EDIT
Thanks to Bennet, i will be re-working this from scratch. Please, pay no attention to the image below. unless you really want to. Or you're one of those people who just look at the pictures. Not like me, I buy the magazines for the articles....ok... I'm off to actually be productive now...

Well, we'll see how close to my daughter it ends up looking....

Aside from crits like, "Figure out the lighting!" and "Use the ref!" anything else?

Crap.. I need to fix the whole damn thing cuz it's not even close to the ref and it has no lighting. :S

Much closer than before! Maybe the head is a little too elongated. I'm sure adding in her shirt will help that some,

Thanks Bennett!

I'm going to refine the shape of the head and fix the location of the facial features next....

Hey Glik!
Now, I'm struggling to take this advice myself, so try not to yell, "Foul!", but don't be afraid to really lay in some strong saturated pinks and reds at this point. It's easy to tone them down later, but you've got a bundle of pink cuteness going on here (in the photo), and if the colors come out more muted (or even as muted) as the photo, it might not have the impact you're looking for. Light and saturated peaking through will really liven things up (also keep an eye open for the blues and greens along the side of the noggin).

And I know you're still defining the forms, but keep an eye on your angles and distances. Right now, a drop line from the inner part of her right eye just doesn't seem to be hitting all the same points.

Cool stuff! Looking forward to seeing this one through.

Thanks Dogfood! It's funny you mention the saturation, I was trying Idiot Apathy's color exercises and I keep tripping over saturation...

Here's my next installment... tried fixing some of the more obvious problems... either left or created even more obvious ones...

I think this will be the last update for the day...

Looking forward to viewing it with fresh eyes tomorrow.

great progress here mate. i would note that her mouth seems a little stretched, but that wont really matter as mouths can change shape. noses, on the other hand, dont really differ from reference (really only the angle can change), and as such id suggest a little more attention is payed to her shnoz. in your painting its a tiny bit too far to the left of screen, and as it lacks the appropriate highlights at this point it appears flat - that coupled with the blank whites of her eyes - your beautiful daughter an almost (dare i say it) evil appearance.

*recoils into the foetal position*

oh, and the folds on her clothes are much larger than they need to be.might want to have that looked at too.

those things aside, this is a promising piece indeed :} lookin forward to the next update :D

Thanks `stoph! I had her mouth more exactly the size from the ref, but I wanted to capture her big grin, so I exagerated it a bit.
I agree about the eyes and nose, though. i got a little carried away with details again, but I think I stopped myself.
I have to completely redo the eyes (eye?), though...

A rather subtle update.... still need to fix the eyes (including surrounding area)

From first glance to me, it seems like the eye placement is quite off. The eye to our left seems to be too far to that side of the eye when compared to the photo reference, but reading back you've noticed this?

January 10th, 2006, 03:02 PM
Thanks for the repsonse! I plotted it out, so it shouldn't be too far over. I think the problem is that the eyes are too small....

Oh well... more work tomorrow...

Yep eyes are too small and far apart. Bring them in a tad.
Mouth looks a bit off centre,
nose and mouth angle is pointing slightly in the wrong direction i think.

Painting style looks good though.

good updates so far. might i suggest that, whilst its good youre staying true to the blues and purples that are present in the reference, that you tone them down a little? in the larger shot its becomes more apparent that theyre taking over the piece, giving off the impression of something thats either bruised or undead (ive been playing a lot of world of warcraft). shes got black eyes, my dear chap, you must convince her to let you spot when she pumps those weights! less is more in this case, and a few less values could mean the difference between a nice portrait and an overworked nightmare.. again, no offense intended :)

Bring over the left eye about half an inch and a tiny wee bit bigger! Also the ear on the left side protrudes quite a bit and add a couple inches on the top of the head and your set... Watch the facial structure as well to...

i agree with seth, skull is alittle too round i think. or maybe too wide. but what do i know.

Bad Brownie
January 10th, 2006, 08:36 PM
yea i think the eyes need to be a bit bigger and closer together. (not too close!)
I think the bigger eyes will help the baby look, and help ward off the old bald man look that is always an issue (at least for me) when painting/drawing children.

very sweet. = )

OK! Thank you to everyone!
Scorpion, Seth1 and Bad Brownie, I tried fixing the eyes, but I know I still need to work on them some more. Especially the left one (our right). I tried fixing the nose, but I still need to work on her left nostril (our right). I tried fixing the shape of the head... not sure about that. And I tried fixing the ear.

`stoph, no offense taken, believe me... I tried lightening the values on the eyes, but I still have to work on the heavier blues and purples on the sides of her head.

Here's what I got this morning so far. I would have fixed one of the eyes more, but I accidently opened up the brush tracker and it crashed Painter for me. Bastard thing....>:|

I think you need to reduce the size of shine on the nose a little and deepen the shadow a bit on her right (our left) side. keep at it you're gettin there :)

thank you for the input and encouragement, Jubilee!

looks a lot better, i still think eyes are too small though. Watch the shape of the head too, i.e. the outline. Looks a little slanted to the left.

glikster
January 12th, 2006, 08:32 AM
I agree scorpion, but I'll be honest, I'm scared to make them much bigger... I guess I'll bite the bullet later and just do it.

I've got a meeting and some work today, so I wanted to post this wee little update, just to prove that I haven't given up!

Worked on the eye some more (why, if I'm going to make it larger?) and cleaned up some values and edges (I hope). Also, tried to shape the head better.

Agreed on making the eyes bigger. That's part of what makes a baby a baby!! (Interestingly enough, in most animals this is true, and probably why big-eyed cartoons look cute). Also, look closely at the line of the nose. The horizontal line formed between the two nostrils should line up with the line of the edges of the mouth and the line of the eyes. Right now the nose looks tilted too far to the left (our left). Also keep an eye on the shape of the head--definitely looking like a lopsided skull right now.

glikster
January 12th, 2006, 11:27 AM
bdfoster, thanks! Yeah, I read about the Lil' Endless in the Sandman comics by Jill Thompson... she explained that babies are cute cuz of their big eyes and facial features scrunched on the bottom of their face.

I tried fixing it a little more... worked on the mouth and tried to fix the nose. I think my next update will be brand new eyes.... damn my eyes!!

http://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/138291/bayla_wip_new12.jpg

I think I need help with the facial structure, though. I can't seem to visualize the skull and whether it's lopsided or not. Is it because of the shape of the cranium, is it because of the placement of the features?

You can tell by her looks you must be a N°1 dad.
She's adorable...

This is coming up greatly.

Bumping up the contrast made your drawing too orange/red.

Thank you Uziel and Blades!

I agree, about the contrast. Too much.

I didsn't have a chance all weekend to work on this, and today is a holiday, so not much time today.

Here's where I am... need to refine hair etc...

muchhhh better. now, only thing i see that doesnt really sit well is her eyebrows. the yellow, whilst present in the reference, is too saturated. hehe i just got a mental picture of her with a groucho marx nose, glasses, eyebrows and moustache. dont ask why, its 2am..

lmao :D.. nice glasses XD

as for crits i would define the area where the chin meets the clothing more
and yellow is a bit disturbing (the eyebrows) maybe a little more fleshy tone..

very good work though.. keep it coming

hehe nice moustache! = )

The nose looks particularly good to me, and I love the color pink you used (then again...i pretty much like all pink) but that pink is particularly nice in my opinion. ; ) (let's see, what else can I say to use the word "particularly" in...) lol

Anyway, very nice progress and a great subject. Children are hard for me. Are you calling this done or are you still picking at it?
