question: i know the submission is supposed to be a new work, but can it be based on something done previously (very previously, like 25 years ago!)? what i have is a simple line drawing, wanted to use it as the base for a full-tilt digital painting.

monks of Jin-wan-hu resides at their hi-tech preety costly monestry,
spreading all over the west side of the "hungry rabbit" mountain.
money as their spritual enlightning force of nature(human nature that is..),
provides for every whim and possible need, courtsy of the beilivers (and non-beilivers)
, citizens of North Kuya, pun-ma.
"one must beilive in something.one might as well enjoy it." and
"why think? here`s a buck." are some of the Jin-Wan-Hu sacred mantras.
legend has it some of the monks have reached such a high level
of spirituality they were able to float in mid air.
the ones who could afford it, that is.

monastery of Our Lady Of Retrievers,
somewhere in the mountains of Cracus,
planet Sardo.

The origin of the Retrievers, the dissident religious sect, leads by Old Lady, the oldest school of
Black arts of retrieving into the eternal life.
After Retrievers unsuccessful upbringing in the year of the Loon the sect was proclaimed illegal and most of the members have been killed by the Trade Hanza troops just few of them survived
lost the right to be retrieved and served the rest of their lives in shame as bodyguards to different Hanzas.
The Old Lady was never apprehend and there is the rumors she still lives high in the mountains
waiting for the right time to come back.

Carved over millenia from the living stone of one of the greatest peaks of the J'ronlan Rift, the mountain fastness of Rishilan is home to the Order of Mes, ascetics who undergo ten reclusive years of education and contemplation of Asa'Shari, the spirit world, before re-entering the Na'Shari, the mundane world, as teachers, artists, poets, musicians, and mentors.

Every year one hopeful is allowed to enter the Order as an acolyte, but only if he or she succeeds in the traditional Pilgrim's Task: Starting at sunset on the eve of the vernal equinox, following a week of fasting and meditation, the pilgrim begins to climb the Way of Ten Thousand Steps clad only in the crimson Robe of the Petitioner. If the Petitioner arrives at the Great Gate of Rishilan before the first rays of the rising sun strike the courtyard of the monastery, the Pilgrim is welcomed as a new member of the Order. Those who fail are given food, water and clothing, and must return to their former lives to await the next year's equinox.

Mountainside Monastery
Legend has it that when the gods themselves walked the earth, they created this monastery as an everlasting symbol. Carved between two slabs of stone, under the protection of the Great Mountain of Riverwind, this Monastery has been hidden for centuries. Yet, although unattended to for ages, it has not withered or decayed. It further states that it can only be rediscovered by one of pure heart. Thus, it will stand until the fate of the world is decided, perhaps hidden forever if the world has lost the path.

HI I'm new at this so, please be kind if I get the format wrong.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/chaosrocks/Mountain-Monastery.jpg

I think the size is ok

this monastery is the home of a conteplative order of monks who gradually build their indurance as they work their way up to the pinnacle. There are exactly 1000 steps to the top.
Inspired by the diligence of Swallows and Mudwasps, these small cells cling directly to the cliff face.

Im afraid I call it the "Staiway to heaven" Monastery.

Hi

Inspiring work all around. I'd like to put something in for this activity.

annisamad - wow, nice clouds. great overall rendering. are you going to take it farther?

masque - pretty cool idea. Something about the green pasture that seems to flatten things out a bit perhaps its the 'texture scaling' ...that or perhaps the horizon line position? I can't quite tell if it is supposed to be flat and goin off into the distance or if it is a steep hill? I dunno, might be just me.

The Khalin Monastery

During the age of Neo-reich empire, religions themselves were banned, but such worshipping, as worshipping war were extremely encouraged.

One of such war worshipping monastery's, was the monastery of Khalin. The monks of the monastery commit themselves to practising martial art skills and war tactics everyday. It is well known, that most secret and deadly martial art styles are practised by the Khalin monks.

While in exile commander Dhaa'r seeked out the Khalin monastery to pledge himself to war, vengeance and fighting. It was here, where the legend of Dhaa'r von Fahrenheit started.

Hey everybody. I've been a long time lurker and haven't really drawn much in the way of environments so I figured I'd start jumping in the EOW when time permits. So here's my entry. I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to work on this more and I've been overworking it a bit and having to take a step back so it may be my final.

Crits most definitely welcome.

"With the Order of the Plainclothes Salesmen dwindling Mt. Handshake Monastery is nowadays quite barren. This once bustling hub of backroom deals and spiritual enlightenment, with it's spectacular views, has begun to feel the financial pinch of unpopularity. The Order has come up with many ideas of how to make the monastery profitible again but is ironically having problems finding the financial backing."

Mt. Dugishi monastary, known for its lovely blue roofs and the monks by who's mental effort alone the floating islands stay aloft, is open for visitation on the astral plane at any time of day or night. On a physical level however, visitors have been known to disrupt the concentration of the monks, causing several casualties...

The mountain monastery, built by ancient travellers, still stands to this day because of constant renovation. Used as a significant ending to a pilgrimage for the followers of those who constructed it. Although the details on the race are relatively small, it has been disputed that the so called homosapians became extinct because of an unknown elemental power, that was released from the rocks near the monastery over 800 years ago.

Also, same question as masque- is it saturday or is it the 29th?

Edit: ^Never mind!^

Edit: So I don't think I'm finishing this this week. I guess it'll turn into a larger project. Here's my current WIP:

Local paramilitary elements have converted indigenous temple ruins on Titan’s third moon into functional facilities, and are currently operating without senatorial dispensation- participating in skirmishes to the south as mercenary units. Several Union officials in the region have requested our intervention.

-Please advise-

@ DeepFried: thanks for the crit, it spurred me to look again at the mid-ground rendering. i gotta admit i got maybe a bit lazy in rendering the forest canopy, so i went in and revised it (see initial post) with more distinct texturing, paying more attention to its scale as you suggested. an improvement, i think. thanks again!

@ Oregano: thanks, m'man! it was fun revisiting a 25-year-old sketch and turning it into new work.

"The tiny sect of the mlkar were seldom seen in the lands surrounding mount karthos... They were too busy keeping the Flame at bay and the gods of the earth sated. It was only the strongest and most fleet of foot who were able to pass from the status of 'sacrifice' to that of initiate of the order. Most historians agree that judging by the sect's daunting rituals, those who died early were actually the lucky ones"

At 10:15pm last night my wife gave birth to our new daughter, Alyssa. We were at the hospital since the afternoon, and I lost the day I had planned to finish my piece. In the hour or two I have now before going back to the hospital, I will make a few last minute additions and post what I can. Obviously this had to take the backseat for the weekend, funny thing is the baby is a couple weeks early. Piece will be up by 3:00pm Pacific time. Wish us luck on our new baby girl, she is beautiful!

Hello!

I'm new here and I intended to participate in this contest, but unfortunately I didn't manage to finish my drawing in time.

It's the first digital drawing I've ever done so far. I used my Wacom a lot for creating textures for games though, so it wasn't all new for me.

This is what I've done so far:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f206/180gee/wip.jpg

Please consider it's wip and there's still a lot of stuff to do. Last but not least, the whole monastery is not done yet.

Obviously I can't finish until deadline, but maybe I'll complete it later (with or without monastery) and post it in the artwork forum.

Anyway you can already give me some c&c, I'll appreciate it ^^

edit: congratulations artiphats!

Thank you guys so much! Your kind words mean a lot to me.

Well here it is, 7 minutes until the deadline. I lost what would have been about 8 hours on it yesterday, but as stated I'll take my new daughter over that 8 hours anyday. For my own happiness I will probably finish it later, but for the sake of posting by 3:00pm, here is what I got: Enjoy :rendered:

The Shuuk Temple of the Miscottii Monks, Deep in the mountains of Jimenii. Not visible in this shot of the main structure, is the tower of Heaven. From this tower leads a stairway, that according to legend, ascends straight to the throne of God. None that have ever began a journey up the stairs have ever returned.
