i would say you are off to a good start. if you want to really stand out from the rest, i would focus on lots of life drawings. if youve started doing figure work from life, i would highly recommend throwing some good ones in. its not as hard to get into ringling as it used to be,unfortunatly.for a while now, ringling like other art colleges will let anyone in, they use them as money fillers. ohh yeah by the way i speak from experience. im a ringling grad. i was an illustration major, where you will see lots of fillers. but back to the subject, since you have good lookin work and you might want to go for the single scholarship that they offer, go for life drawings and finished illustrations with good comps thats what i would think would really help boost your port. your doing stuff that was required in most of the foundation classes like the muscle structures and bone structures.so your ahead of the game and your ink work really reminds me of jack unruh, hes a excellent illustrator with ink and watercolors.check his work out. what major are you lookin to go into and what kind of career are you lookin into? if you want any feed back on ringling ill tell you the goods and bads about the school that they might not tell you.

thanks for the respones guys. i'll focus more on life drawing then and do a few in color, try to put together some interesting compositions. i'm going in for illustration as well and i hope to get a job doing character or concept art. maybe just even doing full on illustrations.... who knows my first prioity is getting in there and busting ass. i went to the art institute of philly a few years back so i know all about the fillers, etc. within the first few weeks we lost like 50 students. anyway this is for my own personal gain. i hope to meet some good people and network while i'm there. i don't really care about any "real" info that anyone may have to offer. i'm already sold on the school and i'll have to just see things for the way they are when i get there. i'm older and wiser now so i think i'll be ok :D
i'll be sure to update this sometime soon.... hopefully tonight or tomorrow. thanks again

Damn, i had a link to the pictures by some guy from another forum, who has been accepted at a german art academy
but i didnt save the link, when i formated my hd.
Ill try to find this guy and ask him for the link.
He had done some drawings of things in everday life like some chocolate or so, went on with some
figure drawings or so aand...hm, ive forgotten too much.
At the end hed done some real creative picture wich was drawn in comic style where he played
with black and white, light and shadows...ah, i cant describe it adequate...
But this was all in traditional media...no digital stuff...
I dont know how the guys at your academy like it but digital paintings are easier to fake, you know...

If i misunterstood the sense of your post - dragonpunch.

/e: Why the heck are you "member of the lower class"!?
Some of your picts are great imo!

Keep it up stikler! We are all cheering for you. One word of advice...jason has said on multiple occasions that the recruiters are sick of seeing manga/conceptual/sci-fi type of stuff. Include a couple of those but focus on things that just show good drawing skills...your anatomy studies are a good example...stuff like that is great. Keep us updated bro...keep up the good work!

hey MCM thanks!!! wow good to finally hear from you regarding this post. if you are referring to the last "semi-self-portrait" pic and the franky pics, those are the only ones like that i am going to include. as you can see i have that fruit piture to show some color, and i will probably no i will do some more life drawings in color perhaps. i need to work in color more!! it's so amazing to sit and try to figure out what colors are in there and how to apply them to a painting. i find myself doing this more and more on the outside when i'm walking or just looking at something. anyway. thanks! hey any chance of you going to ringling this fall?

yea, working in color is great. i've been experimenting a lot with color and trying to improve my color sense within the last 3-4 months. Its definitely something that i would recommend you to do a focused study on. Just keep it up, stay motivated and draw like 3 pages of sketchbook a day, and your solid. your stuffs looking great btw.

heh and all that talk about "money fillers" in art schools, i totally agree with the rest of you guys. I'm currently going the the art institure in orange county.... and lets just say theres alot of "filler" lol. It almost drags you down, and make not want to do stuff since most of the other people are half assing there way through school with lackluster work and effort. You just have to run with a different crowd, attach yourself to other talented individuals and they keep you motivated.

Yeah finding the right colors is really hard. I have extremely minimal exposure to color work but from what I've done so far it's really difficult. I'm excited for you man...take advantage of every second you have there. Work like you've never worked before...don't party...etc...work and then go back to your room and work some more. Make sure you work from life as much as you can too...painting and all...everything...work from life.

I wish I could come to Ringling...unfortunately I would have to get a job down there first and so would my wife. I am working at University of Pennsylvania and I am taking every class I can here but when I'm done I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. I guess there's a possibility I could go to a school like ringling. How much is it a year to go there? It looked like 18k a year is that about right?

here's one that i have been working on... help needed. and i'm sorry for the double post (i have this up in Work in progress as well)

MCM, let me just tell you that i am moving with my wife and kid from oklahoma down to sarasota just so i can do this. i have a few job opportunities lined up already. we have been busting our asses to get this stuff going and in place and this has just been in a matter of a week. my wife has been looking at apartments and i have been focusing on my entrance portfolio. and applying for jobs that she finds. the school is like $20 a year plus other fees and supplies :(
but once you're finished.... well a good job could pay that off in a matter of a couple years. anyway, it wouldn't hurt to look into it. call them, get a catalogue and get some info. the even have family housing!! your wife and you could live on campus for like $500 a month and they are nice looking. ok well keep on critiquing my stuff guys!! thanks a lot!!

as a graduate of the computer animation program at ringling, i'm not sure how helpfull i can be about the illustration program there, but as far as a portfolio:

they tend to look for an understanding of the basic principles of drawing, etc. If you have a good drawing showing off the use of perspective, show it. include drawings where you show how you built up a form (of whatever) from solid shapes.

along those lines, figure drawing is good if you have it. again, not only finished stuff, but stuff that shows that you have some understanding of how to build a figure, proportion it, etc.

they also like a 3-part series i did of a dolphin, showing process:
1-basic line drawing (centerline of dolphin, ovals defining shape of dolphin in perspective, etc)
2-b. and w. value rendering
3-full color/finished

again, this was for computer animation, but i imagine the other majors are about the same, as all 1st years go through nearly the exact same foundation courses.

good luck!
chris

last year when i was applying for colleges (illustration), all of them emphasized life drawing. also, try using a variety of media, not just a lot of computer, pencil, and ink stuff. try using charcoal (compressed and vine) and show your skills with that. if you havent used charcoal before, its a really great medium for life drawing and such. self portraits drawn from a mirror help a lot too. .some colleges require one to be in the portfolio. your stuff is looking good... i want to see the still life pushed further. keep up the good work, and i ll be checking back for additional critiques.

that painting seems to be coming along nicely, now what you have to do is push the values. and clearly indicate your light source. right now it seems to be coming from the the top right. make another pass dropping in your darks and placing your core. Mess around with different light temperatures. Maybe make your key light a warm light, and have a soft cool fill light to help render out the form. because in its beginning stages it seems kinda flat. just push those values and you should be good to go.
