Such inspiration Lung..... I have been reviewing your thread for the past 3 days. Since then, I have upped my drawing time from 3-4 hours a day, to 6-7. Not nearly as much as most, but I am much happier now. After studying many of your drawings, I have a better idea of value, which has been a huge road block for me. Many thanks for this thread. Please, never stop, you have an undeniable talent that will touch many more.

I am now one of the rest that is in need of your posts. <3

Looking forward to more.

Lung, you familiar with the island of Vis? I guess half of my family (my grandpa's generation) is from there, and I have an uncle who spends 6 months of the year there with the other distant half of our family...

anyway, great drawings. I'm glad you're updating more regularly...I watch, but seldom say anything. Keep it up, Another silent admirerererer.... :confident

Lungs work is incredible... FACT! BUT, why is so many people here on ca pressurising him into posting artwork so often? Give the guy a break, I mean hes probably got a lot of things on his mind, out-with art related stuff and trying to meet demands of folk on here demanding instant inspiration. Art is a personal thing after all, its not something a person can just rush out quickly, especially if u got lots of things buzzin in your head.

Basically, I just wanted to say take as long as u want Lung :D

Dude Lung is probbly out saving to world with his bone crushing art skills. In the day he might be known as Tonci, but at night he is known as Lung Bug! and watch out evil-doers, cuz he will bust out some pencils and stick it to where the sun dont shine haha. any way lung, would you know of any good comics that have good art, and story. i was thinking of buying watchmen, batman: the dark knight returns (frank miller), or Kingdome Come (art by Alex Ross). which one is a good choice?

Lung_bug
August 24th, 2004, 04:32 PM
you guys brought a smile on my face...

jetpack42: yeah, vis is some 300-ish km from here, never been there, but i hear it's a nice place. did you know we have 1085 islands?

obid619: gouache. water. put the two together :)

elihanselman: thanks

maxetormer: traditional may be harder but it's much more fun...

denart: you're welcome :)

brkofdon: you could easily bound these sketches together to make a book! (which im sure you'll end up doing)
- making one, it's called "ink soup". you'll hear more about it when (and if) it's finished. 50-ish pages planned, ink stuff mostly, hence the title.

obid619: yeah, it's mine. old and crappy. shocking to see that i still make the same mistakes

arghmisfit: tight in all the wrong places

eew: don't worry about me, i draw. not as much as i should, but with more attention at least. and yes, occupied with other things that require time. got exams in two weeks so i'll have to give more time to chemistry and math. art is slightly affected by it but bleh. ramblin...

burning eyes: glad you started drawing again, but i'm sure there's other sources of inspiration too... a lot of fine threads floating around these days

red_rook: you do that :)

eew: i was actually watching it sink. wondered if anyone would bump it, heh

cocofuppa: thanks for defending me buddy, tho it's not that i feel that much pressured, but rather don't have much interesting stuff to share atm. most of the stuff i do is random stuff from life... not as interesting as robots... or boobs

jokisalo: another convert! yay! i'll check out your thread right away

maxetormer: :)

angela: i'll update soon. promise

obid619: damn, i have been unmasked! oh well. comics with good art and story are hm, kinda rare imho. there's always something that people don't like. frank miller kicks mad ass storywise, but people usually don't like his style of drawing. sin city is a nice series with a gritty, noir story and very graphic art (fantastic bit with rain); stylized and it's one of those love/hate things. i recommend looking it up online to check out a few pages. dark knight returns is a fantastic bit of read but again, the art isn't all that spectacular. it's not bad either, but same thing with sin city. watchmen is very old school, gibbons totally nails it down and moore does insane stuff on the script level. a legendary comic, and even though art doesn't look kickass on the first glance, it's the only style that fits the story. kingdom come is great if you like alex ross. for me it was "wow" for the first 20 seconds. gets kinda boring after a while... sure he's great and everything but sometimes lacks, dunno, expression. *shrug* out of the bunch, i'd recommend dark knight. all of them are good, and watchmen and DK are a must read. kingdom come is ok, but not as important as the other two.

my personal faves would be 100 bullets, where you have azzarello and risso, both kickass- risso is one of my dearest comic book artists, somewhere inbetween mignola and miller. pick up an issue and check it out. very addictive. also by these two guys, batman: broken city.

hellboy...

a french comic by le tendre and loisel - La quęte de l'oiseau du temps

moebius' l'incal noir (black incal)... don't mix this one up with Incal. that one's drawn by janjetov (cool guy, but he's not moebius)

enki bilal's the nikopol trilogy - strange and also either you love it or hate it. i liked it a lot, had a weird vibe

reading the losers atm, similar to 100 bullets. the covers themselves kick ass... anyone familiar with them? also vertigo pop:bangkok covers are verrr nice. i'll try and get em online

man can i ramble, eh? :)

wow lung, i never guessed i'd get that long a response. i guess it just shows you know your comics. Actually i've been thinking about 100 bullets as well. i heard some stuff about the story, and it was kinda intriguing. perhaps i'll buy some frank miller's books and kingdom come (if there is hardcover available). i'm actually thinking of maybe collecting comics as they are a kind of literature, only with pic's. anyway thanks man! and i'll continue drawing !

I'm going to agree with Marko. You have a firm hold on how you like to draw and what interests you for subject matter. Also, you are constantly pushing your limits and broadening your horizons; something people have a terrible time with all too often. If you go to a large art-school they will, for the most part, try to break you, especially if you are just doing a drawing or painting focus and not something applied like illustration (which is still fraught with vagaries). Art is such a broad thing in this crazy modern world of ours, pretentious artist are in overabundance. For the most part, they are convinced that such things as nothing resembling anything is something and that everything else is "juvenile" - especially the dreaded "comics".

Art-school is also half class and half surrounding. You go to be surrounded by artists and work in an environment conducive to creation (or so the idea goes). getting started is the hardest part and you have such a great handle already. You'll have no trouble being surrounded by other artists, especially if you get out to one of these workshops. I guess my point is you have the option of not going to school. You are so productive and brilliant already, there is not telling what that will lead to. But if your worried about resources or contacts or what not - do it through CA.

Anyways this latest stuff is killer, now I have to go draw.
thanks Lung.

agree ..i so agree ..... i'm going to different school from september .. art school .. i chose for fina art class in that realy small building are 500 students ! and the coolest thing that fine art has a limit of 14 students ! so i think it would pretty cool for me as a beginner to hang out with all those artists ...yeh and it be for me 50% environement for sure !
Lung ... what were you saying about studiing math en whatsoever ....? you are going to an art school or university .. right ????

One question, I'm not sure if it's been asked before but I'm lazy. What type of pen did you use for those environment sketches so I can go out and get them? Your anatomy and life work is looking so good man... It's really amazing. I'm not sure how the college thing is going but it looks like you can do as good as any teacher. hey lung. me again. i ordered dark knight and 100 bullets book 2 (cuz i got book 1 already, and it was a pretty good book.) I just wanted to critique you (yes, CRITIQUE). I'd say the area that you need major attention on would definitly have to be in the area of inking. Although i see improvements, I know that you can do better. simply, your skill in inking does not match your other skills. i aint dissing you or anything (that'd be the last thing i'd want to do to an awesome artist like you), but just saying improve. Try looking at other comic books and learn inkin techniques. I bet your doing that already though. Also remember that time you were thinking of making a book. If you do decide to do that in the future, you should definetely make a book on how to draw comic books. I'm telling you man, many of your notes along with your art would be a dramatic impact on young artists. I'm imagining like a 200-some odd page book that just basically teaches people about how to draw and stuff like that. maybe it can cover anatomy, some of your techniqeues and stuff. but yea, i'm blabbering. i'll talk some time later. dude, you gotta go on AIM man. :^^:

The Iconoclast
September 8th, 2004, 05:11 PM
obid: the key is, as i said many times before, to have fun. it might seem hard to throw fun into a femur study but it is possible. draw funny stuff around it. draw skeleton sex. whatever. when i do these anatomical studies, i try to set up my pose (not the default one from the book) and then fill in the muscles, using the book. that way it goes through the cognitive centers in the brain, instead of just going through the visual part.

Crap, dude, that's what I'm going to try for the next month or so of drawing (mixed in with some other fun stuff, of course.) I'm in favor of your "randomly organized" sketching style, so I try not to plan things out and chill with whatever gets into my head. You don't have to reply to this, but ANOTHER MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

You are freakin' mad... :jawdrop: :afroboy:

gah, splittin headache, let's make this short. i wrote you all a reply about a week ago and then the board ate it. bleh.

eew: my net connection is acting real wonky so i'll check it out if it allows me... thanks

chaotic logik: sure will, thanks

elastic: heh. can't really agree on the correct part...

snookums: i should really put that sketch on an auction or something :)

cyrus: fiddler on the roof? weird. had no intention of that, but it could be my subconscious. please elaborate, tho, sounds interesting

burning eyes: um... more often updates?

calle_: \m/

obid: collect good comics, ones you can learn from...

angela: wow, the enthusiasm :)

steak-tron: the surrounds part is what i need. i'd write more but gotta be fast

eew: i'm studying graphic design. for now.

kinnas: music to my ears, bud. keep at it.

liam.c: yeah. i won't be as inspiring when i'm 29 or something. we'll see :)

arghmisfit: thanks.

josef k.: it wasn't me!

strang: heh, it's just thumbnails, brainstorming about a cover. never thought of it as a storyboard...

maxetormer: plenty of errors in there, but thanks for the encouragement

dakoscwash: first of all, it's not about the pen. second, it's a pilot g-tec c4. hpx kindly reccomended it a while ago and it became my favorite tool (pencil excluded). glad you like the notes

nor: AYE!

azmanayob: anytime. thanks

nagasch: :)

corky13: i don't have any finished stuff. sucks. need to get at it

willschnevel: yay jock. about that btw... did you sit around and draw for hours?

no skillz: heh... someday. get the sketchbook! draw draw draw!

spok: going to prague? i might come

obid: CRITIQUE?!?!?! WTF?! ... thanks! you get a cookie for actually saying something constructive. yeah, inking needs work, and i'm working at it slowly. when i get around doing some longer comics, i'll probably work on it 200%, but for now i like to just play (like in these pages below). about the book... imho at least 10 years of experience before writing is a must. book on anatomy? i've never been in a life drawing class, dude!

liam.c: see above about the book. teaching i like, here and there, but i always feel ashamed because i wing a lot of stuff...

icey: lets get them updates rolling then, eh? :)

the iconoclast: HUZZAH! lungbat strikes again

ladiviv: here goes :)

corky13: it's much better than before...

here's a few from today, just so i don't post without any art stuffs. both just messing with ink, playing with pilots and the white gel-pen... tried some compositional stuff with the second one. both A5 in size.

Hey lung! those are some great updates dude. Yea man already your inking is getting better i can really tell. OH and the book idea - it really doesnt need to be an anatomy book but rather just a book on how to approach on being a better artist. and its cool that you didn't take figure classes (you can do that in the future), which is what makes you kinda cooler cuz you have non-reference skills - um kinda whatever. :tihi:

i think i'm gonna start critiquing your ass Lung. no one else realy does it so i am MUAHJAHHAHA.
crit - 1st inking pic - i realize you were trying to texterize your pants by drawing many horizontal lines. i'm thinkin you were trying to create a wrinkle effect (you might think different). i'm really not seeing it. if you were lookin at a wrinkle effect why not link up those lines (not a lot but some just so it makes it more wrinkly).

2nd pic - i realize you were going for abnormality on the big guy but the left foot just looks too triangular. try to fix up the spots so the foot looks more like a foot. also on the guy with the lower right (which reminds me of ladytron from wildCATS) the metalic mouth appears a little rough. perhaps it might be because you havent finished it yet? maybe you can creat a texture that resembles metal. I wish i knew but doing mettalic renderings is one of the hardest things for me.

OK! i crit'd you lung. crit me sometimes if you got the time k? we should all attempt to better ourselves through critiquiing. i'm sure that everypost i do from now on shall have crits.

Some critique:

I'm not particularly fond of the way you suggested/rendered the clothing folds in the two last pieces. It's hard to stylize such a thing. I'm pretty sure you know how to do it right, but in these particular instances, I'm not won over. Especially the clothing (folds) of the little guy in image 2 is poor.

I don't understand a hatching choice: the stomach of the 'big guy' in the last image seems to be a different 'material' than , say, his skin. Which I suppose it is. You did good with the image above: the way you handled the texture of the pants. It's unmistakebly a different fabric than the other stuff.

image 2: the big guy -> his shoulders suffer from too much spotted blacks. They seem detached. The hands of the little guy that's commanding the big dude are not very good. Okay, it's stylized. But still, the hands don't do it for me. (placement of thumb, left hand / visibilty of fingers - the digit to our left should be less visible)

Can't really say that weapon design floats my boat - image 1. Seems dysfunctional, the barrels have different perspective points?

Go easier on the white outlines. You outline practically EVERYTHING. The point of white outlines is clarity, and too many of 'em do just the opposite.

Just my random thoughts.

Hi Lung Bug,

I'm pretty new around here, so I'm just now starting to scratch the surface of all the impressive artist's sketchbooks...

I come from a comicbook background, so I am really drawn to your stuff (so to speak!). Nice grasp on anatomy and shadows. That Spawn progressive was great! You have a ton of sweet stuff in here, I'll be keeping my eye on you and your updates.

Keep chugging away! Looking forward to more!

crit - 1st inking pic - i realize you were trying to texterize your pants by drawing many horizontal lines. i'm thinkin you were trying to create a wrinkle effect (you might think different). i'm really not seeing it. if you were lookin at a wrinkle effect why not link up those lines (not a lot but some just so it makes it more wrinkly).

Hey Lung, have you gotten Goad yet?
In Hale's pencil drawings, he does the exact same thing with the little broken lines to depict wrinkles in clothing.

Your balancing of black and white in an image is aesthetically pleasing. And the all the curves in the first image works well together.

hey folks, i'm not dead.
i moved to the big city here (well, big compared to the town i grew up in) and still getting used to it. having sleep problems, and everything's taking too much time. college (graphic arts) is quite gay, and it seems there's no drawing till next year. *shrug* i'll just keep my old method.

here's something different- i took a short thing my girlfriend wrote few months back and illustrated it. i tried to expand the words a bit and give it more different meanings. not sure if i suceeded, but it was a fair try. twas quite rushed, though (to have it finished by our anniversary), about 20 hours over the course of two days; A3 in size, ink. below the story are all the sketches i did for preparation, for those who care about such stuffs. the story's scanned from photocopies so sorry about the white specks (i did clean them up a bit)

very very good design ideas. its always hard to find something to nitpick at since this is all so well thought out before it it finalized. you must keep things coming at a steady pace. seems like you have a pretty good following here, ppl get real antsy when you don't feed them.

good to have some new post form ya, thanks for the

that last sequencial poetry thing is
very nice, it has a very nice flow
and i reads very easily, I migth have gotten
all wrong but i like the idea about that the need
of praise can litelry eat your soul away,
but i the other hand if you dont feed the ego
every once in a while, your end up pretty screwed
up too, life is a funny bag of contradiccions.

(he he yeah I sudied graphic desing and its lots of boring
teory and abstract compostion concepts on the begining
or at least it was on my university, it gets better later on)

glad you peeps liked that. i have some more odd stuff coming sometime soon, and it's encouraging to see such a warm response.

- - -

ilja murometz: you definitely should! ink is the most fun thing ever

shylone_breath: glad you find it inspiring, i'll most certainly keep drawing and, if i can, surprising you guys :)

denart: we didn't learn squat yet. all about mechanics. and physics. and math. and engineering. blah.

dakoscwash: :)

brkofdon: to tell the truth, i tend to overthink things if i have too much time on it, so i tried to keep these quick and spontaneous. not the first thing that pops in my head, but not something i'll lose sleep over for a couple of days. if that makes any sense.

lim: you would? well, i could upload some high resolution scans, and you can print them if you likes. the originals were A3, but i can't scan that big. anyways, i tried to make these 'hangable' :)

obid619: mwahahaha :) guh melting clocks. there weren't much there (i didn't notice any). a lot of stuff i hadn't seen before, even a sketchbook of his (which looked kinda wonky to be honest). the show was quite impressive, though. a nice experience.

bonedog: heh, i'm not sure what it means either. it's rather open so you can build your story around it... ?

sebastianbulow: speed/realization methods. i had some gradients and scribble-textures in mind when i did the thumbs, but it would take ages to do anything in that manner, so i settled for solid blacks (brush + a jar of india ink). and thanks! :D

geki: not as much experience as there could/should be! glad you like it, and glad to meet you too

icey: there's a lot of stuff crammed in that last one... the rib, the head disconnected from the spine. ya know, 'artsy' stuff :)

egets: yeah, "something" nails it

maldrin: man, you're such a nice guy! seriously. that post made me smile, and i like things that make me smile. and i'm still standing strong, no worries. :bounce:

maxetormer: it's a nice way of reading it, quite different from mine, but still very interesting (not 'wrong' in any way). as i said, i tried to add more different meanings. i'm glad to see people making their own interpretations (because that means i succeeded at least to some extent). and about college- we don't do even boring theory yet. all math/physics/engineering this year. thanks for the nice words!

not to be gay and post without art, here's a 'wazzer:

to learn anatomy, just draw it for hours on end. look to simplify. i know muscles and bones good enough, but rarely there's any need for them. depending on what you want to do, it get's easier/harder. there's too much accent on the anatomy anyways.

If I was you, I'd just start apply at studios that you'd be interested in working for. I'm sure many people here would agree that you learn much more in a studio environment than in school. Not to hate on art schools or anything but the best way to learn is from learning from the best there is and "the best there is" don't usually teach at schools... they teach in studios, work in studios. You're definitely talented enough to get your foot in the door and you seem extremely mature for your age. I don't see what a school could really do for you that a good studio couldn't do better. I definitely think that you're ready.

Cheers,
Bobby

Your developement is amazing, you got abstract in the last few posts - that means your really setting your creative potential free!!!

i just wrote a 3000 letter post and the damn board ate it. garrrr.

for the update part- college year drawing to an end, not very happy with it (college, not the year), might transfer to fine arts. i'd rather spend time and nerves doing lithographs than learning chemistry and engineering and whatnot. generally, learning more and drawing less, putting more thought into it. not that i'm trying to make the best drawings in all history... just trying to have less of that 'random guy with a sword' stuff. it's more likely that i'll think 'yeah, i oughtta go draw some draped figures, don't really know how to draw pants properly', and i'll pull out one of those free fashion catalogues (some of which count up to 600 pages- wonderful for studyin not only clothes, but also faces, hands, feet). not that i never sit and doodle, but it doesn't happen as much now that i end up with a page of random heads, or a monster.

most of my learning is from comics nowadays, and it's been wonderful. and no, not mcfarlane-liefeld-etc kind of comics. old school guys, hardworking people, who took the thing much more seriously (because they had to)... to name a few you can google up- alex toth (as the definite numero uno), noel sickles, milt caniff. yeah, old boring stuff. the old masters of comics. i still mignola, timm, guarnido, and others, don't fear. the medium itself is wonderful and makes a terrific learning device. makes you solve hundreds of small problems that you wouldn't encounter as much if you do pinups or an illustration every two months or so. an average comic page has six panels... that's lotta learning. and if you're serious about it (aiming at pro levels serious), you can't have loose parts. you need to know perspective, composition, how to draw people, cats, dogs, furniture, cars, trees, buildings, trains, streets, giant lizard monsters, whatever. and do it all with equal ease. especially if you have a lunatic writer who sets up a story about (for an example) a hungarian peasant losing a squirrel, his life-long companion, in a zoo. or something that takes place on a town square, with 300 people walking around. as you draw people a lot there, you quickly stop fussing about all the anatomy. clavicle of a man in the background is not necessary. most of the anatomy drops off, even in the main characters. usually they're fully clothed and you just draw hands and the head. and besides, if you have 20 pages to do, i doubt it anyone would go constructing every character from a skeleton. so you derive something outta it all, keep it as realistic as possible, keep the proportions, yet make it fast and versatile, easy to use. and it's amazing how much one learns through all that. just a simple thing like having panel borders makes you learn. you can't start by drawing the head of the character, or a hand, because the chances are- it won't fit in the panel. so you gotta know where the character is in space, what's he/she doing. and by doing that you get more of a feel for proportion, space. and it's great. i could rant about this for days, dunno if it makes any sense to you guys. i'll post some stuff maybe, somewhere in the learning forum. for the work part, i still wouldn't say that i make a living out of it, but certainly making more money from it than before. if i went around and actively looked for work, i'd probably be able to keep a steady income doing illustration, covers, storyboards. that'll probably happen, now i'm just picking up what comes along. did some storyboards, crudely, but learned from it. certainly made me draw things i wouldn't draw usually, like a kindergarten, or clowns, or a classy reception. helped out a comic artist friend, sketched in a panel with a lot of horses, also something i don't draw usually. today gotta finish a book cover, first color thing in months... on a personal plan, still with the best gf in the world, the only person that can handle me in my can't-draw-useless-imaretard-autistic-crisis periods... 17 months and counting. kickass. gotta send around those sketches to you guys... put up site too. had it on the hd for a while, maybe it'll go up next week. no deadlines next week, so it might happen. so much for a long rant. few stuffs i had laying around, didn't post em. oldish. figured better post these, than wait for twenty pics to pile up. will post the cover stuff if it turns out remotely decent.

Hey, Lung. I'm really happy to hear that you're all right now and making your dreams come true. You're very right about learning from comics. I've myself experienced it in my brief comic adventure. Artist drawing comics can have no weaknesess. He has to know it all because there's no time for using refs all the time. I also had my share of lunatic writers - the guy I worked with liked to repeat the same pannels with changing gestures on one guy in the background :) But some time after that i started writing my own story and I understood that the story is the most important thing - I appreciated boring panels too. Anyway - glad you're back. Hope that you'll post something from time to time.

Thanks for sharing. Thanks for letting us all see what would it like to be if Lung Bug drew Sin City :P :)

thirdeye: repeating panels are the devil. many people just copy em on the computer. i resort to lightboxing (i.e. window-lightboxing) lately. but such shots are generally very rarely really needed. usually beginners overdo it. if you look at calvin and hobbes, he never does two equal shots. always rotates for some 5 degrees, just to make it interesting :)

Nice, very nice. :x Spent the last day going through this, and woke up at 5a.m the next day to go through the rest. Very inspirational!!! :)

What occured to you last year for the art school thing, my advice. "It's not what happens to us in life that makes us who we are, it's how we react to it."

You're still drawing, which is awesome and inspirational. From my personal experience, some people less skilled than you and intimidated by your age and focus will do their best to interfere in your continued growth, be it subtle or blatant like the admissions folks at the art college. Nonetheless, do your best to focus on your skills and the positive feedback you get off this messageboard. :)

Many skilled and talented people have changed their path due to how they handle rejection, what we do after that (rejection) gets us where we want to be.

Thanks for sharing. :)

purb36: indeed! that arm went through so many revisions that in the end i just said - fuck it. but a valid comment, thanks.

cgmonkey: if i'm ever in sweden, you're buying beer, heh. cheers

ismail: thanks. what happened last year only made me stronger and more focused. and now, after a year on a crappy college, where i didn't learn anything and where lots of nerves were spent on unimportant things, i'm trying to get into one where i'll draw, and worry only over that. no way i'm changing my path, i got it figured out for the next couple of years and it'll be good.

Mayby you already understood what I ment with reflection but anyway.. what I meant with reflection :).. You made the shadows on those white shirts grey. I thought you could have made those shadows a bit on the blue side, as there would be light reflecting from the blue jacket on the white shirt. Not a very big deal since you already declared it's finished.

On a different note.. the girl on the right (lucila?) on that portrait page looks very pretty

Those ink drawings are something to be proud of

Lung, you are one of my greatest inspirations, if not the greatest. For 2 years i followed your sketchs and drawings on CA.org. But i never had the self esteem to start my own sb. But since then ive finally over come those issues and started my own book. I must say, that wen i found out that u were a year younger than me, and doing such good art i had to suck it up and get moving. So, thanks for the inspiration, a lot. no words or lines could put it right.

but. Ill put it this way. you were a key part in my early starting years of becoming an artist. your work planted seeds. hopefully one day they'll get havested. again thankyou soo much.

thanks. well, there's a number of reasons why i stopped posting here, one of the main ones being time. i think it's been nearly two years since the last post?

right now i'm halfway through the three years of art academy here. studying classic animation and new media (video crap). i'm doing this solely because of my parents. otherwise, learning and preparing for doing comics professionally.

OOOOH....
good to know
thx
(timemanagement is a good reason for it's often those that post the most that improve the least (looks at own postcount and faints))
so I don't think people will be mad at you for depriving em of some juicy updates

sry to hear that your parents seemingly are of the "don't cha become a starving artist!"-type.
