ROUND #13
:right: PLEASE CONSOLIDATE YOUR WIPS AND FINALS INTO YOUR FIRST POST.
:right: CLEARLY DESIGNATE YOUR FINAL.
-------------------------
DEADLINE
MONDAY, JANUARY 23st - may be a day or so late.
9 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
--------------------------
Lord George Henry Fredrickson
Historical Fiction*
Lord George Henry Fredrickson. Mid to late 1800's. Lord Fredrickson is a Lich hunter & Master of the Occult of some quiet acclaim in certain discerning circles. By nature he is a reserved man, brutally intelligent, quick in thought and often in action, but never reckless.
Cursed more than a century ago by an Egyptian Lich, Lord Fredrickson walks the twilight between the true light of life and the enternal darkness of death. He can not die, though he can not really live either.
With each Lich Lord Fredrickson dispatches, he desperately searchers for a counter curse to his affliction, but none have been found, much to his continued frustration. Over the past few decades, his searches have turned more desperate, as madness is slowly claiming him. In his more lucid moments, he fears for those he cares for, but holds little hope of chaging his fortunes. Isabelle, his wife, has been instructed in the art of horcrux destruction, and how to kill a Lich, but as Lord Fredrickson has no known horcrux, it is feared that all efforts will be futile.

So are we allowed to somewhat make more of a "portrait" of him? if it includes shoulders? Because that's what I was sort of going for, but I know you're usually supposed to have most of the figure showing.

Sorry about that Shane, I was operating on a misconception, very much the one Define described. I thought like 75 percent of the figure had to be showing..or some number like that...therefore I figured it wouldn't be taken to poll. However, if you want to...cool, consider my hat in there.
Central: thanks, can wait to see your entry.
Red: Bro you don't know how many mirrors I busted with my ugly mug just for this likeness...I think it's up to 140 years of bad luck or something close to it. My grandkids will be paying off my foul mojo debt...LOL... Thanks man.
Edit: P.s. philosophical question...if this work is included in the final poll would this start a precedent that others might submit something that does not fit all the criterion in the guidelines and is withheld from inclusion in the poll and turn around and say "Well his was included why not mine?" type of thing. I wouldn't want to be the one to start that type of thing. So if you feel that my not adhering to the criterion set forth in the guidelines is such that it prohibits me from being placed in the poll then so be it...I will leave the decision up to you Shane.

Howdy all,
OK, firstly I just wanna say how in awe of Chuck,Mate's work I am AGAIN, stunning stuff :D
Now to mine... :^^;:
I'm really not sure with this one, I think with this one I was far to conscious of making it a "companion piece" to Lady Isabelle (look at 'em together sometime :D ) and deliberately tried to give it an opposite feeling (in composition, atmosphere etc...)
As a result of this I feel I really tightened up, and lost a lot of the fluidity the first one had (plus I couldn't get his shoulders to look hunched right) As for the background, I guess I was trying to hint a some kind of location without spelling it out, and made a total hash of it.
Still, there are several things that I feel have worked on this one, so I figured what the hell, put it up and get some second opinions. Enjoy...
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6049/dazimageshackchow13lhf7qj.jpg
OK guys,
As you know I wasn't happy with my original... So I gave it another go :D
Still not 100% on it, but I think I captured what I was intending better (Although I STILL have no idea what to do with the background ;) ) Please treat this as my actually entry, Thanks :D

Uziel, Lord Fredrikson isn't a common men. The only thing I didn't want to do, was to represent him like any normal man of the 1800. He's extravagant, independent, can do what he pleases when he pleases (he has money and power) and he certainly doesn't care about many things in life any more. The way he dresses must reflect all this.

hey daz,
i'm diggin' where you're goin' with your entry - one thing i'd say since you're showing such taut tendons of the right hand is to put your hand in that pose with a bat or someting similar and consider how much tension you need to create to get those tendons to pop. all things considered, that's the 'lighter' end of the weapon and would be a little less tendonous as a result.
one other thing with that right hand is that the fingers need to curl around the weapon. at present, they bend but there is a distance between the shaft and the finger curl. do you see it?
btw, i like the clothing folds in the vest and the colors are workin' nicely. perhaps some blood on the weapon to draw the eye from the vest to the weapon would be worthwhile?
cheers!

Chuck, mate maybe the best answer is your signature? "Reality means you live until you die. The real truth is nobody wants reality."
dear DummyNose....if you only had ANY idea what this quote truely means and where it`s from.
all i said was a concept brief was given to you specifying
the era of this specific character. there`s nothing wrong
with an open mind and an open interpretation, as long as it answers the description`s demands.
if your portraying of old George here is not 1800s clothing and style - your concept art is not bad nor good - it`s just the wrong concept.
why a male 1800s lich? cause the decription demands it to be.
you might as well draw a 1980s female Belly Dancer.
k?
Uziel
January 18th, 2006, 08:14 AM
Dominus please show us your interpretation of the description.
My point of view: when someone asks me to draw an 1800's lord I would stick close to references of that period. For in that period a lord would probably loose his title for alienating from the rest of high society. Now, you don't have to agree with me on this one. Show me that I'm wrong on this and draw me a real nice Lord GH Frederickson because i do promote creativity. :rendered:

Oregano, i ask you, why are ppl easily offended here, i`ve noticed everybody uses the word fuck and all that shit, but if i say 'shut the fuck up' then there is a problem? Why there is a "STFU" smiley then? My point was not to restrict the theme to EXACTLY what the briefing said, but to be a little open minded and create new original things. alright, here's my VERY TINY WIP, it's much bigger than that. I just can't find away to put it on the internet quickly to just show it off right now.
question: is how much I've got of him okay, or do I have to give him some legs?

I'm seeing a good amount of excellent stuff. Tingling sensation on my fingertips as I type. Lots of potential but I haven't really seen anything I really like yet even from WIP pieces.
I'll talk about a few here and there.
Blue - Get outta here! :P Go away you're complicating voting matters!! (Just kidding dude) Since you didn't submit last week's ChOW, maybe you might want to sneak in your Lady Isabelle somewhere....only if you want to. Coz I'm kinda interested in seeing what you'll have for us :teeth:
Chuck - I was sorta expecting your Freddy to actually link to your Lady Isabelle submission. It would be really cool to see them side by side. But I think this week's submission is a little darker and less "fun" that what you went with for Lady Isabelle. I like it, but still holding my breath for a bit more.
DazWartford - Looks consistent with last week's entry. I can totally visualize him riding on another camel next to his wife.
Vim - I'm likeing how it turns out, although - no offense - I'm not too hot with the perspective. It seems like you're forcing the figure to warp because you laid out your VP on the page instead of having it somewhere off the page. Errr, what's that term.....Yeah, "lines converge too early". That usually distorts the figure such that it looks disproportionate even thought "mathematically" its correct because you followed your VP.
Helzon - I'm gonna protest if that's your final LOL. Would love to see the full body development. And looking at your backstory, dammit it better be a in a photo frame! :D
Cognition - That shit is creepy. Did they really wear that to worship in churches?
Redehlert - Coming along fine, waiting to see the final development.
Sady - I like how Freddy is turning out on your piece. One of only 2 pieces that really IMHO hit the character brief provided. (The other one is Chuck's).
That's it for now. Almost 3am and I gotta go read up on the aerodynamics of bird flight. I'll put something up by Friday morning though I don't think its gonna change the landscape much.

Heh, cheers - mission accomplished. Well, kind of, I neglected to mention it was worn in Switzerland. Also, on a second look at the reference I've noticed the text below: "Woman in Mourning"
hahah, darn ambiguous illustrations :S

Well... I guess it's a tribute to how crazy he really is. Although one of the reasons I chose that outfit was to conceal his curse.
I might have to change his name to Georgina for any public appearances...

Redelert - awesome portrait of Lord Fredrickson, closest by far to what I think he'd look like...
Right, i'm gonna try and complete this CH.O.W, as I started painting Lady Fredrickson, but didnt finish on time.
Theres some good sketches in here, that obviously need to be work on.
IMO - It would be nice to see more work related to the brief. I know some of you guys just want to do your own thing, but try and use the brief-with your own creativity-as a helpful guide line to how the end concept will look like; see these particular forums as short projects to test the way you deal with a structured brief; it can give you some grounding as to how this concept-art-thang works...:)
Ok, you can correct me if you think Im wrong, but please do it constructively, as you dont want me to come round your house...:needle:

Howdy all :D
Firstly, let me say I’m not trying to get at anyone (especially not you Molly, you just happened to be the last person to post regarding interpretation) but, I’m new here and I’m getting a little confused as to what CHOW is supposed to be about?
For my entry, I took the “Cursed more than a century ago by an Egyptian Lich” part, and extrapolated that this had put Lord Fredrickson’s life in to a “Highlander” style limbo, so I tried to present him as a 1700s guy in 1800s clothes (which would also allow him to land a foxy, young, mortal wife ;) ) although I have tried to hint at some kind of moral and physical decay around his eyes and in his hands. I also read about destroying an “object” to destroy a Lich on Wikipedia, and figured an Egyptian Lich’s would be one of those “Jar” type things the organs go in during Mummification, hence the Sledge Hammer :D
I feel that I’ve stuck to the description, just maybe interpreted it at a tangent? I guess I’m just slightly worried if that’s allowed now?
Maybe Oreg or someone could clear up just how much interpretation in OK? Is the point of CHOW to stick quite tightly to the brief, but just to refine the costume and detail of the character, or portray him/her in a specific setting?
Like I say, no offence meant to anyone, I’m honestly just trying to get some clarification :D
Thanks

Dominus, I don't know where you're located, or if you're ESL (English as a Second Language) or not, but STFU is considered an "in your face" retort. It has it's place, which is why we have it, but that place is not in response to advice or picture crits. The way you used it was not appropriate, and would have ended up with you getting your ass kicked in real life.
While the brief is open for interpetation, as you so eloquently pointed out, Uziel and others were politely letting you know that they thought you might be drifting a tad too far from it. Their comments were presented with your best interests in mind, and without offense.
Your response to him, and to others from what I've read, was not appropriate.
This has nothing to do with originality - it has everything to do with the attitude that we bring to the activity.
Keep it nice.

I feel that I’ve stuck to the description, just maybe interpreted it at a tangent? I guess I’m just slightly worried if that’s allowed now?
Daz, your entry is fine. So don't stress it.
The descriptions have, admittedly, been a little soft of late. I figured that people would like to have a little more freedom to move. However, this is turning out to have complications of its own that I didn't foresee.
Usually they descriptions will be fairly tight, with very specific aspects of the character that need to developed or illustrated.
However, all of this is left open for the illustrator to show us what they're made of. As a guideline, you are supposed to keep fairly close to the brief, however, it is not necessary - so long as there is some clear connection to the brief, an image will be taken to poll.
If, for example, the brief calls for a futuristic scientist, and you do a picture of a Neanderthal, chances are that your picture will not go to poll.
Chow is an excercise in creatively following guidelines. In other words, unless there is something *specific*, some triat, characteristic, color of hair/skin/eyes/etc., article of clothing, mannerism, what-have-you that is specifically called for in the brief, it's open.
In regards to this weeks' brief, the 1800's/open for interpetation was just that. You could do a steampunk 1800's (which is really what I thought most people would lock onto) or anything else. I was purposefully vague to see who would come up with what.
Bottom Line: Read the brief carefully. Important points will be mentioned. Everything else, so long as it fits with the character or brief, is open.
Hope that helps to clear things up some.
~Oreg.
S.C. Watson
January 19th, 2006, 11:33 AM
I know this won't get taken to poll, but just couldn't resist.
*Edit-Oregano et al. Rest assured this was a one off and will not happen again. Thought it would give flavor to the competition, not detract from it. I will be sure that in the future any entries I submit will adhere to the rules.
Cheers!
Helzon, after seeing what you have done with this, I may very well make a *rare* exception and take this to the poll. I'm really impressed with what you've done. You've managed to pull this off in a very creative manner, and I like that. It's unexpected, and fresh. You've taken the brief and ran with it, and that's what we're looking for.
Good work.
You'll know if I decide or not when we do poll
Cheers,
~Oreg.

To all that have commented on my piece thus far - I am franky...humbled!
A lot of my research is going in the development of medicine back in the early to late 19th century, but the gent's face I have chosen to work with is from a wonderful old photo ref collection called the Fairburn series. You know, when you have something in your head, it just pays to use all of your resources. That said, I had the Lord in my head, but could not create such a visage without assistance. Friends have said to me - play on your strengths. One of mine is research. ;) I too hope it will play out nicely. Many, many thanks for inspiring me to do more.

red Gorgeous rendering on that face! Really wonderful - and that perspective is tough to pull off, but you did it. Keep going - I'm going to expect great things from you ;)
orcatraz Love it so far! I don't really have a problem with any lack of lich-ness on his part - he looks perfectly lichy to me. Of course, I had no clue what a lich was before I started this CHOW anyway. I'm not a D&D fan :perv:

Yeah I'm trying to go the subtle route this time, plus the lady Fredrickson description said that his lich-ness was a secrete, so I didn't see him as a zombie or anything. Basically my goal was to convey the story with mood alone. I don't know if it will work or not.
She knows his secret, and has sworn an oath of secrecy

No, I wasn't suspecting to see a zombie here. But the curse must be a heavy burden. I think (but this is entirely my own opinion) that it would be great to see your character suffering from something. Very subtle, but clear enough to see he's burdened with something.
But as I said, this is only my idea, and I'd better drawn my own Lord and let you do yours :-) Enough!

Hey, orcatraz, I think your concept looks lovely so far! He really looks like an 1800s man (which is important according to the brief!) I was thinking, though, that maybe since you want to have a subtle picture, you might do something in the picture that catches the eye, and reveals his secret. Maybe his shadow could be in the shape of some evil undead? Or maybe his hand could be sending magic through the glass case, and causing the creature's skeleton to awaken? For the magic idea, you could have the magic be red or something, and have points on light in the creature's eyes.
Hope I sparked some ideas! And I really hope you finish it up!
Redehlert, I really love the head you painted. I, too like to do tons of research on things like clothing when I'm working on a picture. Thanks for the reference! Also, I know of two great books by Daniel Blum that you might like. One is A History of Theater, and the other is A History of the Talkies. I think those are the right titles.
I won't be entering this contest, but maybe next time Oregano gives us something like this I will be able to. Good luck, everyone!

It's funny you mention that because I had put a skull in his shadow but I guess it's not visible enough. I do plan on putting in as many clues as I can while keeping him human looking. I like your Ideas though, a couple of them I had had myself. I was thinking about incorporating some ancient evil spells hidden on the walls too.
Thanks for your help.

Hi guys. In the last minute I was convinced to make a pic ofmy own of sir George. So I tried to keep close to the description and to keep track of a few things: first, aldo a lich, he would have to move amongst humans. So he should be fairly human. Second - clothing; and third - he was a Lich Hunter, so not eather a weak or old man. So I go with a skinny face and burning undead eyes for the lich part, long hair and a redingote (I don't know the english word for this) - they were in style through the mid and late 1800 and some strong features for the hunter part. Droped it a bit of frown and madness and here I present you sir George H. Fredricks:

I was reading the brief again and I thought maybe he feels a little pissed off and unfair that his condition doesn't improve even though he's been getting rid of millenia old liches left and right. So I sneaked Isabelle in there to comfort him. :teeth:

I may have taken the master of occult a bit to far, but heres my picture of lord freddy taking the life essense from a lowly victim, was thinking he needed youthful looks to keep/get a wife. Also, he's a lord so he has to keep up appearences and i dont think he could do that looking half dead. He struck me as the kind of person that wouldn't mind killing some random person from some of the scummier parts of a city. Though for a lord to travel to these parts without an escort would be unheard of, hence using the long black robe as a disguise. He isn't a cral man however, what he does, he does out of neccesary, his fight against lich's takes a toll, plus whos going to miss a few lowly pieces of scum. by killing them hes also making the city safer and a more pleasent place to live in

jumpin' in with both feet, here, with the final chapter of my version of the tale of Lord and Lady Fredrickson...
http://www.metrocast.net/~chipartist/ImagePost/LordGHFchowWeb.jpg
From the diary of Lady Isabelle Frederickson
December 22, 1873
London
For more than a month since the destruction of the wretched creature that cursed my dearest Henry, I have watched for signs that the burden upon his soul has been lifted, but in vain. He is worsening! Yet there is still hope, if the dreams and visions that have visited me since then can be trusted.
I fear I have been afflicted by some demon of deception, but nonetheless hold more and more to the conviction that Henry's fate and mine are bound more tightly than by just the sacrament of marriage. I have seen us together in many ages past, among people of ancient and arcane aspect; we have walked together among cities long gone to ruin and dust; we have battled evil at each other's side since time was new.
And in all those past lives, I realize I have been not just his wife, companion, and ally, but also his deepest bane, the bearer of his uncursed soul, a living horcrux, necessary so that he can battle the diseased lich-things without fear of destruction, and yet, inevitably, leaving the soul-shard he bears open to their unholy contamination.
And now once again I face the greatest agony of my many lives, for my dear Henry cannot continue as he is, miserable and failing, to be entirely consumed by the taint of the evil he has battled for over a century. Now I must, as I have countless times before, take up his holy dagger, and free his unblemished soul, so that we may reunite in eternity until we are once again called to our earthly task. I thank the ancient powers for their supreme wisdom, for I know I could not strike you down, my love, but to save us both, I bring myself willingly to the sacrifice.
I go now beyond the veil, to await the moment Henry withdraws the sacred dagger from my breast, and thus opens the gateway for his salvation.
I go without fear.

Hey people,
Just a note to let you know that I'm going to extend the deadline by a couple of days (Let's say Monday) because I'm going to be on the road the next couple of days and I don't think I'm going to have Internet access. So, take the time to really polish your guy!
Cheers all,

That's fantastic! Btw, is there any way you can retrieve your work after you've accidently cut the power to your computer? I know that's a total noob question and i'm sure the answer is none, but i have to ask.

First off, I wish I had gotten around to entering last week's competition...I think I would've appreciated oregano's play even more so! Some brilliant work so far this round, and more to come, I'm positive of that. My early favs:
bluefooted - nice tarot! the coloring is very un-bluefooted
redehlert - love that face...especially in the closeup you had posted earlier. your skills continue to improve dude.
orcatraz - jesus man, that is looking tight! the reflection is nice, but the display case and pet vulture are what put the image over the top for me. great job.
pixelherder - I like your Lord too, but my favorite part of the image is that gigantic friggin' skull behind him. Might be a fun exercise to visualize that thing with flesh on it, just for kicks.
hurricane - you never cease to impress...what else is new? the hat's a nice touch...made me laugh.
Angry Pirate - Shiiiiiit, wish I'd been able to drop a first post like that! Like it a lot dude...post hard, post often!
morbidhumor - The image seems little more than a sketch, but it's hugely effective. The superimposed skull could look cheesy, but you've nailed it, and I love the cobra-head cane.
masque - I love images that tell a story. Might've been even better if you hadn't included the text, and let the image tell the whole tale.
ericdee - is that goul giving the Lord a purple nurple? hehe
Anyhow, now that the deadline is extended, I'm looking forward to see a lot more fantastic work. My entry doesn't stand up to all the great work that's been posted already, but it's a little different than the rest. I was most intrigued by the mention in the brief that Lord Fredrickson had been cursed by an Egyptian Lich, so I've depicted Lord Freddy during his desert travels. Hope you dig.

I think the "contact shadow" was purposefully left out :dur:
@ Orcatraz - agree with endregan...looks really good....love the subtle shadow of his.
You guys suck....Every week I have to go thru the ordeal of voting for excellent entries. :teeth:

Woo, extended deadline. That means I can finally finish something to enter these things with. Hah!
My entry. I just hope the contrast is alright. I tend to have a little trouble with my monitor calibration, so hopefully it's not too low.

Lovely entries!
Pan: flawless character, but the table and the props could use a bit of work since they are off perspective i.e not aligned with the horizon line...

Main Loop. The entry looks great and many things now have sense. His pose and gesture, for example. If you still have time and want to, I have a comment for you. Rail ( or banister) doesn't connect behind the Lord Fredrickson back, I wish you work more on his face , specifically his eyes. This area is a bit indefinite, dark, in my opinion. Overall. it's a great painting with evening atmosphere. I feel like I 'm standing near in the picture.

Hello people :). Here is Lord George Henry Fredrickson Hagi Dracula >:D .... He is some kinf sort of vampire because he has no reflection in the mirror or any material that reflects. The explenation ins't known, but peoples says that he lost his reflection in the Mirror of Gods. :bashful:. Oh, well here it is the illustration and excuse me for my english. HAI ROMANIA !!! :spam:

It's funny you mention that because I had put a skull in his shadow but I guess it's not visible enough.
I caught the skull right away and really loved it, thought it was perfect. So there's another opinion for you.
