Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with preserving pencil line that I have scanned into photoshop. Right now I'm painting over the pencil with a multiply layer, which still effects the line. I heard something about channels?, but I'm not sure what to do with them.

When you scan your pencils in just keep them in their on layer (duplicate them if desired.) Then just make sure they are set to multiply and put them at the top of the layers.

What exactly do you mean by "preserve?"

Preserve as in keeping the original scanned pencil line intact, while the piece is colored in photosop ,as part of the final illustration.

Hi, how can you clean up your pencil lines in photoshp? I use 0.5 mechanical pencil. I scan my pics in 500dpi, but they have eraser markers or other stuff all over. Do I have to manually erase all the marks? Cause I tried using levels but it makes the lines really thick and the details disappear.

try playing around with the levels (Ctrl+L) to make the paper background lighter and the pencil markings darker.

If you are scanning black and white, but want to quickly clean things up, I suggest..dare I say it... the dodge and burn tools. That way you can create a lot of contrast and then use the magic wand or something to quickly erase large portions. Did I make sense? I mean, go to the channels, select either Red, Green, or Blue whichever makes for the most contrast between what you want to keep and erase. Then in that channel use the burn tools to darken pencil lines for instance, then dodge your eraser marks. Then use the magic wand or something to erase all you don't want easily since all the bad stuff is easily identified from all the contrasting you did.

Once you've clean your lineart,
1) go into the ''channels'' tab
2) press ctrl and click on any channel (I prefer the red one) - this activates a selection.
3) go back into the ''layers'' tab and create a new layer
4) invert your selection (shift+ctrl+i)
5) fill with black or any color you want
6) I suggest you lock transparency on this layer. You have now total control on your lineart. You can paint your lineart, put the layer on top or below other layers, change opacity or put any effect on it while filing other layers with your colors and value masses.
Cheers!

I don't understand. If you're painting on an entire 'nother layer, the lines shouldn't be affected whatsoever.
