Tomas, could you please edit the header, so as to contain not the old rules, but the new ones?
Just follow the other thread and you will see them.

Detail of an old RivaTNT2 card...
By the way thanks for all nice comments (and votes) I got in the last challenge. I'm a novice when it comes to photography. I took it up for about a year ago as meditation to the stressfull life you live as an illustrator...

Oh, here I am, bringing my helpless 3 Mp Cannon against your much better weapons...
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f220/Vistaspa/CoatofArmsmic.jpg
This is a small detail from the upper left corner of the entrance to one of the old buildings surrounding the Exeter Cathedral. Since my camera is far from brilliant when it comes to macro shots, I had to make the topic mean "Detail of a larger architectural complex" rather than a "Detailed image of smth...".
And, in case you were wondering, the colours are real. You've got to see it to believe it...
Any way, if you would like to see the other picturea I took, just visit the Eye of the Tourist thread.

hey khshayathiya, that's a good photo with great colors! and it shows, that a good detail-picture doesn't have to be a macro-shot...
btw - my camera has 2mp. i guess if i bought a mobile phone today i would get more. but it's still a good camera...:)

Thanks, Stine!
I wouldn't have guessed your camera only had 2 Mp. You get very smooth pictures with it, really!
Well, the poorer the camera, the greater the challenge, right? The greater the challenge, the more rewarding it it to see a pleasing outcome!
I side with Shade, though, why didn't you post the other lightbulb? It had plenty of detail and the curves were very beautiful!

MP's mean squat!
that just the number of pixels in a picture... :)
Khshayathiya
January 25th, 2006, 11:37 AM
Is it? I thought it was the number of light sensors in a camera. Hence, the crucial factor in getting a detailed image...

January 25th, 2006, 11:45 AM
hmmmm, i'm thinking about replacing my photo. what do you think, guys - would that be okay with the rules?
Barret_wallace
January 25th, 2006, 11:50 AM
light sensors? like the one that measures the "light strength"? ;)
a digital cam has a CCD or a CMOS Chip instead of film.
the mega pixels of your camera is not necessarily the mega pixels of your sensor, the image processor often produces extra pixels so that the producer
can mark the camera as a 7 MP camera but the chip only supplies 4 mp's to the processor. there are thing more important that MP on a digital cam,
the quality of the lens, the color reproduction, the flash. and so on.

I think stine was asking if one might replace the picture posted in the challenge with another one, taken at the same time and for the same purpose.
That's perfectly allright with me, Stine. As long as by the time the poll starts, you have one picture, I don't think you are braking the rules.
But I think you shoud get the approval of more people...

I think its time for a new rule!
You are allowed to edit, change, or substitute your picture as many times as you like so long as it is before the pole.
It sounds good to me, but what do you think Barret? (the challenge is your baby afterall)
and Mexagpixels do certainly matter - they're not the be all and end all of digital photography though. You will get better results with a higher mp camera - at a certain point it becomes mostly irrelevant unless you're printing large (i think that point is between 8 and 10 mp). My camera has an effective 8.2 megapixels. That does allow you to get more detail in your photograph, but when the photos are uploaded they are shrunk and the added detail from the camera is lost essentially. The lens is the most important part though, if your camera doesnt have a good lens all the mp in the world arent going to help you take an amazing shot. More mp doesnt necessarily mean better photos - it just means larger files, more detail overall in the picture (when you zoom in) and then you have the ability to print larger. Both of your cameras seem really good - or rather you both seem to have found a great way to push your camera. Every camera/lens functions differently and from my experience it takes a bit of time to get used to the camera/lens such that you can manipulate it and push it to take the pictures you want. I might have a detail shot, but im not sure yet (took a few pics today at school). And yeah im all for the being able to change pics up until the poll.

dkijc, thanks! That's what i thought... i like how you have managed to get the impression of a horizon, which makes it look like it really is a tree. Really cool pic!
Barret, we might aswell start a new thread for the voting... because we want all the pics in the first post too. We could call it "The Photo Challenge - DETAIL - Voting".
And we should have a link in there to this thread so it wont get lost.
I think in the future it's better if one person has the responsibility for the challenge (starting threads, opening polls etc.), because the way it is now it's a bit unclear for the winner what he's supposed to do and stuff. If the person who has the responsibility goes on vacation or whatever, he can assign someone else in the mean time.
