but as i am working from a slow net connection in japan, i am going out shopping soon( its hard to look through all forums and then try to get a train when a snow storm hits your part of japan) and i was wondering what are the tried and true sketching pencils that artists use to do life sketching? i mean obviously you dont sit down with a number 2 and mech pencil like i have been doing,so what is that i should use?

thanks!

try 9b, but actually it is not the pencil that matters, (should have been stated before)

I don't think there's any tried and true implement for life sketching, 'cept your eyes. Some people use mech. pencils just like you, others you charcoal or chalk or graphite leads... It's all up to what you're most comfortable with using. Myself I use Derwent HB pencils for almost all my drawing...

I use 2b or anything softer.

I do use mechanical pencils... but I guess it all comes down to preference. Just buy a bunch and see what you like and don't like, and go from there.
