Lookin good (as usual). Out of curiosity, do you use any perspective tricks to draw the ships (like Feng) or are you just drawing them out of your head using your own perspective instincts?..either way they look great:chug:

500 posts bring a tear to my eye :chug:

jeff gran: that's the spirit

calle: bitching about materials is flossing a dead horse- if you can't do anything about it, get the best you can out of it. not much use in complaining about it. regular photocopy paper is available everywhere and you can do pencils and inks on it

young paddy1: thanks. yeh the site, need to get back on that. tight on time

rimshot: no, i don't use any perspective tricks (even though i should); i just wing it. if i'm working on something more detailed and finished i'll go anal about it, but these were just thumbs, so it was straight off

cheers

here's a short sequential i did in geography class today. each page is a6 in size originally (4''x6''), hence the ugly linework. and i really wasn't aiming for jawdropping art- just wanted to tell the thing. peeps at school liked it, hope you will too:

hey lung bug - it must suck to still be in high school at 18.. in this part of australia we finish at 17. I'm in uni and I turn 18 in september. :D mmmmm so much better than school.....

p.s. your art is awesome. 'specially that guy in the armour - the recent one...

catterpillar: don't see why it would suck- i'm having quite a good time in high school! university is a whole other topic... glad you liked the stuff

syrogen: #3 of one million :) cheers!

abyss: they said 'the truth is out there' and it was here all along. :)

here's more cheap excuses as art posts- this one i had to do for my biology teacher, so i'm also posting it here. ref was found on google, and it was roughly post-stamp sized and from that the pencil version was done. the coloring came later and it was from my best memory of the ref. i got the proportions all wrong, but i'm kinda happy because this was my first time working with gouache (and it's nice. i love it how red is vibrant).

lung I love it...that's wonderful...

reminds me of so many ironic moments

like when wildfires were burning around the building where they simulate wildfires to learn how to prevent it (somewhere in new mexico)...they were afraid it would burn down before the simulations finished. ...hah!...

lovely line work - both the left hand panels are reallly nicely done. superb and fun!

and here's some.... old stuff. :( i found it while working on making my site functional (on that note- the site finally has some functionality, as i have put up the static and sequential art sections and will be gaining more functionality over the next weeks). anyways, it's an old idea i had for a site, meant to be used as a portfolio site or something (for the effect and stuff). still might use it someday. here's how the process went:

(original sketch on a post-it note)
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/S01.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/S02.jpg
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/S03.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/S04.jpg

http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/S09.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/S10.jpg

nothing spectacular, but at least you now know how i got my avatar :)

will post again soon, been really braindrained by school and finals and college preps and whatnot...

maldrin
May 29th, 2004, 09:33 PM

Lung, Its really great to see how you progressed from a post-it to that final stellar design. It looks really REALLY cool. I havnt been to your site yet, but its where Im headed next. I just went through your entire sketchbook, and I wish at 21 I had your skill, or even remotely close! Solid Gold, all of it! Also, your comics are a great read, in a cynical glass-is-half-empty hilarious kind of way. Me loves!

maldrin: thanks man :)

endregan: well, i'm not all done yet (need to pass some entrance exams) but i'm heading out for a design college... might also get into fine painting the year after. we'll see :)

keepiru: thanks for the kind words... the site doesn't look like those pics there... yet

obid619: everything except for the first step was done in photoshop. maybe you meant to ask if i used a photoshop trick to do the greens in the back? if so, yeh, i used colorize, and did some variation manually afterwards.

arghmisfit: maybe. probably. dunno. i'll probably keep my site as it is for a while, but if i make a folio soon, i'll use it.

brkofdon: yeh it sucks, but hey- the summer's coming! that means a lot of more sketching and stuffs

steak-tron: *fingers crossed* :D

metalwinds: if you're wondering about that, then you probably have too much free time... jk cheers man

the bear: indeed. and i'm updating again tonight :)

killing.people: big font lovin! well i've been busy with learning stupid things to finish high school and now i'm busy with learning kinda interesting things to get into college, just with more time to draw. so, there. :chug:

maldrin: lungbat returns!

summer pudding: variety? yay! thanks. actually the variety is something that lacks horribly here... but i have this summer reserved for studying backgrounds and clothing so :)

troymccoy: it's amazing, isn't it?

feeb: i could say exactly the same things to you =) recent stuff on yer site rocks amazingly :chug:

joshua: sun spots

great update lung. i like the expression on the zombie lookin guy's face. The painting stuff are nice. when you paint, do you use the same paper as the sketches? if so, doesnt paint react wierdly to that kind of paper? also, i know its kinda wierd but, how's life in Croatia....just interested for some odd reason heh. lookin awesome lung, and always a great abundance of inspiration. last question - did you ever take drawing classes? Lung_bug
June 23rd, 2004, 05:42 PM
wow a lot of replies already! thanks a bunch :chug:

for those who asked about college, i already wrote that before, but here's once more- design college, here, capitol city. not the best choice but there's not much choice at all.

also a common question was about the color stuffs- it's all gouache on copy paper and 70g/m2 sketchbook paper... zombie was first done in pencil, then scanned and printed out and painted over (photocopy paper). after gouache, i went over it a bit with a colored pencil

obid619: paper ^ . life in croatia is weird, as we're a postsocialistic country. people are rather poor and economy is pretty much screwed, but there's some nice nature, especially the sea. people are mostly assholes, but there's also very nice people... they mostly emigrate, though. also, not enough art shops!

dakoscwash: pilot g-1, pilot g-tec c4, crow quills, pens... whatever i have around.

i didn't update when i said (two letters- gee ef) but here's somme thingymabobs from today, ... cover for my school's yearbook and how i planned it:

http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/c2004thumbs.gif
(the thumbs, about 2'' in width, maybe a bit less... did i mention i found pilot g-tecs again? those rule!)

http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/c2004.gif
final pic, done on a4, so it will be printed at 100%. should've drawn it bigger, but i wanted the pencil artefacts to be visible. also, done in quite a rush, hence the roughness.

and a scrap from ma sketchbook, starting out with environments, here's one of the first shy attempts... done while preparing for finals, to chill a bit
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/warehouse.gif

i'll be seeing you soon! ;)

edit// i realized that i posted yesterday so YAY... lets see if i can keep it at a daily pace

DAYUMN! I never use that expression and I never draw that much, so thank you for proving that it isn't an impossible feat. Now, I just have to keep this pace up...

My sketches will be scanned in once I restart the comp.

That painting looks awesome. I'd like to see some more detail around the eye, though. It seems to blur a little more in that part. Of course, this could be a speedpaint. :D :chug:

Lung, YOU ARE AWESOME. i'm a huge fan of all your work and also, as many have told you before, you're a huge inspiration.

And about the Euro. Today's game was ridiculous. I'm a big Portugal fan (being 100% portuguese) and i really didn't have faith in them today, but they sure showed me!! Woot! 6-5 in PKs.. amazing.

Okay, Lung, here's the deal.

You suck.

Now accept it. Move on. Your life will be simpler. Forget art college. Go get a meaningful career in, um, accounting. You'll make a difference, I'm sure.

So, when's the next update? :D

the forum's back... :clapping2

endregan: yeh, it's him, but when i looked at that pic in the morning i was horrified. need to get around and fix it

the iconoclast: 5 pages is a good start! :chug: and nope couldn't go to the workshop because i had finals... i'll be on the next US one for sure, maybe even the europe one if i get some moneys by then

calle_: thanks... i mean aye, i'll be on the poop deck, drawin me scurvy hide off

brkofdon: yeh, isn't it weird? glad you like it :)

nor: you're right. and i fix0red it. thanks (be nitpicky all the time, please)

amadorl: :dead: heh

legnakrad: thank you kind sir :D

winjer: yep, about half the time. the trick is to apply stuff you learned while life drawing to it (like light&shadow, proportions and such). maybe it's hard to explain, but have this example- by drawing still life (fruit) you can get better at drawing robots (and everything else)! have i gone completely insane? no. while drawing still life you practice:
1) composition- arranging shapes in an aesthetically pleasant way (robots are all about that, for the most part)
2) thinking in basic shapes - essential. fruit is good because you get used to thinking in terms of spheres, cylinders, cubes...
3) proportion
4) lighting
5) pencil control (or whatever tools you use)
the key is being creative in all kinds of ways... mignola used a parking meter in front of his building to create mechanical things in one of his hellboy comics (wake the devil, i think). if you think this way, you don't learn just one thing from studies, but dozens. hope this made sense

oregano: naw, i'm too deep in by now... tho accounting sounds fun. numbers. mmm.

maldrin: anytime :) cheers

obid619: du hast ein PM, senor

allright lung, you dont want sugar. Then here I go!

The composition in the second one is working pretty well, the only thing that I dont like is that all the faces(pretty much all of them) look the same, or they all look like brothers. I think the sketch would be better if there was a diversity of different people. Maybe a little more detail wouldnt hurt.

-the vien/ wrinkle on the head from the eye to the ear doesn't correctly ride the form of the head
+the vien is very 2d in comparison to the cheek form
+ the solid line of the vien splits the head into two
+update more=)

headstart.jpg
-like I.was.ink said stear further away from the generic construction model for your imaginary heads i found a great source to study head deviations can be found in a yearbook i drew about 15 heads out of my yearbook yesterday , you probally know this better than i but make sure to construct the heads instead of just drawing them
i would, and am, studing gaboart's (sp?) studies to understand how to apply a deconstructionists mind set to studying photos
-it may just be me or my infamiliarity with the center character but it seems as if the back of his head may be a bit truncated
- the line wait of the eye and the contrasty angles in comparison to the heads surrounding it is too much it draws too much attention to it but the image is saved thanks to the darksest area near the top
- the crazy doctor image withe gear eyes seems out of place like it was pasted in the picture i think you acheived the hpx look except in the case of this doctor becuase he is not entirely intergrated well and in the case of the line guy at the bottom with a star directly above his head. the thing i find slightly irratating about this character is the line work really and his ear may be too close to his eyes. one more thing not that this is a problem in any way but if you were to truly emulate hpx i think the geometry would be far more scewed and distorted- but thats more a question of aesthetics

over all you have a great sense of form and line conservation
i hope get something of use from my critique and(plug plug) if you ever feel like stopping over at my daily sketchbook and droppin a crit or two that would not be a bad thing :btu:

I've delurked to second the request of a more detailed explanation of how you make your sketchbooks, as I can't seem to picture the process in my noggin. Maybe next time you could post pics of your process, as I'd rather make my own rather than keep buying spiral-bound ones.

Anyone tried Kinko's or CopyMax to see if they do this type of binding?

Anyway, great sketches as usual Lung, good luck with the testing and your college application. I've no doubt you'll get in, as any school would love to have a talent like you. Will you send me your pencil shavings for inspiration??

according to the results of the classification exams, i failed to meet the minimum required on the drawing part. i got 180 points out of 500, whereas 200 was needed. it's interesting to note that people who can't draw a square in perspective got in. one girl said "we need to rotate things in perspective- who can't think about some horizon or shit". she's 6th, i think. during the art history part of the exam cell phones rang and sms's were sent back and forth. custom pencils, rulers, glues, scalpels were also brought in and used. one of the tasks was to make an insect out of hammer paper (thick paper, 300g/m2 i think) and we got scotch tape and stick glue. you can't glue a photo onto a paper with that. after working my ass off on it, i got shat on, because it was too 'illustrative' and 'i wasn't supposed to make an actual insect with texture on the wings and legs and whatnot, but an abstract representation'. of course, this wasn't stated anywhere, previously. my compositions were discarded as 'clueless', and that i take quite personally. my dynamic composition was apparently too chaotic (what, was it so dynamic that it did a full circle and went back to static?). after complaining, i got nowhere. two days of bureocracy and a sore neck. so tired. why am i trying so hard to get in such a college anyway? here's something more to illustrate- some of the teachers from that college hold private classes for preparation for the exams. they tell you what you should do and what you shouldn't; they tell you the criteria that they have when grading ; some even tell exactly what you'll be doing on the exam. people go on such preparations for months. and it's 200$ monthly. at least 25 of the first 30 on the rank list were in such classes. so much for fair play.

fine arts academy is an option, but i need to wait a full year to just give it a shot, and the results will probably be similar, because the same system governs there- pay and you're in. or lose a year. right now i'm tired and angry enough to just want to go home and learn on my own. no bullshit, no papers, no corruption, no ambitious parents. people i need are all here though, they all got in their colleges, i'm a black sheep. it'll probably end up with me going to any college this year, just to stay here, in the big city, preparing for next year. and i'll kick their teeth out then.

this might be the end of chazzwazzers, at least for a while. only partially because of the exam results. need time for myself, to learn and work. i bought some oil paints, going to learn that. need time to meditate and grow. i have a number of projects rolling atm, some of which will be on my site soon. it's been a neglected thing past few months, but summer's here.

so tired here, in this city. a week and i'm totally wrecked. had very little time to draw for myself. very little time for anything. hours are wasted just on public transit, trams; days wasted and then drawing and one am and getting up at 7 to go to see if there's any good news... it's a pitiful existence and need to get away from it. seems, though, that i'll be staying for another week. just the thought makes me feel dilapidated. everything skewed. time to start building walls.

for all you who asked about the sketchbook, i already wrote about that, but you just need two unlined notebooks, use their covers or take some cardboard and glue it all together. gase works good for the spine. be inventive, it's not so hard at all. just use your heads for a bit.

the good war and i.was.ink, thank you for the crits. you both get a cookie.

badmange- adress?

cheers then and keep drawing. DRAW DRAW DRAW.
i'm still here, but in the shadows.

I'm soooooooo sorry you had that horrible experience, dude! I just finished my degree at a school that will accept anyone with $$, no portfolio review or anything until the end. And even then they'll let you graduate. I studied 3d and with what I paid compared to what I was taught, I learned more from sites like this and CGTalk. Maybe you should just go to uni to stay in the big city, expose yourself to as much art as possible and keep in close contact with ppl who are studying what you're interested in, in other parts of the world (like ppl on this board that are studying concept art). Good luck, just hang in there.

Lung_bug,

In regards to your rejection from the university:

um, dude, you don't fucking need it!! The losers at the college are there because they couldn't make a living doing art.

I'm twice your age, and I have less than half of your ability, yet I still make a pretty good living at the art racket.

If you waste your talent because of your first taste of rejection, it would be a real shame. So, stop feeling sorry for yourself, get off your ass, and go do what you are good at!! Your portfolio will open many more doors to you than a sheepskin ever will.

You not getting into an art academy is a travesty. Geez.
That's total bollocks.

Very sorry to hear that, Lung . I wish you well.

S.C. Watson

Lung, I know anything I say is going to sound hollow and meaningless right now, but I wanted to post anyway.

I am so very sorry you didn't get in. To me, and I think from the posts that are here, that's unbelievable. You are an incredible artist and I've often thought to myself where I would be if I had a tenth of your talent when I was your age (I'm 33, for what it's worth).

I've never had the art eductation, much less college eductation that I should have because of a combined issue of lacking finances and life's events. But I've always just sort of plowed along, teaching myself and trying to build up skills to the best of my ability.

I tried for several years to get various incarnations of a comic syndicated in the newspaper, and got very close several times. I was even on a first name baisis with more than one of the editors. But everytime I was shot down at the last minute without a real reason with usually less than an "I'm sorry". Left standing there with months, and sometimes years, of pages and pages of material laying around my office trying to figure out what the hell I was going to do now was not a feeling that I really want anyone to experience. All I had to show for my efforts was just a bunch of work that didn't go anywhere. Didn't deliver the end result that I was told time and time again they would deliver.

Your skills, your openess, and your willingness to share and move on are all admired.

Take your time. Do what you need to do to get through. We all understand and we're all pulling for you.

Hang in there man. Keep at it. The correct path will open.

Cheers,
~Oregano

I can't help think that things will work out for the better. There are probably so many other places you could end up going to school that would be better for you. Failing is hard, but would you even want to go to a school that doesn't seem to even understand basic instruction? It seems like they can't even explain a basic entry exam, how would they teach a mighty artist like you to become powerful...more powerful then i can ever imagine.

i didnt read if somebody mentioned it, but you were talked about several times at the Austin workshop that I overheard. Lots of people would say "have you seen that guy...Lung Bug's sketchbook? He's only 18! He's so good!! damn!!" and everyone would chip in about how they liked your stuff. I'm not just talking about shmucks like me either, coro was talking about how awesome you were to a group of people.

So don't dissapear for too long. Your art is mighty. When they strike you down, two more will take your place...

don't become obsessed with the school you will fail to recognize it's short comings. You one of the three most talented artists i have seen around your age and you've inspired many artists here to work harder, many of whom were already obsessed in the first place.you've opened many doors for alot of people but you might want to become more critical of the school you want to attend because do you think they will be geared toward opening the doors you want to travel through? i don't know the quality of work coming out of this school but it seems like the type of instruction (abstact art) being given at this school doesn't seem like it would all that helpful i think you should look to the art renewal center. they have a list of atelier's around the world they approve of , the best thing is that all the teachers they approve are extremly skilled and atelier's usually have small classes, focus on traditional skills sometimes concept design and are very cheap!

I think oregano said pretty much everything I wanted to, so I'll just say that I think you're one of the best artists I've seen on the forum (and any other I've been to) I seriously thought you were a pro till someone said you were 16. Although I know it probably doesn't mean much to you just now, but if the college sees things that way then maybe you're better off not going. Failing someone at the drawing section of the exam with as much talent as yours makes me wonder just how qualified they really are

Anyway, whatever happens I hope you'll continue to inspire us with your work. Good luck with whatever you decide

Lung lung lung, I have a few things to say, Art colleges do NOT neccesserily make you a better artist/sculptor/illustrator or whatever. You are an absolutley AMAZING illustrator lung, and should be damn bloody proud of what you talent and passion you have for your art.

When I applied to my local art college, I didn't get in, and couldnt understand it. I had always had top marks in all my art related stuff before, and was baffled. Then I saw the degree show this summer, and OH BOY, what a load of utter crap it was, so bad that I quite frankly laughed at it, and realized wtf, im better than this pretencious rubbish, im gonna start a business!

So my point lung, is that you are probably too good for the college, you are not as raw as other potential students, and you are probably ready to be employed NOW with the skills you have!

Dont stop drawing, your work is very inspiring, I mean just look at how popular your thread IS? Threads dont get 10's of thousands of viewers for no reason! CHIN UP :D

Peace

well i never thought that u could miss a drawing exam .in my eyes u are a full-educated artist which doesnt need any stupid exams ....

thats a typical example of how school can kill creativity : they tell u exactly what the result should look like. if it looks like that , u are good if it doesnt and u had enough courage for think on your own and bring some ideas u miss because it isnt exactly what the teachers wanted u to do ... the stupid win the creative lose ...

:(

anyway life goes on and :chug:

*sigh* cheer up mate. I'm 20, and I've only just started to draw. I can't go to art school until next year...and that's maybe, if I can develope my ability enough and raise my poor acedemics from my previous life of weary stumbling. : / You're still young so no worries. I love your art.

I can't do much more than reiterate what's been said, but here I go anyway. Sounds to me like the odds are against you w/ the school accepting the kids who took the private lessons. That's pretty unfair, but there's not too much that can be done about that. College degrees (particularly from certain schools) are great, but at the end of the day your work will be more important than whichever school you attended.
I'm just adding my voice to the crowd: sorry about the bs and keep on keep on working. draw draw draw, right?

Hey Lung Bug!

I'm glad to hear your response to all this trouble and b.s. is to keep drawing. You have got your real priorities straight, and you will be one of the masters the rest of us look up to one day soon (like your not already :D).

I just wanted to say over here on the other side of the ocean we have to put up with this stuff to. I need an advanced drawing credit to complete a minor in drawing and painting. At my university you have to pass a portfolio review to get into an advanced class. I brought all my figure drawings which I had made for the lower level university classes (and made excellent marks on) and a few personal artworks and life studies (quite a lot of material) and laid it out on the floor surrounded by all the sophomore and freshman goofy abstract paintings and color collages. Not to say there weren't any deservedly good painters and artists there, but still, about 90% was that other stuff. I got a lot of the other artists coming by and admiring my work.

Suffice to say, I didn't get in. Not a big deal, since they now offer an advanced course for art minors that does not require any review to get in. I know its not as bad as what you seemed to have to put up with, but I thought I'd share it anyway. I think this will foster some great advances in your art... I hope you will share them with us in the future.

Taste of the real world eh? I swear the bureaucracy of art institutions is sickening sometimes even at my school in Las Vegas. This is what you should take from your experience (this is coming from someone who is very dedicated to school and fine arts). First, every artist that comes out of an institution does not become good or famous, which you know. Second, there is a system to everything, and if you learn it, albeit its repulsive nature, you will win. Now as you know there are several artists who never went to school and are truly amazing successes and there are those with their masters that are jokes. If you decide on getting into school this is what you will take (because you have enough talent to not go to school, which is a viable option). You will learn the ability to work with peers, you will earn a piece of paper stating that you stuck to something (important for work), you will broaden your horizon of artistic knowledge which may be daunting or frustrating at first, and you will learn that people suck, especially low-grade people who have been given high-grade positions, and that you are a pawn in their politics, BUT you will learn how to play with them, and I think that is one of the key ingredients to becoming successful in the real world. There is more ego in the art community than any other profession so its best to get used to it now. The entrance exam is a perfect example of ego. I can say that what I've learned in school is 80% how to deal with people and learning how to network and 20% actual education. There are very few professors at my school who can teach me something that a book can't. They are my blessed few that I run to. Other than them, I am dealing with how not to piss off the institution and learning how to prove myself so that I can show my work and have it praised. This is a fine art school, so its not always about the technical ability of the student, but about their fundemental idea they are trying to push through a gallery. Remember that. Fine art school is not illustration school.

Which leads me to my next segway. I am unsure as to what type of school you applied to but it seems to me that if you want to improve your drawing, and do not want to enter the wacky world of galleries, then an illustrator school would be best for you. I for one wish we had one here. All we have is the Art Institute which charges you 5 times the price of the university and gives you 1% of the education, beware of these places. But cheer up mate. Andrew Loomis, one of my all time favorite illustrators/idols was turned away from art school when he first started. But he had that same endearing attitude that you have (which is above all the most important quality you possess, not just in art but in life) and he went off to be one of the most influential illustrators of his time. So when one door closes another opens, its up to you to step through.

My suggestion to you right now is to set a goal. A goal is the best consolation to a difficult time. But the decision, the door, will determine what that goal is. Have you looked at the work that the school you just applied for produces? Including the professors work? If you are impressed, begin studying their way. If not, forget em, no point in wasting your time. Either find a school that impresses you or find a job that impresses you. Set a goal towards either and you will find yourself in a good position sooner than you think. You are young, do not worry about college so much. Establish yourself first. I have faith in your character that you will attend college even if you take some time off. With that, I must say good luck, and keep your chin up. You have a lot to learn and that is the beauty of it all. Keep it in perspective. 10 years from now you will be laughing at how you didn't get into school and where you've gone since then.

Long winded. Good times.

according to the results of the classification exams, i failed to meet the minimum required on the drawing part. i got 180 points out of 500, whereas 200 was needed. it's interesting to note that people who can't draw a square in perspective got in. one girl said "we need to rotate things in perspective- who can't think about some horizon or shit".

Just another reason why I am happy to say I never have nor will I ever go to an art school. And you should be, too.

No one can teach you how to show your soul.

You have the talent. And thats whats needed. Run with it.

man dont let it bother u one bit
the main thing u get out of art school is to be in a comunity of people that are doing the same thing as u but u have that here as well as many profesonals to give direction

i have to say i spent a full day .. for real a full day going over your daily sketch book and it got me so excited i started one aswell

when i was 21 i started drawing and it was total crap i meen it was shit .at that point i went to an art college here and applyed .. got in and thay told me i would get a half scholer ship .. well for waht ever reason i jsut couldnt come up with the other half of the cash so didnt go <... how i was even excepted is byond me cuz i had 0 skill >
some one had told me that every one can get in and get mony for the first year ... then thay dump 90% of the students <at that school any way >

much later about hmm ... maby 7 or 8 years i did have skills .. and was working at a game company <sadly it went out of biznuss after 911 thing, and the game never got made > well one of the fellas i worked with was going to a school for illustration down there and got me intrested
so i went and brought some things and spoke to a counsler
basicly this councler guy took a shit on me and it was pretty much the same deal .. why doint u go to this thing .. costs x and it will probly help ya get in ... at that point is said screw it and did probly the same as u right now

at any rate ... school is defently nice but for this particular gig .. your work speeks for it self .your doing exactly waht you would at school right now . and you have feedback from peers and professonals right here ...
and the work shops ... man to see peoples art comeing out of them .. wow ive seen more progress in thease threads after one of those then many people i know after there first 3 years of art school

i under stand the frustration you probly feel right now .. living as an artest and haveing it as your main love and job is hard for most people to understand ...people treet it as a nice hobby or some such .. never understand the love and effort that goes into makeing a pic some one would probly look at for 1 min at the most <nonartest of corse>... so u figure ahhh! now im gnna try to go to shcool and at last people will appreciate all the work ive done .. and of corse you get mixed up in some bs like that ... so its 10 times more discourgeing

honestly if you wanted to start working right now you could imo ,take your best stuff send it off to all the rpg companys out there and you will be in print in no time <all the while still working on becomeing better >and when thay send you your first book or you see your stuff at the local book store u can give the big FU to those cats at that school with a big smile on your face

please keep posting :) you put me into overdrive with motivation ! i meen it mate !
have a look at my daily sketch book mate the only reason i made it was cuz u got me soo excited after seeing yours ... dont know if i can keep up with 5 per day but im gunna try ! thanks lung for showing all your great stuff !

wow man. :realmad: being a real big fan of your art, i swear that whole fiasco you went through was really bullshit :grumble: i cant believe you didn't get in. All i can say is that all those people there need to be slapped in the face. its like unfairly super duper unfair . like words can't express it. I sometimes see myself buying a book of all your art. I vision that you will be super famous with all your art, and i hope maybe you can sign that book for me if you ever get to the states. THAT will teach those bastards. it'll be like a slap in the face. dude just forget about them. pretend it never happened and just continue what you are doing. your art has an element that i believe is very absent from most drawings. It is that your art entertains. yes, I actually get entertained with your art. Once you make a portfolio just submit, submit, submit. many of the greatest comic book artists have recieve hundreds and hundre]ds of rejection letters before they are propelled to greatness. you, my friend, will be a great (if not already) artist. and, i'd love to say more, maybe on AIM or something, whatever. peace out, and shovel some crud on those judges faces :mumble:

dont worry man! art colleges..well actually all college..tend to be a bit skewed and F'd up! i personally think education should be free. money is such a huge issue. im at my 4th year at the art institute of portland, OR. and will be done in the fall. and i study animation..and only have taken 3 traditional 2d animation classes!!! only 3! in the 4 years ive been here. pretty friggin weak. but this school im going to is more into digital and 3d stuff..so i dunno (im sure there are a million ppl in these forums that can easily tell you there negative stories about art school). dont let those mofos bring you down. i think it might be better to hit up a university maybe..and just get exposed to things like was mentioned..i dunno just keep your head up, its pretty surprising how weird that exams guidlines are..strange...indeed

ya the reality of it all is that everything is a bit f'd up, when i got into art school my expectations were so big, but turned into crap hehe. just remember the GOAL IS GREATER THAN THE STRUGGLE!!!!

go take a rest..have fun! dont stress out too much! and keep that pencil moving....you are still very young!

...but moreover, you have all my best wishes and support. i can tell you now, that i have walked the path...from raw talent, to private arts college, to professional...and RARELY do i ever see someone with such amazing skill, ability and talent.
from my own experiences, i can safely say that an arts college for someone of your ability and drive is somewhat of a redundancy. it appears to me that you have all the ambition and motivation to continue growing as an artist. having a degree is no REAL reflection of that simple truth. if anything it only states that you managed to survive the bulls**t and burn-out, talentless professors who haunt such institutions; and worse yet, that you are thousands of dollars in debt due to loans and other school related costs.
i went to a pretty well know school for traditional animators, and you know what? i never graduated. but as i said before, the diploma or whatever was no reflection of my learning. i ran out of money. i wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth so i had to find work. at first i got a wage job at starbux...slingin' frappacinos, lattes and whatnot for the suburbanite working class...on my off times i just worked on my art...practiced...honed my skill.
eventually i landed a job doing 3d animation for a videogame company...

one thing i can say for sure is that if you seek being a professional artist there are many areas you can look. furthermore, those who are doing the hiring don't usually give a flying f**k at the moon where you went to college...they want to see your skill, they're looking at your work, your portfolio, and your desire to do the best job you can.

sometimes you may be interviewed by an artist or art director, but lemme' tell you right now, any artist who doesn't recognize your latent talents and ability is a charlatan and a burn-out.

keep kickin' a$$, i have no doubt in you. being a pro in no way means that i am the best...and the trade off of being a professional is that most of the time your creative energies are spent at work, leaving you with little to come home with at the end of the night. it's young up-and-comers such as yourself and others on this site that inspire me and drive me to keep growing, drawing, and practicing.

otherwise i'd be a burn-out.

for that i thank and commend you. you are inspirational.
rock on!

hey lung, im going to have to agree with aum. for me, college (i attend a university with a strong art program) has been a very good experience. .. .i have learned much as an artist, but i have also learned much as a person. . .and i know i will learn much more in the 2 years i have left. i hope this whole experience hasnt turned you off of going to school. ..there are many good art schools out there with teachers that you will learn a lot from, you just have to look around for them. when they didnt accept you, all that means is that you werent meant for that school. in fact, it was better that they turned you down because if they didnt, you would have to deal with that shit all the time. .which wouldnt help you grow as an illustrator.

anyway, dont get too discouraged. .. .what illustrator wants to attend a money-grubbing elitest fine art school anyway... :barfing:

:wtf: dam that is bad news man!!!
It really never crossed my mind that
you would not be accepted !!!!!

That is hightily unfare I can assure you that at my university any
I mean any teacher would worship your abilities and you would have
entered with no sweat, I even show up your sketch book to some of
my class mates and friedns to make them see that practice makes perfect.
You are a a example to follow man, I tell ya that i beigan to draw
with more dicipline just afer I saw your images and the art you
have releazed has never stoped to amaze me.

From all my classmates on my poster desing class the one person
that I belive is the best, tried to get on an university on the capital
citiy of my country, and he got rejected; then he camed at
my univesity and and he got in on the first try, and dam I could not
think of a reason, of how in the name of god, he did not got accepted on
that univesity on the capital city, becase he is very, very good, now
that fellow and i are on our last semester on the university, he applied
for two mayor contests of poster design and he won both of them,
so what I am tring to say here is that the important thing is to keep
tring to get into the university, some time it is unexplainable why
some fellows enters and whay some get rejected.
IMO I just do not get the way some teachers grade some of my
work, most of the times personal tastes make the judgmet of
teachers very burry and shady.

Do not worry, you are dam good and I aspire to have
your ability skills and dicipline

:D you will get to study in not time :D

P. S. and those pre-test courses you mentined do make you life easier
becase in those courses they show you allmost all the things that
the teachers want to see you doing, they teach nothing of real value,
but in the full of burocrasi world in which we live that courses migth help
you out to survive eaisier, once you get in the unversity your will find
out that some teachers are good and some bad and that the real learing
comes from your own determination to work, but you already know all this
so you will have no problem on becoming a master painter :D

keep it up :D :D  :chug:

lung... this whole story f your is an utter joke. reminds me of the people i saw when i went to an art school type of thing around here. all noses high, super artsy, but had endless discussions about the simplest perspective things ("no, but i think this here is the frontmost thing... and so it does have not the horizon of this thing back there").

i say, take your year off, grow more and maybe show them what you are made of. dont be too disappointed. these guys obviously have no idea... and are elitist asses. i think someone of your skills shouldnt bother about those people who obviously dont deem perspective knowledge to be important (it prolly inhibits their natural art flow when they know too much) or dont see the value in someone recreating something to the core without reference.
this is the kind of elitist art guy i think so many literature people are: something that is entertaining often isnt too deep. so it is deemed shallow, and for literature to be deep, it must (mandatory!) be a pain to read.

people like you should stand above them and laugh down at their pitiful state of mind, not worry about them.

im with you, mate.

Lung, you have tremendous ability. Just hone it, and wait for a chance to arise. Since Massive Black is hiring, I'd say get YOU, but I also think since you're not older, studying a different subject, which you can make use of later would benefit you more, since you could be closer to your friends.

thanks for the support guys, it means a lot. don't think i'm discouraged, because i'm not. even more set on my path now. just got home about an hour ago and spent a few minutes with my pens and brushes and it felt so much more real than anything in the previous week. anyways, there's no college here that fits my idea, except for fine arts maybe, but seeing their output of academic artists for the past 20 years, it's mostly abstract-self-proclaimed-expressionist bullshit, so no good. i might go to architecture for a year, pick up some tricks there, work freelance on the side. my cunning plan is to get filthy famous and then shit all over these people and drive them into collective suicide. just kidding. maybe.

thanks for the support guys, it means a lot. don't think i'm discouraged, because i'm not. even more set on my path now. just got home about an hour ago and spent a few minutes with my pens and brushes and it felt so much more real than anything in the previous week. anyways, there's no college here that fits my idea, except for fine arts maybe, but seeing their output of academic artists for the past 20 years, it's mostly abstract-self-proclaimed-expressionist bullshit, so no good. i might go to architecture for a year, pick up some tricks there, work freelance on the side. my cunning plan is to get filthy famous and then shit all over these people and drive them into collective suicide. just kidding. maybe.

Hi Tonci,

I remember when we used to go for the occasional OC session a few years back. Your current skill level is very much where I would like to have been if I had put in the amount of dedication and work that you've put into your artistic talents.

Perhaps when I go part-time at work, I'll try and get back into it again, but your work here is always an inspiration for me, not just the style and accuracy, but the designs and concepts that go into them. Still get the same buzz browsing through these sketchbooks, daily or not.

Much beer to you.

Oh, and have this emoticon, I think he's cute: :jump1:

i was just reading somewhere about how these medical people were conducting tests, and one of the tests was to show a group of people some photos of people with gum desiese.
the first group was showed photos that were of mild cases, and that group didnt' really change their brushing habbits.
the second group was showed photos of pretty bad cases, and that group started brushing more, and flossing.
the third group was showed photos of the worst cases, you know, gums peeling, teeth black and breaking off and falling out.....well, that group stopped flossing and brushing altogeather. they gave up.

maybe thats what happened to you lung.
they saw your work, and saw how good it was, and were like, "well shit, i cant teach this kid anything. fuck it. your not admitted to this college."

does that make any sense? or did i just waste my 15 min typing that?

huzzah, the monster is liked! that gives me optimism- it's one of the pieces i'll be sending around to rpg companies. also glad you peeps like the texture. it's one of the things that's been lacking in my stuff and am trying to get at it nowadays.

also, massive amounts of luvin to davi, for crits and bitchin

---

maxetormer: yeh, the neck is long, that was intentional but maybe i pushed it too much. it's just a sketch tho and won't be used as a final one. mouth are off indeed. thanks!

taj: wow. that kinda makes me feel old. :) j/k i'm flattered that you learn from my stuff. i guess i'll have to make my little notes more legible.

metaphysiks: i didn't save that many steps of this thing, but i have a pencil drawing and an early version of the painting, will that do?

It think it was Marko who said Hogarth was, in his opinion, the best source of exaggerated anatomy. Learning it this way helps you know where everything is, then you can reduce...studying your own body in the mirror alot, helps to learn to reduce, unless you're arnold or Mr T.
Bridgeman is pretty good too...

Hey Tonci,

I just read what happened to you when you tried to apply at art school.
Sorry man.
If it cheers you up any, then you should know that back in time when I applied for artschool, I barely got in. I got the worst entry of all. 6,1 points out of 15. You needed at least 6 points to get in. During the following two semesters I desperatly tried to figure out why the hell everyone in my year got a better entry grade even if none of them could draw to save their life. I realized that I was beating down my professors in art skill and education at any time. But they couldn't stand it and they made me do even more silly things. It started hurting their egos. Constantly they tried to spit on my talents and keep me under a thumb. When still life drawing came up as a lesson, I was the only student who wasn't allowed to choose a topic but was reduced to draw a pack of ciggarettes over and over again. After 2 semesters I broke up and went freelance. I had realized that I lost a year to a school that wouldn't be able to teach me anything, that I couldn't learn on my own. This is exactly the same thing you need to know. You can reach everything by yourself as long as you're focused enough. No one will ever ask you for a degree later anyway. Keep doing it your way. Keep pure and keep the spirit. You will make it without art school, whenever you fucking want to.

Cheers
Marko

spacey: thanks dude, glad you can learn from it

obid: you have no idea... i'm just getting started :) heh. well, we'll see what happens

marko: hey, you're alive! that's some nasty experience there, and pretty much the same conclusion like i made few weeks back. needed something (rationalization or whatever the word) to help me so i resorted to 'screw em'. looking back at the past few years, and reading your words makes me more confident about it. :confident:

obid: the key is, as i said many times before, to have fun. it might seem hard to throw fun into a femur study but it is possible. draw funny stuff around it. draw skeleton sex. whatever. when i do these anatomical studies, i try to set up my pose (not the default one from the book) and then fill in the muscles, using the book. that way it goes through the cognitive centers in the brain, instead of just going through the visual part.

xia: "You are actually the guy who inspired me to pick up pencil and draw again at the very first time I saw your thread" - another mission accomplished! ;)

liam.c: thanks! i'll stop by later and check it out

red rook: :painting: :^^:

looking at your thread is highly interesting because i have no clue what your afterall going for. at the beginning you drew monsters and robots, but then you eventually went like a couple of steps back to at first sight simpler things.
but i believe that they key to mastery lays whithin those aka basics that to few ppl really struggle with as longs as it takes but instead only build upon a certain formula that seems to be the most rewarding.
yadda yadda lol

keep it up!

Lung_bug
August 4th, 2004, 09:29 AM
dan.v.d.: well, there shouldn't be a specific direction- it's a sketchbook :) but yeh, i hear what you're saying. the thing is, i did plunge headlong into that stuff but then i realized i needed more work on certain things. i tend to jump from one thing to another often... that works for me. and you're right, the key to mastery is in basics, and i should add, in simplification.

here's one more, big enough to print even, i think
