cafe scene and caran dache portrait

this is an oil painting i did last semester that i just got back from the 79 new montgomery gallery. yeah i know, the proportions on the girl are a little messed up :P. the other is a caran dache in class work. thanks guys!

...maybe it´s a stupid question, but, what is CARAN DACHE?

thanks robolus! caran dache is actually a brand, and there are different types. the ones i used are watersoluble crayons. they are actually a lot like regular crayons, they are waxy. i think they are called neocolor II.

what kind of material are you working on with the Caran.. you using geso'ed boards.. or is it just heavy paper?

deth: for this one i used illustration board and then gessoed it. for the self portrait one i actually ripped off the back of a newsprint pad and then gessoed that. today im going to use an old canvas board with gesso...running out of money ;___;. so basically anything that you can gesso would work, heh.

Anyway Daarken, how long does a caran dache portrait take you? I am curious, and I'd like to give'em a try.

these are both really nice especially the portrait.. Nice ambience/colour arrangement. I really like the oil feel you've managed to achieve/.. do use solvents with your caran dache crayons.. cause they look more like oils than your oils to me! Have you found they work very well with any other mediums?

I was wondering if you could tell me something about the way you use the Caran D'ache. How do you apply the water to your picture?

When I saw this thread I pulled out my (warning long name coming up)

"Caran D'ache Lithographic Crayons in Pencil Form"

Mine are Supracolor II Soft, and to tell you the truth, every time I use them I feel like I should just stop drawing and painting altogether. Because, frankly the stuff I draw with these crayons looks as if it were made in kindergarten.

So please if you could give me some basic pointers on how to use them, it would be greatly appreciated.

kortez: the way i apply water is first i put down the layers of color i want, then i go back into it with either a wet fan brush or a wet flat brush. its like using lift off in other media. but anyway, first you start off the portrait like you are using pastels, and build up different layers. first i start off with red for the lighting parts of the face, then orange, then yellow. once i have those three layers down i put water ontop of that. then i go back ontop with different colors. hmmm, i will try and do a step by step for my next one. hope that helps some.

rohan: thanks! i actually use acrylics and gouache with the caran dache. the only solvent i use is water.

r_m: i think this one took about 2 - 3 hours.
