I feel like I have been a deadbeat dad on these forums lately. I set aside this evening to dig up some old and recent work to post up to let you know that im still alive and kicking.
This first one is a recent stream of consciousness digital drawing. Id like to try to coin a phrase for the digital art movement with this one, the title of this piece is called "the tears" the tears happen usually very late at night in a dark room when you are working feverishly on a digital creation, your hands are scratching away at the wacom so fast that you hardly remember that you have fingers, both eyes are fixed passionately on the glowing screen, it feels as if you are manipulating the pixels directly with your imagination. Time slips away, the music becomes invisible and then it happens. The unblinking eyes that have been focused so intensely on your monitor reach breaking point, they fill with fluid and tears stream down your face. The wet salty drops stream down your face and the physical reminder brings you back into temporal reality and you wipe them off your face.
I haven’t had "the tears" is a while, but I had them while working on this piece. actual sive is 4000x6000 pixels

I cant remember if i have posted these before so forgive me if I have but these are a few of the images im submitting for the spectrum book

Oh yay.
That´s the way, you have to be more frequent from now on then! Really nice portraits all of them, Marko-one was too cool! You really really do have your own style digitally, I haven´t seen anyone do anything like what you do. They look YOURS! Good thing!!! But also in a way a bad thing... Well what the hell do I rant about that, your other works look so different anyway and your digitals are (even though alike) too nice to look at!
...but still would like to see where you can stretch yourself since in your selfportraits there were some which were totally something different! Wonder what you are doing in MB and NOT showing us...

Hi Vicomte,
I like a lot your self portrait, XVIIIth century style, and its strong contrast black/white.(though the subject could be more centered, I think)
The white angel is cool too, a sober effect for a strong impact.
BTW I can't load your website anymore : I saw your fast life drawings on it, awesome, so I feel frustrated not to see them anymore.

wow, Andrew.. Those portraits are really something else... I especially like Marko's portrait but your portrait is really amazing... Looks like something out of a Rob Zombie flick. The like type of dude that would strap down his victims on a examining table and pick at their skin with a fishing hook trying to fins the ripest part to devour.. Damb cool i tell you... Where ever you get the inspiration morph someones face into the portraits you create, I want some of that.. where ever you get it...

Very cool stuff. The first has an almost Steadman feel. I'm into a lot of spiritual writing right now, your work always pops up in my head when I'm reading that stuff. I'd love to see an Andrew piece base on the Bhagavad-Gita (Stephen Mitchell has a really good translation of it). Hell, I'll buy you a copy of that, I think you'd dig it.
Anyway, nice work.

"Lesser evil" and "black angels" are some of the best I've ever seen.

Agreed - it's always Andrew 'Android' Jones...
You are definetly in control of the medium - not the other way around (although I do feel for myself it is somewhat of a dance between artist and medium...perhaps?)
I love the 4 horsemen piece and the bonedawg especially. Good luck with Spectrum :)

Dear Andrew,
you've been my best friend since the first day we met and you changed my life in many ways since that day.
I am glad and proud to watch you grow and prosper, joining you on your adventures and sharing my everyday life with you.
I love you man.
For you other guys, that portrait Andrew made of me has a lot of special meaning and symbolism hidden within the marks and elements which are incorporated in the painting. Andrew didn't just do a portrait of me, but he tried capturing my whole life with this piece of art. Just notice the lovers kissing in my beard, or the skull on the back of my nose. So much thought went into this...

Your first piece is cool , the horse in the middle really intrests me for some reason. 3rd one down is wicked, i really like the shapes of the wings you make.
Portraits are nice as well. I was wondering for a 12 hour painting do you thin your paint at all in the beggining? Im an idiot with oils.
edit: Marko- holy shit i didnt even notice that, now im going to have to see what else i can find in there.

Awesome work as always man. I've come to easily recognize your style and a many of the pieces displayed here have that biomechanical feel to them that I first came in contact with in your Metroid concepts. They possess a foreboding quality which I think stems from the fact that many of your creatures appear to be composed purely of taut sinews and ligaments barely concealed by translucent skin. In some cases, such as the dog shown above, the interior structures are clearly visible. Is exploring the dichotomy of the outer apperance versus that of the visceral inner workings something that you strive towards or is it more of an adopted personal style? Also, were you influenced by Giger's work as I can see elements reminiscent of his creations within your pieces? Keep up the good work man, I await your next contributions eagerly.

Hello Andrew,
Love your two last portraits, particularly these of Marko.
Paradoxically, it seems to me that it is less staged, more true-life.
I can't make myself more clear.:dur: :teeth:
To qualify them, I don't know if that word exist in english, in french we could said :"They are inhabited"...:)

cheers for all of your kind words, my ego thanks you greatly-
Nicolas- thanks nick- Marko and me miss you, im glad you like the dog piece; it’s homage to the nature of addiction.
Art_addict- Ill will make an effort to post more, im happy to hear you can identify with "the tears"
Hurricane- im glad you approve, I consider you to be a very prudent critic ;)
James Kei- wow that really means allot to me man. It’s been beautiful seeing your skills flower; I know have the best seat in the house to whiteness your blooming.
Eriboss- thanks you- the portraits make my soul feel good.
Alday.J - thanks, the Horses piece was an illustration inspired by one of my favorite bands in Austin called the Black Angels http://www.theblackangels.com/ check them out!
fishw - ha-ha, I wish it were that easy, that eye was definitely the turning point on that portrait, and I got the most responses from people at the show about the eye.
stoph- thanks you, sometimes it seems that the farther away I try to get from "my style" the more I find it.
p4b10- thanks Pablo, im a big fan of your work. the white actually began as a totally abstract image, I was meditation on the end of the worlds, and a battle scene between Lucifer and one of his lesser demons began to manifest itself, Marko hates the name but I was calling it "the battle of lesser evil"
Barts- what a way to go
glikster- sniffing heroin is for ladies, its a waste, mainline is the only way to go
pixeldragon - thanks man
AngryScientist,- this style has a long way to go towards perfection , especially since perfection is in itself a total illusion, maybe its there already.
Fut- thanks you. I will have to do some more-
alti- I agree with you, thanks
Hiipi- I think I understand you , as an artist I always want to make something that looks different, but if I create too many different works then they all start to have a sameness? kind of a paradox. oh well , I just do what I do. MB keeps me really busy, all the work posted has been late night and weekend stuff.
thirdeye- I touched briefly on the 3rd painting earlier, its one of the most common archetypes to have a battle between good and evil. I wanted to make a piece where two evil forces were battling each other, If Lucifer could challenge god and become the devil, I imagined a day where one of Lucifer’s demons would in turn confront him as well. man that sounds stoopid when I type it out;)
diego - thanks I learned allot on those 2 portraits
Arctis- thank you, my web server is down, im in the process of trying to build my own website not, and its been an up hill battle. if anyone wants to trade some original for a cool website design im all ears?
Lone Wolf- at the end of the day giving inspiration is the most valuable thing I can offer after giving love, and always better than taking money -
vigostar- thank you, im actually much more sinister than any rob zombie character, I prefer to have my victims alive, and im cunning enough to have them lie down without using any straps at all. the trick is to let them willingly offer me their ripest parts, then I devour their hearts with an insatiable hunger. bon appetite
Foster- Im glad you are responding to the Marko portrait. It by itself was more of a journey than all of the others combined. It was by far one of the greatest technical and conceptual challenges I have faced in a long time. The subject for the show was to create a portrait of your favorite living artist, alive or dead. trying to capture the essence of someone with as much power, strength and complexity as Marko seemed like a Herculean task, in the end I let the stress and pressure melt away and it turned into a labor of love.
strych9ine- thanks, this will be the first time ive ever gotten my shit together to actually enter, ill keep my fingers crossed.
andreasrocha - thank you . I figure the new era of digital art needed some modern catch phrases.
ender - thanks for enjoying it. keep an eye out for any new pick android slippers, my work has been really well received in Turkish supermarkets.
Aether- twisted work from a twisted soul. I have always found the twisted trees in a forest to be so much more beautiful than the tallest straightest trees.
dv8- thank you-
Shnyru- Im dedicating allots more of my time to the analog realm. I actually have lots of sketchbook pages . I will post some of those soon as well.
JTJ- thanks josh, my worlds falls apart on a daily basis, my oil portrait is still at the gallery, once I get it back I will take some higher rez photos for ya.
Scubasteve- thank you, the 4th piece is dedicated to the spirit of EVE, the first one is a series of doodles. I had a frenzy of apocalyptic rants running through my head and I had to get them out. Living in sf feels like I have a front row seat to the end of the world.
doughbot- wow, thanks allot, what a complement. I try to incorporate a spiritual element in allot of my personal work. I would love to illustrate some of the concepts of the Bhagavad-Gita. if you buy me one ill read it and dedicate a piece for you. if you’re into spiritual reading I highly suggest the words of one of the most profound spiritual teachers I have ever read. his name is Echart Tolle
http://www.eckharttolle.com/home.php?section=about&show=ABOUT%20-%20Power%20of%20now I have been working on a series of images to illustrate his teachings.
CallOps- awwe , that’s sweet of you.
Carnifex- thanks carnie, I think I posted all the pics that I have so far
you will have to wait for Montréal for another photo op
Elwell- ha-ha, thanks sonny-boy. when you consider that the world of form is just an illusion the argument between pixels vs. paints melts away. sill I miss my undo when dealing with the primitive pigments. and I miss my chaos when im manipulating my ones and zeros. balance and moderation is the key to happiness.
MorteM -im happy they impress you, I wasn’t sure if Jason had posted them in the giant MB thread. Spectrum is an annual book dedicated to fantasy and fiction art. its kink of like the contempory bible of unicorns, dragons and aliens.
pencilator-its just Marko- kisses
Craig D - have fun. thanks
Loomer- thanks man. it may look like I can control the mediums I actually strive for the state of mind and spirit where the mediums control me. that always where I create the best work.
StrangeAlchemist. the show should be up for a few more days, there are lots of awesome portraits at the show, definitely check it out
Mr. Blonde - thanks, I will try to scan the other portrait once I get it back. its actually still "for sale" at the gallery.
van bot- ill take your breath over a compliment any time.
vctr- what can I say im a fan of over saturation.
Marko- you are always my best critic and friend. I cant even imagine how radically different my work and my life would look today without your influence. cheers my friend.
Kresh_ on the 12-hour painting I did start off really thin with oils and turpentine until I felt comfortable with the likeness and the shapes. then I put in the highlights with more opaque paint. someday ill have the balls for more of an ala prima style.
Kain3001 oh I fail all the time, sometimes daily, but my failures are my greatest teacher. success never teaches me anything except how to be a jerk.
Nexus_ I love big replies like yours. very insightful. its impossible to be a contemporary artist without being influenced by artists like giger. but as far as influences I don’t consider giger to be at the top of my list, or at least I don’t want to admit it. as far as the sinews and anatomy I was heavily influenced by my experience in medical school where I dissected cadavers. I have always been fascinated by the macro and the micro-cosims of the human and animal form. the beautiful of death and decay. if there is one universal truth in this world is that everything eventually fades away.
Sparthie- I live to haunt you;)so when are you coming of to sf? the whole MB crew misses you.
I know what you mean by getting shaken. I believe we both share a similar approach to the abstract digital creation process. I don’t think I would want it any other way. I always prefer reaching a conclusion in a painting that I could have never expected that arriving at the shadow of a preconceived dream.
VirusArtist- im glad I could bring resolution to the mystery.
Jworion- thanks, its so funny how conditioned the word is to the coming apocalypse because if you look closer there are actually 5! horseman, and they are actually angels.
ElvisMcVegas- moments of tears is what makes life worth living.
Grooveholmes- anytime man.
Interceptor- I just noticed your avatar. that’s awesome- im glad that my nightmares can satisfy your dreams .
rWDrk- thanks, I have been on a big horse drawing kick lately.
AgAtA- the Marko portrait was a really impulsive creative process. I struggled for weeks over what I was going to paint. I left it down to the last weekend before the show. I sat him down in my favorite chair and began by making a drawing from life of his face. he left, and I locked the door and turned off my phone and drew continually for about 14 hours. I hit a point where I just stopped thinking about what I was doing and let my hand take over. there were moments where I was just watching my hand draw like I was enjoying a film. I hit a point of "no_mind" where the drawing told me what it wanted to be. it became like a giant dance.
I have been loving your recent work allot. give JS a big kiss for me.
Mert_yavasca_ im so glad you get that much out of it, cheers
Danomight_ any time, thank you for appreciating it.
Dutton_ ha ha . like I said before im working on a long overdue website update. It’s a trip opening up painter and seeing my work. whenever it happens I feel like I better step up to the plate. whenever I see Dan milligans work I want to hide under a rock;)
redehlert_ daddy loves you, way more than his other girlfriends and her kids. checks in the mail I promise.
Jeff Jaws, it was fun putting the make up on, something meditational about painting my face then making a painting of my face.

Android! I get the tears when i look at your art. what can i say? there's something in your art that realy sticks out beyound technique, design, drawing and all. it's passion, love and dedication. When I've your work on my screen passion, love and dedication should literally start dripping out of it! i do not only feel inspired, i feel the same passion, love and dedication you put in your work in me right now. that's something that does not happen with a lot of artist's work.
especially your portrait of marko blows me away.

Your work is mesmerizing of technique and knowledge of every assembly of forms and colors. Each pose and expression translates a feeling, and there's nothing useless in each of those pics.
Im just impressed by the ease you have to retranscribe your visions, and how you play with with everything you've learn till now.

janni- this is going to be the last response for tonight , Reading your response warms me from the inside out. Being an artist can be a big responsibility and a twisted road, I am guilty of squandering a large part of my artistic efforts in the pursuit of financial gain, ego indulgence, I often dip into the dark side and use my art for sex. These are things that I am not proud of and at the same time I cannot deny their truth. The fact is I will most likely continue towards these shallow pursuits. but on my path into debauchery there are moments where I somehow manage to abandon my self-seeking goals and surrender to a place and a state of mind beyond gratification, beyond the "little me". its a place of love and pressence where I stop fighting life or even stop trying to live life and simple put let life live through me. Marko’s portrait captured that moment. It’s a blessing that I can share that love with you NOW, and a gift to me that you can receive it. Thank you for reminding me of the places my true path can lead. (end gushy rant)

the respect for intuition is very apparent in your paintings, and it makes it interesting as an audience to see... very few people allow their viewers into their thought process so well. Seeing the Marko portrait in person was cool as well, I enjoyed sifting through the thoughts it provoked.

Andrew, thank you for your reply - it's very interesting to know the story behind your paintings. Thanks you for sharing the new ones - the "red tit" is my favourite - I like how lack of spiritual background makes it free for interpretation. I'll be looking forward to see those sketchbook pages you mentioned. You are a huge inspiration for me. Take care :)

Im with Dan but, i'd fear you would need to slow down waaay too much for me.. fantastic... You know when I made that comment about your demon prince piece I really didnt understand where you were going with your artwork and therefore made the crit. after being around these boards and being exposed to a plethora of different artist Im starting to understand what it means to create something different. Although when we grow as artists we try to be that "something different" 9 times out of ten we end up like the rest but, sometimes, just sometimes and artist comes around and you sit back and say "hey, now this is fucking cool"! My hats off to you my friend. Good luck in your future projects..

Is there any way to see a photo of the portrait of Johna?I mean a front view, right now its kind of tilted. Im a total portrait freak, i absolutely love drawing portraits and watching them especially what you have made. so far that i have understood that u use a reddish-orange color pencil for under-drawing and then go over with usual and other color pencils? also the under-drawing pencil gives a warm skin tone? I would really appreciate it if you could answer even one of these questions. :)

What always amazes me is the lengths you go to for your art. You seem to put your whole self into your work and give nothing less than your all. You have such a deep resource of passion for your art that you take extensive time for your personal work as well as Massive Black. Even more so you want share your skill with the world and teach us regularly through the workshops. That's dedication.
And I really appreciate that.
The added fact that your art is kickass is just painfully motivating!:bashful:

I had the privilege to see some of these images when you came in Paris and it's so cool to have a trace of all this beautiful art now.
I'm having trouble with my state of "Tears" these days. Can't manage to concentrate on my feelings, opening the shakras you know kind of stuff... life sometimes simply don't permits it. But when I saw those pieces, I kinda remembered what it's like to feel free painting before the screen. Awesome. Especially the Marko potrait.
This thing about spirituality. I want to belive that there's something more, that we aren't just made of atoms reacting to each other. It's a subject I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I do belive there must be some sort of spirituality, something that makes us the ones we are. But I haven't seen anything that would prove to me that's how it is.
I'm starting to get tears, this subject is sensitive for me, I don't know what I should think.

My God Andrew, ur work has gone thru such a beautiful metamorphisis over the years. Whatever spritual entities that are guiding your hands have obviously been serving their purpose. I hope that you will continue to allow this transformation to take place and to keep allowing your subconscious thoughts to manifest themselves onto the visual plain for all of us to see. Whether you truly understand it or not, you have been such a great silent mentor for so many of us out here. Thank you oh so much...

It's a rare thing to experience in this industry and within the entertainment field... but my hopes is that the tide is changing and evolving. I know this sounds sappy but you, right now, are my absolute favorite artist. I don't want to just add more praise the big steaming pile but I'm afraid it's all well warranted. I could go on about your ability, as I could for many others here at CA, but what I appreciate the most is that you have an incredible sense of ambiance, gesture and subtlety that speaks volumes. Everything sort of has this maddening texture that provides the perfect amount of chaos to a point where there's nothing sterile about any part of your images. Things like the geometric shapes contrasting against your kinetic brushwork and the luminosity that seams to float over the cooler dark forms of your characters. It's a good kind of conflict. You know, you elevate the whole genre of concept art to something with deeper meaning and soul to it.
Shit, man, it's really just that you never fail to surprise me. I sure envy the people you rub off on directly.

Andrew, I've noticed you often use concentric circles as part of the background "noise" of forms. Is there some specific reason for that/significance to it, or was it just a, "I need something....circular...here" kinda decision?
Anyway, nice work as always...the sketch of the 3 parts of the psyche I found particularly interesting. The transition in form, from angular and geometric/pain to flowing and smooth/dreamer is a nice conceptual nod. The psychological aspects of aesthetics are facinating. Did you make up the Dreamer, Observer, Painbody catregories yourself? They kind of remind me of some ideas found in transpersonal psychology. You also mentioned reaching a state of "no-mind" while working on the Marko portrait, and ego-trancending experiences are a key interest in transpersonal psych.
Do I smell a closet transcendentalist? ;)

Awesome stuff, i really like the one of Marko. Is there any chance that we can get that screensaver that you made during the insomania workshop? or maybe just the drawing you did when you were in the big drawing dome? keep on truckin'

Hey Andrew,
Your artwork can be fairly dark and foreboding at times, but I can really connect to the spiritual aspects of your work. I particularly like these :

I'd love to see more of your analog art, the portraits are beautiful.
