Hey everyone!
Since January 1st, I've started doing daily self portraits, and could use some insights in some of the recent ones.
I've been focusing on value and colour, so I would really appreciate crits in those areas.
These were all done in OpenCanvas1.1, so I have the .wpe's too for those interested.

I really like the first two (especially the second, but you mis-dated the first). The second two are maybe a bit rougher or perhaps just not as expressive, but are still not bad.
Very neat. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

You seem to have a god grasp of your features already (looking in the mirror to much, hehe) so to challenge yourself, I suggest you start doing REALLY f**ed up expressions, try mixing in a hand and arm, maybe o a full body shot,
you get the idea. I recommend you do natural media aswell. Makes you think a whole lot more when laying down strokes, no ctrl z there man!
Cheers Tim

These are looking very nice - the complementary color piece I think is exceptional. Just a few things.
Be careful with some of your proportioning - in the bottom piece you seem to have made your nose too long. On the first piece, your neck is way too thin - this may just be because you can't see all of it, but the collar says otherwise. Also, the level and distancing of the eyes seems a little off-kilter in most of them, but everyone has trouble with that, so just something to think about.
I'd say that from a figurative standpoint, the second is the best, but the way you've worked with color and value on the first piece is too nice to overlook - you've established a fine contrast without killing the tone. Be sure to watch that on your figures with more subtle lighting - in the bottom two, you seem more concerned about color than tone - remember, tone trumps color. I also agree with Tim - some f'ed up expressions would help you both creatively and proportionately. Also, maybe try something more conceptual and surreal, establish a series narrative of sorts.
Very, very nice, man. Keep it up.

Thanks a lot for the comments and crits everyone!
Dogfood - Thanks, I cant believe I didnt even notice the wrong date! :P
TimPaatkins - Thanks, you're right, Im gonna try and do some more variety with these. I didnt post them here, but I do a lot of natural media portraits, too. Also, I try and practice traditional painting techniques even when working digitally, no ctrl-z for me :)
Narcolepsy - Thanks a lot for the crits! You're absolutely correct, I need to pay more attention to my proportions. I'll try and do more expressions, too, thanks.

wow you work with color very well. and all your paintings are quite expressive. I would like to see more of that in your drawings. Try doing what you do with paint, and do tonal studies, break up the form into patches of light or dark.

Thanks a lot guys!
timpaatkins - Thanks watercolour's tough. Gonna do more watercolour ones once I get a new sketchbook! The lineweight one was a good experiment, gonna do more, too.
rWDrk - Thanks for the kind words!
Rainblade - Thank you! I did these drawings in december, and didnt start experimenting with colour painting like this until January, definitely gonna try to incorporate everything that Ive learned into the pencils!

Really nice use of colour in these. My only real suggestion would be to watch your proportions... ideally they should be the same in every one (unless your nose grows and shrinks on its own, but I find that unlikely). It's a bit inconsistent. Great work, regardless. More!

My favourite ones are these:
lines with pencils (http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/may06118.jpg)
impressionistic brushwork (http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/may06201.jpg)
even more boldly loosed brushwork (http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/keepitsimpleshithead.jpg)
have you tried to do caricature of yourself, thats fun :D

These are cool.
Nice and loose.
I love to look at the many styles of pixel pushin digital art.
What has to be the definition of irony is how people, myself included,
try their hardest to make their stuff look traditional. Why is that? I have this program <wink> called painter
that lets me paint with a natural media look. Why is that a desirable thing?
We will see something odd and new from somebody that will change stuff in art.
And I bet it will be digital.
Just an odd thing to cross my mind when looking at your cool painterly style./m\
