got the scanner back, finally can start this thing... here's a few oldies for starters (have to keep the best ones for site but these are as good). the pencil scans horribly so i think i'll experiment with ink later on. anyways:

Real nice Lung. Now you give me another thread to constantly check!
Is the first post all ref work??.
The last is a obviously concept/personal and is primo.

Keep em coming man.

PS I was just talking with my folks about cruisen through Croatia sometime this year or early next... after I travel around Northern Europe etc.
Have to keep you in mind eh.

stephenc: yeh wes most definitely had a tremendeous influence on me

aveh: seb rules. will do

lukias: yeah it's all ref work, trying to work purely from life lately. building up a mental database, mastering the pencil technique and stuff. cruisin thru croatia eh? that would rule!

metalwinds: concepts... sure. i'll post some tomorrow or the day after

holy shizm!
Great to see some studies, I'm (well was 10 days ago and will soon) really getting into the study stuff myself. Funny for the amount of ref work I've done I'm starting to wonder how much of it I have been retaining and how much I'm simply copying... if you catch my drift.

The non ref'd pieces are primo man, seems to me you retain the info pretty damn well!.

Keep em coming hot shot!

I'd like to think this might inspire me to make my sketchbook more like this... I don't do nearly enough study work there (although I can calm myself down by telling myself I am in regular lifedrawing classes).

Thx d00d keep it up, don't let us get lazy!

today i slept in late, then a friend came and i had no time to draw at all :bash: . we saw some dvd's (attack of the clones, enemy at the gates, shiri), so you might recognize some of these in the sketches soon.

thanks peeps. sketch, i'll think a bit and post em in the next update. i have a lot of weird methods :)

---

here's a decent update i hope. i felt like doing one so i did a process showing how i make these sketches. pencil and color.
http://lungbug.ice.org/sketchsteps01.jpg

http://lungbug.ice.org/sketchsteps02.jpg

http://lungbug.ice.org/sketchsteps03.jpg

http://lungbug.ice.org/sketchsteps04.jpg

and for the coloring part:
http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep00.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep01.jpg

http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep02.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep03.jpg
i copy the base sketch to a separate layer and set it to multiply. then i fill in a opaque background depending on a few factors. first, mood. warm vs. cold, everyone can figure that out. then, i think of what colour would i want to make my biomecha. since i chose yellows/greens, i decided to put the complementary color in the bg, to stand out a bit. so i put a bit darker desaturated red. with a bit darker color and a big soft brush i filled in the main shadow areas. also, using the same brush, i threw in a few desaturated spots to make things more interesting.

http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep04.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep05.jpg
now i use a textured brush i made to fill in the local colors. on the metal parts i did a lot of color variation (notice how it goes warmer as it turns away from the light). the body also has some green/yellow/orange variation. with a gritty pencil brush i proceed to render out the headgear (pencil brush makes more texture). for the skin i use a soft round brush. i still work mostly in the midtones range of value.

http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep06.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstep07.jpg
this part is just pushing it forward. i add some brighter highlights. nothing much to say. later, when i'm done i'll optionally use an outline to show the sillhouette of the beast. this can be good, but it can be bad too. it works well in the darker areas that disappear in the background. i chose brighter orange/red to contrast the rather washed out colors i used on the rest.

http://lungbug.ice.org/colorstepg.jpg http://tonchyz.ice.org/colorstepcu.jpg
during the coloring, i'll often convert it to grayscale to check if the values are all right. if the grayscale doesn't look right, colored stuff won't either. the second pic shows a zoomed in headgear. you can notice a lot of different colors, but check the grayscale - there's a quite smooth transition. basically, you can play with saturation and hue, but the value brightness) should be accurate.

crazy good
crayzeeeee gooood!
i was thinking about your stuff and why it's so appealing to me, and i realized that your very strongest point is your sense of design. i see it most obviously in the way you layout the pages in your sketches... that's just amazing. i always just randomly cram unrelated things in my sketch books... all disjointed little images like they live in a great apartment complex. But your stuff is so unified and together. even if they're two completely unrelated drawings, they still fit in some design on your page. your excellent sense of design carries on into your other drawings as well. the shapes you use and how you use them... very very well done. i think that's why i like your stuff man, so keep up the good work and continue to rock. oh, btw, about figure drawing class... have you checked out potential sources outside of your high school? you might find in your community some artists that get together and draw from a model, or maybe at a nearby university? perhaps some workshops near you? and if there are none, maybe you should start it up, get some local artists on the phone and see if they want to get together and chip in for a model. cause that's all you need: a model. sure you could use instruction... but what better instruction than direct observation?
yah, so mounds and mounds of praise and encouragement!

Lung_bug
June 22nd, 2003, 05:02 PM

wow man! isolation is SUXOR! sorry to hear that! i understand though, i've lived for a long time in the desert and mountainy regions of the US in itty bitty towns. the only thing resembling an artist in most of those towns was the guy that airbrushed unicorns on Vans and the ad layout guy for the local newspaper... chorttle chorttle

keep up the good fight though, you're doing great on your own!

During these pass three days I haven't been able to draw a single decent thing. I’ve come to a point where I’m fighting over perspective, figures, and all that stuff, so hard that just have to leave the table. I got frustrated and started thinking if my work is really any good (I wonder if it happens to you).

But then I come here and check your stuff, and I remember why I push myself so hard.
I found myself smiling saying “that is fu@#$ awesome”. And then I’m ok again.
I look at my work and see that is not that bad is just that I want more out of it.

Thanks for sharing your work, thanks for the inspiration.

ac_osorio: yeah it happens to me (you wouldn't believe how often and the heat here isn't helping either) but i have a way of dealing with it. break the routine, do something completely different. read a book or something. as i said, my favorite part of doing this is inspiring people and making them draw

15 minutes? damn, you've got to breathe with your pencil...
i like the face of that girl a lot - these other faces are technically top, but somehow they don't get me as much as that first face. hmm. i guess it's those negative shapes that enchant me every time...

hmm. i liked in flames' instrumentals a lot, but somehow never got used to the singer. "whoracle" is a great song, though ;D

Lung strikes again. good stuff again guy. givin ya a lil public praise as i put it in the channel.anyways back to ya stuff. i like how its been progressing. it looks to me like you have gotten more confidence in ur lines from ur first post with the females. lol that toilet is bloody awesome =]. like i said i'd like to see some more mechanical things from u. that pic with the bull head was really nice. and from one of ur latest updates with the 4-5 pictures with the mechanical head its really nice, have u seen Space Truckers, reminded me of that a whole lot, cept it was more organic in ze movie. i would like to see how you have been progressin with cars and such. maybe an idea to go on is boats. i been workin on alot of those lately. should be really good practice with perspective and tone. like the old classical type boats the spanish used to make. keep up the good work bug. =]

aidan: 12 hours is a good start i think. puddnhead works (or worked dunno atm) approx 15 hours a day. and look where it got him. you can think of it like a gym workout. gotta do it every day. if you work out 10 hours one day and then don't for a few weeks, it's no use. gotta keep pushin it every day. the more you do it, the better you get. sounds easy, eh? :)
i have a site up at the moment (it's temporary but is something)

those hands are great - i like especially that second one.

by the way, i recently browsed through the beginning pages of this thread again, and noticed the many pages with notes. now... do these help you? i mean, can you remember how to draw things better when writing notes while drawing? or are you just noting them down for others to better understand? (thanks by the way, they're helpful ;) ). just being curious...

endregan
August 26th, 2003, 06:31 PM

Damn, I want to draw as much as you do but there's so much else to do...

I think you're underrating this.
Not everybody has the passion to draw as much as you do.
The point, when you just can't go on is differently set set from person to person.

And I guess people who just don't has the passion to draw much, shouldn't wonder why they ain't getting better as much as other people are.

Lung_bug
August 28th, 2003, 05:38 PM
metaphysiks: the robot design was a rough sketch for my friend who's into 3d modelling. he just needed the basic idea so i didn't go for details as much as i could. i'll get at it in one of the next updates

golgari: the thing with notes is that i do both, help myself and, hopefully, people who see them (glad you find them helpful). to write them, i am forced to think it all through, comipile and put in short lines. it's not as much about writing them as much as the thought process. a lot of it sticks in the brain. and that's important, right? try it once, you'll see it works

endregan: i'm not really a drinking person, but sometimes gotta get out of the house and spend some time with the lads. and you're right about the last part tho. no time to waste!

xia: thanks :)

aidan: it's always hard forcing oneself to work. the start is rough but it gets easier afterwards. i didn't set myself an aim to draw 10 hours straight from the start. two years ago, when i started doing this more seriously, i said myself "hey, let's see if i can pull off five pages every day". and so i bought a small a5 notepad and started kicking at it. it worked! after a while you want to do more and honestly, i just became addicted. i feel utterly useless when i don't draw. imho everyone should ask themselves WHY are they doing it and HOW hard do they want it.

Hey Lung_bug, I haven't been here for a long time and obviously missed some great art. You  rock!

As many other people I'm really impressed by your lomg drawing sessions. I wonder who organises your life then? who earns the money, cooks the meals, does the washing and ironing and so on? I mean, I'm a marketing-consulter and work currently 9-10 hours a day. Then, after organising my life, I usually draw for about 1-2 hours per day. I'm also a great fan of literature and film and this has to fit in, too. Plus social life, i.e. family and friends. Plus sleeping (I don't sleep more than 6-7 hours a night, this isn't that much) - SO HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO DRAW THOSE WONDERFUL PICS UP TO 12 HOURS A DAY??? Sorry for shouting ...

Ok, to stop ranting - great stuff!

To Jester:
I agree with Lung. He is on his way to be great. I think I understand where he's going with this. It all comes down to you.
YOU have to make a "DECISION". It is as simple as this. What is more important to you? "Do you want to be "GREAT", or you just want to be good." Once you decide, the rest is history. It's your choice, nothing is for free. Sacrefice has to be made for the cost of being "GREATER".

jester: hey, thanks for stopping by and for the nice words. and about my life... i'm not sure if you know i'm 17, so i still live with my parents. last year of highschool now. that takes care of the formalities like cooking and stuff.also i don't have much of a social life, but it was a sacrifice that had to be made. sleeping too sometimes, especially during school. past semester i slept 3-4 hours max daily for many months, and then just blacked out during weekends. holidays rule for drawing and i'm trying to use them the best i can :) when school starts the sessions will cut to some 8-9 hours max, tho. drawing 1-2 hours per day is a fair amount of drawing time, but if i were you i'd try to push it a bit further. mullins once said "MAKE TIME". but then again i'm still a kid

metalwinds: yeah when school starts there'll definitelly be more postable materials :) so i'll aim for a very narrow posting rythm. glad you like the colors, they were an experiment. cheers

ROFL @ "real ninja's always practice". that ninja stuff is really funny. but that first page is great, too. (heck, all your stuff is great. don't ever call it junk again, makes me want to rip my heart out). normally i don't like smudging very much, but in your pictures it somehow looks very good. i guess it's because your still maintaining enough stroky quality, plus you have pretty clean outlines. nice background composition...

hey Lung, i love your stuff. very inspirational since im 15 and i just started being serious about drawing this summer. the ninja one was hilarious :P just curious though, do you have doodles you do when your bored? cause the ones you do seem so neat and organized. also just wondering what do you draw during those hours? ive been drawing but i ll stop every 5 seconds or something. ive been studying bones and muscles and im going to move onto portraits in a bit. lastly your the one that inspired and pushed me to work harder. i draw probably 2-3 hours a day but not straight.

golgari: yeh i'm not a fan of smudgin myself but gotta experiment. i need to get one of those paper stumps, some people kick ass with em
ladylioness: the ninja ones are doodles. i have a tendention to subconsciously arrange things. weirdish. there's -ALWAYS- something to draw. sometimes i take one of those clothing catalogues and draw few dozen of them. on the other occasion mags like national geographic. or just draw my room or me or stuff from mind like robots, etc. a lot of time goes on anatomy too. you'll see, the further you go, the more you want to do it :)

I could not keep myself away from the "reply to post" button and well.. here i am, writing sort of a comment. I can't add anything to what has been said before, in all the replys you've allready gotten. You're _really_ good. Love your work and especially the sketchpages where you combine sweet drawings, great ideas and lots of fun.
fun really never seems to be missing when you draw and that is IMO a great thing.

Take care and _best_ wishes!

Hiya LB... been following this thread since the beginning (like most members here @ CA probably). Your work is really inspiring, especially to a pencil slinger like me. You have great focus for your age. Keep it!! Your ability speaks for itself... and I can't wait to see more. Looking forward to watching your progress as you grow.

Small Request: the next time you do an Open Canvas session, would you please save off a .wpe file for us to all spooge over? You explained your process very well a few pages back, but it would be most cool to see it in action.

And... the expression on this guy made me laugh out loud! Too cool!

Lung-

What constantly amazes me about this sketchbook is not the strength of your technical talent in light of your age, although it does floor me again and again on its own merits; 17 or 77 the long hours and hard work are sort of a universal trial I think (although time and difficulty vary for numerous reasons, obviously).

What I find absolutely the most awing when I look at your artwork is that the emotions and feelings of the pieces are utterly mature in their complexity. It is your grip of those expressions and the ability to convey them eloquently that I most admire, and I wanted to say so.

Thank you for inspiring so many of us to work harder. :)

Lung_bug - Two quick questions...

1) This was asked earlier in this thread, but how do you do your sketchbook covers? Do you do them digitally, print and paste 'em on the cover? Or do you just draw on the inside cover or first page?

2) Where do you get your female references from? Are they poses in magazines, in your head, or on the net? Any favorite ref sites? Just curious...

And keep updating regularly, I love your style. Great poses and rendering!
