hello, i'm new to drawing and painting, and it seems the only way i can get an acceptable drawing is to make many small, quick lines instead of just leaving the pencil on the paper. if i do that, my hand sort of wabbles and the line does not do what i had in mind, so i do many small dashes that overlap. is ther a name for this technique, is it common, or am i just very untalented? :^^:

hmmm I think you just lack control. I'd suggest you sketch a bunch of lines of different variety( straight, curved, long , short, etc.) on one page. Do this in various speeds( slow or fast). Maybe you're putting to much pressure holding a pencil. Just relax, and don't be so worried about making a mistake. Get rid of that wobbling.

patzdon has given some good advice.

i think most people who draw could understand where you're coming from, as many people have been through a stage where they compensate for a lack of practise in a certain area with a short-cut. i do it all the time.

the good news is you have just identified an area where you can improve, so work hard at improving it. next time you find yourself compensating for something, identify the weak point and practise and improve there too.

it has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with practise.

There is nothing wrong with this approach. I start my own drawings this way, but don't use it as a short cut. Use it to lay your drawing in and keep it light, from there slowly refine the drawing, where necessary, useing the short, straight lines to then guide your more precise, practised line.
