I think its good practice to work on three characters from the same story. I mean when an artist gets a job doing concept art, they have to do tons of drawings of the same world.

Lord Fredrickson
journal entry - 24 January 1853
Khalid's Curse.
I write this in memory of the life-changing event a mere fortnight heretofore.
Pray for mercy. Bah! An affront on thy soul!
The scrape with Khalid, Lich follower of Osiriis, will be repeated in thy nightmares forevermore.
Fool, say I! Upon entering the dimly lit chamber of Khalid, whom I dare say was supposedly deceased, I spied a dais set upon with jewels, fine wine, vessels and a skull atop a silken pillow - Khalid. Torchlight from thirteen sconces threw dangerous patterns and cast shadows for aught I know were empty recesses.
Fool say I once more! Khalid, merely a skull, was waiting for thee. For upon entering the chamber, the room became sealed! The flames about the room, and in thy hand— snuffed out as if by some invisible breath—the chamber fell into darkness.
A cackle, felt more inside thy skull than from any person brought thee to thy knees —rapt in the pale crimson glow of the skulls sockets and that of eleven servants, three of which held thee still.
A voice erupted sending sparks inside thy head, "Youuu commmme to dessstroy thee, but it issss I who ssssshall dessssstroy you, sssson of Light." The statement reverberated in thy mind until a brilliant flash of utter blackness, darker than the darkest night, ripped through thee and consumed thee.
I awoke outside the chamber, sealed and apparently never opened. Isabella's cries stirred thee, but not thy soul for Khalid owned it. Khalid's curse was felt more than acknowledged for thy presence was neither here nor afterlife. A cure must be found or I must find Khalid and destroy him.

The Egyptian Lich
The Ancient Egyptian God Khnum was elder of all the Egyptian gods and said to be the great potter, who crafted both God and Man alike in his image. He once Reigned as the God of the Nile and birthed civilization within the dry desserts of Egypt, and was worshiped and revered by his children. However the jealousy of his first born, Ra the Sun God would be Khnum's downfall. Ra raised a private army of mortals and other deities to strip Khnum of his power thus casting him into exile 'forever' trapped between the land of the living and the dead. After centuries of exile, Khnum began to loath the world he created watching Kings and Gods come and go as quickly as the water which once flowed through his great Nile. As his thirst for revenge gave way to madness, his love for creation was now nothing more than a distant memory within an insane mind. He now plans to recreate his great river, this time using the blood of his forsaken children to fuel it. His name is now long forgotten, he is known only by the term Lich, and is feared in the world of the living

The Egyptian Lich
The Lich has advanced knowledge of archaic and devilish formulas unknown to the outside world. He uses what we now call "science" to create magicks that bewilder and deteriorate flesh. He wears a garment made partially from enemies he has trounced. Their eye sockets, varying in size and shape form that which he wears around his waist. He weilds a sword with great powers, the piercing eye of the hilt serves to hypnotize and stun his opponents from a range while he approaches and does the dirty work up close.

Howdy... I'm done -would have loved to do more on this one, but my time doesnt allow it :(
http://www.virusarts.com/mostrecent/lichking.jpg
In the year 5000 bc the ruling emperor Rae Ho-Tep sought to cleanse the world of all its evil.
Knowing that that the root of evil lies deep withing the soul of every human being, he and his most trusted priests prepared an ancient, forbidden ritual to suck up and contain all dark emotions and thoughts of humankind. A terrible mistake...
The ritual failed due to misinterpretation of the mysterious glyphs written down in the book of souls. Rae Ho-Tep became a focus of the worlds evil, absorbing it with his body and immortal soul.
Transformed into a twisted, terrifying, undead creature he brought decades of pain and suffering over the known world, eating the souls of the innocent, transforming them into an army of the undead.
The ancient gods granted humanity a second chance by sending Anubis- god of death - to defeat and entomb the egyptian lich and his undead servants. He now lurks within the hidden catacombs, waiting patiently for a fool to open his dusty grave, thirsting for a new chance to plague humanity.
Pray that he wont be found, for he will unleash eternal darkness over the world!
cheers,
Etienne

Hey Oreg, would it be interesting if we were to put up Lady Isabelle, Lord Fredrickson and the Lich together in combinations?
Winners of each will be put up together to see how well they gel. Then all those who participated in all 3 could put theirs together and see if it fits.
And we could go thru all entries to see which 3 fits best.

This enchantress, has Lord Fredrickson trapped in her spell. Although its eating him alive, he can't resist. Part of the Suffering of his poor wife is due to the succubus charms of this lich. He can't kill her, He can't live without her and she is changing him into her undead form. The box tucked under her arm is where she keeps her soul.

righto this is my effort, still wip, will try and find a bit of time to finish tomorrow but have a very busy weekend.
tried to get more punch with this one as my last one lacked visual impact.
went for a slightly different slant on the subject matter too:
a lich is a wizard who has made a pact with a demon for imortality. i decided that our lich has met an unfortunate demise as his demon has succedded in using him as a vessel to break through in to the world of the living! mwa ha ha ha

could use some feeback on this one re: shadow detail/overall value range. i work on a TFT (yeah, i know, not the best, but until i get some paying work it's all i got) so pieces like this in a compressed contrast range and rather dark can be a struggle due to viewing angle diffs. i use P-shop's histograms as much as possible but they aren't always easy to analyse when you're working a dark subject.
i'm mainly concerned that the shadow detail doesn't get lost. looks OK on my setup, but how 'bout on yours?

Masque: I think the values are coming along niceley for a WIP still... only thing that looks wonky to me is his right hand... seems to be flipped, thumb outward. Is this part of the curse?1) not WIP
2) hand not flipped -- holding blade w/palm up, thumb's where it belongs. maybe the dog-leg knife handle was misleading?
3) thanks for comment on the values.
@cognition.sb -- thanks for the feedback, it's one of my faves, too. one of the first (lately) where it came out pretty much exactly as i had initially envisioned it.

mmmhmmmm I wreckon the sling blade dun throw'd me off a bit mmmm hmmmmmm.
Sorry if I thought it was a WIP, the anatomy of the hand still bothers me a bit, but what do I know? I love it anyways. Excellent job.

Excellent job.no need for apple-polly-loggies, you saw what you saw & it helped. :teeth: i revised that hand a bit, shortening the thumb and angling it slightly diff, and it does work better, thanks for the keen eye and good words, guys!

masque.. something about that perspective looks a bit off.. Im having trouble trying to figure out whats the viewers angle. It seems like its a slightly overhead straight on shot but, the table or that bowl doesnt read like that. also that chandelier is hanging too low or maybe should be simply shrunk down a bit. Its at the same level as the two minions in the BG. nice concept though..

@ vigostar: yeah the persp's kind of unusual, view from fairly high above and slightly in front of bowl -- the formal "horizon" is out of the frame @ top, and i had to figure a lower VP as well -- i wanted a slightly wide-angle look to it with some exaggerated keystoning. the oil lamp does hang low (not much more than head height), as i wanted to give a sense of a low-ceilinged, almost cave-like space but without using any specific architectural referents (ceiling beams, wall lines, etc.) maybe not as successful as i perceive it, though. my biggest prob was establishing the spatial planes behind the lich using only the lighting.

"October 24th, 1942
Prime Minister Churchill,
We have reason to believe the Nazi Afrika Korps has unearthed an ancient Egyptian artifact of great occult power somewhere in the deep desert. My scouts marked signs of ongoing excavations, and a number of strange occurances and unexplained deaths have taken place over the past five days. Just yesterday a tent of men was found dead, with a swastika burned into each of their foreheads. That night, one of my men, a sergeant with some knowledge of the occult, identified a ghostly figure lurking outside our camp as a lich. Upon his urging, I have contacted you to request the aid of Lord George Henry Fredrickson. Only with his aid, I fear, would we be able to fend off this threat. If the man - or creature - we have seen is truly an Egpytian lich, Lord Fredrickson may be very interested indeed...."

Thanks so much bro! Much appreciated as always.
Now if I can just somehow bribe Jason Chan to come in and color this bad boy
before tomorrow...then I think I may just stand a snowball's chance in hell against this
utterly killer talent on this thread.
You guys are madmen...and I mean that in the nicest sense.

masque - wicked viewpoint, narration and good amount of detail. you make me remember what im doing, or rather how I should or could differently approach this.
cakey - really nice scale used, good rendering of the creature.

Uwa! Just barely made it; shorter deadline this week or is it just me?
These lines are based on a sketch by Bumskee, he forced me to color them :O! I don't know if that sort of thing is allowed here; doesn't need to go to vote if that's the case. Here's his lines by the way:

I'm pretty happy with this especially for the time I put into it; I'll blabber more in my sketchbook, here's not the place.
