hello.
here`s a fast way of texturing your artwork.
this is just one way, and by experimenting with it you can get some awesome results in no time at all.
this is done in PhotoShop 7.

1 - open your artwork file. duplicate your file, make it a grayscale, and blur it a bit. save this as a PSD file and close it.

2- on your original file - create a grey rectangle in a layer on top of what you wish to texture.

3 - texture your rectangle with a pattern of your choice (in this case "snake skin" ) using Filter>Texture>Texturizer.

4 - change the top layer`s mode to "overlay" and duplicate
it until it looks o.k. to you.

5 - on your top "overlay" layer do a Filter>Distort>Displace with the 2 option boxes on 50%(in the filter. you`ll see). click OK, then PS will ask you to choose a file. choose your grayscale blured file. now you have an "overlay" distorted layer + an "overlay" regular layer underneath it. play with the bottom "overlay" layer`s blending mode and opacity untill it looks o.k. to you.

6 - flatten the whole thing, then duplicate your artwork and change the top layer to multiply. play with the opacity a bit.

7- flatten it all again. on a new "overlay" layer use your wacom (or mouse, i guess..) to add more detail and further enhance the texture.

8 - and there you have it.
note: don`t rely on those steps alone when creating your artwork. experiment, toggle this, tweak that, paint over the thing untill it looks great.
that`s it. hope it helps you in any way.
crazy people.

simpler, yeah. but it never looks right. and it often just seem exactly that - a pattern stamped all over your design.
that`s not efficiency.
that`s just being lazy.
