, 2010 is way further then most of their sci-fi went. I went more along the lines of a tough chick, with a super heavy machine gun and a jetpack.:P

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/TheIronShoes/Nancy-Goodame.jpg

Heres a little bit of story I thought up while drawing.

High above the metropolis, center of world trade and industry.
The hot winds rush by as the grim voice of one DR. Largethought crackles over Nancy's communicator.
"I'm calling you out Nancy! Come to my ship and we will end this nonsense, once and for all!"
Nancy responds calm and clear, with a slight grin. "Wouldn't miss it for the world sweetheart."
"You can't be serious!" cried Danny his voice cracking "It could be a trap!"
Nancy looks back at him, while he has been around theres been nothing but trouble. But maybe thats just the way she likes it. "I wouldnt worry about me."
"I... I just don't want anything to happen to you."
"Ha, ya know Dan? I don't want anything to heppen to me either." She smiles at him, "But I'll tell you, It just wouldn't be heroic if I were safe."
With that she blasts off full throtle twords Dr, Largethoughts monolithic fortress. Danny standing alone of the hull of her ship.
"Im pretty sure I love that girl."

PS: I would do some nice color, but im taking off on a snowboarding adventure. So this is my final :)

Chaos rocks - Yours is fine, but you just need to work on your anatomy a bit more, particularly foreshortening, otherwise the design of the character is cool! :) Incidentally, that costume site you recommend is great!

Here's my Nancy. Still a WIP though. The BG is very quick and a bit generic, so I'm going to do some more on it for myself; sort out one or two anatomy issues and her slightly orange face. However that'll have to wait fer now, as I've been ordered to go and do some shopping for my girlfriend! ;) Sorry Oregano, but I think I've made her too sixties looking rather than fifties. It's very derivative, and I'm sure there's loads of stuff out there just like it, but I had fun! Crits very welcome!

Posh, that one is truly amazing. Really love the texture on her suit. And the background? Well, it's not as if she looks malplaced - after all she's a Space Heroine! :-D
Lots of action and movement, and her "cool" smile is just stunning :)

yeah go posh!

i've been watching this one develop and nothing interested me at all until yours. she is a big more 60's but still pretty rad. i really enjoy the beauty mark.
it's a dynamic enought pos that i don't have to complain about putting her right spack in the middle. it has a good feel to to. greta job.

ooofff mr posh spice that is indeed a wonderful little painting! you win :) very inspirational. i wouldn't worry about it all being done before, this chow has been such fun because the subject matter is just so wonderfully cheesy!

Posh....I hate you. Simply beautiful as always man. puttin me to shame. so far you have my vote.

Of course there are some good executions throughout. Walnut, Trevor and Daz, You guys killed it too. Great entries!

My final has been posted on the first page. If anyone wants to take a gander. I found a period piece quite difficult. Dispite all the good references I don't think I quite pulled off the fifties look.

If you went into the early to mid 60's with your designs that's not too bad as there were still very similar design cues in pulp sci-fi at the time. For the guys that decided to go completely out of the genre... um.. google.. images.. oh look.. 50's pulp sci-fi.. cool.

Hey, this is my first ever post! Yay. So, needless to say, this is my first piece of artwork I've posted here. I sketched all week. I came up with about 13 or 14 different ideas, and then scrambled around for the last day trying to get this thing colored. Hope ya'll like it. C&C are of course welcome.
