Great, now i can finally put that oversized centuries-spanning fashion history book from Taschen i got to some use. Time to do some big ass skirts and huge featheryop hats. Just one question: does her husband get to be in the picture too. Or would that be overkill?
masque
January 8th, 2006, 03:33 PM
does her husband get to be in the picture too. i plan on weaving him in, as to me he represents a prime motive for the mood of the image i'm cogitating. probably won't be treated with the same degree of attention as Lady Isabelle, though, so as not to diffuse the focus.

January 8th, 2006, 03:40 PM
re: masque: Pretty much what i was thinking too. Without the angle of the undead betrothed you'd only have a chick in a silly skirt. I'm thinking the surroundings would have to be paid attention to as well, what with the mentioning of exotic locales and all that. It's going to be though not to start putting in too much though.

It's an undead necromancer/wizard. Kind of the result of what happens when you mess with the wrong kind of arcane magics for too long.

Final:
"Lady Isabelle Fredrickson sits amid the chaos around her, penning the last entry into her travel diary before she and her languishing husband depart for England. As she collects her thoughts, one indian labourer splits from the steady stream of moving crates and boxes to display for her the most recent expedition's prize, the bound skull of a dark Hindu priest, over three hundred years old and a most difficult creature to kill. With the eye sockets covered, the skull will safely travel with the lady and lord, to find its place among the many victories in their sprawling manor."

Hey guys,
Greetings form Dillon Beach, California!
Regarding the Lich, the first reference I can recall of it was from Tolkiens' lord of the Rings: the head Wring Wraith was a Lich King - By all counts, Voldemort from Harry Potter is a Lich of sorts as well. Essentially, it is a Wizard that has attained somewhat of a borrowed immortality. They lock part of their soul in a horcrux to keep it safe and tethered to this plane of existance. If the horcrux(s) is destroyed, the Lich is killed. Otherwise, they keep coming back.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
~Oreg.
Oh, and here's the wikipedia entry for Lich: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lich

Tolkiens' lord of the Rings: the head Wring Wraith was a Lich King
I think you might have been mistaken Oregano, i believe he was the Witch King and not the Lich King, but if he was infact a lich i will stand corrected

a lich is essentially an undead wizard.
Flake
January 10th, 2006, 10:38 AM
In the movies he's definitely referred to as "witch king", as far as I remember in the books it's "Lord of the Nazgul".
Might also be referred to as a "lich king" at some point though- I have the book right here but I'm not about to skim read 1000 pages.:teeth:
S.C. Watson
January 10th, 2006, 11:41 AM
..but I'm not about to skim read 1000 pages.:teeth:
Likewise. I'm fairly confident that in the books he's refered to as a Lich, but I'm not going to stress it. Same diff: Big, Bad Undead Magic Usin' Fool. >:D
Great sketches so far peoples. I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with this round!
Cheers,

Cool, fun concept. Hope I can do it justice.
http://www.cheeseman-meyer.com/art/sketchbook/New/LadyFredrickson07.jpg
To call Lady Fredrickson her husband's assistant would be a vast misrepresentation, and severely underestimate the Lady's capabilities. Her husband's maladies often prevent him from entering certain arenas of strong magic, and Lady Fredrickson has on many occasions strode boldly into the jaws of death, unsupported by any, to soon re-emerge with the quiet confidence of the victorious -- an attitude many have compared favorably with that of Her Royal Highness our beloved Queen Victoria.
Beuatiful, elegant, educated and poised, yes, but also a match for any man or beast to roam this earth.
darth massacre
January 10th, 2006, 04:20 PM
I always thought it was called the Witchking of Angmar and not the LichKing. Voldemort is also a Lich as Oreg mentioned.
Here's the AD&D definition
http://www.planetadnd.com/interactive_books/mm00185.php
Edit: Idiot...didn't notice Oreg posted the Wikipedia link already. :D

Anyway I thought the focus is on Lady Isabelle with Lord Fredrickson in the background?
Correct - Lord Fredrickson isn't necessary, merely mentioned as background information. However, if you want to include him, feel free.

Voldemort means basically "flight of the dead" in French. So Voldemort by his very name could be considered a lich I guess. However the Witch King in LOTR never actually died until the end of the 3rd book, The ring transformed him into a nazgul but I don't think he was ever technically dead or undead... so I don't know if he could actually be considered a lich. (Semantics... I know.)
When I think of a Lich though I think of an evil spirit infesting a decrepit pile of bones that casts dark magic against the unprotected. In LOTR, more like the Barrow Wights than the Nazgul.
The Witch King sure was a badass in any case. And maybe that's all that matters.

From the diary of Lady Isabelle Fredrickson
November 1, 1873
Carpathia
We have arrived at last, and found domicile in an abandoned abbey near the castle. Jonathan has begun his preparations with feverish haste; I fear for his health and sanity! Since leaving London he has slept but little, and no longer dines with me, or even shares my bed. I pray that this shall be our last encounter with the evil that has hounded him since childhood, that he may strike down its unholy form with the power of his fierce soul and the blade of his holy dagger! And if he should fail, I pray that he be delivered from the cursed existence I fear awaits him. Dearest Jonathan! If only you knew , if only I could tell you what I have learned from you over these many years. If only I have the strength to raise that dagger against you in the direst extremity of danger to your immortal soul! I love you, dearest Jonathan, and will not see you condemned to the hellish existence of those things you now hunt! Forgive me, my love.

WOw guys, to crazy id like to go through all these and crit them individually. Really inspireing. What I noticed alot of people did was alot of tradtional and conservative costumes. When I look at them I assossicate with that time period.
I took a different approach to the fasion. I wanted to mix egyptian, indian and "victorian?" fasion.
From a design brief perspective did I do the right thing? More of a fantastic fictional approach to what she's wearing rather than non-fictional. How would an employer look at the path that I took? Yae or Nae?
I am a student and I do want to do this professionally like by april lol. I could use all the pointers I could get.
Thanks guys and keep up the good work.

Masque: I think you, me, and Interceptor need to have a little friendly THUNDERDOME!!!!!
llothcat: Not too shabby so far!
Sean: Welcome to the club. The line weight is too even amongst all the objects and the character. Gives it no sense of depth. I think you can get a lot of ideas on how to make the lines more dynamic by looking at Chuckmate's.

Another great week of the CHOW! A few entries really stand out to me so far:
Daz - I'm glad someone here decided to paint this lady in action! Great sense of character on her too, she doesn't seem as harsh-looking as typical 19th century ladies. Great work!
Chuck - really digging the canvas texture for that oil portrait look and her facial features! The only thing that bugs me are the ruffles in her skirt - they're just not reading well >_<
Dominus - great costume design, this really stands out among the others! She certainly has a darker and supernatural presence, as if her husband has quite rubbed off on her. Though I don't know if any proper lady would show so much skin in that era... how scandalous! ;)
Keep going guys, can't wait to get to the polls on this one!

On Lady Frederickson's shoulders rest the truth about her husband's worsening condition, yet her undying love for him perseveres as he seeks to find a cure for his affliction. Though each day more and more of his soul is lost, she stays adamantly beside him to help him fight the greatest of evils - across the world, and within himself.

Here goes my first entry.
I don’t really have time to throw some colors on this (as much as I’d love to) but I hope this’ll qualify.

got fed-up with it, it looks dry no zing or oomph, the gun's incase her husband wakes up in the middle of the night and is feeling a bit frisky (in a zombie kinda way).

hey yp1 - your entry has a striking resemblance to kate beckinsale from 'van helsing' - nose included. also looks like you're having some more fun with that wall paper pattern stuff (see below the gun).
cheers,

Just about 20 more hours to go fellas! For now I'm kinda stuck between Mainloop, Bumskee, Chuck and Djehuti's with Masque and Define's pencil sketches looking like they could totally tear the voting apart. Had Posh and Romance been in on this, it would be impossible to vote :lol
I kinda lost my way with this one as I was painting it......the update is prolly as close to the completed work as it can be. Psshh...I still gotta work on the COW. I hope I have enough time for that one.

wow great entries all. bumskee got a soft spot for all ur pics, love ur style..
here's my take on Lady Isabella Fredrickson ......
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/pataka/chow.gif
workin closely with all those chemicals, potions and elixers in the hope of findin a cure for her husband has completely transformed her perspective of the world we live in. u could say that Lady Isabella Fredrickson dosent just dream in black and white, only techicolour will do.
couldnt resist makin this pic a little more on the brighter side. will try and do a little more to it. great work all, amazin talent and ideas floatin around here.

Awesome entries everyone!
I usually don't do character's but thought I'd mix it up a bit so here's mine. I only had tonight to work on this so sorry about the lack of rendering in the gown!

glad you noticed red, thought of the most adventury type of victorian lady seen of late and it was kate, I wouldn't say the resmblance is striking but it's definitely there, just had to do an overlay of my ref to see how close I got, not bad I suppose. The pattern is infact from a chinese rug to bring in the travelling aspect of the character.

OH man, there are so many rad drawings.
Djehuti and Hurricane, You guys both really captured the character.
I have to say Im really impressed with the amount of incredibly talented artists there are here. I'm really looking forward to getting more involved at this forum!

Oh, PLEASE do another one like this soon, Oregano! I was working on my Puppet Master and Puppet entry, and didn't notice this challenge, but I LOVE historical fantasy! Maybe you could do one kind of like this but in a different kind? Perhaps:
A librarian (man) in a dungeon library where all the books are locked with big locks, and each has a key. This is because they are dangerous books, and only the librarian has the key. This might be set in the 1800s, also.
A mid-1700s setting, where the character is a man who hunts down aristocrats: dead ones, that is. He would be a ghost hunter.
I don't know, these are just ideas. Anything historical would be great in my opinion.

Just under 8 hours to go.
Didn't catch Hurricane's piece....I LIKE...but as Carni says, I think the clevage could be shifted to match the V-neck on the corset. Love the pet perched on her hand.
@Carni - Your Lady Isabelle reminds me of something from a book I read a long time ago. It would add to the whole picture if you had a matching background which should be super fun to do in the same style. But yeah...8 hours give or take.
