Recent shtuff.

Character revisited again, planning out design and functionality. - note; I haven't tried doing any studies on how to plan out a figure, be it human or monster.. so im trying to work from direct observation of how other people 'start off' when i see their works =/..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/characterdesignstages.jpg

if anyones played EVE-Online before? amarr ship to a merlin caldari frigate.. doodle.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/amarrmothershipref.jpg

And now to something very recent, Ive lately been interested in getting into halflife 2 Mapping, i have jack shit knowledge about it, but im finding it very fun when hammer keeps crashing on me, but otherwise, still very fun. I use to (still do actually) play a halflife 1 mod called Natural Selection, aliens vs marines except not like an Aliens Movie port over, much fun, a mod that incorporates FPS with an element of RTS. So ive been thinking of a map to design with the hammer:source program for when HL:NS:Source comes and ive been bugging the guys in the CA.org mIRC channel for ages on what needs improving on this, so ill post the progress, theres alot more progress shots to this but i think ive already spammed alot of pictures as it is, ill try to make it short.

How i was thinking at the time:

Think cave, pitch black, cant see a thing, a small marine task force sent to an abandon installation to investigate why its been abandoned in the first place. Marines start in a small elevated fortified position overlooking this basin (directly above viewpoint of concept work), the basin itself is a dense swamp/jungle temperament, high humidity, foggy, move like a brick in shit through the swamps, Aliens start in 1 of 3 points with their Hive, the underground cave (background) which is meant to be pitch black, forces marines to use their flash lights unlike in HL:NS, emptying bowels factor++ hopefully ingame.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/tropicalAssaultv1.jpg

the second alien starter point is in another cave, but in the cliff side on the far back right of the basin (not.. entirely visible at this point), marines must have direct access to that caravel from starting point that overlooks the whole basin, giving them an advantage from the unforgiving swamp below IF they can keep aliens away from not fucking it up (snapping the cables, wrecking control panels, etc) otherwise marines will have to traverse the rocky paths up to the second hive. Third starter hive is far right of the basin, outdoors, in plain view, tree trunks and dense foliage only shelter it from assault.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/tropicalassaultv3fix.jpg

I kinda got into colouring a bit too quick without adressing a number of perspective and compositional issues, but regardless:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/tropicalassaultcolourtest2.jpg

Revised perspective.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/tropicalassaultv4fix.jpg

And again, thanks to Characters helpful paintover and compositional adjustment (much < 3 )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/wtfux.jpg

A suggestion from davi to move the cave to the left, and a suggestion from mr_pickleyum to get rid of that 'pointer' look on the background building that leads the eye to nowhere, and is a bad error that needed to be fixed. decided to add a support beam and rail ontop of that 'pointer' to make it look more like a docking pad as was its original intended purpose (although not actually involved in gameplay, its merely background atmospheric art)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/mawcpttest5.jpg

and that wraps it up so far, im still working on the concept map on getting it right, but theres still issues with the cage, and i cant put my finger on it.. and pickle cant put his pickles on it either.. so im kindof stumped at the moment, suggestions would be highly appreciated =D.

other than the cage, anything else aswell before i move onto Coloring this.

otherwise, ill try to keep my sketchbook updated when i can with what i can.

Thanks for your time < 3.

I'm gonna give you some of the same advice I gave waronmars, even though your work is quite different. Some of the drawings feel like you're rushing into the shading phase. It seems that line is your strong suit, moreso than modelling is. (as in shading round forms, not 3d modelling)

Some of your strongest pieces are ones where you convey the largest forms first. In a lot of your pieces, it seems that you too quickly move into the minutae of the drawing, which neglects the bigger picture. I do it to, but I've been trying to force myself to sit back from whatever I'm working on, and try to flesh it out all over the place, equally. Also, it would be cool to see something figural, like a person. Anyway, you seem to have a good grasp on perspective, and your work is pretty architectural. I feel like you should cut that with a little old fashioned painterly techniques to add a new dimension to the linear nature of your work as it stands right now.

Good stuff so far. See you around IRC.

Caravel Cage has been taken out, because its warped whichever way its positioned, even now that ive added a 3rd vanishing verticle point after dfacto's advice, the thing continues to be a thorn in the rear.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/maw-cptperpsectivestesttake3.jpg

Now that the pictures in 3pt perspective, changing all the structures in the picture to accomodate, guidelines are:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/maw-cptperpsectivestesttake5-fullsc.jpg

And Paul, cheers for the advice, but im not sure what you mean by 'old fashioned painterly techniques', as for drawing/painting something figural, ive been meaning to do it, just haven't done it before and even though its not an excuse, i feel embarressed sometimes drawing any of the human anatomy without getting it right the first time =/. New school years coming up, alot of time ahead to get stuck in and not give a shit what other people think if its bad or not, so i'll try, heh.

Objectivity is probably one of the more important skills you can have when working in some venue of commercial design. Whenever someone gives you a critique, keep it in mind as something to watch out for so that you can apply their critique to your future work. That way, you can develop enough of an eye to know what works and what doesn't so you both finish work faster, and with less help, or outside input.

As for the "old fashioned painterly techniques", I was talking about making forms that are less linear. Your work lacks the "soul" that some more organic lines and forms can give it. I'd suggest studying things that aren't straight and mechanical. Seashells, leaves, trees, people, cloth. Cloth's an especially good one.

Anyway, hope this and what we talked about in IRC helps some.

Whew, been a while slacki-- working hard 24/7 =x.

Anyways, (1)2 andrew loomis pages ive transfered into my sketchbook for reference, (2)going to expand on the pose studies on the next few pages, (3)a 10 minute bnw value study painting and just got a little a6 sketchbook today from the shops and began doing (4)face sketches and (5)another of my school library foyer.

the face practice started off when there was an old woman looking at me in the bus on the way to tafe (middle face on the picture), so i drew her face(or tried to =x), after that just slowly added onto it with other faces from the mind, having trouble with odd-looking jaws/chins and lips, going to do some face studies from loomis.

Ill post up some life-drawing charcoals later when I can find a digital camera to make snapshots of them.

A small update, but one nonetheless. A design for FlipMcGee's 'Design Your Mech 2-in-1 Challenge'..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/Tarantula-BARobotics.jpg

Not sure if I should work on it digitally, been a while now.. The text on the top right reads:

"Tarantula" Broadside Assault Robotics
-With custom 'smiley' face plate

*Problems that need addressing
-Foreshortening, size differentiation between closer and farther shapes is key. [(for depth of view) ie: its right claw attatched to the back is meant to be further toward view]
-Light & Light radiosity needs to be clearer / more defined lightsource
-Lineweight needs to be more coherant. Light =! thin line & vise versa

this was what I thought after finishing it today for things to work on along with better designs, functionality and getting aesthetics right.

-edit- Values could use alot of work too.

Cheers spats, ill try, heh.

Shield has been given a bit of attention this time, made it circular to keep in line with the rest of the shapes used throughout the robots design. Only thing I didnt pay attention to was the atmospheric rescession toward the back of it to be on the same plane as the legs at the back, noted for later.

Pirates!

If anyone's played Savage: Battle for Newerth?.. I've been keeping a fun thought in mind of making a pirate mod for the hummie side, just been thinking/drawing a bit for it, heres 2 concepts for the stronghold, considering just ditching the ship (ship on land? wth?) and turning the stronghold into the wreckage of the ship with a kindof-pub living area around it.

The different ones in each are levels of the stronghold, the stronghold you start with during the game begins at level 1, and can be upgraded to level 2 allowing more tech and then 3, again, allowing more tech. I figured keeping the pirate ship thing as an easy way of saying that its pirate influenced, but I feel it looks cheesy or doesnt make sense to build a ship on land near no water, so I'll be looking into ways of changing it (perhaps a ship that ran aground, is a wreckage, parts of it deconstructed by the sailors of the ship and resources used to construct their abodes + the pub, must have a pub =D ) ;

in order, 2 motion figures, the model moved every 30 seconds for 10 minutes and you'd have to get as much done as you can within 30 seconds before she/he moves again. Fun stuff, I suggest others to try it if they haven't already. Next is a figure study and a camera with the lense removed, didnt have enough time to finish it, was a borrowed camera and I had to return it, the following was a task we did in life drawing, choose/crop an area of the model's figure and draw away.

the multipose sketcher are cool, I do that a fair amount in a local coffee shop.
The torso is a little squished into the frame. but using a frame a s a composition device always helps me. The perspective on the lens oval of the camera is a bit off..its a bit wonky.
Are you photoing these? you need to brace your camera. I have a monopod that i use to take art pics it really helps steady the camera in low light

keep drawing!
More art faster

I'll look into getting a monopod, I'll deffinately be needing one anyway since the course im currently doing has a photography module in it, plus I may be getting a new and better camera with the monopod - with regards to your question yeah I am (trying) to photo the pics I post with not much success. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/mophoanim.jpg

The one directly above is for an un-assessed project we were given for when we get the time, traditional animation short in Flash 8 involving a man-made object that we all had to write down on a piece of paper and taken out of a bucket after being passed around the class, I got a mobile phone, some other poor bastard got a Helicopter and not a fairly simple object like a mouse/mobile phone/pencil since I originally thought we'd have our own ideas to work with..

Anyway, the first task we were given after all the OH&S crap was dealt with, the topic being Your Personal View on Suburbs. Scribbled up some rough ideas(1st) and working on one to see what itd look like(2nd).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/wiptask1b.jpg

I don't mean to sound bigheaded but I also feel like im getting better with life drawing, yet still remaining to be critical about my work for mistakes and errors worth learning off, also sticking to realism as much as possible rather than working toward a 'style' before changing these elements the way I'd like to, and do so with atleast some confidence.

Although I can say right now that im not comfortable with doing faces and I have to work on some portraits. :bashful:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/life%20drawing/floorsittingfigure.jpg

Sitting figure, was trying to erase the lines (leg/thigh) but didnt have enough time at the end, I need to work faster.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/life%20drawing/sittinghunchedfigurejpg.jpg

I need smaller GSM paper with the charcoals i work with i think, it picks too much grain up from the woodfire charcoals im using. I also need to stop drawing from the wrist and work bigger, and work on correlating the basic shapes in a figure into perspective and the right proportions.

hey Faf
you been working
I think the one little drawing whereyou are using only tone is actaully the one that starts to look like a rounded form. You tend to rely on line and the outlines get to heavy to really define the form. I would reccommend tthat you try some drawings where you use the lines to describe the internal and rounded features of the forms and do more of the tonal studies I think that approach is a really possitive direction for you to explore.

Another update;

These 3 were from a long-pose session, one pose for the night (2hrs), so I thought id split it in about 33 minute lots for comparisons.

How I usually start out..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/laidbackfigure-exp2.jpg

Trying to use tone only..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/laidbackfigure-exp1.jpg

Not being so harsh with the lines and trying to use a dark outline (which would have covered the rest of the space as a background) instead to describe the lines I would have used.. alot of mistakes particularly the hand area, and between the model's (our) left arm and her torso there was meant to be a cushion but I didnt get around to that before the time went up. Have to work on tone.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/laidbackfigure-exp3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/lyingfigure1.jpg

Decided not to take a break at the last life drawing session just yet and revisited another life drawing (top left, figure sprawled over chair) and was just trying to redraw the model again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/figureset-exp.jpg

also..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/photomanip1.jpg
cropping of shots used (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/partsphotomanip1.jpg)

I wish I could post more than just life drawings, I just haven't been feeling creative at all or start on something. I only have a photomanip (above + croppings of the shots I used) we had to do for class which looks pretty fake.. there are also a few other projects due soon, one of which is to illustrate a political, social, or economic issue in a format that describes the problem, a solution and the end result of the solution to the problem in either a comic-style strip, transition of 3 seperate images or a metamorphises of the illustration on the one image, so perhaps there'll be something on that later, as for anything else though, I dont know.

This isnt the finished version and it'll probably change (orientation and position of australia and the bg stuff), but so far this is a sketch of a final idea;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/classillustration1024x768-1.jpg

I found out that you could just do a transition of color on the one piece and not do 3 pieces as a problem, solution and outcome, things kinda changed :\. Anyway, I'm interested to know what information you get from looking at this, and even though it may be a little exagerated, dont let this hold back on critique, if you have any opinions id be grateful if you would share them :).

-edit- Australia looks wonky, ill get ref before i draw it again =x

Great life studies you got going in here man. I wish I could find some of those in my city a bit more readily... :| But your silhouettes are pretty good too. Though I would like to see you take them out of the shadows and into the light and render them proper like, knaw mean? :p Good stuff in here nonetheless. That city manip that you did is pretty amazing, though I think you could have added to it by throwin in some destruction and fire with the lightning. Just my version of it.

I think you've got a good concept of thinking in 3 dimentions.

Your life drawings look good but it seems that you take too much time drawing the under drawing...when you start off try this. Only view the body as spheres and cylinders...draw the body very loosely using only these shapes focusing only on getting the angles and position to look right..Then with a stronger pencil you start going over. It may sound stupid but personally i find that this method helps you create so much more depth so much faster and it keeps you on track.

Good enthusiasm so far. till next time

some side-view ship doodles in the last 10 min of class, using silhouettes again.

lately had an interest in flying fortresses. the first two arent as obvious with the scales (no reference to true size), I think the third works a bit better, but I like the shapes in the first.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/ship-designsno123.jpg

-edit- fourth added, I like this one much better but references to a 'city' could be more apparent, was meant to be toward the back of the ship.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/ship-designsno4.jpg

The ships from homeworld inspire me alot, espescially the Taiidan ships and their repeated geometrical shapes jutting out along the top and sides of the ships ie:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/Photos/Kilnshotsb2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/Photos/Kilnshotsb1.jpg

These we're taken from an eyehole on the door of a kiln, heated to 1100 degrees celsius, other students works were in there getting fired after glazing.

Tuesday coming up there will be woodfiring kilns brought up, and on monday a larger electric kiln will be fully heated to 1300d/c, these kilns are usually set to take a while to heat up because if you have work inside the kiln, a rapid increase in temperature causes any moisture to turn into steam and get trapped inside any pockets of air or bubbles inside the ceramic scupltures, when that occurs, the pressure causes the bubbles to crack, and the ceramics may also explode, so warming it slowly will dry the sculptures and any moisture inside the chamber first and allow the ceramics to be fired without being ruined. The heating of a material or substance causes it to expand. I was not sure how to get the inside of the hole in focus though, still a newbie with cameras, I didn't want to get any closer than I was incase I might fry the sensors inside the camera, but fiddling around with it I guess it was just the heat that made it so blurry inside.

Oh well, adds some contrast I guess, there were subtle blues on the rest of the image in the metal of the door, so I tweaked the colors in photoshop a little bit to help bring out the orange glow and show more of the scratches and wear/tear on the panel, I thought they looked interesting.

I CAN BREATHE! - Feels like its been ages, a lot has happened in the last month or so but ill keep it short and bring on a few things and sketches. In a nutshell I moved from Australia to New Zealand and am currently in a 3d animation course @ Lifeway college and its been straight up awesome so far, regardless, some pictures;

(the top right ones' perspective is terrible, I'm thinking of converting it into some sortof post-apocalyptic.. Restaurant!.. the engines on the front are like air conditioning units?)

I've also been trying to get into matte painting.. its hard getting things looking right, particularly when its underwater, costic(sp?) lighting, or any lighting underwater in general is a nightmare to get looking convincing when it comes to photo's, any critiques are greatly encouraged as I'm a little lost :).

A lot of problems with the one below, too, most prominent being the reflections of the ships in the foreground, the difference of contrast between the far background ships and the contrast of the ground plane in determining its 'real' position in space, the color or lackthereof and such, regardless, critiques are still also very welcome.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/Matte_painting_01_1024x768.jpg

The references, blatantly taken from EVE obviously, I love a lot of the EVE-online designs of the ships, kinda reminds me of homeworld ships. The bottom photo was stitched in photoshop, apparently theres a better program for stitching called Pano Pro or Panel Pro though, I took the photo's while I was on my way to Queenstown in New Zealand.

speaking of 2d animators, orgesticulanismus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDHfx9nde14) by Mathieu Labaye is a must see, embedding is disabled, its about an animators father passing away at 55 from multiple sclerosis, and personal reinvention of movement. When figure drawing do not give the figure a hard defined edge.
Instead, define the shadows.
Even if you had no lines defining the outer edge of the figure, the shadows would do it just fine.
Trust me I made the same mistake for a long time.

personally I'd shoot myself If I drew the details, so I tried to keep to simple shapes and trying to get the weight right whilst sticking to 24 frames for 1 second. The point at which the forearms come down could've had more frames dedicated to slowing down the impact and making it feel more 'top heavy' rather than just shuffling, but I ran out of frames slowing it down already D: .

g'day ash,

cheers for the comments, id say the character was inspired from the previous design creeping into it, and I always thought necrons from the warhammer universe looked badass and remembered the elongated spine vertebrae, and I think those mutant apes from that game Farcry that scared the crap out of me the first time :), hence the clawed fingers/toes and the odd thumb.

For reference I was looking up how an ape walks because it was the closest animal to that shape, so I tried to get a rough walk cycle from the various video's I scrounged up.

At the moment I'm studying at Lifeway College in New Zealand for 3D animation, and we've just recieved our liscences for Maya, so the past 2 days I've been fiddling around with it.

My suggestion is to just start with a poly cube/sphere and play with it, and familiarising yourself with edges, vertices (corners, or where polygonal lines intersect) and faces, left hand side is your basic adjustment tools, like Scale, Move and Rotate, and top will be your specialised adjustment tools, like Extrude (important), Merge Vertices (also handy - *more afterwards) and Split Polygon Tool, the file menu's above will lead to more intricate options, and some of the same in your specialised adjustment tools but with custom options (the cube symbol next to an option means 'click to customize').

(from earlier)* hold V then click and move a corner/vertice to snap it ontop of another vertice in order to clean up bad topography - topography meaning your general organisation of polygons, where i said 'quads' earlier, meaning all your polygons having 4 edges preferably. - just be sure to merge those vertices when you finish up so that you dont have overlapping vertices.

I'll type up some more later today, but if I leave this later im going to be in for a rough day if I dont get atleast 4 hours sleep :), hope this helps some, and have fun with maya, just remember to back up your work on maya if you get far into it.

cheers.

Wow, I really like those matte-paintings! Care to give pointers how to do that kind of stuff? I wanted to get into that kind of thing sometime soon. I especially like the last one. I guess you modelled it in 3D for the most part?

Other than that, I can reallysee a shift in your lineconfidence throughout the SB, shapes getting more defined and you get a feeling for form more and more , really visible in your latest life-drawing.

Nice work mister :)

worxe
July 7th, 2008, 08:58 AM
Cheers Faust :), for matte paintings, I'm no expert on it but I quickly came to realise; get as many references as you can, preferably take your own photos as using other peoples photos for your matte paintings can lead to legal problems obviously, play around with the layer blending modes in photoshop as theyer sometimes invaluable. I tend to start off gray scaling all my references as trying to match all the colors goes along the lines of me wanting to gouge out my eyes with my thumbs ;), matching in grayscale is far easier. After than I use hue and saturation to get some basic colors in, and painting over it after wards using color pick a lot from the basic hue/adjustment colors I use originally.

Unfortunately I don't have much to post as I don't have all my files with me at the moment and my scanner/computer are in NZ. But I will be starting up an untutored life drawing class at my college on the 23rd so hopefully i'll get some more life drawing pictures up then :).

Cwn- No worries - I found it fun drawing the contours for those sessions 'cause it was one of those moments where something finally clicked and got a little further in figures :), besides, the contours over by the pecs for example are off-putting because they don't follow the muscles at all and the arms look tacked on because of it.

Gringo- Thanks mate :), I'll probably be continuing the contours thing but not with so many lines, I find a few of them help me keep my head level when trying to get the proportions accurate.

update; some farts on a page, I should draw with pen/paper more often than relying on photoshop - sorry for the crappy photo's, don't have a workable scanner and this camera is on the blink :[, and id try and render these.. but I have no idea where to start using a pen, so any critiques or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey there!
you got some really sweet stuff going on here. Your digital stuff is quite impressive, already like the black and white pre-sketches of robots and mechs.
Your line quality in pencils could improve while you would try to use less strokes to describe a shape.
You brought me a great idea with that lion drawing, first without afterwards with reference - I bet you can remember the right shape pretty good afterwards.
cool man, keep it up like this!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/char_test_color.jpg

A quick turnaround work in progress for the texture, still working on trying to find out how to get multiple stacked speculars so it doesn't look plastic, aim is realism so trying to get SSS working too and my brain is fried from spending a week just reading up and trying to understand how lighting/light works , its really amazing stuff if you spend the time not just painting it but reading up the math behind it. Going to do the textures procedually using painted maps.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/th_character.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/?action=view&current=character.flv)

last but not least, next character im going to spend modelling for quite a while, but still designing it/doing orthographics for it, there is way too much detail though, and probably around 400 pieces of geometry to model at a guestimate so i will still be working on establishing some more 'dominant' shapes to tie the design together;

I'll post some more later when I get my hands on a camera/scanner, got some life drawing in aswell.

a WIP shot from my storyboard im doing up for a color/mood board, part of a 30-40 second animation to work on for the next 2 months. - using one of my old robots that i've always wanted to model; link (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/Tarantula-BARoboticsfix.jpg)

quick update from staying up overnight of some thumbnails that took too long for comfort, got carried away doing the internals for the above robot, still, helps me think about what the hell im going to do about balancing that shield.

ill remember to do another thumb between the top two showing how the arm will look like before it stretches out, then do a sideview series so i dont get lost during modelling/doing proper orthos for it.

few after-lunch thumbs from today, been rigging all week so havent had much time for my concepts, decided to see if a more cartoony robot would be better.

decided a cartoony robot would be better left for something longer than 30-40 seconds, going with a more friendly look with the giant turtle/monkey robot, work from last night. - also realised this is pretty similar to a concept i did a while ago; link (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/bnwexp3bbright.png), so I used it to look at colors with.

blocking out the characters head still but besides that ive been changing the camera alot so some parts of the character wont be shown.. like the feet I modelled earlier, so remember peeps; plan your camera! it'll save you lots of time! (having said that I can re-use the pistons for the back of the head so its not all wasted :} ).

-edit- the feet/pistons I was talking about earlier, this was the wip for it;

Your animation looks interesting based on the boards. I'm really liking how the model is coming out so far, and you seem to have plenty of ortho views of it to work from. The whole thing, from concept to model, will be a nice package for your portfolio.

Have fun rigging that bad boy. :)

Hey Senira! and thanks, and I am aiming for a good piece for my folio, although I havent focused as much as the other students in terms of showing off modelling, rigging or compositing etc only, i think i'll be doing a lot of everything at this point so I'm hoping all goes well :).

Cheers Kidult, you have some pretty awesome work yourself, I particularly like your skill at rendering with the beach paintings :).

Gday again, posting a shot mid-animation for the assignment, cant do much at the moment since i've been rendering all the passes the past couple days, almost finished.

after this I want to work on the character more as I think so much more can be done with it.

Cheers GRMC, hopefully this justifies the wait :) - an update of the project, our deadline was two days ago, and I hope I've got enough in to count for a pass, got everything in on time otherwise but I still want to work on this and polish it properely, there are still lots of things that I want to take out/put in to make it better because I really like working on it, there isnt any sound in it yet either and the animation is jerky at best as time was running out, the things I still have trouble with is mainly compositing, i simply dont know enough yet to make good use of it so i want to focus more on that, on the off time my modelling though as I dont feel im quick enough at it and im too slow when im blocking shapes out aswell as topology in general.

comments/critiques are very welcome regardless.

in other news, THE HOLIDAYS, WOOP WOOP! I have some drawings waiting to be uploaded when I fly back home that I'll upload soon, just need a break from 3d for a bit to get back into drawing again, whew!

-edit- Also, heres the background matte painting that was a bit too blurred in the composite, I had to rush this within half an hour, photo ref was used.

m'back, art has a way of reeling me back in again every time, ill get right to the work;

animation walk cycle (somewhat ego-eccentric walk) blocking WIP in stepped mode using the moom character/rig.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/th_Playblast_WIP10seconds.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/?action=view&current=Playblast_WIP10seconds.flv)

discontinued project for now, me and two others were going to do a gobelins/burning safari inspired shortfilm based on macaques (japanese snow monkeys of Honshu), a few concepts before the team dispanded, we felt we wanted to do more personal work before the year was out.

WIP.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/character_concept_illo.jpg

figured a third arm would be an interesting thing to animate - WIP, animation sheets otw.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fafnird/sketchbook/character_concept_animationsheet.jpg

below is some background storyboarding for the character, wanted to shoot for a somewhat claustraphobic, creepy atmosphere indoors, and vast outdoors or a few really large interior rooms, while the images might not be clear, i hoped the moving silhouettes would help it read better and that the floors are highly reflective if it were finally to be animated, they are soley done just to see what kind of environment the characters based in - but by all means feel free to critique these.

a possible 'intro', ill be doing concepts based on the thing in the background just before the door shuts.

two awesome peeps from weta digital came in the other day to look at all our work at the college (for recruitment purposes), funnily enough my teacher has a sick sense of humor and decided to point at me first before going around the class to 'show' work first because "hey that nervous-looking guy'll brown his pants as soon as we go over there so we'll start with him first!", was all good in the end and had a few lols.

more later, C&C very welcome.

Good detail in your orthos and sketches. But you should begin to put more effort into your digital paintings. Look at master paintings and artists here on CA and just copy their work. It's all for practice so you can get used and more familiar with mixing colors appropriately. Once you've become comfy with that, do more. Never stop learning and getting better. You have the potential to make your digital work a lot stronger. Your enviros aren't too bad, though you could attempt to venture out of the dark and try more lit scenes. Look at Idiot Apathy and his work. Same with any of the people on the top banner. Learn from those.
