Myo~

K, I've had this stupidly dull artist's block on my head for months and, after taking in some advice and browsing found for inspiration, I finally got off my arse to do something about it.

So here goes:

Self portrait
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/sp_web.jpg
The eye is too small and the face shape is a bit off...must really do something about my fringe too - it gets in the way when trying to draw.

Quick self portraits
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/quicksps_web.jpg
The last one (profile angle) is the most accurate. Should've done these before the main one as a warm-up but I didn't think of that until afterwards...

Faces (drawn last night)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/faces_web.jpg
No ref, though I could've done with one. I drew these before going to bed.

Apples & A Feather (something I did today)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/Cherry_Blossom/apples_web.jpg
My first time using Gouche paints. I didn't want to use it too thickly because they came in itsy bitsy tubes! >.< And I need some to paint a portrait of my grandma for my grandad.

My mum likes it - she said it looks real. =3 And that apple on the right was dry - I was so diappointed!

Also debating whether to sign it or not 'cause I have a bad feeling I'll screw up my signature when using a ink pen. I'll test it out first....

So thaar we go. Please feel free to crit/comment to your heart's content. :)

nice very nice!
Love the hair, and the self portraits are very good, I can see they're supposed to be you, and its very good if you can do that.
The apples look too purple to me, but I like the painting, the table and feather look very lifelike.
Your lips need some more work, but overal; good!

The nose in the first one needs work, you can't see that it's bumping out and kinda looks like it's completely flat. I'm seeing real progress here, Gouche painting's great! Try using it more often and you'll improve miles.

You already know what went wrong with the portrait, so you're a good observer. In time you will get better at both observing and drawing, if you keep practicing that is.

I saw those apples and I said 'wow'. They are almost perfect. The apples should have some more refelection of the table I think. The highlights are well done. The woodtexture is okay, the feather too. But the shadows are too black and sharply edged. Perhaps a dark brown, like burnt umber with raw sienna or something, would have been better, along with a more gradual variation in tone. But still, the piece as a whole is very good!

Keep at it!

P.S. Sign the painting.

hey!! you stole my "baby~" thing!!! I do that!!

Anyway I like the angles of the faces and the way you've mixed things up. Except in most of your face drawings there seems to be one feature disproportionally smaller than it should be. Remember to always start the outline first and then go on with the eyes.

Noë: Thanks! Yeah, I hate drawing lips. =( Those apples were actually that colour (I hold the paintbrush in front of the object to check when I paint) - they're red American apples, or so my mum says...

Asoir: Thank you :) I think I'll make my granda's portrait my next gouche painting.

jermainevl: Cheers~ To be honest, I don't like the table - the colour is too strong for one, but I wanted to get it on the page because I mixed more paint than I needed (gotta reserve it for now). It was the first thing I painted so I think I progressed from there. I'll soften the shadows when I get home later.

Oh, and there was no reflection - my table isn't [i]that[/t] clean! I guess I should've polished it first. I'll sign the painting too.

Steinmetz: Nyeh :P

I usually do. >_< I'll be fore observant next time. Thanks. =)

-Optix: Lol, thanks.

Cheers for the comments everyone - I'll have a go at drawing people in public and let you know how it turns out, hehe.

Drawn kinda quickly 'cause my mum was almost finished cooking dinner so I had to clear the table up.
The first glass looks off - probably because the rim doesn't line up with the bottom so it doesn't have that overall roundness. I think I drew it too tall too.

Mum cooking and me after eating dinner. Ref: mirror.

Would've used a softer pencil but that would lead me to spending more time on it - I have an essay to do! :S

Thank you for your time,

hey quicksilver, really nice stuff :teeth:

you seem to have a good eye for self critiquing, fantabulous! so try and every now and again stop and look at what your drawing and be really critical about the proportions of everything.

i'm going to be really harsh here so don't read this if your in a good mood, cos' i'll spoil it.....

the first self portrait is good(especially the hair) but the eye is too small, the nose isn't really in perspective(looks flat), same could kind of be said for the lips. the neck is a bit thick looking and the adams apple(or female equivalent) is going off the the side. plus like you said, the over all shape of the head isn't quire right.....

the page of selfportaits are really good, patricianly the two on the right, really interesting perspectives and poses. proportions are pretty damn good on all of these!(eyes on the top left one are kinda in-proportionate)

the two heads are extremely good for no ref, only crit is the.....hair.....container.....thing.....? is not really in any kind of perspective, just kind of randomly placed with no particular weight or anything......

the painting of the apples, jermainevl pretty much said it all, you could try blending the feather a bit more the get that smooth texture. also theres a bit of white in the shadow.....

the glass at the top is very good, i really like the light in the shadow. i'm not sure, but i think the shadow should curve out more at the top of the shadow.....dose that make sense:S :dur:

the bottom hand seems like it could do with a little more flesh between the thumb and index finger, and the thumb's a bit big

last self portrait, try not to over emphasize the crease between the nose and mouth. the area around the right side of the neck is kind of strange.....

if you read this far without bursting onto tears, WELL DONE, really your stuff is awesome. hope i helped, probably nothing you hadn't already noticed, but hey, just in case:^^:

keep up the great work

Thanks, Kronos! ^_^ Lol, nah, I'm not that weak. >=P

you seem to have a good eye for self critiquing, fantabulous! so try and every now and again stop and look at what your drawing and be really critical about the proportions of everything.
Thanks~ Yeah, I need to stop thinking about other things when I draw (i.e what hmw I have to finish by tomorrow) to boost concentration and accuracy.

the first self portrait is good(especially the hair) but the eye is too small, the nose isn't really in perspective(looks flat), same could kind of be said for the lips. the neck is a bit thick looking and the adams apple(or female equivalent) is going off the the side. plus like you said, the over all shape of the head isn't quire right.....
Aye, I noticed the eye and overall shape was off. I never really looked into how the adam's apple for females is, so I'll keep an eye out for that next time.

the page of selfportaits are really good, patricianly the two on the right, really interesting perspectives and poses. proportions are pretty damn good on all of these!(eyes on the top left one are kinda in-proportionate)
Thanks!

the two heads are extremely good for no ref, only crit is the.....hair.....container.....thing.....? is not really in any kind of perspective, just kind of randomly placed with no particular weight or anything......
Haha, the hair/head band? Yeah, I thought it looked flat too, but I wanted to go to bed...:^^;:

I'll work into the shadows for the apples sometime today as I'm in college all day tomorrow (9am-6pm plus ~2 hours of travelling, geez...).

the glass at the top is very good, i really like the light in the shadow. i'm not sure, but i think the shadow should curve out more at the top of the shadow.....dose that make sense

the bottom hand seems like it could do with a little more flesh between the thumb and index finger, and the thumb's a bit big
Hehe, yeah, that made sense. I need to do some more detailed hand studies too rather than just drawing rough outlines.

last self portrait, try not to over emphasize the crease between the nose and mouth. the area around the right side of the neck is kind of strange.....
The filtrum? Yeah, I see what you mean.

.......I hate drawing necks. >_<

Cheers for the crit, Kronos, I really appreciate it!

I'll be doing some studies on anatomy when my books arrive (Anatomy For The Artist and The Nude Figure: A Visual Reference for the Artist). The first one should come in by Monday at the very latest - the second takes a couple of weeks.

Here's something I made the other day for my watercolours after spending £11.-something on that big brush, having nowhere to keep it.....until I made this, obviously:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/photos/watercolour_bag.jpg
There are long strips of plastic on the outer borders so I can only fold it to a certain point, thus not ruining that brush before having the chance to use it. >_<

Here's what I sketched on the way to college today. I was going to [try to] sketch the people in the bus [without spewing,] but this nice old lady spotted my sketches and complimented me. =3 As did the old man who sat next to me later on, which was nice~

So she let me sketch her:

http://cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/oldlady.jpg
Would've gone into it more and such but motion sickness got the best of me...her right eye is too small.....damn it was such a bumpy ride. :dead:

Bless, she was so sweet!

Yesterday's sketches (A friend and I hung out in the lecture room until our next class was due.):

http://cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/franpiano_rough.jpg
She was playing Tocotta en Fugue (D minor) so there was no way I could catch her hands properly! Or her arm.

http://cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/franpiano_whole.jpg
With her feet under the piano...o.O
The leg is off, I think the piano is out of perspective (or the wall....dunno) and the front part of the piano looks too long. Too damn lazy to draw all the keys in...

http://cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/thumbnails_lecturetheatre.jpg
Just looking around the lecture theatre (they have music lessons in there too, hence the piano and music stand)

C&C is always welcome.

quicksilver,

the works you got here are really nice, your SPs look gorgeous, maybe you should add some contrast on those, they seem to be very bright, but maybe thats just my screen.
Good stuff. Now post more.

These look pretty promising QS, a tip would be to draw up some guidelines when you are doing objects in perspective, its helps alot when placing stuff in relation to other stuff. Start off with some simple onepoint, and soon enough youll get bored witht that and want to move on with 2 and 3! Also, when doing portraits, there are certain "rules" that you can follow, to facilitate placing eyes, nose and mouth, ears, fx edge of mouth alignes with middle of eye/browbone, nose is as wide as eye, etc etc. It really helps, and after while these rules become reflexes, and then you can start to break and stretch them!
Cheers Tim

Hey there

I hope I'm not being out of line here (apologies in advance, no offence meant :D ) but your pencil work seems a little timid when compared to your wonderfully bold "Apples" painting.

I'd love to see you try using brush and ink to "draw" with, to see if you can get some of that confidence in to your line work :D

Thanks for posting, guys!

Kicek: Nah, that was just me not shading them in. ^_^;

timpaatkins: ...edge of mouth alignes with middle of eye/browbone...
Ahaaaa. Wow do I feel stupid! xD Cheers~

DazWatford: Not at all! :) You have a point there, actually, my lines are fairly timid. I did a character sketch last night and I feel as though my lines were so much more loose. It must be the fear of not getting it exact when working from a ref.

So here it is, my Jester (originally the Dragonfly Jester but I forgot to draw her wings):
http://cheeb.co.uk/gallery/jester.jpg
I drew this to trade to either nicolas or poise in the Trading Pages thread, but I kinda like it myself. It's on watercolour paper so the scanner didn't pick up the lines - I ended up taking a pic of it. Hopefully you can see it okay.

I kinda did this before going to bed, so no ref. I *initially* used a ref, but for a different pose, which I later found too boring for thisenergetic character. :)

Erm....her left arm disappeared. I think her torso is too long but I'm not sure. Some people have log torsos! Heh. :^^;: You can see the initial sketches here (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/myart/dragonflyjester.html)

So......to paint or not to paint?

C&C welcome, as always.

Great work
I defenatly would love to see more painting of you.
For the sketches try to give them more values, don't just use hard lines to define shapes. Now it seems like you sketch with a pen.

jermainevl
January 8th, 2006, 03:15 PM
About the ones made in the lecture room:
You made the correct observations again. The perspective on the piano isn't bad at all in my opinion, or it just isn't disturbing. The feet that dissapear under the piano: I think it's because of lack of 'planning'. By that I mean you should keep in mind what you want to portray in what area. Quickly draw the large shapes and then refine. Sometimes you just forget about it and start drawing and then you end up with those little mistakes, like those feet and the jester's hat cutting off from the top.

About the jester:
I like it a lot! Nice pose and nice lines. Perhaps it's the cropping from photoshop but there are some unhappy accidents with her fingers and the top of the hat. I don't think the torso is too long. You might think that because her boobs are misplaced. As a pervert I have stared at enough tits to be able to recognise that ;) Her right breast (our left) should be moved more to the left. I don't know if you can fix that or not. Perhaps you could pose in the mirror, to see how it should look like (how the sketch should look like, not you :P).

Uziel: Thank you =) What I'd like to do this year is to complete a ('proper') painting per month using the stunning photographs from a calander I recently bought on wild life. I'll post the WIPs here. =)

All of the sketches posted here are by mechanical pencils. I'm fairly light-handed so I have to boost the contrast and such on PS so you guys can actually see them. Yeah, I'll try not to focus so much on the outline when drawing in future. I guess it's become a habit from drawing animated stuff for so many years! It doesn't apply one bit if my hand is holding a paintbrush though~

jermainevl: Oooohh no, no, she actually had her feet underneath the piano, lol. Since it has wheels it's slightly lifted from the ground - I just didn't think the gap would be big enough to fit feet under. It was just a general comment. ^_^; Sorry about the confusion.
Thank you though. Yeah, I'm pretty bad at planning these things. A3's a bit big to carry around, so I bought this new sketchbook (35.5x28cm) with a leather cover so it should be pretty durable. I don't want to waste it with just random sketches though so I'll wait for that book to arrive (It's late, gggrrrrr!!) to make studies/notes from.

Lol, so that was it. Cheers for pointing that out! :) I'll go over it in a sec.

I've been working on my Art and Graphics projects lately so there's only one rough sketch to show. Finally got some feedback from my tutor, and she said I'm too much of a perfectionist, lol. And that I write too much/go way too indepth when analysing/evaluating my work

Anyhoo, here's what I scribbled in tutorial today:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/myart/jesterrough.jpg
The anatomy is CRAP. I just wanted to try out a different expression for a change. Even that isn't as 'smirky' as initially intended.

Thanks so much for the comments, everyone. :D Feel free to post more~

ps/ keeping a regular SB is now the harder aspect. lol

Kian
January 18th, 2006, 06:47 PM
Ah, I found your SB. The main thing I'd advise is keeping the block-in lines way lighter. So when you really put down the value of a strong line, the construction will almost dissapear. Keeping ontop of values is hard as hell for me, so we're in the same boat :)

Hehe, thanks, Fran. ^_^ Hey, we have that 1 1/2 break after Printing tomorrow.

Here's what I drew earlier:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/myart/hair_biro.jpg
It's a bit sloppier than my usual biro sketches, but I did have to balance a webcam whilst sitting crosslegged, lol. It doesn't matter anyhoo. 'Hope it helped, guys~
[cough]I started to do my own thing with the hair[cough]

Drawn in biro:
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/bus00.jpg

Dossing about in Art:
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/andy.jpg
Erm, the anatomy is a bit wacky, and even though it's like a characature(sp?) it's probably still out of proportion. Also in biro.

Attempt of drawing a girl from a shoe shop:
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/shoegirl00.jpg
I drew this one whilst waiting for the train, so it was all from memory.

Soz, but there's nothing to show that's polished. Yes, the "I've no time!" excuse creeps up here but I'll try and draw more during breaks and such. Sooooo much homework to finish off yet......;__;

koshime: As for updating this regularly, that depends on whether I remember to/can be arsed to scan them, hehe. :P

kian: Yeah, I have a bad habit of going crazy with the guidelines! I'll try to tone down a bit, hehe.

C&C is always welcome.

hey quicksilver,

wow, i really like the jester on the watercolor paper! i'd love to see you do something more with that drawing (or even the character).....

self portrait: ooooh, the hair is awesome! some of the rendering on the face seems a little too "feathery" try get a more confident hatching or cross hatching going on, however i'm no expert on that, and could be wrong, but something doesn't look as nice as it could. also, she could do with a tiny bit more mass on the top of her head (eyes seem just a little bit too high.....)

i think if the caricature had some more interesting curves, the proportions might somehow work better...... sounds weird i hope you know what i mean?

there are several things bugging me about the last one, but i can't quite put my finger on them.... i think the heavy thick line around the face kind of ruins it.....

overall though, some really nice stuff ( jester especially!!! )
keep at it

Quicksilver
January 19th, 2006, 04:48 PM
Kronos: Thank you! Yeah, I'll erase some of the outline on the girl's face the next time I work into it, lol. As for the hatching and such...I been feeling really weird - almost empty - when working with a pencil lately. I might switch to biro for a while and see how that goes...

I really like my jester, so I'll definately have to do a full coloured pic of her sometime. :) Thanks!

K, here's something I started&finished last night (or morning....3:30am)
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/nakamayukie.jpg
Brown card, dry sepia set (pastels, charcoal pencils etc.)
It could do with some darker shading but I don't have a brown dark enough and I'm afraid using too much black will screw it up....

Something I drew earlier:

Any ideas on what I could draw for the rest of her head???

Ryn
January 22nd, 2006, 06:03 PM
Hey, good to see another girl on here! You've got some nice stuff.

Your studies of hair are just great - but that doesn't always seem to be the case on your self portraits. On your self portraits the hair seems too linear (though this is only terribly evident on your first batch).

Try looking for highlights and shadows more. I find the best way to find shadows/highlights on hair is to cross your eyes - it makes you direct your focus from individual strands to the blocked out forms.

If your hair is really well taken care of, there probably isn't a whole lot of complexity to the lighting on it. Since that seems like it might be the case, it'll be relatively little work and result in a much more bold picture.

Hope that helps. I'll keep an eye on your sketchbook, it's a good motivator. Goodluck!

koshime

its good to see the regular updates and progress.
I quite like the brown card/sepia illustration.
overall - good composition that could be further improved with slighty more contrast (probably hard on natural media) but easy with a click of a photoshop brush stroke!

An introduction of a suggestion of shadow/contrast between clavicles and breastbones perhaps? Keep up your good efforts!

lefran

Ryn: Thanks! Yeah, probably because those were the first drawings I'd done in about a year(?), so there was some catching up to do. That, and for whatever reason I just couldn't be bothered to go into them all that much. ^_^; Probably because they were of myself, haha.

koshime: Aye, I don't have a pastel dark enough, which is a bum, and black would be too strong to use.
An introduction of a suggestion of shadow/contrast between clavicles and breastbones perhaps?
I actually know what those are now! Yeah, if I can get the time to go back to it then I will. There's soooo much to catch up on in college...(it's my fault really for browsing the forums too much!) Thank you :)

lefran: Hmm, still dunno what to do with her head... Cheers~

Procrastinating like hell (should've been doing hmw). No ref. because I was too lazy to search for some...

Kinda developing that character from before. I don't like the turban-looking thing on her head and her nose is too long. I used a ref of a model from Glamour magazine for this. I think her head's too big too.

You're off to a good start with your sketchbook..The main thing I think most people have touched upon too, is value and contrast, that would probably be something to begin adding/learning when sketching, even if its just simple and quick for some...

I like some of your costume design, especially the jester woman...theres anatomy issues sure, but if you keep up the studies etc, then you will see improvement in that area in no time..

Nice update too, but, stick a piece of piece of paper underneath if you run out of room, and continue drawing on that... then it wont look squashed..

hey Quicksilver, nice to see your doing life drawing! it helps SSOOOOOO, damn much!!!! take them whenever you can find them, i haven't done one in over three months :xpld:

i have to say, the first three studies are probably the best.... the anatomy seems a bit wonky on the first 30 min one, but you got the lighting quite nicely on the on after that :). the final one is nice, although it would have been nice to see you work up the face aswell, that would really finish it off....

anywayz, just keep em' coming! these classes will be really REALLY good, hope you enjoy them ;D

Myo~

Oooookay, it's been a lil' while since I last updated (due to being too lazy to scan stuff).

Went to meet a bunch of fellow CAer's on Thursday - it was awesome! It was inspirational just looking at other people's SBs in the flesh and chatting to them. Will defo have to do it again sometime. :)

Hi Quicksilver, it was good to meet you.

I think of the latest batch, the pic of Fran's by far the best (clean, confident lines), although the characters in general are looking pretty good!

Your drawing's coming on, but your shading isn't really giving figures a lot of depth right now. Push the darks a bit further, and the image'll pop more.

btw, is one of those guys me, 3rd pic from the top of the last lot?

Keep it up,

Mid: Cheers~ It was cool meeting you ^_^ Might see you in the Bristol meet if I can make (and afford) it.
Yeah, I really need to go back to my old ways and spend time shading things in properly. It's just that I'm getting really, really fed up with the pencil atm, and I think I'm overusing pastels just as much. =/ Any suggestions as to what other media I could use?
...btw, is one of those guys me, 3rd pic from the top of the last lot?...
Hehe, yeah. ^__^ Kinda drew your arm too short though. Soz 'bout that xD

seba_boi: Thank you =3 I like that pic too~
Hehe, yeah, should get into the habit of colouring my pics. Just that I get bored super easily. >.< Will try and get into digi painting again though.

I see a lot of progress as I scroll down this page. How exciting!

I personally would love to see your jester sketch painted, I liked it very much. Expressive. I am also a sucker for painted fruit, and as such, enjoyed your apple study. ; )

I believe it was the back of "Fran's" head that I thought you did a nice job with the hair. You seem very open to critique and personally advancing yourself and I really admire that, it's a wonderful trait! Probably the most important one an artist can have.

Keep practicing your proportions and anatamy, it's only gotten better. There are some real gems here. Your "dancer" sketch comes to mind. ; )

Anyway, thanks for visiting my sketch book, I hope to continue to see you and your work around.

hey nice updates, especially the ones with the markers and brush pens.....

keep going with those other mediums, digital too

heres a really quick critique of the jester wip, the eyes aren't level and i think her right side of her face is a bit too wide, also her head might stop a bit abruptly at e top of her head (didn't really describe that very well)...also, some darker values to make it feel a little less flat

so, here is a very minor/quick paint over (probably overdid the darker tones just to let you know what i mean)

Nice updates! One thing I've noticed on quite a few of your characters and life drawings (in particular the one of your brother) is that you dont seem to draw the whole head. It looks like you draw up to where the hair is then start drawing the hair.. It makes it look like the head is a bit squashed. I would draw the whole head first.

I like the hair studies. @_@; I seriously can't draw hair. Althought you should work on the contrast.

On the color works, You really need to work on the the contrast between light and dark. =/ If you look closely the skin is NOT just peach or brown. It has different colors boucing off the skin.... red, purples, greens, blue. Use Cold colors to null out the warm color to create shadows

JeroArt: Thank you! Yeah, brown paper rawks =3 Was meant to stick it in my art assignment but I can't fit it in...

Immortal: Lol, I'll tell him that. ^_^ Cheers for the comment - I'll try and get back to my old ways and actually spend time shading and such.

Sean: Cheers~ And awesome, paints are really enjoyable to use, though (as I learnt a couple of days ago) oils are a pain in the arse to clean up after - not to mention the smell of turps...

SillyLing: Thanks for the C&C - yeah, I need to step back and start rendering my sketches properly. Just that I've been trying to loosen up from the ol' perfectionist days in hope that I'd produce more work and generally have more fun with it. Will defo take the comment on the cold tones next time, just not with markers (they're pricey, I'm broke and I've pretty much every other media under the sun in my bedroom/computer room besides clay).

Here's something I drew today using a 0.1 fineliner on my SB paper tinted with a wet teabag! xD

http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/myart/treething_unfinished.jpg
The initial thought was to draw a natural sculpture of a harp/fox, but then I felt like drawing some roots so I did, then just took it from there. Need to think of a way to disguise the hook-looking bit at the top - I still want the shape, not not the outline.

Anyhoo, thank you for your thoughts :) Feel free to add more~

Hi Naomi,

a quick word in your ear about colour. Years ago I read a sort of 'how to' book by Patrick Woodruffe, in which he gave some advice which in theory seemed counterintuitive, but worked a treat in practice. He suggested using green as an undertone, especially for fairer skin. The reds, roses, and blues of subsequent layers compliment the faint green beneath. It's not a solution for every situation, but I've found it works for me from time to time.

Also, one of the most, if not the only valuable thing I picked up from colege is to expect the unexpected when analysing a great artist's palette. A great example of this is the Dutch 17th century master Frans Hals. This guy knew a thing or two about colour theory. His flesh tones are so varied, the brushstrokes so bold, god, I love this guy. ;)

Here's a few links to some of my favourites of his. The other day, I heard that the sitter in the first one was stoned at the time. Does it show?

Anyway, that's enough dry sermonising from me

cheers chicken

...using green as an undertone, especially for fairer skin. The reds, roses, and blues of subsequent layers compliment the faint green beneath...
....That's a really good point. Why didn't I think of that? o_o When I went through a phase of being into interior design (considered it as a career at one point) I learnt a bit about complimentary and uniform colours, etc. Still, no one believes me when I say red and green (reminds people too much of Christmas) and blue and orange go well together.

So when painting fairer skin, should I paint in green (I'm picturing a pale, pasteley green?), let it dry, then add on the rest afterwards?
Was gonna save this for when it was completed but here's something I painted using acrylics:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/myart/class_wip.jpg (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/myart/class_wip(fullres).jpg) <----click for high res. version
Is the skintone okay?

And those paintings by Hals are wonderful - I really like how he's captured, what seems like a meer couple of seconds, of raw emotion, as though from a photograph. They're a lot more 'real' and expressive than standard 'posing for a picture' paintings. And yeah, the first guy looks a bit out of it, lol, if not a bit weary! Thanks for sharing :)

...PS: that plums still life is wicked.
Cheers! Although they're apples! xD Yeah, they do look like plums because of their deep, rich colour, but they're American apples and the taste certainly wasn't rewarding. :( Here's a pic:

Ha hi, quicky:) Just looking at your art, and I can say out of my expierence that if you stick to your lines as accurate as possible when colouring underneath then you'll achieve a crispier look.

Ive drawn over your pic if i may to show you how i work most of the time. Also it comes down to your knowledge of the colourwheel and Complementary colours, knowing this is a must.

Adobe PS6
Before i start to colour my lineart I make the white transparency with this technic I got of a tutorial(DEAD EASY to find). I didnt do it on your picture, i just drew over the black lines again that got coloured over abit:)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y228/christianfell/jesterface_wip2.jpg

1. Set a grey layer underneath. This helps me to locate the light source better, due to the extra contrast effect.

2. Then I set my brush's opacity on like 20% for starters and paint the light catching areas out only with your already chosen base colour.

3. The lighter the area is the more opacity you can paint on. It's up to you how you do it, You can either change you opacity to 60% or draw three times 20% over the same spot... I have my opacity low to produce a better flow of gradient.

4. At the end I slap my opacity on 100% and give endges some real saturation. This is the bit what makes your picture standout with that extra crisp!

V. for very importand
Dont forget to add Shadow. I used(Dark Complementary/black) darkblue and opacity 7% to give the picture more contrast and depth.

I hope that has helped a wee bit, take care mate!

jaykizi: Lol, thanks, man! Yeah, I've only been to 4 life drawing sessions so far. So far the pattern's been like this:
session #1: Good
session #2: Crap
session #3: Good
session #4: Crap
SO theoretically, the next one should turn out good. Yes, I'll go with that. :) And I call them sessions instead of classes because they're not really classes - they supply us with a model and we draw, basically. We don't do 1 minute exercises or whatever you guys apparently do <---has no idea.

damdischink: Aye, I still need to finish that for Art. I'll post the final thing when it's done. :)

Hey naomi, I'm glad you think my sp looks like me, that was the idea ;)

Some of your more recent life drawings have had some really nice expressive lines. I rekon you could do some great gesture studies. It would help with random poses and also proportion to some degree.

For the speedpainting the brushes you've used look like they're set at a low opacity. For some things you might need to, but especially for the characters a more solid brush would have helped give them more form. You could have given that guy a hand too! :)

Hey Naomi

Nice bust! I mean torso!

Like I said, I've commented on so much of this in person or on MSN, I didn't realise I'd never posted in your sb. Sorry hehe

As I've said, your abilities with cloth and hair will really help you in the future. Getting materials right is hard, and something I'm pretty shit with. You're doing life drawing at the same time, so you're not leaving much out, which is great. Your portraits (particularly SPs) really stand out as great work though.

Really like that bizarre tree too - definite mood going on there.

With the life drawing, the hard marks in the background are a bit distracting. The value's probably a lttle too dark, but more importantly, the lines are too sharp. If you smudged that back with the palm of your hand, the high contrast in the gaps between lines and paper wouldn't draw the eye to them so much. We need to be focussing on the figure, and those are kinda taking away from it just now.

Anyway, keep it up kiddo :P

Speedpaint (50 mins?) – I liked it when it was still sketchy, but my mum came in to see me work so I started talking and explaining, which lead to me using the wrong colour for the highlights. >_< So I had to layer on paints a bit more thickly to hide it. Not that I’m blaming mum; I’m just crap at working whilst talking sometimes.

yes.so you're evidently getting better. hooray. infact one of my favourites is the very last one you've done, because you can tell already that's its solid etc. i dont actually remember seeing much of this in your sb at the meet. i must be blind ó_o

Sean: Thanks! Haha, yeah, it was all there when you saw it last week :P

s.s.nails: Thank you~ Yeah, I definitely agree with ya there, though it applies with everything - nothing can't be improved. :)

Okay, here's something from the last life drawing session:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/ld12.jpg
White chalk on black card
This was the last but one piece I did (haven't posted the others because this was the only one I could find. My room is such a tip...). I'm not too sure how it is, anatomy-wise, but I'm pretty happy with it. The face could do with some more working into but if I remember correctly, my arse was getting seriously numb whilst drawing this, lol (yes, I'm sure you wanted to know that :P).

Studies for Art:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/dancestudies02.jpg
Fineliner (0.1), brush pen and soft pencils (3B, 7B)
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/dancestudies01.jpg
Fineliners (o.1, 0.3), Promarker (steel grey)
You can ignore the written babble, hehe.
NOTE: These weren't drawn in order. The one with markers was the first sketch, then the one in pencil, then lastly, the one with brush pen.
In the last CA meet, Kim (sketchling) suggested starting with the torso when drawing figures. Naturally, I thought, "Weh??", but then he explained how it's the core of the figure and that its position decides where and how the other limbs are placed. And y'know what? He was right! I think I busted out these sketches way faster than I would've done if I started with the head (as usual) and my lines became more structured.

My WIP for the TD so far:
http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/td/girlstd03.jpg
Might do the rest on PS as it's faster but I don't know yet. I still need to alter the foot and make the calf a bit bigger so it lines up with the bottom. As for the hair, I'm thinking of something along thelines of this (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/td/girlstd02_bob2.jpg). Please let me know what you think~ :)

Crit away, m'dears~ :cheerleader:

Hey Quicksilver-

Youve got some pretty nice stuff up in here too! I like the values and form in thisone: http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/ld10.jpg
One of your nicest work I think...

You tend to render in a rather messy way. The values are hard to recognize and its too smudgy-when you draw with charcoal.
I also enjoy your brush-pen works and the drawings of your "waistcoat-ish jacket" :D

The TD-WIP is looking interesting at this point... Really curious where youre gonna take that. You should check on the chin, cheeks and her right leg.. Right now they look a bit awkward.

Anyways- keep em coming like that, progress is def. visible!

Yeah, definately. I think it's because I like things to look smooth and consistant, and forget that doesn't always work!

Er, forgot to work on the chin but it's a bit late now anyway. Here's my entry for the All Female TD (it's over now - congrats to the top 11 girls!)

these (http://www.sweetsunset.co.uk/gallery/bw.jpg) are really good for seeing form.
Nice TD entry btw, dunno if i said.
Keep up the studies.
When working in tone or colour remember it's all relative, so give the background a colour or some middle tone, especially important on computer cause the white is so blazing. This will help show you tonal range, things don't exist on a stark white background very much.
Keep on going.

In a lot of SBs I rumage through, I see a preponderance of tight linework, or solid form in a given artist's work. It's great to see artists who embrace both, and are yet to settle on one of the disciplines. Your lines are, for the most part going in the right direction. There's loads of confidence there. It's great to see that colour and tonality aren't an afterthought for you, and that you're tackling this aspect of the craft too.

I lose count of the ammount of sketchbooks of young hopefulls, who just tinker on the outskirts of colour and form. You don't seem to be making this mistake.

Aww, thank you, man. I know you were drunk, but that's still sweet :bashful: Cheers for the uplift, Pete! [hugs]

Dan: Hehe, thanks. Nah, your beer was drawn separately - it's not meant to be in perspective. Didn't realise it looked like it might have been intended until I got home so I drew a thick outline around it to (hopefully) take it away from the other sketch.

glynn james: Thanks~ Yeah, defo. I haven't been drawing much 'cause I've been feeling a bit fed up, but after switching to a new and bigger SB I've felt so much better! :D It's like being purged from seeing old, depressing work, hehe.

AAA: Thanks :D Cheers for stopping by.

Uziel: Hehe, my sis is a fashion student. I guess it would be cool to have my designs made, and I almost had a part of a clothing line goin' on but I don't know what's happened to that now. [shrugs] Good point about the cleaning up my lines. Is the latest character design okay?

Fran: Chers, dahrl.

Jon: Moowaahahahaha! Yeah, I'm trying to go digital but my laptop doesn't seem to like it. Git. I miss my compy. :( Good point about the skull studies. Still gotta do those :nohope:

Steel Buddha: Cheers, man. Really? I feel honoured to have inspired you. :3 About the lighting....when not working from ref I tend to draw a little circle indicating where the light source is and an arrow (V point) pointing where it's directed at (spotlight/rays/360º). Sometimes I draw arrows to show movement (black points) or wind (white/blank points) direction too. Hope that helped somewhat.
Note: The 'points', for me, means the head of the arrow - just so I know which one's which.

Riiiiiiiight, here's my piddley update and yes, I am ashamed, but what the heck, I have a bigger SB now so I can fit my characters in. Whoop!

http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/char02.jpg
Fineliner, grey pro markers
I bought a lil A5 notebook which I was going to use for my next SB but decided not to use it 'cause it would be even more restricting. Think I'll use it for doodles/rough layout plans or something instead.
Kept the sketch really loose 'cause I wanted to find out how the paper took markers since they're a bit of a moo to certain types of paper. Didn't really think of the character herself but I quite like the costume design.

http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/doodlepage.jpg
Fineliners (0.1, 0.3), grey pro markers
Tried to do some thumbnail enviros but got a bit lost as to wtf was going on in them, so they're unfinished. To make up for that I jazzed up the bg with shapes. My latest sketch! Drew this one last night without reference to see how far I could go. Gutted her head went off the page but I can easily draw it in on PS - gonna give a bit of a graphic backdrop with either bold, solid colours or leave it black and white with touches of colour.
Her back needs to go out a bit more on the left as her torso's a bit of a weird shape atm. Also need to define the tattoo on her shoulder/arm/chest.

the variety of media that you use is mind boggling. I have such a fear of anything that isn't pencil, so to see someone so good with so many different tools is inspiring to me. Your character outfit costumes are fantastic too. You've got a few proportion issues here and there, like in your last character's right arm, I think the upper arm is a bit too long and the lower arm a bit too short. But everything looks fantastic.

On the way from coming back from college I sat down on one of the benches outside some construction works (they're building a new shopping centre) and drew one of their trucks. Was gonna draw a JCB too but it kept moving, hehe. And yah, got some weird looks from teh builders but they were polite and got on with their work. :) I left early though 'cause it looked like they needed to use the truck, which is why the back of it isn't completed. Doubt it's very clear but I've drawn rough circles to show coins falling from the side/top. The truck's driving on a ranbow and is carrying pots of gold and notes.
I think this would be nice as a graphic design.

Woo, storytime. Well, kinda. When it's sunny outside I sometimes pop into town after it's closed to sketch the surroundings. After whipping out the ol' SB and drawing a mere 3 lines (of the top sketch) I was encountered by a young man asking if I could draw his friend's portrait. I said "Yeah, k", and started a new page.
With the sun blinding both of us accompanied by some rap music playing from his phone, I eventually finished a pencil sketch of the dude and neatly tore out the page. And got £8 in return. o.O
So yah, my first paid portrait sketch, hehe. :) Obviously I don't have it to scan in so there's nothing to show, but I thought I'd share anyway. :)

Hey Naomi.

The fineliner ones are the strongest in there, I reckon. Definitely showing attention to detail. I'd love to see a more finished one of the cathedral and others like it.

And yes, people often say stuff to me - though I'm kinda shy (yes, really) and kinda avoid it. Kim, as I think you know, revels in it haha

God damn that's a lot of work in the baby picture. May as well have been stippling!!

You're coming along really well - now get back to putting in the hours :D

Thanks a lot for the support over the past couple days - I owe you big style xxx

Naomi, I beg you to carry on with the church!!!! I can see it being incredible.
With the baby pic, is the best rendering ove seen you do. The value range is top. I'd suggest paying ultra close attention to the pupils, they are the essence of the eye, obviously. But thats a great pic. Soon you'll be running a bloody portrait business :D

Hi Naomi!

Great to see an update from you -stuff seems to be really coming along nicely!

watercolour looks quite nice, could have probably pushed the values a bit, the atomsphere is kinda coming of as a bit washy, I think the rough border coupled with that blue above is killing the colours in the sky, i would probably mask it off or crop it, I think it would give more punch, also giraffe anatomy may be a little funky around the neck \ shoulders.

http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/page.jpg this page looks really nice, gotta love dem postermans hehe
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/town.jpg this page is also especially nice, I really like the observation, and the line work looks great too.
http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/castle.jpg - this is wonderful! It came out really nicely, great confident lines, is it on toned paper or is that some photoshop trickery? heh
Birdy hand arm pic looks really nice and the baby portrait.. wowza there is a lot of work gone into that. The rendering is impecable as all your biro stuff seems to be, feature placement may seem a little bit off, but i can't really look at it too long as its scary, nothing against your pic, its just babies agg. heeh
Great stuff all round Naomi i can definatley see improvement and i love your fineliner stuff especially.

Hopefully see you at next meet, I wanna see more mixed media experimentation, pirate skulls and mitten bops!

cheers,

Hello Naomi! Long time since i've been here..

Last update is really good. I think jon has a point about you finishing the church.. Do it! :) I like the detail you got into the newport thumbnails without them reading badly.. They remind of of something as well, like a comicstrip or random book that I read when I was young..can't remember right now though.

yarr.. really like the giraffe one. lovely atmosphere.. the baby thing is just kickass.. do you have a ref photo? because it just looks a bit too... fake, as in, plastic... i'd expect more form given to a baby's face.. and the eyes are wayy big and shiny. i know kids are like that.. but it feels like some undue emphasis was put here..

man...i really could do with your patience. update soon x

Hey Naomi! Loving the church...Majorly! Also, how fucking awesome is that skull!!! Well done on that, I'm impressed.
About tightening up and/or loosening up. My personal opinion, (which will enlighten you as to why the way I am/was), is that once I've meticulously finished an image way more than I should have. Its ten times easier to do it loose, and stylised/gestural, as I can simplify in my head, what makes what look realistic and how i can get it soo loose. Most of the time my process is soo anal, because of this exact reason. I believe I understand environment design fair enough now, that I can start developing a "style". All other areas will take alot of study for me. But thats the key word: study

Remember, this is just my opinion, if you feel loosening/tightening will make a decent improvement on your art, do it! This is your decision alone though!! Developing your process for you, is what makes your art...yours. I hope I've made some teeeny bit of sense.

Riiiiighto, I started Art Foundation today with a life drawing class. Here's what I churned up in the second half of the lesson by painting with a twig. o.O

I start drawing figures with the torso, and always misjudge the space needed for the head, d'oh.

as for the water colour, i think you could perhaps work a bit more loosely, maybe approach it differntly , you could try using more water for a different effect? the colours are looking really nice though. as for the face, if you look at each individual feature theyre good, i think maybe you concentrated on each feature as you drew it, and thats why they look a bit odd when put together, wonderful hair as usual :) the pencil study is really nice, as for the points you made, i can only tell that the nose is a little bit too long, the rest looks good as far as i can tell :) the char is also looking good :)

hello Stranger :)

That last one of Fran's head on your body is really really good. I wouldn't worrry about the dimensions at all, nothing looks wrong.

I really like the twig painting with the side of the stick. There's always something liberating about working in a mode where you don't care so much cause you feel limited anyway. (see rule number two hehe)

The watercolours aren't trying too hard at all! I like the variety of colours in there a lot.

make sure you actually use the anatomy knowledge you gain on your sketches... on some sketches the anatomy is very good, but on others it looks like you were too lazy to plan it all out right first, and went straight to the rendering! You have a lot of variety and you always try to come back to each thing in its turn. I see lots of improvement. Here's my offering in the hopes it helps. I liked the brown paper sepia thing, as did others. The talk of values and a darker brown made me think of Conte crayons in the color "Bistre" not so much because it is darker per se, but because it is a cooler brown than sepia and also conte crayons are harder than pastels. You can push down hard without breaking them and thus make really dark marks. I know you don't push down hard very much anyway, but if you had one of these crayons it may help you make a deeper cooler brown in mixed media things.

Of course, now that you are doing more digital you can make a wide range of lights and darks anyway so this may be moot. Best of luck.

hey!

been a while....too long a while....

awesome updates, although we do need a new one NOW!!! (the most hypocritical statement in history) those hand and feet studies are really really nice, its amazing how much emotion can be conveyed through a simple hand gesture.

sorry if someone already said this but the babies right eye is too low. i moved it up here
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a173/stupidsoup/baby.jpg
aside from that though it looks awesome, very nicely rendered...one other thing i could say if i were being super uber critical is that the facial features (lips in particular) all kind of stand out as individual features rather then a whole face. like i say thats getting pretty specific and i wouldn't have a friggin clue how you can improve on that, but yeah..... :S

awesome, more updates!

hey quicksilver- havent been around for awhile.. The lifedrawings from after work when people asked you questions.. look very nice and i really like the messy lifedrawings!

You do experiment a lot already- but i have to tell you- especially because you're such a traditional person- that you should try out different types of paper and experiment with the softness of your pencils because a lot of times your drawings seem a little too dirty (to me at least...) dirty meaning that smudgy soft look where you can see the texture of the paper and it looks sort of.. out of control- i really dont mean to sound harsh thats just what i find in your drawings pretty often.

thats all for now though ;P

3-5 minute hand sketches. Actually tried keeping my hand in those positions whilst drawing, which might explain why it gets looser and looser from left to right. :) Used a charcoal pencil (they're great).

More hand studies in between classes.

http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/sb06.jpg
These were done after the last speedpaint I posted (dude with big glasses in b&w acrylics). I squeezes out too much black paint so I used the rest up on these two pages. Went a bit wild and didn't really give a rat's arse about proportions and accuracy, tbh. Felt good to get that out of my system.

www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/sb07.jpg
Left-right: doodles of two guys who were standing in front of me at the bus stop, a mini doodle of what I was gonna make in Fashion, some sort of monster, and a lil chibi SP of me for the all girls pin-up calendar (mine is #19). :)

http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/sb08.jpg
Had something graphicy in mind and drew it out straight away. I think this would look nice as a vector with a strong, purple background and pink/yellow/green swirls/flowers/whatev, and the girl would have fair, peachy skin and blonde hair.
No ref - just wanted to get an idea down hastely.

RAAAAWWG, T-REXUSSNESS! Was really enjoying drawing this, then a crowd of people decided to mingle about in front of it for ages so I got fed up and wondered about for a bit. Buu.
Should've explored more, really - I totally missed the extra rooms with the skulls and gorillas?? And apparently there's a room with tools/weapons or something. Damnnit!

Anyways, that last post was too huge to crit precisely, you're having issues drawing some of the hands, but you're obviously working at it so keep going.

sweet update!

i suppose getting your stuff confiscated by the police over a murder investigation is an okayish excuse.... but only ok....

but wow just think of all the drawing you'd get done if you went to prison!!!!

really nice boot! i think the charcoal and the coloured paper go really nicely together, and the boot is really nice and loose, although it would have been nice if you didn't use quite so many sketchy lines around the outline.

this stuff is cool, awesome costume and confident use of lines

Dan: Cheers, don't be silly and will do :)
Dan#2: Thanks! We'll have to catch up sometime - haven't spoken in a while.

Rich: Cheers! Yeah, I like those two sketches too. They're on my site now :) Yay for brown paper~
Marco: Haha, yeah yeah.....scanning is terribly boring and tedious, okay? >_<;
Christian#2: Aww, thank you :bashful: You've made me happy :3 I've some more fineliner stuff to show but I wanna finish off the one sketch before scanning them in yet. Soon, dear, soon...
Kronos: Heeeey~! What? "only ok"?? :P
but wow just think of all the drawing you'd get done if you went to prison!!!! Lol! Yeah, I suppose, but then I'd have no scanner/internet access to show here ;P
True about the boot - I completely cocked up the structure of it then tried to hide it by giving it a wider outline. Didn't work, huh? ^_^; Ah well.
Thank yoouu and hope to see you around! Do you have MSN? PM me if ya do

That jester's looking alright atm, not sure what kind of mood\finish you're going for. I'd just watch the weight of her hips, and her centre of balance (which is tipped far enough out that she'll have to drop the raised leg to balance, or fall).

Nice hands, btw!

Your character work is really strong, maybe concentrate on forms a bit more and I'd have to agree just spend as long as you need on each piece you are tending to leave a lot of stuff unfinished. Quality not quantity n all that, you'll learn more from one 2 hour study than 4 30minute ones.

Scarily good as ever, dont graduate too soon ^_^

Magical Fran: Fankoo :D The cat, Myo, is meant to be somewhat human-like (in mannarisms, at least. She's basically a fraction of my personality in a physical form).
Haven't really worked on the dramaid since - keep getting brush lag and it's really annoying. :S

bunny: Thank you! Yeah, I agree on the feet - really need ref for those. As for the eyes, I quite like them as they are - slightly stylised. The sketch itself honestly looks better in real life (blue pencil doesn't scan too well).

hey cool updates, i like the last one especially, cool variety in line thickness.

umm, i'll give you the generic digital painting advise that you have probably heard hundreds of times before. When you are painting, never use pure white or black as a base background as it will mess with the way you perceive colours, either start with a colour that is close to how it will look like in the end or just choose a mid grey. When you are painting try and use the biggest brush you can handle, it may feel uncomfortable and uncoordinated at first, but it will speed you up heaps and stop you from getting into details too quick. a general rule is to try use hard edge brushes most of the time as soft edge brushes tent to look very amateur most of the time, but they most definitely have their uses, they are really good for blending on low opacity. this one isn't so much advise but a description of the brush i use. get the default hard edge round brush set opacity to pressure sensitivity (flow too if you want), i like to make the minimum diameter about 50% but you can change that depending on how you want to use the brush. i almost always have opacity to 100% and let the pressure sensitivity control that, when i'm drawing i have flow at 100% but when i paint, i usually set flow to about 60%. also [ and ] make the brush size smaller and bigger, and shift+[ and ] make the brush softer hand harder. ONE more thing, if you want to add warmth or cool certain areas down its really easy if you create a new layer and set it to overlay of soft light and just add in warm colours or cool colours. its simple but i found that technique very useful.

Here are the first two pages of the comic I've been working on. Totally underestimated the time is takes to complete one of these things, but hopefully it'll be done in time...

....'cause I've got an interview next week! Eep...

Sooo any tips, suggestions, advice or general comments (you know the deal) on comics or interviews would be much help.

Thanks for lookin', dearys! ^_^

~~Naomi

Note: One of my tutors said my drawing style is quite flowey and 'organic', so he suggested using a different layout for the comic which emulates this.
As a result, I went for a no-panel, 2-page spread layout where the pages would be landscape to achieve a panorama-type effect. Hope it works! Let me know if it doesn't, haha.
Rhyming isn't great on the far left of the second page in particular. Might change that if I'm really pickey...

Looks good Naomi!

My main crit would be on the last 'panel', the back of the seat and figure see to be skewed and out of perspective, also the one before, the desk is very empty, and it contradicts the scenes before where we see a desk with stuff on it!

More updates! Your pen work and brush stuff is lovely!

Badger

Good comic mi lovely. I've gotta agree with aph on perspective here. If you bend perspective around then do that (aka Lorenzo) but if you are going for very refined stuff you need to work out some basic planes. Bring the figure up a bit, and we should see a leg or two on one side.
WOrking hard tho!

blog: Cheers, and np :)

Hurri: Hey man, cheers for stopping by! And for the compliment, thank you ^_^

Badgerydoodah: Thankoos~ Yeah, I dug up my SB a day or two ago and remembered about that piece....did start painting it a bit but lost interest :S Think it's one of those things I'll have to dabble through. Buuuuuuut! I have started to design my piratey self, at long last, haha. Look down...

Tomato: Heya, cheers for poppin' by, mate. Haven't looked at your SB in quite a while actually; I hope you're workin' hard!! :P

DragonSnail: Thank you~ Yeah, I like the jesters too :) Am thinking about making a maquette of one of them, but that's if time and money provides, hahaha. Thanks for takin' your time to comment in my SB, I'll be sure to return the favour :)

I've a thread in the FF section:
Monkey King (sculpture) (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=99056) <---click

Just a speedpaint for now. It's been ages since I've done anything like this, and I defo need to work on my brush strokes (need a lot more confidence)...anyhoo, it's a back view of a new character in development.

C&C always welcome. Cheers for you time and have a nice day! :D

PS: I don't have acess to the internet! Think my bro downloaded too much so our connection's on hold - dunno how long for though. I'm in college atm, but I'll try and update with more stuff when I can.

WARHEAD: Hey, honey :3 Thankoo~ xxx

I'VE FINISHED COLLEGE!!! AND GOT A DISTINCTION! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!! So I've been gaming for the past few days solid and hardly got any drawing done, heh, but managed to scribble these before heading back to play FFXII.....

1.) Initial sketch of my piratey self (later painted, as you can see above). This derived from something of an in-joke-type-story between Badger, Lefran (ish) and I.

2.) Was on 'duty' to guard my classroom with a friend to make sure nobody came in and wrecked our work (our Final Major Projects were on display). I drew a miniture garden chair which was included in one of my classmate's displays whilst llistening to lectures from www.ted.com.

3, 4, 5 & 6.) Some character scribbles with my favourite brush pen~ <3 5's my fav, though it progressively became shitty further down the image so I stopped. Think I lost the vibe a few hours later when I drew number 6. I blame that sodding Esper in Zertinan Caverns which I didn't expect to bump into and DIED. :nohope: Aaanyway.....

7.) Speedpaintish sketches. I really need to stop drawing girls with the same/similar hairstyles as me....or rather, not use myself as reference so much, maybe. o_O Though I wish I had legs like that, hahaha.

Cheers for looking! Hope it wasn't too much of a waste ^_^; C&C welcome~

Nice stuff! Cool exploration of media. The rendering on the chair from the last post make it look a bit flat in areas maybe follow the form a bit more. The oil pastel leaves look great.

(The ted lectures are great)

You fell short .. :(…compared to some other ppl on here…I mean some ppl on hear are WOW they really make one feel short on skills but ok…I will try to improve ….I guess …
p.s the only thing I thought was cool was this sketch of some hair you had at the begining of the your sketchbook link

Sorry naomi i know you can stand up for yourself but Iceman478- firstly Quicksilver is a she, level number is not indicative of skill level btw, also its not general practice come to someones sketchbook in an attempt to belittle their work. Its not about comparing peoples work. theres such a thing as constructive criticism, bet then theres the pointless criticism just for the sake of criticising, just because maybe you dont like naomis work so much also doesnt mean that her comments and critiques in your sketchbook arent right and is good advice, for example, you came to my sketchbook and said that you thought there was too much chatting going on? not being mean or anything, but if your too blunt all the time, it might not be received very well by other members of the forum

Aaaanyways, sorry to hijack there,
Good stuff in your updates Naomi, nice to see you loosen up in sketches like this http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=161329&stc=1&d=1183151875- really good =]
I also like your last character, except i think her waist is a bit skinny in proportion to the rest of her? unless your going stylised
Also really like the colours in your leaves, all though i already told you that in person hehe

Hi:}
I like your ink (i guess it's ink?) sketches.....<3 and i loved those hand studies http://www.cheeb.co.uk/gallery/sb/sb05.jpg ah and i have to say you know how to draw figures.

I'm shocked I haven't been to your sb yet! I'm a friend on Myspace and saw your website through that, but I'm just now checking this thread. You've improved sooooooooooo much since you started the thread. :) You have some great costume designs (love the inks from the post on the 29th). I'd love to see you draw more hands and feet... most of the one's I've seen here (aside from the studies) are either just hints of appendages or hidden by something else (hair, sleeves, etc)

keep going!! :D

Good stuff naomi. Pay super close attention to the edges of shapes and be discepline in copying them or creating them. Because that is what makes the objects look what it is, valume and texture is the stuff in the middle, i think x x x

Shinryu: Thanks! I understand what you mean, but not how to fix that. Still got a lot to learn (me) and need to get out of the nasty habit of focusing on detail too early :S
And yush, the ted lectures rule~ I'm a nerd for that sorta thing :) Yay, knowledge!

iceman478: 1.) I'm a girl; 2.) I think you've completely missed the point, mate. Instead of lashing out at people who offer honest crit and advice, try taking it in, practice, and improve yourself artistically and as a person.
I know for a fact that you won't bother coming back in here to read my response, but at least now we've both had our say.

Fran: Cheers, Fran :) Very well said, too!
Yeah, I love that sketch~ About the waist - it was a really, really quick sketch (no more than 2 or 3 minutes) so anatomy wasn't on my mind at the time. Just wanted to get the idea and energy down on paper before it fizzled out.

PinkMonkee: Thank you ^_^ Ink is great! I feel more free working with it, 'cause it's less restrictive, imo. Once you've made a mark, it's there permanently and you can either fix it or leave it be. I like that, having to think on your toes kinda thing - keeps you sharp. :) Otherwise I'd be fiddling around with pointless detail forever!!

BohemianChaos: Than kyou!! Very good point, too - I tend to draw hands and feet separately as studies but never actually apply them to bodies. o.O And honestly didn't think of it until you mentioned that. Thanks! Will work on that...

Christian: Cheers! Yeah, silhouettes are really important in design so that they can be recognised as a whole. Thanks for dropping by~

-------------------------

K, haven't posted in ages, haven't drawn in what feels like ages, and can't really remember what I've done since, so here are some tidbits which happen to be lying about:

1.) Sketch from the time I discovered a cute lil cafe in town and had some time to kill. While I was drawing this, one of the waitresses scared the crap outta me when she suddenly said "Oo that's clever!" from over my shoulder >_<;;

Note: Just found out that my scanner isn't working for some reason, so I've taken photos of the rest. Apologies for the low quality (of art and the picture itself, haha)

2.) A quick study of my bf drawing in the Manchester Art Gallery cafe. Used a brush pen for this one. Also, this looks absolutely nothing like him...:nohope:

3&4.) Started drawing loosely with a pencil and came up with these.

5.) Marilyn Monroe-ish prep sketch for a TD entry

6.) An ape/monkey with an afro by Pete Amachree, a.k.a. SummerPudding ;)

7.) Did a quick experimental study of a girl from a book called "Human" <----AMAZING for reference on different cultures and types of people.

8.) Sepia doodle of a boy referenced from the book mentioned above.

9&10.) My tribute to Glen Angus, a.k.a. gangus, plus a WIP. RIP...

Would find the link to the post I made in that thread but it doesn't load well when logged in, grr.

11.) Most recent painting: a study of a very tempting apple. Shame the painting doesn't convey that ;P Still need lots of practice.

C&C's always welcome so fire away! I know I've kinda gone downhill lately, but hopefully uni will help give things a kick-start!

EDIT: Just realised that I put that apple study on the previous page, duuuuuuuh. Will post up some new stuff when I have something to re-size it on. Does Mac have something like Paint??? Or *something* to manipulate pics 'cause I don't have Photoshop yet :( Am having serious withdrawal symptoms, lol

Hello:)
That apple is pretty nice:) I especially like the cast shadow from its stem... or stalk... or whatever it's called. But I don't really like the shadow the apple casts on the ground. The light is coming from the upper right, so the shadow should be cast on the lower left. It should continue in the direction of the light.
Also, your ink drawings are so great! The lines are so fluid and expressive!
Have fun now:) And post stuff:)

Hey Quicksilver, I really like your work, esp the bonobos on page8. Really clear and clean images, despite the delicacy and sensitivity of the media you did it with. V good.

I was just curious, you said you got into Bournemouth to do a BE(Hons). . . is that a typo? I have only heard of BA(Hons) before? Whatizzit?

Quicksilver

Chee: Hahaha, still learning how to, mate! Been doing the ol' cube drawings lately, as you can see (below), in attempt to get a grasp of perspective. One step at a time, eh?

m0uS3r: Thank you! :) Hahaha, yeah....not in that way! But I just tend to draw them more (probably cause I flick through Fashion mags and such), but yeah, really need to draw more guys....and kids, I hardly ever draw those either. Yeesh!
Cheers for stopping by, mate - will repay the favour after this post.

Windmaker: Chaaars. There was more than one light source on that apple so the shadows were a bit funky and honestly looked like that. o_O

FRAAAAANLEYSMITH: Np and gimme a chance!! Haha. I'm just chucking up some random doodles atm - got my assessment tomorrow so I'll ask for permission to put my stuff up here, so if they throw me a yes then I'll update again tomorrow or something, okay? :P Though I don't like some of the stuff I churned out :S

Bones Weep Tedium: Thank you~! ^_^ Ah yes, I'm doing a BA, not BE! Didn't notice that :$ Will edit that post later....cheers for pointing that out, hehe.

-----------------------------------

Kk, I handed in all my work for the first unit in uni yesterday, so I have some time between now to....Monday? So besides writing an essay or two, I actually have time to draw my own stuff for a bit, yay~

Oo oo, also, I HAVE A NEW WACOM TABLET! WHEEEEEEEEE <3 Gotsa A5 Intuos, and it's yummy. :3 Am also now equipped with CS3, so I'm a very, very happy bunny indeed~ So now I have no excuses and must take advantage of these things to work on my art. :D

I'm currently being mentored on value/form by Windmaker and (more recently) Kian, so hopefully this'll push me to draw more than outlines ^_^;

Here's a value study I did for Windmaker:
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=237949&stc=1&d=1194891047
You can check out our thread here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=108822)

And the thread run by Kian can be found here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110528). This is originally for Danny, but Jon invited me to join in, so I might just practice in the shadows so not to raid his thread.

Righto, 'fraid I only have yet more doodles and unfinished bits'n bobs to show for now, but bear with me if ya can:

1, 2&3.) Cubes! As sketchling and Kian keep mentioning; cubes are the way to go to start learning about perspective, so here are my attempts. As you can see, the first page is a bit scatty, but I think by the third page I kinda got the hang of it. Please let me know where I've gone wrong so I can take note of it later :)

4.) Random brush pen doodle

**Testing out the tabby**
5.) Last night I cooked a bit too much AGAIN. Usually I end up cooking two portions by accident, but last night I purposely wanted that much so I wouldn't have to cook for tonight, but ended up cooking for about three....and could only fit so much into those handy lil food containers so I just ate whatever was leftover afterwards....then realised I didn't use as much cream as I thought I would so I ended up making a fruit salad to pour cream on top of and ate THAT. Uuuugggghhhhhh......completely self-inflicted, but whatev, better than leaving food to waste, right??

6.) *WIP* Referencing from an amazing book called "Human"

7.) Random doodle from earlier. God it's like sketching with a pencil with this thing! I like how the girl on the right came out the most. Yes yes, I know, need to draw more guys...

Cheers for dropping by my SB! Feel free to critique or comment on anything - they're always welcome here :)
