What size do most people sketch and do finished projects at? People have told me to increase the size I draw at and I did, It made me improve faster I think but it seems less natural to me than just drawing smaller.

I sketch on at least A4, and go to A1 sometimes, especially for color.. Main reason is that it is easier to cover up flaws (be it unintentional) when going smaller, large forces you to deal with them!

If you make a book cover or any illustration that should be on any cover anywhere, I recomend you to do it at a3-a2 or bigger , even if the cover isnt bigger than a6-a4. :P

I sketch on a pocket sized moleskine, I draw in the 9x12-11x14 range pads, I paint illustrations 20x30 typically, and my fine art paintings average about 30x40-40x60

I dunno..I think it's good to be versatile. I always have 2 sketchbooks..one that's pretty small 6"x9" - Working small has it's advantages too. You need to simplify...break things down to basics. My othere sketchbook is 9 1/2" x 11" - which is pretty comfortable and still easy to carry around. When I go life-drawing-if possible I have an 18"x24" pad that is really nice because you can get your entire arm motion into the line. I generally like working large more I suppose.

That's why you should do it. I'm sure riding a bicycle or swimming seem a lot less natural than walking, especially at first, but sometimes they're a much better way to get where you wan to go.

In the past I used to draw small, never filling a full page of a sketchbook (A4). So, I decided to downscale to an A5 pad. A bad idea. You can't (or at least its harder to) draw with the same quality on a smaller scale. It makes drawing a lot more difficult. When I returned to A4 and I could draw a whole lot easier and improved so much quicker. As you said, its a lot quicker too.
