hmm try taking pictures of something that is more colorful
play around with DOF/DOP
use a better light source, taking pictures with an digital cam when it's dark
produces lot's of noise in the picture

"Spaceships From Venus"
more of this less of the other :)
if you try to get some more details in to this photograph
it will be great, maybe more of the bluish as well

First off - i definately see improvement in these pictures!

I really like the first one - well except for one thing.

There is a problem that runs through many of these photos and it is that just a little bit of something gets cut off by the edge of the picture. The clock in the first one, a little bit of the bar over the drain (not such a big deal), and the very side of the street liight in Sun Dance. The most distracting is the clock though - it detracts from what otherwise is a great picture. Several of these pictures have a more professional feel to them - like the clock one and the billboard. The drain is nice, but it has an amatuerish feel - i believe its because of the light source. It looks like a flash (may not have been) and perhaps its just me but often flashes tend to make photographs feel a bit unprofessional (well except properly set up flash/lighting kits)

I agree with what Shade said.

I dont agree with this:

Why is more colorful any better? Imho color is a shortcut to making the image nice to look at. If it has any real substance it will still be great with less color. Thats why good black and white photos are often more powerful and meaningful than they would be in color. Color can make a photo better and more appealing but it will not make a bad photo good.

The detail and sharpness in the clock tower is very good, the photograph has a very "clean" feel. Good progress, give us more!

Number two is your best one of this group. The other ones have a lot of noise and it seems hard to spot a focal point or theme in any of them but the second one.

Morbid,
color is crucial in every picture, even in black and white pictures.
I'm not capable to explain this, I'll try to get someone else to do it :)

I dont understand, isn't color, by definition, lacking in a B&W photo? Do you mean values?

I Believe The Clocks one is the best of this lot, i dont think it needs to be changed. It could have used a tiny bit of the clock to the left.

I understand what you are saying Barret about the color- However, this is the mood of these pictures, I didnt want any flashy colors. Also, the pictures detiriorate greatly upon uploading. I dont get it. Can anyone explain why the pictures lose their quality and how that can be solved? I use Image shack by the way.

Madpencil, with out any mockery or anything, can u please explain what a theme of a picture means? I have trouble understanding that term.

Shade of dawn: You are absoloutly right, i am still working on perfecting the edges. Thank you for your tip. The drain one didnt have any flash on- i tweaked the highlights and made them more powerful to give you a cold metallic feel to the picture.
Here's another picture that doesnt cut any edges:

Thank you all for your comments, I am now a better Photographer :teeth:

at photo bucket.com the pictures get compressed if the size exes KB
maybe image shack got the same thing, then it's better to resize them yourself

Hmm, thanks barret! i'll ponder upon that for a while. I played with the last picture, and this is what i came up with. Tell me if it looks amateur-ish.

the tower looks much higher,
and you got some impressionistic impression with the green smudge.
but i don't think green is the best color tho present this picture

I thought, green or blue would be the most excentric colors used to portray a church tower. So i took green. and voila..!
