wow! i really didn't expect to get such a response from these!
to everyone who replied to the last post, my deepest thanks. i've been having a lot of fun with these. so i put a step by step together, so you guys can see my process. i.was.ink, this is for you, dude.

step 1: pencil drawing. i pumped up the contrast so you ca n see it, but its really alot lighter than this:

step 2: colored pencil to refine the forms, and lay in base value:

step 3: i spray fix the colored pencil, then lay on the ink wash.

then, lastly i come back in with a little gouache, and a little more colored pencil, to refine and detail...

so thats it. this probably took about 1-2 hours, and i think he looks a little like tim conway. hope you like, and i encourage you all to try this, as its fun, easy and noncommital.-c36

I have a question though. I've never worked with gouache before. Won't that and the ink bleed throught the paper? I want to try this, but I don't want to destroy my sketchbook.

Another little ? is: Do you have any tips for what kind of gouache to get?

i love the technique, almost like prometheus but kinda not. whatever, i have been fiddling with this style lately.

looking at the final piece is great, but looking at the steps just blows my mind. that was great. i rememeber a while back you posted the other stop by step, and i tried it.. i failed horribly.

hey, i'm glad y'all liked this. you know, i wish i had scanned more frequently, that's the bitch to traditional media, i guess. it just takes too much time to keep laying the damn book on the scanner.....next time i'll include more iterations.

rudecorleone: try it! its easy! trust me...

metaphysiks: it's interesting you said that, there's an important lesson here. no matter what the tools, the approach is fundamentally the same. i've found through personal preference that i prefer a real brush still. painter comes close, but i can get a wider variety of shapes with a brush. i'm constantly amazed how artists like prometheus and foster get such interesting shapes with digital media. i need to work on that.

davi: feel free to copy it over. although this isn't what i would consider my best, the process is the same...

i.was.ink: put a piece of loose paper underneath. it'll bleed, but the paper will save the rest of your book. as for gouache, Turner and holbein are my favorites.

fozzybear: i referenced the guy loosely out of a national geographic, but i faked the light on top and the background is made up.
