Back in the old days, dragons thrived. The fire breathing dinosaur descendants had spread their leathery wings all across the globe. From the heat stricken deserts to lush jungles, the most remote places as well as venturing inside the territory of men. This latest act was brought to a halt when livestock started disappearing and villages were turned into ashes. Those dragons that dared venture into the heart of the human world were soon hunted down and killed. Not even the nests and wyrmlings of the dragons were safe as they were slain during heroic expeditions of mankind. It was only a matter of time before the great dragon race was turned into a small brood of only a handful of the smartest and strongest surviving wyrms. These wyrms migrated to remote places such as swamps, islands and some of the most hardened creatures even swarmed to the arctic regions of the planet. It was a place barely suited for dragons as the food supply was low and the weather conditions harsh.
As it turned out, hunger and cold, were but the least of the dragons worries. The dragons in the frozen regions were being hunted. Hunted by something far worse then humans. Those unfortunate enough were stricken from the skies and received a merciless beating from an unseen force. Their blazing hell fires proved useless against this deceptive foe. Their dagger like claws were weak against the iron hard exterior that landed blow after blow on their scaly hides. Scouting dragons tell tales of these frigid behemoths eating their kin whilst the life of the doomed still, but barely, flowed in their veins, and turning the snow a sickening red.
Over time, a few of the most savage dragons learned to adapt to the climate and the chilling predators of the arctic and became frost dragons, as cool and merciless as their surroundings.

Is it a dragon eating creature with white skin or is it a creature who only eats white skinned dragons?

Vampire Bug - Although not much to look at, these little transparent creatures are the native dragon's worst enemies. The bug, which reaches a maximum of one foot in length, hides itself beneath the sands of the deserts that the dragons habitate and waits until it feels the vibrations of its prey heading toward its position. When the dragon is in range, the bug launches itself out of its shallow cave, latching itself onto the neck of the victim. It then releases a powerful electric shock that stuns the dragon long enough for the vampire to jab its pointed, hollow tongue into the jugular, where it feeds on the blue blood of the dragon until full. They are solitary hunters, but because of their size, they can't ingest all of the blood of a single dragon by themselves and are often joined by "opportunity feeders", which feed until the victim is nothing but a bloodless husk on the desert floor.

Bellows Whale
While hunting, this enormous beast expels copious amounts of steam from thermal vents, which, with its white skin, serves to disguise it as a cloud as it wanders along dragon flight paths. Sensory organs along its sides sense pressure differences in the air, telling it when a dragon is near. As potential prey enters its kill zone, the "whale" emerges from the cloud without warning, shoving its jaws forward and wide open, filling what was a vacuum in its gullet with the air in the immediate vicinity. The suction drags the hapless dragon into its throat, where it is crushed by compressing musculature.
Due to the scarcity of dragons in general, the Bellows Whale has adapted to a lethargic lifestyle between hunts, taking cover in the cloud deck, conserving energy for heat generation and short bursts of speed.

White Spitter
This monster roams the land looking for it's prey. Dragons. When one is found the White Spitter gathers air and fluid in the chambers on its back to build up a high pressure in its trunk and starts producing a resin-like substance beneath its throat. Then at the right moment the substance is pushed into the trunk and the pressure is released. Practically shooting it at the target. If it hits a wing on the dragon it will most likely fall to the ground almost helplessly. All the White Spitter has to do after that is find the spot where the dragon landed and beat it to death with its "fists".

Sentient Fungal Behemoth
Found mostly in uncharted or unexplored areas, these travelling fungi feed on large carcasses of animals. The are frequently found in dragon cementaries, where plenty of food is available. When moving, they emmit a bright light from their sensorial eye-like organ, illuminating a short distance. Since gargatuan mushrooms are not uncommon in the regions that the Sentient Fungal Behemoths can be found, they can stay very still and mimick these large mushrooms. They do this to escape potentially dangerous situacions, though their tentacles can be used as melee weapons if hidding fails.
The light emmiting organ, if cut out, can be sold for quite a high price. Its tough as amber but fairly easy to cut out. Even if removed from the body, the amber-like organ still shines with bright light if moved around. Scholars argue that this is due to a chemical reaction, but for some the light is actually magic.

Cloud Lurker
Just think of a giant, airborne worm. Pure white with its mouth shut, this creature's skin provides adequate camouflage for hunting amongst the clouds. Most of its time is spent waiting, as it rarely crosses paths with its prey. However, when it finds a victim it'll happily swallow them whole. One of the worst ways to die is being digested by a giant worm.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c291/hwango/storm_king_eel.jpg
The Storm King Eel usually attacks from an ambush - lurking inside a cloud until a dragon, roc, or other suitably large flying animal passes nearby. Two of the eel's tentacles end in large, bladed points, and it uses these to cripple or pin the prey's wings, assuming it possesses them. The eel then ensnares its prey in its constricting tentacles and delivers a massive surge of electricity, which is usually enough to kill or stun most victims. Once the target is subdued, the eel closes in to saw through any tough hide or shell with its tiny forelimbs, and then begins to feed.

you're aware of the fact that you just drew a squid? Where is the own design?
Well, I guess I figured that by the time I was done adding fiddly bits and details, it would look different enough from a standard squid and live in such a different environment that it would be considered a new critter. Since that's apparently not the case, I'll abandon trying to make it look like a squid and just make a horrible tentacled cloud dwelling thing that's a different shape. Thanks for the notice.

January 30th, 2006, 04:35 PM
hwango, I really like your entry and where its going. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing that it looks like or is based on a squid. The thing is, like you say, you can change and add things to make it look like a more unique creature. You might want to consider including some sort of mechanism by which the creature flies, for example. Maybe gas-filled ventral sacks? Or some sort of propulsion system. I dunno. Juz werk it and have fun :P

The albino Bog Toad of Kriaxis IV is the only known predator of the swamp drakes that infest the wetlands of the planet. Most beasts are put of by the dragons ability to ignite its hydrocarbon rich saliva and spit a sort of bio-naplam lugi at any perceived foe. The Bog Toad however, is protected by thick rolls of mucus saturated skin and is all but impervious to such attacks. Feeding on the planets bounty of carb rich dragony goodness a Bog Toad can grow to prodigious size.

Cheuliodus fasoani The skyviper.
Scholars and thinkers alike often wondered why there is such a variety of dragons in the world with little
or no overlap of territories, what with being able to fly such distances and having few natural predators.
Cheuliodus knows why; few make it across the great oceans alive.
Their favourite food is dragon flesh, the magic in them makes them taste like giant chickens and cheuliodus
will track their prey for days for that right moment when the thermal updraughts flowing across the ocean
surface will bring a dragon down under 1000ft above sea level. building up incredible speed, the skyviper
will pouncing from the water in a spray of brine, gracelessly hurtling through the 'great-lack' until
their jaws close around the scrumptious morsel.

http://www.houseofscion.com/artwork/wde-fin-web.jpg
Brown Earth Dragons that cross the Aidemo Sea, when not careful, can become lunch for Giant Wahltorians. Leaping out of the ocean with tremendous power and acuracy, these dragon eaters can survive on eating just one dragon every 5-6 months. Having excellent eyesight for a water dwelling beast, they actually are very slow moving when not grabbing dinner.

Some interesting work so far, hwango I have to agree with fozzy, part of the point of creature of the week is to stay as far away from what actually "exists" in real life and to be as creative as possible. Basing the design off of existing animals is great but try not to make it so apparent.
Interesting take Redehlert, the story helps to sell the design. It would be nice to get a sense of scale of this creature, but I like the bird/scavenger of souls type of idea.
Jonoy- Nice design/action and the colors on the white skinned creature is great, its got a rainbow effect going on but still posesses the overall white appearance. It's " a little" hard to tell if the creature is actually jumping out of the sea and attacking a dragon that flew too close to the water based on the composition.. it almost looks more like the dragon eater is flying.. perhaps more splashing water and waves or something?
I'll have mine up soon, need to make some last minute touch ups. :)

The White Skinned Dragon Eater
Argosi Saccus
As with many of the southern coastal species, this particular amphibian has developed a rather...unique method of hunting. While its native habitat boast very little in the way of walking food, it is a well-known migration route for several species of dragon. The "puffer," as it is playfully called, produces as a side-effect (one should note, this is the only side-effect, as well as the only waste product the creature produces) of digestion an amalgamation of gasses far lighter than the atmosphere around it. As the species has evolved without any regular orifice to release this gas, it becomes trapped in a large organ in the front of the creature's body, just between the musculature and skin. As this highly elastic sac bloats, the gas eventually lifts the beast high into the air, settling on an altitude just above the clouds.
Keen eyes, suited for blocking out the harsh, unfiltered rays of the sun without sacrificing sharpness, can see the changes in cloud formation which signal a dragon's approach from miles away, and the nerve impulse which expels the collection of digestive gas through vents between the Puffer's vertebrae is timed nearly perfect. On its downward plunge, the Puffer places all of its weight behind its toughened beak, just over forty pounds(18 kg) but with more than enough speed to tear through the thick hide and rough scales of all but the heartiest species of dragon. Mortally wounded, most dragons put up little fight before hitting the ground hard enough to kill. The Puffer, being toothless, simply unhinges its jaws to swallow its prize whole, to digest and begin anew the cycle of hunting and feeding.

The Kyoto Cloud Catcher
As mystical and rare as its prey was, the Kyoto Cloud Catcher hunted and fed on Japanese and Chinese Dragons (and the occasional kitten). These creatures could be found soaring the skies of the Orient, alone or in pairs, ridding the skies of dragons. Sharp vision and claws, along with great agility allowed this ace to cut the dragon population down to near extinction. The remaining dragons ended up hiding in architecture and statues. Eventually, with food becoming scarce, the Kyoto Cloud Catcher began hunting its own kind, bringing it's own species to a mere memory.

Ok, i'm done with this:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a117/walberg/1f698ff5.jpg
Those who claim that dragons are the fiercest creatures in this world are wrong. The title goes out to the Great Cliff Spiders of the Gothrolin mountain ranges. Although considerably smaller than its prey , a Cliff Spider can take down a full-grown Silver Spineback in a matter of minutes. It manages this feat by awaiting its prey in caves along the cliffs leading to the prey's breeding ground, and lashing out with its front legs and sticky venomous spit when the prey passes by close enough. The dragon has little chance to escape as it gets dragged down the ravine and torn to bits by its ferocious attacker. Cliff Spiders are very rare and do not often grow to maturity. The specimens that do can easily be recognized by their white colour. Their skin (100% fireproof and a very wanted item with alchemists) turns bleached and blasted from the fiery breath of the dragons they slay.

concept: Quokal
A Quokal is a small furry creature whose diet mainly consists of dragon. They fly around in packs of hundreds awaiting their next prey. When grouped together dragons cannot distinguish them from the clouds and will unawareingly fly into them. The Quokals will then immediately attack and inject a neurotoxin (from their fangs) leaving the dragon completely helpless as they feast upon it.

http://touher.com/images/color/dragoneater.jpg
The oldest texts refer to this creature as the"dlaab dlaw", the true name of this dragon predator has been lost with the death of the last dragons. The ancient texts tells of how the "dlaab dlaw" scoured the lands, hunting dragons eggs. Dragon shell is known to withstand the hardest steel but the "dlaab dlaw" could excrete a liquid venom that burns through the hardened eggshell. "Dlaab dlaws" always hunted in packs and could devestate a whole generation in one night. They were an elusive creature that could never be caught and has not been seen since the last dragon eggs disappeared.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/guggenmaneuver/07-2006A31-01.jpg
It has two legs. And it has wild an appetite for dragons. It lives in the holen, attacking on the dragons whereas they sleep. To attack, sticks it is two toxic canines in their necks, and finishes to the upper part of the rest with a VERY flexible mouth and lips which plane gone the rest of flesh.

possessed: really an interesting rendering style.
Corrick: man, I don´t wanna be in that dragons skin in that moment :)
bRØk3n_sPiRiT: your giant mushroom is an intersting approach I think. I wouldn´t have come up with that.
cognition.sb: your dragon eater rocks. Although it is drawn in a very simplicistic way the tension comes out very well.
meeatu: cool linework. How do these creatures find their prey... I mean do the y"see" like those legged creatures in "Tremors 2"?
madplanet: I guess yes.... It´s just a white rock creature. And one suggestion. If you paint some not so dark rock areas or stones in the entry it will look more three dimensional. Just don´t forget the angle of the light: If it come from above (left) you´d see some kind of lighted triangle in the right inner "cheek". I hope it makes sense :)

guggenmaneuver: So there wasn´t very much left of the dragon, right :D
It´s cool to see that you´re working on your ink skills, you´re getting the feeling for the line weights in your texture lines. Why don´t you go one step further and don´t render out every plastic form, but leave some areas blank, like the tops of those parts facing nearer to the light?

Gorgetuan
Giant of the underworld, these gargantuan sized beasts lay hidden within the earth, never seen by human eyes because they have never breeched the surface, not even at night. These Whales of the underground are pigment-less due to their underground life styles, leaving them pure white with the exception of their organs.
Gorgetuans tunnel through the ground leaving a gigantic maze of caves, ripping away at the soil with their large powerful claws and 6 small flipper-like appendages. Their skin is as tough as rock and almost impenetrable by human or beast. They are armored with a mouth full of razor sharp serrated teeth, mounted in rows of 3 and even protruding through their lower and upper folds of skin just above and below the mouth.
Reaching lengths of up to one hundred feet, these indestructible killing machines prey upon large creatures and seem to have a craving for dragon flesh. It's the sweet smell of the dragons breath and fiery taste that enrages the Gorgetuan... leading it right to the dragons lairs where they are most vulnerable and incapable of flight or quick retreat. In means of survival, the Gargetuan will lay its eggs, camouflaged among a dragons nest, leaving it up to its prey to nurture and look after its young until they are born.

The White Skinned Signabs
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/meeatu/dragon_hunter_2.jpg
Infested with dragons, the kingdom of Alinam searches for a solution. Dragons destroy have destroyed their farms and feasted on their livestock. In desperation, the king sent a group to capture and tame the white skinned Signab.
These are creatures are found in the volcanoes of Zidac. They used their uncanny sense of smell to detect their prey and their agility and numbers to put them down. With a bite it infects its prey with its bacteria loaded saliva.
After the success of the mission, Signabs wer tamed and served the kingdom of Alinam. They wer considered as heroes and gods.
As the dragons disappear, so did the fame and royal treatment. They wer mistreated and left to starve.
Primal instincts came and the animal turns against its masters. The Signab has a new food on the menu ... humans.
It's known that they were responsible for the one night fall of Alinam.

WHITEMARE
[inspired by Orgeano's LICH, LADY And LORD FREDRICKSON]
"..once they where dragons, now they are theirs shadows"
A tale...
"Ages before, there was living a Mage, so powerful that he could create new species. He lived on island, only with his daughter. He had been creating many creatures for her, because she hadn't any friends. New trees, flowers and beasts started to live on this incredible island. But when his daughter finished 11 years he created something really special for her. A dragon. New fantastic type of creature. They were smart, powerful and... they could fly! Taraga, that was the name of his daughter, was very happy. She had fun with her new friends every day. She just loved to fly over the island on mighty dragons. But some day when she was playing, she fell down from the sky. This day was really tragic for the magician. He was able to create almost everything but couldn't rescue his own daughter. He cursed the dragons genus. He tried to kill every dragon on the island but a few escaped. He tried to trace them and kill them, but couldn't find any. So he returned to the island to find the way to bring his daughter's life back. But the path he was following couldn't help him. So he chose a new path. Dark one. And started to study the black magic. After few years he became much more powerful but it still wasn't enough. He even became... a Lich. In a half alive and in a half - dead... But he still couldn't get Taraga back. He was desperate and angry. He realized that the only thing he could do is to exterminate the whole dragon species. Once again he created a new species - Whitemare - the beast that hunts on other beasts. This creature has been created from the dragon egg, that was found on this island. Whitemare are evil and intelligent, and have only one reason to exist - to kill all dragons!"

JakkaS - Maybe a bit of bounced light on surfaces in the bottom right. Currently it's just a big, black void. Also, the black line on the upper gums should curve with the form of the gums near the edge, the way it is now, makes it look flat. Make the silhoutte of the dragon in the egg stand out more, especially around the nose area to clearly define that these are two different species..
BTW, looks fantastic so far.

The Oshmit (Osh-mit)
Affectionately nic named "mushy" by travelers familiar with it. The actual origin of the "mushy" is unkown. The most popular believe is that was an enchanted creature created my a magician long ago. What is know for sure is now the mushys roam wild. They are loosley organized in packs. They don't seem to have a social order to speek of. It seem they gather together in order to be able to subdue their prey. The Oshmit's main advantage seems to be that it is completely fire retardent. This may be what led to the speculation of being an enchanted creature, along with the abilty of flight without adiquate wings. In packs they are quite a threat to their prey.

"TERRA CARNIFICUS"
The Terra Carnificus, Also known as Dragon’s Bane, is an enormous beast that lives in the deserts of the planet Bremor V. Every year during the annual dragon migration, it wakes up from its slumber to gorge upon hundreds of dragons. It lies in wait burrowed deep inside the earth, with only the tip of its mouth showing, which emits the smell of rotten meat which to the famished dragons flying overhead proves irresistable. As soon as a dragon gets within range, the Carnificus shoots out its tongue with incredible force. The prey is enveloped in a membrane which gradually tightens as it is eaten alive.

Albino Morsus.

"big fish eat smaller fish."
the albino Morsus is a great descendent of a long gone reptilian sort.
slowly gaining size, strength and severity through billions of years of evolution, this colossus now reigns the lands of Kermidia. the big albino`s meals consists exclusivly of dragons. among them, the "GreatFlame-Drako" is his favorite catch of the day.
this giant would have been man`s best friend - considering his dragon-only diet - if it wasn`t a case of "the cure being worse than the disease":
the Albino Morsus makes the habbit of using vast cities as his nesting ground, destroying and killing everything in its path.

The White-Fleshed Dragon Scab
"The White-fleshed Dragon Scab, commonly called 'white scabbies', is seldom obvious as it dwells under the dragon's huge scales. It sups upon blood in addition to other, smaller draconian opportunists on the host's skin. 'White scabbies' is considered quite the delicacy by many aboriginal peoples, for it's succulence (when fat with blood) and it's difficulty to harvest. Despite the flea-like appearance, it is actually the size of your average housecat."

hey chuck, mate - the 'only' thing that serves as a distraction for me is the gradient "stepping" of value in your sky backdrop. not sure why it's doing that, but perhaps it is because the values chosen for the gradient are to close/abrupt. a gaussian blur may be all that is in order.

Even at is large size, (same size as a small dragon) evolution has granted this creature the ability to leap extreme distances and huge heights, propelled by massively muscled flea like legs. upon spying a dragon flying peacefully above, it fires itself at the target, often breaking bones upon impact, certainly surprising the prey, once contact is made, paralyzing lash like stings add an extra danger to the dragon, and often than not, the hapless stunned victim spirals to the ground, to be found later by the flea like monstrosity. It is fortunate that there are not many of these flea beasts left, but that is mainly because they were too successful in acquiring their prey, and as the number of dragons dwindles, the flea beasts starve.
Great entries! this little fella was a progressive pic for me, i have learnt to use my home brew brushes in photoshop, and now i can continue to leech the fantastic techniques on display here :)

February 2nd, 2006, 04:16 PM
The ancient Bloodfish "Ichtyis Sanguis" attacks in masses like todays piranha fish.
The subspecies Sanguis dragonor is specialised to hunt midi-sized non-winged dragons that are attracted by the shimmering shoal in the shallow shore water of warm slow rivers. The narrow lower jaw rips the skin under the scales and the prey bleeds to faint fastly. The fishes devor everything even the bones of the dragons - even if this takes months.

this creature attacks and eats young dragons, that can't yet fly. it rams the dragon over and then pierces the under belly with its razor sharp front horn.
it then eats the stomach, its contents and intestines, leaving the rest for scavengers. it kills and eats 1 or 2 young dragons a day.

The three sub species of the albino Cookie Cutter (CC) all of which live in feeding groups of about 1200-1500 in the dragon hibernation caves around volcanos, on the left we have the common or leaping CC centre the rarer lesser or creeping CC and right the hanging CC (death from above) on average a CC will take a plug of dragon flesh six or seven inches across and 12 inches or so deep. A feeding swarm can strip a dragon carcass in less than a minute, they attack in unison aiming for the main muscle groups and the throat to prevent their prey alerting the others sleeping through the winter.
n.b. the lesser CC is the only sub species to employ a corkscrewing action to secure food, the others use brute force and gravity.

The Chupadrago- also know as the Dragon's Fly.
This midevil creature can grow as long as 8 ft long, and is believed to fly
as fast as 65 miles an hour. This creature is very agile and very similar to insects, but is in fact in the same reptile-like family as the dragons. It also has a hard exo-skeleton that protects it from getting burned. Chupadrago will only eat dragons and have a fondness to their blood. They are very picky as to how they feast, while clamping on with their long legs to the undeside of a dragon they tend to jab their sharp beak-like snout into the dragons throat. Then insert a long tube-like mouth and begin to suck the dragons blood while the outer part of the mouth clamps and pulls chunks of blood drained flesh.

http://misledtomisery.com/forums/whiteskinfin.jpg
the magmurus is a well armored, blind albino creature. it relies heavily on sonar rays emitted from it's mouth to travel the mountain regions it is most commonly found in. dubbed the dragon-eater, these monsters often feed on dragons and dragon-kind. it's tongue is extremely sensitive to the sulphuric discharge from dragon's breath, which helps guide the magmuri to their prey. they use their long extending tentacles to paralyze the dragons, having short tendrils that can creep under dragon scales. after its prey is incapacitated, their powerful teeth and mandible bone are designed to effectively break down dragon scales and bones. a single feeding can sustain this creature for years, though most are known to feed once a year, and reside in their prey's unoccupied caverns until it is necessarry to move and feed again.

AS FOR A SHORT DESCRIPTION...
There have been rumors spread by wild-eyed dragonwatchers of horrible creatures of unknown origin drifting across the heavans as ships through the seas, lurking within the clouds waiting for their prey to come within reach...those ships are these... somehow enticing their primary prey, dragons, to come near...they fire some sort of grapple from their boddies, probably venomous to quickly subdue the great beasts, grasping the nearest dragon and whipping it into the mist. When within reach it clutches the dragon with in it's 3 forward arms and begins feeding.
These monstrosities have friends as well, feeding on the creatures leftovers and parasites while serving to defend it's host to the death...these four winged reptilian aboninations deter any would be attackers. Foreign to any known land based nests, this "bird" is seemingly unique to its host.
so...i was thinking this things back would be filled with gas pockets, hundreds of them, which keep it aloft, and also provide propellant via vents on it's shell. ..and the sails would help with balance and ...well... sailing.
well... what do you think? ...not counting the typoes... which I keep finding...theer eveyrwehre!
